Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) is intended to supplant legacy (optical) bar code scanning technology found in many logistic and retail applications. RFID is distinguished by inexpensive, low power and compact form factor tags, whose longevity and efficacy are predicated on using passive communication techniques and on-tag power harvesting. Such tags employ backscatter modulation, which does not require any active RF components. As a result, backscatter has become an attractive design choice for short-range communications in power constrained wireless sensor networking scenarios. The purpose of this work is two-fold. First, it aims to expose backscatter communication as an emerging topic to a communication systems-theoretic audience. Since backscatter modulation and on-tag power harvesting efficiency are coupled, it is necessary to re-examine notions of power and spectral efficiency from an energy-constraint perspective; this leads to novel coded modulation schemes for future RFID systems. Further, we investigate RFID MIMO systems where the channel fading encountered has different statistics than the classical Rayleigh fading model. A high-harmonic traveling-wave tube (HHTWT) is designed, developed, and tested in this paper. This device is configured as a multiplier–amplifier with Q-band input signals and its third harmonic, i.e., D-band output power. The tested result demonstrates that 280 mW at 133.5 GHz is obtained as a result of 200 mW at 44.5-GHz input signal. The simulation and experiment validate that the high-harmonic radiation can be generated and amplified in the HHTWT. The approach described in this paper could find application in exploring high power, wideband tunable terahertz source. This paper is expanded from a conference paper on IVEC 2017. In this paper, a new modulation strategy based on the carrier-based switching strategy for the non-square direct matrix converters (MC) is proposed to control the active power of distributed generation (DG) units. In this strategy, the active power of DGs is controlled by the central input current control of the non-square direct MC independent from the voltage and frequency. Conventionally, each DG has a converter, and for supplying a load with N number of DGs, N number of converters are needed and each converter has its own modulation switching and control strategy to control the power output of each DG. Needless to say, in a microgrid with N number of DGs, the control strategy of each converter has more complex structure than that of a microgrid with one converter, and surely the former strategy entails more volume and price. Using the proposed converter in this paper, it is possible to supply a load with N number of DGs through one converter. Also, the power outputs of all DGs are controlled by a central control strategy. The proposed central control strategy is described and simulated for a typical microgrid. Experimental and simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed converter and the proposed strategy. The increasing use of backscatter radio for pervasive Internet-of-Things systems as a low-power and low-cost communication scheme will result in dense deployments of tags that need to operate under bandwidth (BW) constraints. Typical backscatter tags and computational radio frequency (RF) identification systems are unnecessarily limited to modulating data with “ON–OFF” switching front-ends, which leads to extensive spectrum occupancy, due to the rectangular pulses. This paper sets the foundations to overcome these limitations and proposes designs of RF front-ends that are capable of varying the tag reflection coefficient in a continuous way over time. Arbitrary waveforms can be generated to perform pulse shaping on the backscattered signals, which require significantly reduced BW. The principles presented in this paper will enable sophisticated tags to perform complex modulation schemes under BW constraints, while maintaining a very low RF front-end complexity, using a single nonlinear component such as a p-i-n diode or field-effect transistor. Migrating the idea of pulse shaping from complex power-demanding active radios to such minimal RF front-ends will complete backscatter radio as a communication scheme for simple RF tags and sensors in large-scale deployments. In a common dc-link dual-fed open-end winding permanent magnet synchronous motor (OEW-PMSM) topology, it is well known how the additional flow of a zero-sequence current (ZSC) is permitted. The low zero-sequence impedance characteristic of high-speed machines leads to high-intensity and high-frequency ripple of the ZSC. Therefore, there is a necessity to eliminate the zero-sequence-voltage (ZSV) produced by the two voltage source converters that feed the machine. Furthermore, the non-sinusoidal back electromagnetic force (back EMF) causes the circulation of a third harmonic ZSC. An OEW-PMSM high-speed starter-generator fed by a dual-inverter with a single dc-link is considered. Part I of this paper proposes a modulation for the considered topology able to eliminate instantaneously the ZSV produced. In this paper, a detailed analysis of the deadtime (DT) effect on the ZSV has been carried out and a novel hysteresis control for the ZSC using the DT as a control action is presented. This paper explores the dynamic properties of oscillating and propagating patterns in concentration of the information molecule and proposes a new modulation scheme for molecular communication. In the proposed modulation