This study presents a novel high density surface electromyography (EMG) decomposition method, named as 2CFastICA, because it incorporates two key algorithms: kernel constrained FastICA and correlation constrained FastICA. The former focuses on overcoming the local convergence of FastICA without requiring the peel-off strategy used in the progressive FastICA peel-off (PFP) framework. The latter further refines the output of kernel constrained FastICA by correcting possible erroneous or missed spikes. The two constrained FastICA algorithms supplement each other to warrant the decomposition performance. The 2CFastICA method was validated using simulated surface EMG signals with different motor unit numbers and signal to noise ratios (SNRs). Two source validation was also performed by simultaneous high density surface EMG and intramuscular EMG recordings, showing a matching rate (MR) of (97.2 ± 3.5)% for 170 common motor units. In addition, a different form of two source validation was also conducted taking advantages of the high density surface EMG characteristics of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, showing a MR of (99.4 ± 0.9)% for 34 common motor units from interference and sparse datasets. Both simulation and experimental results indicate that 2CFastICA can achieve similar decomposition performance to PFP. However, the efficiency of decomposition can be greatly improved by 2CFastICA since the complex signal processing procedures associated with the peel-off strategy are not required any more. Along with this paper, we also provide the MATLAB open source code of 2CFastICA for high density surface EMG decomposition.

Machine vision and artificial intelligence hold promise across healthcare applications. In this paper, we focus on the emerging research direction of infant action recognition, and we specifically consider the task of reaching which is an important developmental milestone. We develop E-babyNet, a lightweight yet effective neural-network-based framework for infant action recognition that leverages the spatial and temporal correlation of bounding boxes of infants' hands and objects to reach for to determine the onset and offset of the reaching action. E-babyNet consists of two main layers based on two LSTM and a Bidirectional LSTM (BiLSTM) model, respectively. The first layer provides a pre-evaluation of the reaching action for each hand by providing onset and offset keyframes. Then, the biLSTM model merges the previous outputs to deliver an outcome of the reaching actions detection for each frame including the reaching hand. We evaluated our approach against four other lightweight structures using a dataset comprising 5,865 annotated images resulting in 16,337 bounding boxes from 375 distinctive infant reaching actions performed while sitting by different subjects in unconstrained (home/clinic) environments. Results illustrate the effectiveness of our approach and ability to provide reliable reaching action detection and offer onset and offset keyframes with a precision of one frame. Moreover, the biLSTM layer can handle the transition between reaching actions and help reduce false detections.

Motivated by applications in data center networks, in this paper, we study the problem of scheduling in an input queued switch. While throughput maximizing algorithms in a switch are well-understood, delay analysis was developed only recently. It was recently shown that the well-known MaxWeight algorithm achieves optimal scaling of mean queue lengths in steady state in the heavy-traffic regime, and is within a factor less than 2 of a universal lower bound. However, MaxWeight is not used in practice because of its high time complexity. In this paper, we study several low complexity algorithms and show that their heavy-traffic performance is identical to that of MaxWeight. We first present a negative result that picking a random schedule does not have optimal heavy-traffic scaling of queue lengths even under uniform traffic. We then show that if one picks the best among two matchings or modifies a random matching even a little, using the so-called flip operation, it leads to MaxWeight like heavy-traffic performance under uniform traffic. We then focus on the case of non-uniform traffic and show that a large class of low time complexity algorithms have the same heavy-traffic performance as MaxWeight, as long as it is ensured that a MaxWeight matching is picked often enough. We also briefly discuss the performance of these algorithms in the large scale heavy-traffic regime when the size of the switch increases simultaneously with the load. Craters are among the most abundant features on the surface of many planets with great importance for planetary scientists. They reveal chronology information about planets and may be used for autonomous spacecraft navigation and landing. Although numerous research efforts have been carried out in the field of crater detection, existing crater detection algorithms (CDAs) are only helpful in a limited number of applications. A promising crater detection approach involves two main steps: 1) hypothesis generation (HG) and 2) hypothesis verification (HV). During HG, potential crater locations are detected. The validity of the hypothesized crater locations is then tested in a HV step. In this context, we discuss some commonly used algorithms for HG such as highlight-shadow region detection and Hough transform as well as our novel and enhanced algorithms based on interest point detection and convex grouping. A key objective of this paper is to analyze their performance while paying special attention to how they affect the accuracy of the verification step. To deal with different size craters, we focus on multiscale HG. For HV, we have chosen convolutional neural networks which have recently achieved