This paper analyzed the flux characteristics of a single-phase tubular switched reluctance linear motor (TSRLM) based on magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) method. The single-phase TSRLM is divided into five different parts, which are the teeth of the stator, the yoke of the stator, air gap, the teeth of the mover, and the yoke of the mover. The reluctance of every part is expressed in analytical formulas at five special mover positions. The flux linkages at five special mover positions are calculated by magnet tube method and Gauss–Seidel iteration method which takes the saturation into consideration. A high-order Fourier series method is used to map the nonlinear relationship between flux linkage, current, and mover position with the flux linkage data calculated by the MEC method. The calculated flux linkage is consistent with 3-D finite-element method and experimental results. The dynamic and static performance of the simulation utilized with MEC method is consistent with those in experiments, which verifies the accuracy of the MEC method proposed in this paper. This paper presents a novel methodology to estimate the saturation curve parameters of single-phase transformers, using minimum information from inrush and no-load tests. Only the value of the first current peak and the decay time are used from a unique inrush test, and only the third and fifth current harmonics from a unique no-load test. The proposed methodology is based on the existence of a signature for each transformer which can be easily obtained and characterize all possible inrush currents. This is the main contribution of the paper. Different transformers with different parameters have been tested in the laboratory. Experiments and simulations are carried out to validate the methodology. First, the respective no-load and inrush tests are made. Second, the parameters of each transformer are estimated. Third, the performance and accuracy of the proposed methodology are verified by a close agreement between the measured and the estimated saturation curves and between the simulated and the recorded inrush waveforms. Some remarkable advantages of the proposed methodology are: (a) considers the deep saturation, (b) avoids the need to know the residual flux (or to demagnetize the transformer) and the switching angle from the inrush test, and (c) it is computationally straightforward. In an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) with segmented skewed poles, the armature reaction magnetic field (AR-MF) changes nonlinearly due to the saturation of the rotor magnetic barrier. Meanwhile, this varies under different excitation currents. As a result, it is difficult to be calculated by means of analytical methods. In this paper, the calculation model of AR-MF of IPMSM is first established by vector superposition method, without considering the saturation effect of rotor and the slotting effect of stator. In the second step, the virtual magnetic field of the rotor is introduced to quantitatively calculate the influence of local inhomogeneous saturation on the AR-MF. The latter is derived by combining both the subdomain method and equivalent magnetic circuit method. The complex relative permeance is also introduced to establish the AR-MF accounting for the stator slotting effect. To validate the AR-MF calculation method proposed, an 8-pole 48-slot IPMSM with segmented skewed poles is considered as a case study, showing a comparison by both with finite element (FE) results and the electromagnetic torque measured on a test bench. The quantitative analysis of the iron loss taking magnetic hysteresis behavior into account is essential for the development of high-efficiency electric machines. In a previous paper, a novel magnetic circuit model incorporating a play model, which is one of the phenomenological models of magnetic hysteresis, was proposed. It was clear that the proposed model can calculate the hysteresis loop of a ring core with high speed and high accuracy. However, this method was applied only for the objects with simple shapes. Thus, it is necessary to extend the applicable range for the objects with more complicated shapes. This paper presents a novel reluctance network analysis (RNA) model incorporating the play model and indicates the validity of the proposed RNA model by using a three-phase-laminated-core variable inductor as an object of discussion. In this paper, the design of the concentrated flux-type synchronous motor (CFSM) using ferrite permanent magnets to improve torque is proposed for an automotive chassis actuator. The thin pancake type CFSM of this paper has considerable axial magnetic leakage flux due to structural reasons. It is, therefore, necessary to improve the torque. In order to meet the required specifications in a constrained installation space, this paper proposes two methods for torque improvement. The first method is the alternate-stacking core as this structure removes the magnetic leakage flux path. The second method is the rotor overhang that increases the air-gap flux density. Furthermore, the structures require a three-dimensional (3-D) finite element method (FEM) analysis for accuracy. However, to analyze the characteristics easily and quickly, the 3-D structure is made into the equivalent 2-D FEM through an analytical method using an equivalent magnetic circuit. Pulsed alternator (PA) is a kind of high-power pulsed supplies widely applied in the field