scheme, information molecules transmitted from a sender bio-nanomachine propagate in the environment, chemically react with the molecules in the environment, change their concentration, and form an oscillating and propagating pattern in the environment. A sender bio-nanomachine modulates information onto the dynamic properties of the pattern, such as the amount of change in concentration of the information molecule and the time duration of one cycle of a periodic pattern in concentration of the information molecule. Receiver bio-nanomachines receive the oscillating and propagating pattern that the sender bio-nanomachine generates and detect its dynamic properties to demodulate information. This paper implements the proposed modulation scheme using Ca2+ oscillation and propagation, a communication mechanism found in biological cells. It also demonstrates that the proposed modulation scheme allows information to be simultaneously modulated onto multiple dynamic properties of an oscillating and propagating pattern that a sender bio-nanomachine generates. The main contributions of this paper are to open a new research area of modulation schemes in molecular communication and to illustrate the possibility that biological cells use such modulation schemes for cell-to-cell communication. This paper analyzes the unsymmetrical operation of the dc/dc MMC caused by parametric uncertainty. The unsymmetrical operation is referred to as the condition in which parameters involved in ac power generation are not equal in the phase-legs of the converter. Because existing models in the literature cannot exhibit the unsymmetrical operation of the dc/dc MMC, new detailed and simplified steady-state models are developed in this paper. In the developed models, the connection between the operation of different phase-legs shows itself when the dc-link impedance is considered. Using the developed models, the parameters that can force the converter to operate in unsymmetrical conditions are identified, and the maximum variation that the converter can tolerate is found. It is shown that even a small parameter variation leads to the leakage of the ac circulating current into the dc-link, which is not acceptable. By conducting various case studies, the impacts of the dc-link length, the transmitted power, and the conversion ratio on the unsymmetrical operation of the dc/dc MMC are characterized. The results showed that the converter would be more sensitive to the parameter variation as these parameters increase. This paper proposes new two-dimensional magnetic recording (TDMR) systems using polar channel coding as practical error correction coding. It is known that the time and space complexities of the encoding/decoding algorithms based on polar channel coding are \mathcal O(N \log N) , where $N$ is the codeword (block) length. If we compare the error-correction performance of a polar code with that of a low-density parity-check (LDPC) code in the same rate, it is known that the polar code has a longer length and its decoder still has a lower implementation complexity than the LDPC decoder. Therefore, relatively low-complexity coding schemes are preferable for any TDMR systems under high rates and relatively long codeword lengths. In this paper, the proposed TDMR system serially concatenates a two-dimensional (2-D) modulation code with one-dimensional (1-D) polar codes in each down-track direction. These element polar codes are designed on the fundamentals of the channel polarization theory, which are applied for channels with memory. Actually, it evaluates the performance of the signal processing scheme with concatenated coding and generalized partial response equalization for the proposed TDMR system using bit-patterned media by computer simulations. As a result, it shows that the block error rate performance of the proposed TDMR system with the 2-D modulation and polar channel coding schemes is superior to that of the 1-D system with the conventional 1-D high rate modulation and LDPC coding schemes. Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are widely used as error correction codes in new generation digital TV standards, such as the second generation of terrestrial digital video broadcasting standard (DVB-T2), Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0, etc. The nonlinear belief propagation (BP) algorithm has excellent decoding performance for LDPC codes, but is often simplified in hardware implementations by linear min-sum (MS) algorithm due to its high complexity. This simplification also leads to over-estimation problems, which can be corrected by adding factors in conventional algorithms (e.g., normalized min-sum (NMS), offset min-sum (OMS), and variable scaling normalized min-sum (VMS) algorithms). However, the correction factors of these modified MS algorithms cannot adapt to different channels and modulations, and the performance needs further improvement. In this paper, the concepts of over-estimation value (OEV) and over-estimation rate (OER) are introduced to describe the over-estimation problem of the MS algorithm. Then, under the guidance of OEV and OER, a polygonal line min-sum (PMS) algorithm with correction factors adapted to different channels and modulations is proposed according to LLR distribution. Following the properties of OEV and OER, PMS algorithm is further simplified into Simplified PMS (SPMS) algorithm. LDPC codes from ATSC 3.0 are adopted in this paper to evaluate SPMS algorithm in comparison with the conventional algorithms. Extensive