Multi-Media applications are amongst the most demanding services, requiring high amounts of network capacity and computational resources for synchronous audio-visual streaming with high quality. Gaming streaming is one of the most demanding of these media applications. Recent technological advances in the 5G domain, precisely Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC), unlock media industries’ potential by offering high-quality media services through dynamic and efficient resource allocation with low latency. This work presents a multi-site gaming streaming use case implemented over an end-to-end 5G-enabled platform provided by the EU H2020 5G-PPP 5G EVE project. Furthermore, we present the executed use case experiment scenarios to validate the use case performance following a set of defined Quality of Experience(QoE)-related Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). In particular, this paper discusses the design workflow and orchestration of the multi-site gaming streaming use case across two 5G EVE sites (i.e., Spain and Greece), providing a detailed description of the network function applications and resources utilized for the use case. Subsequently, leveraging the 5G EVE monitoring platform, this paper elaborates on the executed experiment scenarios that provide the defined KPI metrics data. Finally, this paper presents, discusses, and analyzes the obtained KPI metrics data results and provides recommendations on future works for these kinds of use cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is our pleasure to present to the professional reader this "third" Special Issue on Power Modulators and Repetitive Pulsed Power of the IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation (previous issues were published in 2007 and 2009), and the fifth such Special Issue published by an IEEE Transactions (1991-IEEE TED; 2005-IEEE TPS). Most of the papers that appear in this issue are based on contributions to the 2010 International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference, which was held in Atlanta, GA, from May 23rd to 27th, 2011. The aim of this paper is to investigate whether it is possible to accurately map postfire vegetation recovery on the Mediterranean island of Thasos by employing Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) Hyperion imagery and object-based classification. Specific objectives include the following: 1) locating and mapping areas of forest regeneration and other vegetation recovery and distinguishing among them; 2) distinguishing between Pinus brutia regeneration and Pinus nigra regeneration within the area of forest regeneration; and 3) examining whether it is possible to distinguish between areas of forest regeneration (Pinus brutia, Pinus nigra) and mature forest. The data used in this study consist of satellite images, field-spectroradiometry measurements, and field observations of the homogenous revegetated areas. The methodology comprised four consecutive steps. The first step involved preprocessing of the Hyperion image and field data. Subsequently, an object-oriented model was developed, which involved three steps, namely, image segmentation, object training, and object classification. The process resulted in the separation of five classes ("brutia mature," "nigra mature," "brutia regeneration," "nigra regeneration," and "other vegetation"). The accuracy assessment revealed very promising results (approximately 75.81% overall accuracy, with a Kappa Index of Agreement of 0.689). Some classification confusion involving the classes of Pinus brutia regeneration and Pinus nigra regeneration was recorded. This could be attributed to the absence of large homogenous areas of regenerated pine trees. The main conclusion drawn in this paper was that object-based classification can be used to accurately map postfire vegetation recovery using EO-1 Hyperion imagery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Information about the 13th Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) biennial conference on Electromagnetic Field Computation (CEFC) held in Athens, Greece from May 11-15, 2008 is presented. Highlights include the discussions concerning wave propagation, modeling of materials as well as bioelectric field computation. Accordingly, 480 papers for potential acceptance in the IEEE journal have been submitted and that each paper has been assigned to two reviewers for evaluation.

The aim of this paper is to add a new principle in power system operation: the economic use of equipment. Economic use of equipment guides system operation, so that the cost of equipment wear is considered during the minimization of overall system running cost. To achieve this, a mathematical description of the connection between wear and use of equipment is needed. In this work, a methodology of expressing wear of cables as a function of their operating point is presented. A cost is attached to the wear of each cable system, which is augmented to the overall system running cost. The interconnected network of the Ionian Islands in Greece is used as a study case, which demonstrates the impact of the wear cost of cables during economic dispatch. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract-This paper investigates the electric and magnetic fields values in the area of an outdoor electric power substation 2 x 50 MVA, 150/20 kV, in Xanthi, Greece. Results of previous relevant measurements and calculations, as well as the reference levels in force for safe general public and occupational exposure, are presented first. Basic data for the examined substation along with a brief description of the field measurement instruments used follow. The main results of the field measurements in the area of the aforementioned substation are presented in relevant tables and diagrams. The Greek School Network (GSN) is a closed nationwide educational network that offers advanced telematic and networking services to all primary/secondary education schools and administration offices in Greece. The primary objective of GSN is the provisioning of a network infrastructure for the inter- connection of school PC laboratories so that modern educational methods and pedagogical models can be applied to the school community. GSN has scaled in size, has reached maturity, and is currently delivering a wide range of network and telematic services to its users. The emerging power of open-source software provides a sound technological basis for building cutting-edge services, capable of meeting internal administrative and monitoring needs, and modern pedagogical requirements for tools and services. The current paper presents an overview of GSN and an evaluation of its services based on the opinions of its users, and on service utilization and traffic measurement statistics. The paper reaches the conclusion that open-source solutions provide a sound technological platform that can cover, to a great extent, the needs for advanced educational services of the school community. Information about the 4th Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers/The International Federation for Information Processing (IEEE/IFIP) International Week on Management of Networks and Services (Manweek 2008), held from September 22-26 in Samos island, Greece, is presented. The event included technical sessions and panels of six workshops and conferences in the area of management of networks and services. The keynote speakers' discussions were centered on the future of Internet.

This paper introduces a novel methodology for the classification of ancient Greek inscriptions according to the writer who carved them. Inscription writer identification is crucial for dating the written content, which in turn is of fundamental importance in the sciences of history and archaeology. To achieve this, we first compute an ideal or "platonic" prototype for the letters of each inscription separately. Next, statistical criteria are introduced to reject the hypothesis that two inscriptions are carved by the same writer. In this way, we can determine the number of distinct writers who carved a given ensemble of inscriptions. Next, maximum likelihood considerations are employed to attribute all inscriptions in the collection to the respective writers. The method has been applied to 24 Ancient Athenian inscriptions and attributed these inscriptions to six different identified hands in full accordance with expert epigraphists' opinions. In this paper, a color image segmentation method and a pattern analysis are presented, in connection with the extraordinary 1650 B.C. wall paintings found in the Greek island of Thera. These wall paintings are usually reconstructed from thousands of fragments widely scattered in the excavated site. The fragments' depiction manifests inhomogeneous color decay, cracks, added extraneous material, etc. The proposed color image segmentation method takes into account the decay problems and offers a very good approximation of the initial fragment depiction as the artist drew it in the late Bronze Age. The algorithm performs essentially better than other standard segmentation schemes as extensive qualitative tests indicate. Moreover, it offers clear-cut color regions and region borders for each fragment depiction. The whole approach is based on classifying the pixels into a number of regions where each region is described by a normal distribution, followed by fragment-decay reduction and edge refining. Extensive pattern analysis to the obtained region borders leads to the conclusion that 3650 years ago, the artist most probably used advanced geometrical methods in order to construct handcrafted "French curves" (stencils or templates) and use them to draw certain figures. On the basis of the aforementioned results, specific pattern matching techniques are employed for the reconstruction of wall paintings, depicting spirals, from their constituent fragments. The article discusses an engineering project which investigates the existence of a seismic culture on the island of Lefkada, off the West coast of Greece, and its influence on the vulnerability of the local population to earthquakes. The factors that may retain or eliminate this culture and the extent to which this is desirable and possible in the context of sustainable earthquake mitigation and overall development are assessed. The importance of local context in the study of seismic cultures justifies the selection of the case study as an appropriate research strategy for the project.