of electromagnetic (EM) launch. Over the past decades, the self-excited air-core PA is widely studied, but it has the disadvantages of poor heat transfer and high electric field loss. The hybrid excitation PA combined with the advantages of electric excitation and permanent magnet excitation PA, and the output voltage of armature winding can be adjusted by the electric field current. This paper presents double-electric-excitation hybrid excitation compensated PA (DEE-HECPA). In order to improve the adjustable performance for the output voltage of HECPA, the rotor structure is changed and double excitation coils are used in PA. In this paper, the equivalent magnetic circuit model for hybrid excitation region is established and the air-gap flux density is calculated. The dimensional parameters are calculated by the special EM design method for PA, the characteristics of electric excitation are verified by finite-element analysis, and the characteristics of output current for DEE-HECPA are analyzed. This paper presents an analysis of efficiency for passive magnetic gear resulting from the selection of materials and structures in the magnetic circuit. A particular attention is paid to the structure of modulator, which forms the crucial element of the system, and which can be designed in a variety of ways. In this paper, the considered alternatives include a modulator design manufactured from soft magnetic composite material and from circumferentially and axially stacked lamination. Based on the experimentally determined efficiency versus load curves, the study demonstrates that the soft magnetic modulator has similar performance as for the case of a circumferentially and axially stacked lamination. In this paper, a novel dual-rotor axial-gap flux-switching permanent-magnet machine with dc excitation winding is proposed. First, the topology and operation principles of the proposed topology are clarified. Basic design equations and parameters are provided, and the electromagnetic analyses of the proposed flux-switching machine with 3-D FEA are performed. Parametric optimizations using 3-D FEA are completed for different dc excitations. A prototype machine is manufactured, tested, and validated. This paper presents a fast analytical model for estimating the components of the PM flux density distribution in the air-gap for a number of interior permanent magnet synchronous machines (IPMSMs). Deriving the two-dimensional (2-D) analytical model for IPMSMs is more challenging compared to that of surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous machines (SPMSMs) due to the inconsistent geometry of the rotor in polar coordinates. IPMSMs are usually modeled by using 0-D or 1-D methods such as the magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC); however, the MEC method is unable to take into account the tangential component of the magnetic flux density vector. In this paper, a 2-D analytical no-load electromagnetic model for five rotor topologies of IPMSMs is proposed. The effects of the stator slots on the radial component of the PM flux density distribution in the air-gap are then included by defining an air-gap function. The effects of the stator slots on the tangential components of the PM flux density distribution in the air-gap are also considered by injecting virtual surface currents (VSCs) or virtual permanent magnets (VPMs). Magnetic gears can perform the same function as mechanical gears with the added benefits inherent to contactless power transfer. However, quick and accurate analysis tools are required for magnetic gears to reach their full potential. As end effects can significantly impact the slip torque of a magnetic gear, 2D models often overestimate the slip torques, so 3D models are frequently required. Therefore, this paper proposes a 3D linear Magnetic Equivalent Circuit (MEC) or reluctance network model of radial flux magnetic gears with surface mounted magnets. This is an extension of a previously developed 2D MEC model, and, like the previous 2D model, it is thoroughly parametrized so that it can be directly applied to a wide range of parametric cases. A semi-high-speed magnetic levitation (maglev) train with a maximum speed of 200 km/h is being developed in Korea. It utilizes linear induction motors for propulsion and adopts electromagnetic suspension for levitation. For high-speed operation, guidance systems should be adopted to stabilize the train especially on curved tracks. For compatibility of the rail with previously developed urban maglev trains, the installation of the guidance electromagnet has to be restricted to be placed near the levitation electromagnet. Owing to the spatial closeness, mutual magnetic flux by the levitation and guidance electromagnets is produced at an overlapping portion of the rail. For stable control of the two systems, the coupling effects must be analyzed, because the levitation and guidance electromagnets are not operated independently. This paper aims to analyze the coupling effects by considering the magnetic field and a magnetic equivalent circuit. The objective of this two-part paper is to provide clarity to physical concepts used in the field of transformer modeling, to dispel common misconceptions regarding numerical instabilities, and to present unified modeling techniques for low-frequency transients. This paper focuses on proper modeling of nonlinearities (magnetizing branches) since these components are