simulation results show that the SPMS algorithm for ATSC 3.0 LDPC decoder has at most 1.61dB, 0.24dB and 0.36dB gain over NMS, OMS and VMS algorithms respectively when frame error rate (FER) is at 10−4 level over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with QPSK modulation. More importantly, the simulation results show that the SPMS algorithm can achieve much better performance than these modified MS algorithms over AWGN and Rayleigh channel with higher-order modulations or under limited maximum iteration number. This paper presents an evolution of control systems of Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs) focusing on the internal voltages and currents dynamics. MMCs have passive components inside the converter that create extra dynamics compared to conventional VSCs. Some control schemes that do not consider these internal dynamics may still stabilize the system asymptotically thanks to the linearisation in the modulation step. However these control schemes are less robust because they are prone to poor damped oscillations on the dc side of the converter. The MMC circuit and energy relationships are presented in this paper. Along with a gradual development of the energy based control, the important roles of each internal dynamics are clearly demonstrated. This paper focuses on the shingled magnetic recording (SMR) as the recording system for further high-density hard disk drives. Previously, we applied a log-likelihood ratio (LLR) modulator to the low-density parity check coding and iterative decoding system in SMR to improve the decoding performance. In this paper, we propose a new LLR modulator using neural network. Furthermore, we clarify that the proposed LLR modulator using neural network realizes effective iterative decoding in a read/write channel with pattern-dependent medium noise. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The goal of the paper is to develop a hybrid modulation technique to combine space vector modulation (SVM) scheme and synchronous optimal pulsewidth modulation (SOPWM) technique for current source inverter (CSI). SVM provides better dynamic performance, but is unable to produce less total harmonic distortion (THD) on inverter current at low device switching frequency ($< $ 1 kHz). SOPWM provides less THD even at low device switching frequency, however it needs a conversion technique to operate CSI and it needs an additional control technique to improve dynamic performance. Hence to overcome these limitations, this paper develops a single modulation technique called optimal SVM technique that can achieve less THD as well as better dynamic performance. To develop optimal SVM technique, three methods have been proposed in this paper. These three methods do not require an additional conversion technique to operate CSI and they provide less THD even under low device switching frequency of 450 Hz. This paper introduces circular color shift keying (CSK) constellations in a visible light communications (VLC) system using a camera-based receiver with applications to vehicular communications, where vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications are required to improve the safety of vehicles in high traffic density. The circular CSK constellations are shown to outperform the geometric and IEEE 802.15.7 constellations in terms of bit-error probability. Afterward, the noise at the receiver is investigated and transferred from the spatial domain to an angular noise in the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) color domain, where it is shown to behave similarly to a Gaussian distribution. Based on this noise model, a closed-form expression of the bit-error rate (BER) of circular CSK constellations is derived and shown to be accurate for BER ranges corresponding to VLC applications of practical interest. Diversity techniques are also investigated, and interesting differences are noted during the analysis compared to traditional radio frequency (RF) communication scenarios. Finally, the design of a link adaptation approach maximizing the number of bits per transmitted symbol, while meeting a target BER, is proposed. This paper presents a seven-port modulator capable of switching the polarization state of the transmitting signal. Similar to the six-port modulator, the proposed device modulates the carrier signal through the reflection coefficients generated by four variable loads. The additional seventh port allows feeding two antennas or a dual-port antenna. The loads control both the complex envelope and the polarization of the transmitted carrier signal. The mathematical model of the device, developed in this paper, is applied to analyze its performance and different modes of operation. For validation, a prototype is manufactured for a center frequency of 1575.42 MHz. It is used to generate M-quadratic-amplitude modulation at different polarizations. Molecular communication via diffusion (MCvD) is a molecular communication method that utilizes the free diffusion of carrier molecules to transfer information at the nanoscale. Due to the random propagation of carrier molecules, intersymbol interference (ISI) is a major issue in an MCvD system. Alongside ISI, interlink interference (ILI) is also an issue that increases the total interference for the MCvD-based multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) approaches. Inspired by the antenna index modulation (IM) concept in traditional communication systems, this paper introduces novel IM-based transmission schemes