state-of-the-art performance in many computer vision applications. Due to the variation of test sets in the literature, it is often challenging to compare the performance of different CDAs in a fair way. In this paper, we present a comprehensive performance evaluation and comparison of CDAs. Each algorithm has been trained/tested using common data sets generated by a systematic approach. This paper addresses a UAV path planning problem for a team of cooperating heterogeneous vehicles composed of one unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and multiple unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs). The UGVs are used as mobile actuators and scattered in a large area. To achieve multi-UGV communication and collaboration, the UAV, modeled as a Dubins vehicle, serves as a messenger to fly over the effective communication range of all UGVs to relay information. The curvature-constrained path planning of the messenger UAV is formulated as a Dubins Traveling Salesman Problem with Dynamic Neighborhood (DTSPDN) which is a complex optimization problem involving coupled variables and contains dynamic constraints. We design an effective memetic algorithm to find the shortest route that enables the messenger UAV to visit all moving UGVs. This algorithm combines the genetic algorithm procedure, two kinds of local search operators based on gradient search and uniform sampling respectively, and a gradient-based repair operator to repair the solutions violating dynamic constraints. During the evolutionary process, a special phenomenon may occur that changing some decision variables (i.e., visiting sequence and location) may not affect the evaluation function value, but may alter the feasible region of another decision variable (i.e., visiting time) due to the encounter constraint between the UAV and UGV. To track and utilize the change of the feasible region, a transformation procedure is proposed to change one solution to another with less visiting time by analyzing the encounter pattern between UAV and UGV. The computational results on random instances with different scales demonstrate that the proposed approach can effectively generate better curvature-constrained tours to encounter all moving UGVs when compared to other four competitive algorithms in the literature. These UGVs are required to execute tasks (e.g., firefighting, search and rescue) within a large area. Due to their limited communication capabilities, they may be unable to obtain necessary information from other UGVs. We propose a novel memetic algorithm to efficiently search for the shortest tour that enables the messenger UAV to visit all moving UGVs. The memetic algorithm combines the parallel global search virtue of genetic algorithm with efficient local search procedure to improve the generated tour. A gradient-based repair procedure is also employed to make sure that the planned tour can guide the UAV to sequentially encounter each moving UGV. Simulations exhibit that the proposed approach can effectively generate high-quality tours for messenger UAV to rapidly visit all UGVs, which assists UGVs to achieve collaboration in large area. Extreme events can cause severe power system damage. Resilience-driven operation of networked microgrids (MGs) has been heavily studied in literature. There is, though, little research considering the influence of resilience on decision making for planning. In this paper, a three-level model is suggested to solve the optimal sizing problem of networked MGs considering both resilience and cost. In the first level, a meta-heuristic technique based on an adaptive genetic algorithm (AGA) is utilized to tackle the normal sizing problem, while a time-coupled AC OPF is utilized to capture stability properties for accurate decision-making. The second and third levels are combined as a defender-attacker-defender model. In the former, the suggested AGA is utilized to generate attacking plans capturing load profile uncertainty and contingencies for load shedding maximization, while a multi-objective optimization problem is suggested for the latter to obtain a trade-off between cost and resilience. Simulations considering meshed networks and load distinction into critical and non-critical are developed to demonstrate algorithm effectiveness on capturing resilience at the planning stage and optimally sizing multiple parameters. The results indicate that higher resilience levels lead to higher investment cost, while sizing networked MGs leads to decreased investment in comparison with standalone MGs sizing. Flexible DC distribution networks have been widely developed because of their advantages of high efficiency, low cost, and easy access to renewable energy. However, as distribution networks have more ends than the two-terminal transmission line, it is more challenging to protect them and locate their faults. Therefore, this paper proposes a modified T-source circuit breaker to protect against DC faults. Based on the proposed circuit breaker, an integral fault location method using double-terminal asynchronous data is proposed. The accuracy of the algorithm is not affected by the fault resistance. There are no differential terms in the algorithm, which greatly reduces the sensitivity to noise. The integral algorithm can remain steady when the voltage and current are zero in oscillation and attenuation periods. This constitutes the main contribution of this paper. Finally, it is verified by simulation and experiment that the proposed circuit breaker can isolate the power source within a short time in the typical DC distribution network. In this paper, we investigate the convergence speed of the Arimoto-Blahut algorithm. For many channel matrices, the convergence speed is exponential, but for some channel matrices it is slower than exponential. By