critical to determine the low-frequency behavior. A good low-frequency model should properly represent: normal operation, inrush currents, open and short circuit, out-of-phase synchronization transient of step-up transformers, geomagnetic-induced currents, ferroresonance, and harmonics. This paper discusses the derivation of electrical dual models from the equivalent (magnetic) reluctance networks and the direct application of the principle of duality. It is shown that different dual models need to be derived for different transformer geometries and the advantages and disadvantages of each method are discussed. This paper also compares double-sided versus single-sided dual models, and shows that the double-sided model is a more general approach. The mathematical equivalency of several leakage models (negative inductance, mutual coupling, and BCTRAN) is demonstrated for three-winding transformers. It is also shown that contrary to common belief, a negative inductance is not the source of numerical oscillations, but they occur due to the use of noncorrect topological models for representing the core. Optical current transducers (OCTs) have clear advantages over conventional current transformers. To better understand the OCT performance, a basic OCT model is developed using finite-element analysis. To model an open-core OCT, the Faraday rotation and detection is implemented in the COMSOL Multiphysics. This paper introduces two experimental setups, which can be used for studying OCT performances under ac and dc excitations. The measured data agree with simulation results and validate the proposed model. This paper describes experimental verification of single-phase variable inductor prototypes rated at 2.4 kVAr (75 mH, 10 A, 230 V, 24 kg) and 12 kVAr (43 mH, 30 A, 400 V, 78 kg). Results for much smaller devices rated at 1-10 Var are also shown. The variability of inductance of the main AC winding was achieved by adding a DC winding, wound through the apertures placed symmetrically in the core such that both windings were magnetically orthogonal. Local saturation caused by the magnetic field due to DC winding creates virtual air gaps. This method is capable of lowering the main inductance by over 90% if no real air gap is present, but for industrial applications the range of variability is likely to be closer to 20-30% range, depending on the size of the real air gap in the magnetic circuit. The amount of variation/control can be improved by using more than one control winding. Very good repeatability of performance was observed, with relatively small total harmonic distortion introduced due to control. The experimental findings agree with a generalised analytical model. For the advantages of oriented silicon steel sheet (OSSS) with better magnetic permeability in the rolling direction, this paper proposes a permanent magnet (PM) torque motor with armature teeth made by OSSS. This paper introduces the influence of unequal tooth width on the winding factor and the width calculation method of the armature teeth tip top, and analyzes the torque performance improvement by OSSS. In the end, based on testing the B-H waves of OSSS, the flux linkage, back electromotive force, rated torque and overload torque of three motors with different structure or material are compared by finite element software. This paper presents a new structure of Permanent Magnet Flux-Switching Linear Motor (PM-FSLM) with a simple low weight modular primary and acceptable thrust ripple production. A flexible Magnetic Equivalent Circuit (MEC) is applied for modeling the proposed machine, which is capable to analyze the performance of different structures of PM-FSLMs. The saturation and end-effect phenomena are considered by a nonlinear permeability function and virtual zones at both ends of the machine, respectively. The machine operation under dynamic load is also investigated and its specifications are obtained. The proposed PM-FSLM has more power capability, lower current un-symmetry, and simpler mover structure compared to other ones, which can be mentioned as its benefits. Finally, the results of the proposed method are validated by the Finite Element Method (FEM) to show the effectiveness of the proposed MEC technique in terms of accuracy and processing time. To solve the problem that coupled magnetic flux and saturation of active magnetic bearing (AMB) cannot be taken into account in the traditional magnetic circuit calculation method together, this paper proposes a novel analytical calculation method based on distributed magnetic circuit method (DMCM). First, a magnetic circuit model with multiple magnetic circuits is built, we can obtain the initial flux density of each section by magnetic circuit calculation. Next, the magnetomotive force (MMF) of each magnetic circuit is calculated by the B-H curve of the ferromagnetic material. Then, the air-gap flux density under each magnetic pole center is obtained by further iterative calculations according to the magnetic potential error. On the basis, the flux density distribution along the air-gap circumference is obtained by one-dimensional (1D) relative permeance function, and thus the bearing capacity is derived and a loss calculation method is introduced. In this paper, the characteristics analysis of the surface-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous motor is carried out using the method of reflecting the axial leakage magnetic flux into the 2-D finite-element