for MCvD systems. In this paper, molecular space shift keying (MSSK) is proposed as a novel modulation for molecular MIMO systems, and it is found that this method combats ISI and ILI considerably better than the existing MIMO approaches. For nanomachines that have access to two different molecules, the direct extension of MSSK, quadrature MSSK (QMSSK) is also proposed. QMSSK is found to combat ISI considerably well while not performing well against ILI-caused errors. In order to combat ILI more effectively, another dual-molecule-based novel modulation scheme called the molecular spatial modulation (MSM) is proposed. This paper presents an analysis of efficiency for passive magnetic gear resulting from the selection of materials and structures in the magnetic circuit. A particular attention is paid to the structure of modulator, which forms the crucial element of the system, and which can be designed in a variety of ways. In this paper, the considered alternatives include a modulator design manufactured from soft magnetic composite material and from circumferentially and axially stacked lamination. Based on the experimentally determined efficiency versus load curves, the study demonstrates that the soft magnetic modulator has similar performance as for the case of a circumferentially and axially stacked lamination. In this paper, we consider a simple coding scheme for spatial modulation, where the same set of active transmit antennas is repeatedly used over consecutive multiple transmissions. Based on a Gaussian approximation, an approximate maximum likelihood (ML) detection problem is formulated to detect the indices of active transmit antennas. We show that the solution to the approximate ML detection problem can achieve a full coding gain. Furthermore, we develop a low-complexity iterative algorithm to solve the problem with low complexity based on a well-known machine learning approach, i.e., variational inference. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can have a near ML performance. A salient feature of the proposed algorithm is that its complexity is independent of the number of active transmit antennas, whereas an exhaustive search for the ML problem requires a complexity that grows exponentially with the number of active transmit antennas. Compliant actuators are typically designed to possess a tunable positive stiffness characteristic in order to generate restoring force upon displacement. These actuators either require two independent motor units or closed-loop control to change both their equilibrium position and output stiffness. The introduction of negative stiffness, in combination with tunable positive stiffness, may reduce the complexity and extend the capability of these actuators in unexpected ways. In this paper, we present a compliant actuator that employs a passive negative stiffness mechanism in conjunction with an effectively tunable positive stiffness mechanism. We show that such actuator enables open-loop stiffness modulation and equilibrium position control using a single motor unit, as opposed to more conventional variable stiffness and series elastic actuators. The paper presents the theoretical foundation of positive-negative stiffness actuators and demonstrates low-power stiffness modulation and equilibrium position control achievable with a prototype positive-negative stiffness actuator. The minimum specific ON-resistance $\text{R}_{ \mathrm{\scriptscriptstyle ON},\textsf {sp}}$ of the semisuperjunction (semi-SJ) device is realized in this paper. Based on the similar SJ optimization method in our previous works, the minimum $\text{R}_{ \mathrm{\scriptscriptstyle ON},\textsf {sp}}$ of the semi-SJ is searched by optimizing both the semi-SJ and the N-buffer regions. The proposed design formulas give the optimized doping concentration $\text{N}_{\textsf {SJ}}$ of the semi-SJ region, doping concentration $\text{N}_{\textsf {B}}$ , and length $\text{L}_{\textsf {B}}$ of the N-buffer region, respectively. As examples, 1000- and 1500-V semi-SJ devices are designed with the formulas. The calculated results are in a good agreement with the simulations. The comparisons between the simulations and the existing experiments demonstrate that the optimization in this paper realizes lower $\text{R}_{ \mathrm{\scriptscriptstyle ON},\textsf {sp}}$ under the same breakdown voltage $\text{V}_{\textsf {B}}$ even with a shorter SJ length. In this paper, we introduce spatial modulation (SM) in the layered division multiplexing (LDM) system for digital TV scenarios. To analyze the achievable spectral efficiency (SE) performance of the proposed SM-LDM system, we calculate its mutual information (MI) through the Monte Carlo method. Considering both Gaussian and finite alphabet inputs, we derive the MI’s computational-efficient lower bounds as well as their asymptotic values. This article investigates energy storage requirements in the submodules of a class of converters known as hybrid cascaded modular multilvel converters (HC-MMCs). The complexities arising from the usage of different submodule types and their non-conventional arrangement necessitate detailed analysis of submodule capacitor voltage ripples, which are needed for development of guidelines for sizing submodule capacitors. This paper characterizes electric charge variations in the submodule capacitors to derive expressions for capacitor voltage ripples, and to determine the energy storage requirements of the converter. This paper presents a dual active bridge (DAB) converter