analyzing the Taylor expansion of the defining function of the Arimoto-Blahut algorithm, we will make the conditions clear for the exponential or slower convergence. The analysis of the slow convergence in this paper is new. Based on this analysis, we will compare the convergence speeds of the Arimoto-Blahut algorithm numerically with the values obtained in our theorems for several channel matrices. The state-dependent Gaussian interference channel (IC) and Z-IC are investigated, in which two receivers are corrupted by the same but differently scaled states. The state sequence is noncausally known at both transmitters, but not known at either receiver. Three interference regimes are studied, i.e., the very strong, strong, and weak regimes. In the very strong regime, the capacity region is characterized under certain channel parameters by designing a cooperative dirty paper coding between the two transmitters to fully cancel the state. In the strong regime, points on the capacity region boundary are characterized under certain channel parameters by designing an achievable scheme based on rate splitting, layered dirty paper coding, and successive state cancellation. In the weak regime, the sum capacity is obtained by independent dirty paper coding at two transmitters. For all the above regimes, the capacity achieves that of the IC/Z-IC without state. Comparison between the state-dependent regular IC and the Z-IC suggests that even with one interference-free link, the Z-IC does not necessarily perform better, because dirty paper coded interference in the regular IC facilitates to cancel the state through the cooperative dirty paper coding between the transmitters. This paper derives the maximum achievable sum-rate and presents the optimal encoding/decoding framework for rate-diverse wireless network coding (RD-WNC) over broadband channels consisting of multiple parallel subchannels. RD-WNC applies to a communication scenario in which a base station wants to deliver two different messages with different rates to two users. The base station combines the two separate messages into one network-coded message and broadcasts the network-coded message to both users. Each user then extracts its desired message from the network-coded message by subtracting from it the other message, which we assume to be side information available to the user. Deriving the maximum achievable sum-rate for RD-WNC is challenging when the channel consists of multiple parallel subchannels with different channel coefficients (e.g., the subcarrier channels of OFDM systems), since apart from the rate allocation between the two users, optimal power allocation among multiple subchannels needs to be identified. The first contribution of this paper is a new “mountain-leveling” power allocation algorithm to achieve the maximum sum-rate. With the resulting power allocation, we can then achieve the corresponding optimal sum-rate by having a separate encoding/decoding mechanism for each subchannels, but doing so is cumbersome and complex when the number of subchannels is large. The second contribution of this paper is a practical encoding/decoding framework using only one encoder-decoder mechanism for all subchannels without sacrificing sum-rate optimality. The new generation of the high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) video coding standard has improved compression performance and brought considerable coding complexity. Therefore, reducing the perception redundancy of video to obtain a better compression effect is the new direction of video development at present. In this paper, the HEVC is improved and enhanced from the aspects of a video saliency algorithm based on an attention mechanism and a video compression algorithm based on perception priority. In terms of video saliency, this paper proposes a spatial saliency algorithm based on a convolutional neural network and a temporal saliency algorithm based on motion vector. The saliency algorithm can combine the motion estimation results of each block during the HEVC compression on the basis of convolutional neural network and carry out adaptive dynamic fusion of the two, to complete the saliency map of the input video. In the aspect of the video compression algorithm with perception priority, this paper proposes a more flexible QP selection method, which selects its corresponding QP according to the saliency value of CU. At the same time, we propose a new rate-distortion optimization algorithm, which integrates the current block’s saliency feature into the traditional rate-distortion calculation method, to guide the allocation of bits and achieve the purpose of perception priority. The experimental results proved the superiority of the proposed method over the state-of-the-art perceptual coding algorithms in terms of saliency detection and perceptual compression quality. This paper integrates an estimation of distribution (EoD)-based update operator into decomposition-based multiobjective evolutionary algorithms for binary optimization. The probabilistic model in the update operator is a probability vector, which is adaptively learned from historical information of each subproblem. We show that this update operator can significantly enhance decomposition-based algorithms on a number of benchmark problems. Moreover, we apply the enhanced algorithms to the constrained optimal software product selection (OSPS) problem in the field of search-based software engineering. For this real-world problem, we give its formal definition and then develop a new repair operator based on satisfiability solvers. It is demonstrated by the experimental results that the algorithms equipped with the EoD operator are effective in dealing with this practical problem, particularly for large-scale instances. The interdisciplinary studies in this paper