analysis (2-D FEA), and the result is discussed. For the method of projecting the axial leakage flux on the 2-D plane, the permeance coefficient was introduced. By using the proposed method, the parameters such as d- and q-axes inductance and linkage flux for d- and q-axes equivalent circuit analysis were calculated, and the characteristics analysis was performed. In this paper, a nonlinear analysis model for predicting the performance of eddy current recoil brakes (ECRB) is proposed by combining the magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) model and the subdomain model. The subdomain model introduces the equivalent region to improve the inherent shortcomings of the equivalent current sheet (ECS) method. The outer tube is divided into a magnetic saturated region and an unsaturated region in the subdomain model to simulate the magnetic saturation of the outer tube during recoil. The MEC model is applied to calculate the air gap magnetic flux density and the relative permeability of the equivalent region. Leakage flux and magnetic saturation are considered in the MEC model. The eddy current resistance of ECRB is calculated by the subdomain model. The model is verified by the finite element model, and it is able to predict the performance of ECRB with different structural parameters. In addition, the prototype of the ECRB was manufactured. This paper analyzes magnet defect fault signature in the surface-mounted permanent magnet motor (SPMM) using nonlinear analytical model considering the influence of magnet shape and magnetization direction. Based on the surface current method and conformal mapping technique, the magnet defect equivalent current and equivalent nonlinearity current are proposed to represent the magnet defect. Accordingly, the performance of SPMM can be obtained. The proposed model has great potential to investigate SPMM with non-uniform magnet defect and gives theoretical basis for fault diagnosis. The extra sensing coil is added to measure the voltage waveforms, which can also be predicted using the nonlinear analytical model and shows the influence of magnet defect fault. This paper presents an analytical approach to determine the air-gap magnetic field and the winding inductance in the brushless doubly-fed reluctance machine (BDFRM) with flux barriers. By dividing one flux guide layer into several segments, a calculus method based on magnetic circuit analysis is developed and specific analytical expression of the air-gap flux density is rigorously derived. Then, the included angle between fundamental components with the same pole pairs is also discussed. Based on the air-gap flux density distribution, the inductance expressions between different windings are also presented. Three kinds of finite element analysis models are established and studied. This paper proposes a novel analytical model which combines subdomain method and magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) method to predict the no-load performance of V-shape interior permanent magnet (IPM) motors with any slot-pole combination considering the nonlinearity of magnetic bridges (MBs). The V-shape magnets are equivalent to the form of distribution along radial and tangential directions, and the motor is divided into two corresponding structures to facilitate the establishment of subdomains. To consider the saturation of MBs, the MEC method are employed to obtain the permeability of MBs to establish the boundary conditions. The no-load magnetic field of slotless motor can be obtained by solving the equations established by boundary conditions, and the conformal mapping is used to consider the effect of slotting. The proposed model can be used to calculate the no-load magnetic field, back electromotive force, and cogging torque of IPM motor. The results are verified by finite element analysis (FEA) and experiments, which confirms the validity of the model for facilitating the motor design and optimization. Compared with FEA, the proposed method has the advantages of faster modeling, shorter time consuming and meanwhile achieves the approximate accuracy. The torque ripple of a switched reluctance motor (SRM) should be taken into account, as it can have negative effects on a connected gearbox and/or load. In this paper a concept and two realization methods for the reduction of the torque ripple are presented. An optimized alignment of the active elements of the stator leads to a reduction of this torque ripple. The first method proposed here is a four-fold segmented motor, which can reduce the torque ripple by 37.3 %. This can be achieved by segmentation in combination with a clever arrangement of active elements. However, this increases the number of necessary inverters, which increases redundancy and therefore leads to more security. A second method of achieving an equal reduction can be obtained by using a “double stator” motor. In this configuration both stators can be powered together. With this concept, the number of converters is halved compared to the first mentioned solution. This saves electronic components and thus reduces the effort. The aim of this paper is to assess the efficacy of non-conformal meshing in mesh-based generated reluctance network modeling. A representative semi-numerical example is introduced to demonstrate the possibilities and accuracy offered by a non-conformal meshing. In a conformal mesh, two reluctance block elements share the same branch. This