with reactive power control capability (Q-capability) for a battery energy storage system (BESS) or an electric vehicle (EV) to deliver vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) services. The DAB topology is preferable for EV charging systems due to its galvanic isolation and bidirectional power flow capabilities. However, this topology increases reactive current peak and loses zero voltage switching (ZVS) operation at light loads if it is not controlled with improved modulation strategies and proper Q control. This paper proposes a mixed modulation method and a reactive power optimization (RPO) algorithm based on power system load flow concepts. Due to the complexities associated with the analytical solution using time domain analysis, this paper develops detailed universal expressions of a DAB converter using the harmonic analysis method. Analytical identification of ZVS boundaries and DSP implementation of the RPO algorithm become easier with these universal expressions. Multiple modes analysis for different operational states is no longer required. Simulation results have been shown for different modulation strategies of the DAB converters. The theoretical analysis of modulation strategies, RPO algorithm and ZVS operation are validated by experimental results on a DAB prototype. Signed quadrature spatial modulation (SQSM) was recently introduced to enhance the throughput of spatial modulation (SM) in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. This strategy involves independently transmitting the real and imaginary components of a symbol and its inverse from four independent antennas. In this paper, an extended SQSM (ESQSM) system is proposed. It combines $K$ SQSM constellations and transmits them from the same transmit-antenna set with the aim of realizing a $K$ -fold improvement in the spectral efficiency (SE). The proposed ESQSM employs the average power of the $K$ SQSM constellations as an additional dimension for transmission. Performance of the proposed ESQSM surpasses that of other state-of-art SM systems such as the QSM, DSM, IQSM SQSM, and EQSM by 13 dB, 11 dB, 10.55 dB, 10 dB, and 6.8 dB, respectively. In this paper, we also propose an efficient ESQSM with a multi-user (ESQSM-MU) system inspired by the ESQSM ability in increasing the SE. The proposed ESQSM-MU system offers a significant bit error rate (BER) improvement and a higher capacity (i.e., $5K$ -users) compared to the current non orthogonal multiple access-SM (NOMA-SM) and SM-assisted multi-antenna NOMA (SM-AMA-NOMA) systems. Moreover, an efficient low-complexity detector is introduced for the ESQSM signal detection, promising a 91.2% reduction in the computational complexity of ESQSM and ESQSM-MU systems relative to the maximum likelihood (ML) with a trivial loss in performance. The open-end winding permanent magnet synchronous motor (OW-PMSM) with common DC bus configuration provides a path for zero-sequence current (ZSC). Apart from the zero-sequence voltage (ZSV) generated by inverters modulation, ZSC also comes from the third harmonic back-EMF. However, the third harmonic back-EMF contains the position information of the rotor, which can be extracted by an appropriate strategy to achieve position sensorless drive. In order to achieve sensorless drive and ZSC suppression simultaneously, this paper proposes a novel general-integral extended state observer (GI-ESO) based method. The third harmonic back-EMF of the OW-PMSM is estimated and calculated in three-phase stationary coordinate system by GI-ESO. And then, a single-phase phase lock loop observer (SPLL) is exploited to extract the position and speed information of the rotor. Meanwhile, the estimated third harmonic back-EMF is directly fed forward to SPWM as the ZSV reference, then the output voltages of the inverters contains the ZSV that can exactly counteract the third harmonic back-EMF, so as to realize the suppression of ZSC. Compared with the method of combining the fundamental back-EMF detection and proportional resonance (PR) regulator, this method can realize sensorless drive and ZSC suppression at the same time with only one scheme. Benefiting from the use of GI-ESO, the observer bandwidth can be relatively low, which helps suppress noise and extend the speed range of sensorless operation. This paper analyzes the performance of the recently proposed quadrature spatial modulation (QSM) multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) system over Nakagami- $m$ fading channel. In the analysis, the general distribution of the Nakagami- m$ channel phase is considered. In the literature, performance analysis of spatial modulation (SM) over Nakagami- m$ channel with uniform phase is conducted. However, apart from the very special case of , where Nakagami- $m$ fading corresponds to Rayleigh fading, the phase of the Nakagami- $m$ distribution is not uniformly distributed. It is shown in this paper that the phase of the channel has major impact on the performance of spatial multiplexing MIMO systems such as SM and QSM systems. A general upper bound expression for the average bit error ratio (ABER) performance of QSM is derived, and the impact of different channel parameters is studied. Broadcasting and broadband network is moving towards integration and LTE-based 5G terrestrial broadcast is now researched in Release 16 in Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standardization meetings. However, the work scope of LTE-based 5G terrestrial broadcast focuses on specifying new