makes the computation faster and more accurate but is not convenient for motion processing or mesh relaxation and it does not solve the air-gap modeling problem (rotor/stator connectivity). To solve this, different approaches are used. The interpolation approach developed in this paper aims to render motion processing independent of discretization. This approach is also applied to couple different meshes (spatial discretization) and makes it possible to connect a lumped parameter model to a meshed one. The model is divided into independent zones that are connected via the interpolation coupling. Several reluctance network (RN) non-conformal meshes are presented and global quantities are compared to a fine-meshed finite-element model. Magnetic saturation is considered in the iron parts. Comparisons are provided under open-circuit and on-load configurations for flux linkage and force. The main advantage is to overcome the limitations of generic RN for which the movement modeling requires remeshing at each position. A novel multi-function saturated-core fault current limiter (MFCL) with two operating modes is proposed in this paper. MFCL can achieve fault current limitation and power flow management by switching operating mode: current-limiting mode and power-flow-controlling mode, which realizes technology convergence. The MFCL consists of an iron core with rotatable magnetic valve, ac coils, dc coils, and a fault-limiting reactor. The operating principle of the MFCL and the design of the rotatable magnetic valve are analyzed in this paper. The finite-element analysis (FEA) model based on Maxwell is used to analyze the MFCL. A single-phase tubular permanent magnet linear generator (TPMLG) with a novel structure for Stirling engines is presented in this paper. TPMLG can directly convert mechanical energy into electrical energy and it is the main energy conversion device in Stirling power generation system. Its 3-D geometry and initial dimensions are given in detail. Due to the structural characteristic, the finite element (FE) method (FEM) is used to analyze the electromagnetic field. An FE model is established from the magnetic field perspective. Isolines of magnetic vector potential can be obtained, as TPMLG locates at −0.015, 0, and 0.015 m. The dynamic performances of TPMLG under different reciprocating frequencies are compared and analyzed. In this paper, the magnetic integration of resonant reset forward (RRF) converter and magnetic-thermal coupling analysis of integrated magnetic (IM) components are explored. The formulas of magnetic reluctance, winding turns, and magnetic flux density are obtained based on the equivalent magnetic circuit and minimum current pulsation scheme. Meanwhile, circuit-field coupling model of RRF converter and magnetic-thermal coupling model of IM components are built with the finite-element analysis (FEA) method. The simulation results illustrate that the core of the integrated RRF converter works in an unsaturated condition, the temperature rise of IM components is about 20 °C, and the integrated RRF converter has almost the same power efficiency as the conventional discrete RRF converter. Furthermore, hardware prototypes are fabricated and tested to verify the simulation accuracy and design validity. This paper gives a way to analyze the flux characteristic of a single-phase tubular permanent magnet linear motor (TPMLM) based on the 3-D magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) method. By studying the flux tubes of this single-phase TPMLM with the finite-element analysis software—FLUX, a 3-D MEC model of this motor can be constructed, and the flux linkage of the single-phase TPMLM can also be calculated. The static and dynamic performances of the single-phase TPMLM calculated with the 3-D MEC model are compared with the 3-D finite-element model and experimental results, which verify the correctness of the proposed 3-D MEC model. Magnetic fluid is a new type of functional materials. The seal of reciprocating shaft is a typical application of the magnetic fluid. However, there is little research on the magnetic fluid reciprocating seals, thus improving the sealing life and seal capacity is the key problem of studying the reciprocating seals. This paper presents a structure of the seal to test the sealing life and other characteristics. The magnetic field of the seal is estimated using the finite-element method. The thickness of the magnetic fluid on the surface of reciprocating shaft and the flow rate of magnetic fluid are obtained theoretically. The experimental result shows that the static seal capacity is related to the fluid volume. The static seal capacity obtained by experiment is approximately equal to the value through the simulation with sufficient magnetic fluid. The relationship between sealing life and the motion of the reciprocating shaft is obtained experimentally. The sealing life decreases rapidly with the increase of the stroke and velocity. Nanosecond and subnanosecond high-voltage pulses have used in new biological applications, such as cancer treatment using an ultrashort pulsed high electric field. For this treatment, the use of high-power pulsed electromagnetic wave has been proposed to obtain the required high electric field. This paper focuses on the design of a compact high-power pulsed electromagnetic wave generator using a nanosecond pulsed power generator for cancer treatment. We developed a pulsed power generator that continuously outputs multiple pulses via a nonlinear transmission line (NLTL) using magnetic switches. The NLTL comprises a ladder of capacitors and saturable inductors. The NLTL generates a pulse train by delaying the propagation of the pulse using the magnetic switch of each ladder. The frequency of repetition of the burst pulse is 13.8 MHz. The peak output voltage is 7 kV at the maximum input voltage of 28 kV. This paper investigates the partial irreversible demagnetization characteristics of magnets in flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machines. Two different partial demagnetization mechanisms in the FSPM machines are modeled and demonstrated. The 2-D finite-element analysis (FEA) results for a baseline 10 kW 15 kr/min ferrite FSPM machine verify the validity of the proposed partial demagnetization model. Performance degradation due to demagnetization is evaluated for the baseline machine based on the FEA results. This paper also proposes a novel design to enhance the demagnetization withstand capability. This research reveals the most vulnerable region of the magnet to irreversible demagnetization in the FSPM machines. Permanent magnet (PM) materials are nowadays widely used in the electrical machine manufacturing industry. The eddy-current loss models of PMs used in electrical machines are frequently discussed in research papers. In magnetic steel materials we have, in addition to eddy-current losses, there are hysteresis losses when alternating current or a rotating flux travels through the material. Should a similar phenomenon be also taken into account in calculating the losses of PMs? Every now and then, authors seem to assume that some significant hysteresis losses are present in rotating machine PMs. This paper studies the mechanisms of possible hysteresis losses in PMs and their role in PMs when used in rotating electrical machines. In recent years, microgrid technologies have gained considerable interest, where a common dc-bus is generally used to interconnect multiple power sources. The existing technology of common dc bus-based direct integration of multiple sources has some critical problems, such as isolation and the requirement of additional control circuit for voltage imbalance and common mode. A common high-frequency magnetic bus (instead of the common dc bus) is proposed in this paper to overcome the limitations and complications of the existing technology of dc bus-based direct integration of multiple sources. In this paper, an extensive investigation on electromagnetic performance of advanced magnetic materials (amorphous and nanocrystalline alloys) is presented. The design process of an efficient and compact high-frequency common magnetic bus for integration of multiple power sources is also discussed. The new technology will be a fundamental component for the future grids to interconnect various sources magnetically, providing an inherent solution to voltage imbalance and isolation problems. Incipient stator winding fault in permanent magnet synchronous wind generators (PMSWGs) is very difficult to be detected as the fault generated variations in terminal electrical parameters are very weak and chaotic. This paper simulates the incipient stator winding faults at different degree of insulation degradation of one turn in the winding of a PMSWG. Cosimulation method by combining finite element model and external circuits is used. Hilbert–Huang transformation is applied to detect the very early stage fault in interturn insulation by analyzing the stator current. This paper deals with an analytical model of the virtual air gap (VAG) function in order to define design rules when this technique is used inside complex devices. The establishment of those design rules constitutes the main originality of the developments presented in this paper, which are about a single-phase magnetic core. It is based on the definition of a nonlinear reluctance network that takes simultaneously into account the effects of dc and ac magnetic flux components in the disturbed area that contains the VAG. This paper presents a novel leakage model for transformers that includes losses. This new model is physically based (topological) and it is possible to connect it to a topological core model without using any fictitious windings. The methods to calculate its parameters from standard test data and from design data are detailed within the paper. The results show that the new coupled leakage model with losses is able to match exactly the test report, when using standard test data. This paper aims to propose a new Vernier reluctance machine (VRM), which integrates the advantages of a robust rotor structure, good torque density, and flexible flux control ability. The key is to establish the excitation field with both stator slot permanent magnets (PMs) and zero-sequence current. Two excitation sources have different pole pair numbers but share a parallel magnetic circuit and contribute to superimposed torque in this machine. Meanwhile, a flexible flux control can be achieved by regulating zero-sequence current, and little demagnetization risk exists for slot PMs during flux control. In this paper, the machine configuration and operation principle are introduced, along with its integrated ac and dc drive method. Electromagnetic performance of this new machine is evaluated by finite-element analysis. Leading design parameters are determined and optimized considering