numerologies and some minor improvement on cell acquisition subframe, which is insufficient. In this paper, limitations in coding and modulation schemes of LTE-based 5G terrestrial broadcast system, e.g., Turbo codes and Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM), are detailedly analyzed. To further enhance the spectrum efficiency of LTE-based 5G terrestrial broadcast system, LDPC (Low Density Parity Check) codes from 5G new radio (NR) standard and newly designed non-uniform constellations (NUCs) are adopted in this paper to replace Turbo codes and QAM respectively. Extensive simulations and complexity analysis show that the proposed LDPC coding and NUC modulation scheme, either standalone or combined, can provide significant performance gain over Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and Tapped Delayline (TDL) channels, without additional complexity. To summarize, this paper investigates the weakness of the coding and modulation schemes in current systems and provides potential alternatives for the enhanced future broadcast in 3GPP standard. Inhomogeneous and random scattering in a static-scattering medium diffuses an incident light field into a complex speckle pattern. This phenomenon leads to uncontrolled and unpredictable changes in the spectrum as incident polychromatic light is scattered by the static-scattering medium. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a novel technique for shaping the randomly scattered spectrum into a controlled mode. The proposed technique is demonstrated experimentally by examples of bandpass spectrum, stairs, right triangle, and Gaussian spectra. A theoretical model for simulating polychromatic light field passing through a scattering medium is also developed. Theoretical and experimental results are consistent. The staircase modulation strategy is the best choice for asymmetric cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (ACMI) because it makes the output voltage to present a high number of levels and makes one of the ACMI modules to operate at low frequency. However, the staircase modulation is usually employed without giving its deserved attention. This paper presents a clear understanding of the staircase modulation strategy and its applications in both isolated and grid-connected ACMI.  The main novelty of this paper is the obtaining of the switching function for each module. The principle of operation is carefully described, also indicating how to command the ACMI transistors. The output voltage of the two superior modules is evaluated for different values of iterations. Special attention is given to the power distribution among the ACMI modules when the staircase modulation is applied. It is demonstrated on how the power is processed in each module considering an ACMI with three modules. The analysis is presented showing the staircase modulation within a closed-loop control strategy for isolated and grid-connected modes of operation, showing that the content of this paper is valid for both modes. High-speed electrical drives normally require converters capable of high-frequency operation. For this reason, converters based on SiC mosfets have been spreading in this field. Nevertheless, the problems caused by the high dv/dt imposed by SiC mosfets, like the premature failure of the motor winding insulation and the electromagnetic interference generation, are drawing more and more attention of the experts of this sector. In fact, these issues can deeply affect the system reliability and, hence, can represent a limiting factor for all those applications where the continuity of operation is the highest priority. To avoid the use of SiC mosfets in the most sensitive applications, this paper presents a solution, which consists of a Si-insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT)-based inverter fed by a Si-IGBT-based dc/dc converter performing a suitable dc voltage regulation. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to prove that a stable operation of a high-speed drive can be guaranteed through the proposed converter configuration. The dual-active bridge (DAB) topology is commonly preferred in bidirectional applications due to several attractive features, including auto-adjust of power flow, galvanic insulation, wide voltage gain, and zero voltage switching (ZVS) capability over some power ranges. However, the efficiency of the converter drops at light loads because the ZVS range is directly dependent on the circulating current. Assuming that the processed power is variable, the DAB converter's design must find a compromise between extending ZVS ranges and reducing the reactive power processing to ensure higher efficiency. Aiming this compromise, many papers propose hybrid approaches in which the modulation strategy is selected according to the processed power. However, this is not a simple solution because it demands multivariable control and offline optimizations. This paper proposes a modulation strategy to ensure ZVS and reduce the circulating current for the DAB converters. While the usual phase-shift modulation provides ZVS operation in a range of 40% to 100% of rated power, the proposed asymmetrical pulse-width modulation can obtain ZVS operation in a range of 2% to 100% of rated power. In this paper, we propose a new adaptive modulation based on the wavelet packet transform, which targets a good resistance against frequency selective channels while avoiding a large PAPR. Classical multi-carrier modulation schemes divide the channel bandwidth into