optimal injection ratio of zero-sequence current. This paper presents the magnetic and electrical equivalent circuits of a hysteresis interior permanent magnet (IPM) motor. A hysteresis IPM motor is a solid rotor hybrid synchronous motor combining hysteresis phenomena and permanent excitation in the rotor. When installed in thousands of feet under the sea to drive an electric submersible pump (ESP), it can self-start the ESP without the need of any position sensors, and can improve the efficiency, the performance, and the reliability of the ESP. In this paper, equivalent circuit models are used to predict the transient run-up responses of a 2.5 kW prototype hysteresis IPM motor. Analysis results are compared with 2-D finite-element analysis (FEA) results as well as experimental results. There exists a reasonably close agreement between analytical, FEA, and experimental results, which validates the accuracy of the equivalent circuit models of a hysteresis IPM motor. In this paper, a vernier motor with a spoke permanent-magnet (PM) structure instead of a surface PM is proposed in order to obtain higher power factor (PF) and flux density. However, upon investigating this structure with a single gap, unique effects that virtually eliminate the vernier effect are analytically identified. To avoid these effects and improve the PF, a spoke PM vernier motor with a double gap is then proposed. Analytic equations for back electromotive force and the PF are then derived for this motor in terms of various geometric factors such as the numbers of magnets and winding poles, the magnet thickness, etc. For a case study, the practical achievable maximum power and PF are calculated and verified with accurate simulations. This paper proposes a new equivalent magnetic network (EMN) model for vehicular dual-permanent-magnet vernier (DPMV) machines by applying a generalized modeling method. First, the magnetic circuit method and the meshing method are combined together to improve the modeling efficiency of the DPMV machine. The magnetic circuit method is used to generate conventional lumped parameter permeances to shorten time consumption, whereas the mesh method is utilized in disordered magnetic fields to obtain high precision. Second, a meshing solution for oblique region is proposed to enhance modeling flexibility. Moreover, the flux distributions in meshes are represented without magnetic field pre-delineation, which enables its utilization as a self-adaptive reluctance network model in design optimization. Finally, the proposed EMN model is used to predict the performance of the DPMV machine, considering leakage magnetic flux, local iron saturation, and magnetic field modulation effect simultaneously. In this paper, a dual-slot power pickup suitable for an inductive power track system was developed using contactless power transmission techniques. A new strip-type inductive power track with high magnetic flux density and magnetic field uniformity is proposed. A dual-slot type power-pickup structure with high magnetic flux linkage was designed using equivalent magnetic circuit model analysis to improve the power transmission capacity and transmitting efficiency. To verify the contactless transmission characteristics of the proposed strip-type inductive power track system, a 1.2 m long laboratory-scale inductive power track was constructed. The SPLSC topology was used as the compound resonant circuit of a full-bridge inverter. Interior permanent magnet (IPM) machines with spoke-type design are very attractive for several applications, including vehicle traction, which requires a good flux weakening performance to achieve high speed. For this purpose, a high demagnetizing current is usually injected to reduce the machine flux at high speed, with detrimental effect in terms of efficiency. This problem can be mitigated by equipping the rotor with a mechanical flux weakening device, which activates during high-speed operation by centrifugal force. This paper addresses the analytical modeling of this special kind of IPM motor through a simplified magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) approach, which incorporates saturation and slotting effects as well as the flux weakening device operation. It is shown how the MEC model can effectively describe the IPM machine behavior despite its simplicity. Results are successfully validated by comparison both with finite element analysis, which requires much more computational resources, and with measurements from laboratory prototype testing. This paper proposes an optimized design of permanent magnet (PM) synchronous motor (PMSM) using hybrid-type PM for improving the output characteristics and reliability. Here, the hybrid-type PM is defined as using both neodymium PM (Nd-PM) and ferrite PM (Fe-PM) in a rotor. First, a basic design of PMSM is conducted by considering the magnetic equivalent circuit and applying the magnetic characteristic of Fe-PM changed by the reversed flux of Nd-PM. For optimizing the motor using hybrid-type PM, parallel configuration of reluctance factors is helpful for increasing the output characteristics, and it is analyzed by using a finite element method (FEM). In addition, by using an algorithm, an optimized design is suggested for obtaining maximum torque. The performances of target and proposed motors are compared through FEM. Next, the irreversible demagnetization of each motor is analyzed at high and low temperature, and