narrowband sub-channels to improve its robustness against frequency selective fading. However, they suffer from the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) problem, which occurs due to a random constructive addition of sub-carriers. By contrast, single carrier modulation schemes, where each transmitted symbol fully occupies the bandwidth, are more sensitive to frequency selective environments and less affected by the PAPR problem. In this paper, we show how the bandwidth division can be reconfigurable and adapted to the channel properties, and we provide several examples to prove that the proposed adaptive modulation represents an alternative modulation which is adjustable between two extreme cases: single carrier modulation and classical multi-carrier modulation. The visible light communication (VLC) can provide data transmission via the illumination light emitting diodes (LED). This paper introduces a new model to analyze the bit error rate (BER) of binary phase modulation in VLC for an arbitrary modulation depth and data duty cycle while taking into account both the Gaussian and signal-dependent shot noise. The impact of the driver design on the BER and its impact on ripple have not been considered in detail before. We compare two different LED driver schemes, namely directly adapting the driver control loop and binary shunting. We address data rate, BER, and power efficiency, for which we propose to use the extra energy per symbol above unmodulated light. We further introduce an analysis of the effect that (truncated) ripple interference has in the (matched or other) filter of the receiver. Ripple causes a harmful interference in VLC, and thus a BER expression is derived to include its effect. Two approximations are proposed to model the ripple interference, and their accuracies are compared by simulations. Although cogging torque in magnetic gears (MGs) has been studied, the additional degree of freedom inherent to MGs makes it unclear exactly what is defined as the cogging torque of a MG. Although MGs generally have relatively smooth torque transfer characteristics, this paper reveals that when the gear is used in an up-speed configuration, cogging effects may be amplified under startup conditions. This paper distinguishes between two kinds of cogging torque in MGs, termed the synchronous cogging torque and the true cogging torque. Calculation of the true cogging torque is more difficult than the synchronous cogging torque, but an approximation to the true cogging torque can be obtained using the synchronous cogging torque. This paper focuses on the problem of separately modulating and jointly estimating two independent continuous-valued parameters sent over a Gaussian multiple-access channel (MAC) under the mean square error (MSE) criterion without bandwidth constraints. To this end, we first improve an existing lower bound on the MSE that is obtained using the parameter modulation-estimation techniques for the single-user additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. As for the main contribution of this paper, this improved modulation-estimation analysis is generalized to the model of the two-user Gaussian MAC. We present outer bounds to the achievable region in the plane of the MSE’s of the two user parameters, which provides a trade-off between the MSE’s, where we used zero-rate lower bounds on the error probability of Gaussian channels by Shannon and Polyanskiy et al. Numerical results showed that, the multi-user adaptation of the zero-rate lower bound by Polyanskiy et al. provides a tighter overall lower bound on the MSE pairs than the classical Shannon bound. In addition, we introduced upper bounds on the MSE exponents, namely, the exponential decay rates of these MSE’s in the asymptotic regime of long blocks that could make use of any bound on the error exponent of a single-user AWGN channel. The obtained results are numerically evaluated for three different bounds on the reliability function of the Gaussian channel. It is shown that the adaptation of the reliability function by Ashikhmin et al. to the MAC provides a significantly tighter characterization than Shannon’s sphere-packing bound and the divergence bound. There have been a lot of ambiguities related to physics of quasi-saturation (QS) in laterally diffused MOS (LDMOS) devices in the published literature. For example, models that explain QS in input characteristics do not explain the same in output characteristics and vice versa. In addition to this, none of the earlier models explain early onset of QS at higher temperatures nor the models were validated using counter arguments. Attributed to this, a need for unified theory explaining physics of QS is justified in this paper. Furthermore, this paper for the first time, while addressing missing links between the observations reported in the past, develops a unified theory to explain physics of QS behavior. The theory presented here is independent of device architecture and covers all voltage-current–temperature trends. While considering velocity saturation and space charge modulation, we have discovered key role of high field mobility degradation of majority carriers and electric field screening, which is found to be the root cause of QS in LDMOS devices. The theory presented is further validated with numerous counter arguments. Finally, based on the new physical insight developed, we have proposed different approaches to mitigate QS effect. A detailed device design guideline to mitigate QS and its