the demagnetization phenomenon of two-type motors is compared for verifying the reliability of the proposed motor. This paper presents a novel approach for incorporating noncuboidal and rotated cuboidal sources of magnetic field in 3-D Fourier modeling. Based on the periodicity present in the geometry, a Fourier integral is applied in two directions. By changing the integration boundaries in the $y$ -direction to a linear function of the $x$ -direction, nonideally shaped magnetic field sources (i.e., coils and permanent magnets) are incorporated. In order to design a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), the inductance must be computed. In this paper, the flux concentrating PMSM (FCPMSM) is introduced. Calculating the inductance is difficult because of the complex structure of the rotor. Because the rib and the bridge consist of an iron core, they have nonlinear characteristics. In order to obtain the effective value of the inductance, nonlinear characteristics must be considered in a magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC). In this paper, to calculate the inductance of an FCPMSM, the relative permeance of the rotor was analyzed. Then, the dq-axis MEC, including the nonlinear magnetic reluctance, was created using the flux line. Magnetic pulse compression (MPC) systems are suitable for generating dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) owing to their capability of producing high-amplitude, short pulse voltage waves. This paper proposes a high-frequency, bipolar magnetic compression system to study DBD plasma characteristics. First, the principle of bipolar MPC is explained [a bipolar MPC system comprises a full bridge inverter circuit, pulse transformer (PT), and magnetic switch (MS)]. Additionally, the design of the PT and MS is described. Then, the waveform of the resistive load is tested and compared with PSpice simulation results. It was found that the nanosecond pulse generator produces a pulse on a resistor with an amplitude of 0–13 kV, a rise time of approximately 100 ns, and a repetition frequency of 0 to several kHz. Finally, this paper studies the plasma characteristics under the application of a high-frequency bipolar pulse, and the charge–voltage Lissajous figure of the discharge waveform is analyzed. Combining discharge photographs and theoretical calculation results yields the relationship between the discharge characteristics and the frequency, which enriches the theoretical study of high-frequency bipolar discharges. This paper aims at describing the influence of shielding on the magnetizing magnetic field measured with an H-coil system, used in a double-yoked single-sheet tester. By the mean of a positioning system especially conceived for the purpose of this paper, the magnetic field is measured at different distances from the laminated sheet. The evolution of this field along the perpendicular line thus defined shows a distinctive behavior, whether the measure is realized in the presence of a magnetic shield or not. A description of the obtained experimental results is made, and a comparison with numerical models is realized. This paper presents an improved magnetic circuit (MC) model considering the leakage, cross coupling, and saturation effects for the performance analysis of an integrated 3 degrees of freedom magnetic bearing (3-DOF MB). Compared with the conventional MC model, this paper analyzes the permanent-magnet bias field, radial and axial control current fields together. By using this improved MC model, it reveals the cross-coupling effect between radial and axial directions in such an integrated 3-DOF MB. The stiffnesses of radial force are significantly influenced by the axial control current, while the stiffnesses of the axial force are independent of the radial control current. Wireless power transfer (WPT) technology has become a popular research direction in the field of industrial applications, with the advantages of contactless operation, high degree of freedom, and great controllability. However, there are still some challenging issues that need to be resolved. First of all, more advanced circuit topologies and magnetic coupling structures need to be designed to achieve the power conversion goals of diversified applications. Second, novel control methods, optimization algorithms, and modeling methods enable systems to be better controlled and designed. This paper presents a new Magnetic Equivalent Circuit (MEC) to model the Variable Reluctance Resolver (VR-Resolver) and study the effect of different windings configurations on its performance. Therefore, VR-Resolver with non-overlapping (constant turn) and overlapping (variable turn) windings are modeled to investigate their effect on the accuracy of obtained results. The proposed method gives the possibility to model both healthy and faulty conditions by a unique model to analyze faults effects on the position error. For this purpose, the inter-turn fault is considered on the excitation winding, and both dynamic and static eccentric rotors (DE and SE) are studied. It is shown that the variable turn VR-Resolver has more accuracy and lower sensitivity to eccentricity fault, while the constant turn type is less sensitive to inter-turn fault. However, the latter may be preferred in some applications thanks to its simpler windings and lower manufacturing costs. Finally, the MEC results are proved by Finite Element Method (FEM) and experimental results.