correlation with analog/RF performance, electo static discharge, hot-carrier reliability, self-heating, and safe operating area concern is presented in Part II of this paper. In this paper, we study the capacity and symbol error probability (SEP) of generalized spatial modulation (GSM) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) using measured channels that are obtained by channel sounding in an indoor office environment at 60GHz. Spatial modulation (SM) and GSM are emerging low-complexity MIMO schemes that have been extensively researched for low-GHz (below 6GHz) communications. Recently, they have been considered and shown to be promising also for (mmWave) communications. In the simplest possible case, they require only one RF chain both at the transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX), and thus, are especially attractive for mmWave communications, in which the number of RF chains needs to be as low as possible. Despite of some early works on the theoretical analysis of SM/GSM for mmWave communications, there have been no investigations using real-world channel data. We focus on the office line-of-sight (LOS) scenario and investigate three problems: 1) the performance of GSM using the extracted LOS component of measured channels; 2) the impact of non-LOS NLOS components on the performance of GSM; and 3) possible simple modulation and reception algorithms for GSM that rely only on the LOS component of the channel. The results being reported in this paper not only validate the main claims of previous studies based on ideal pure LOS channels, but also lead to novel findings. One major conclusion is that NLOS components are harmful to the SEP of GSM and should be avoided. As another important outcome, our results strongly motivate the use of precoding in GSM systems to simultaneously improve the channel capacity and reduce the physical size of MIMO arrays (thus eliminating one major issue of LOS GSM). This paper presents the effect of stray capacitances in bipolar (negative and/or positive) pulses generated by the two different topologies of the solid-state Marx modulators. According to the analysis, the stray capacitances influence the energy transfer from the Marx modulator capacitors to the load affecting the bipolar (negative and/or positive) pulse rise time. This paper deals with the structure design to reduce the influence of the stray capacitance and to improve the pulse rise time of these bipolar solid-state Marx modulators. A four-stage laboratory prototype of the two topologies has been assembled using 1200-V insulated gate bipolar transistors and diodes, operating with 1000-V dc input voltage and 1-kHz frequency, producing 4-kV bipolar pulses, with 5- \mu \texts pulse duration and 120-ns rise time, into a resistive load. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM), special form of multicarrier modulation, is the cornerstone of broad range of current standards. In addition, fifth-generation (5G) terrestrial wireless networks, advancing at accelerated speed, continue to use OFDM air interface. The first part of this paper endeavors to apply OFDM-like signaling for broadband satellite transmission in the forward direction, from gateway to terminals. Two layers of multicarrier operation are invoked. One allows multiple signals to share single on-board high-power amplifier. The other layer permits transmitted symbols from individual signals to modulate multiple narrowband OFDM subcarriers, followed by interpolating filters to suppress interference into adjacent signals and limit out-of-band emission to be compatible with satellite uplink. The second part of this paper proposes novel nonlinear compensation techniques, applied at the transmitter or receiver, and combination of both. Two performance assessments are provided: one exploiting information-theoretic framework using ideal channel coding; another based on total degradation using practical forward-error correction codes. We show that performance loss from nonlinear distortion can be significantly reduced when adopting the proposed correction methods. Furthermore, it is possible to use OFDM-like signaling over satellite, while being competitive, and in some cases surpassing, traditional systems with single-carrier modulation employing state-of-the-art enhanced receiver architecture. Finite-control-set model predictive current control (FCS-MPCC) always has large steady-state fluctuation and computational burden. In this paper, a novel FCS-MPCC without a modulator to drive permanent magnet synchronous hub motors (PMSHMs), which combines virtual vectors expansion scheme and duty cycle control was proposed. The lack of a modulator reduces the complexity of the control system. The virtual vectors are synthesized by using active vectors, which improve the accuracy of voltage selection, and further improve PMSHM's steady-state performance and reduce current harmonics. The duty cycle control uses a zero vector to obtain better steady-state performance. However, the duty cycle of the virtual vectors is limited by the synthesis method, and further analysis is needed. A new calculation process is proposed to reduce the amount of calculation. The deadbeat principle is used to get reference voltage which determines sectors. Then, the best voltage vector in the selected sector is determined by the predetermined cost function. The traditional MPCC and the duty cycle MPCC (DCMPCC) are used as a comparison item to compare with the proposed method to illustrate its effectiveness.