provide a new real-world application scenario for constrained multiobjective binary optimizers and also offer valuable techniques for software engineers in handling the OSPS problem. Collaborative control of power converters operating in microgrids with unbalanced single-phase loads is difficult to achieve, considering that the voltages and currents have positive-, negative-, and zero-sequence components. In this paper, a new control scheme for collaborative control of four-leg microgrids is proposed. The main advantage of the proposed methodology is simplicity, because the sharing of the powers produced by the positive-, negative-, and zero-sequence voltage and currents is simple to achieve using the easy to implement and well-known droop control algorithms, i.e., as those based on $P$ – $\omega$ and $Q$ – $v$ droop control. The proposed droop algorithms do not require high bandwidth communication channels and the application of virtual impedances, whose design usually demands extensive simulation work, is not required. Three secondary control systems are also analyzed, discussed, and implemented in this paper to regulate the frequency, voltage, and phase at the point of common coupling (PCC), to achieve a balanced 50-Hz three-phase voltage supply in the PCC during steady-state operation. For these secondary control systems, single-phase phase-locked loop based on quadrature signal generators are implemented. Small signal modeling and design are discussed in this paper. This paper deals with stabilization of an ideal transformer model (ITM) circuit, used as an interfacing algorithm for hardware-in-the-loop simulations. The ITM allows for the distribution of simulation model computations over multiple processors or can be used in power hardware-in-the-loop simulations. When specific impedance conditions of the partitioned circuit are not met, this interfacing algorithm becomes unstable. This paper first presents a new theoretical approach for representing the ITM interfacing algorithm that is based on delay differential equations. With a stability analysis of the obtained time-delay system, a stabilization method is proposed, which increases the stability boundaries of the ITM algorithm. This paper presents a nonlinear dynamic simulation model of an ultracapacitor (UC) bank and the associated control system. The control system at hand consists of two levels: the lower level controls the inverter of the UC bank, while the upper control level is responsible for providing charging/discharging active power set points to be followed by the lower control level. This paper focuses on the development of the upper control level for frequency control. Specifically, two simulation case studies are developed so as to assess the performance of the proposed control framework. In the first case study the upper control level is developed using a classical Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller. In the second case study the upper control level is devised using a Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithm based on internal linear prediction model of a nonlinear UC bank. In both cases, a nonlinear UC bank simulation model is used. The simulation case studies are modelled and tested in Matlab/Simulink. The response of the MPC-controlled UC bank is compared to the 3 existing PID-control algorithms for frequency control. This paper proposes a novel inertia-enhanced distributed control method to complement the inertia of microgrids. The rate of change of frequency (RoCoF) and the rate of change of voltage (RoCoV) are employed in this paper to quantify the frequency inertia and voltage inertia, respectively. Then, a fully distributed algorithm with constrained changing rates is proposed. By bounding the changing rates of frequency and voltage during the consensus control, the algorithm can address the consensus problem while enhancing the inertia of microgrids. Compared with most inertia control methods, the proposed method can utilize the reserve power of scattered DGs to supply inertia. Besides, it performs better under disturbances and delays than conventional distributed control methods. This paper proposes on-driving experience sharing algorithms at junctions in infrastructure-assisted vehicles-to-everything networks. For the purpose, a millimeter-wave (mmWave) technology is used because it provides multi-Gbps data rates which is helpful for handling users’ short stay times at junctions and spatial reuse due to high beam directionality which is helpful for interference-avoidance among densely deployed vehicles at junctions. To realize on-driving experience sharing, the proposed algorithms focus on joint resource allocation and scheduling for 3GPP-compliant multiple unicast vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications where the vehicles are group leaders (GLs) in 3GPP Mode 4(d). The resource allocation stands for the roadside unit (RSU) allocation to scheduled V2V GL links where RSU is essentially required for overcoming blockage by establishing two-hop relaying. Because vehicles stay for short times at junctions, this paper designs two algorithms without or with delay considerations. Without delay considerations, the joint optimization of RSU allocation and scheduling was originally formulated as mixed 0-1 non-convex optimization. However our proposed algorithm reformulates the problem into mixed 0-1 convex optimization, which is computationally easier to solve. With delay considerations, our proposed algorithm dynamically controls video contents frame rates for time-average on-driving video sharing quality maximization subject to delay constraints, inspired by Lyapunov optimization. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that our algorithms can significantly outperform in a variety of scenarios. Energy management strategy (EMS) is the key to the performance of fuel cell / battery hybrid system. At present, reinforcement learning (RL) has been introduced into this field and has gradually become the focus of research. However, traditional EMSs only take the energy consumption into consideration when optimizing the operation economy, and ignore the cost caused by power source degradations. It would cause the problem of poor operation economy regarding Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). On the other hand, most studied RL algorithms have the disadvantages of overestimation and improper way of restricting battery SOC, which would lead to relatively poor control performance as well. To solve these problems, this paper establishes a TCO model including energy consumption, equivalent energy consumption and degradation of power sources at first, then adopt the Double Q-learning RL algorithm with state constraint and variable action space to determine the optimal EMS. Finally, using hardware-in-the-loop platform, the feasibility, superiority and generalization of proposed EMS is proved by comparing with the optimal dynamic programming and traditional RL EMS and equivalent consumption minimum strategy (ECMS) under both training and unknown operating conditions. Periodicity is a frequently happening phenomenon for social interactions in temporal networks. Mining periodic communities are essential to understanding periodic group behaviors in temporal networks. Unfortunately, most previous studies for community mining in temporal networks ignore the periodic patterns of communities. In this paper, we study the problem of seeking periodic communities in a temporal network, where each edge is associated with a set of timestamps. We propose novel models, including $\sigma$ σ -periodic $k$ k -core and $\sigma$ σ -periodic $k$ k -clique, that represent periodic communities in temporal networks. Specifically, a $\sigma$ σ -periodic $k$ k -core (or $\sigma$ σ -periodic $k$ k -clique) is a $k$ k -core (or clique with size larger than $k$ k ) that appears at least $\sigma$ σ times periodically in the temporal graph. The problem of searching periodic core is efficient but the resulting communities may be not enough cohesive; the problem of enumerating all periodic cliques is not efficient (NP-hard) but the resulting communities are very cohesive. To compute all of them efficiently, we first develop two effective graph reduction techniques to significantly prune the temporal graph. Then, we transform the temporal graph into a static graph and prove that mining the periodic communities in the temporal graph equals mining communities in the transformed graph. Subsequently, we propose a decomposition algorithm to search maximal $\sigma$ σ -periodic $k$ k -core, a Bron-Kerbosch style algorithm to enumerate all maximal $\sigma$ σ -periodic $k$ k -cliques, and a branch-and-bound style algorithm to find the maximum $\sigma$ σ -periodic clique. In an interesting paper, Prof. C. Ding provided three constructions of cyclic codes of length being a product of two primes. Numerical data shows that many codes from these constructions are best cyclic codes of the same length and dimension over the same finite field. However, not much is known about these codes. In this paper, we explain some of the numerical data by developing a general method on cyclic codes of composite length and on estimating the minimum distance. We also provide a general construction of cyclic codes of composite length which are related to Ding’s constructions. Numerical data shows that it produces many best cyclic codes as well. List decoding of insertions and deletions in the Levenshtein metric is considered. The Levenshtein distance between two sequences is the minimum number of insertions and deletions needed to turn one of the sequences into the other. In this paper, a Johnson-like upper bound on the maximum list size when list decoding in the Levenshtein metric is derived. This bound depends only on the length and minimum Levenshtein distance of the code, the length of the received word, and the alphabet size. It shows that polynomial-time list decoding beyond half the Levenshtein distance is possible for many parameters. Further, we also prove a lower bound on list decoding of deletions with the well-known binary Varshamov–Tenengolts codes, which shows that the maximum list size grows exponentially with the number of deletions. Finally, an efficient list decoding algorithm for two insertions/deletions with VT codes is given. In this paper, we consider the problem of learning undirected graphical models from data generated according to the Glauber dynamics (also known as the Gibbs sampler). The Glauber dynamics is a Markov chain that sequentially updates individual nodes (variables) in a graphical model and it is frequently used to sample from the stationary distribution (to which it converges given sufficient time). Additionally, the Glauber dynamics is a natural dynamical model in a variety of settings. This paper deviates from the standard formulation of graphical model learning in the literature, where one assumes access to independent identically distributed samples from the distribution. Much of the research on graphical model learning has been directed toward finding algorithms with low computational cost. As the main result of this paper, we establish that the problem of reconstructing binary pairwise graphical models is computationally tractable when we observe the Glauber dynamics. Specifically, we show that a binary pairwise graphical model on p nodes with maximum degree d can be learned in time f(d)p^2\log p , for a function f(d) defined explicitly in this paper, using nearly the information-theoretic minimum number of samples. This paper addresses the estimation and compensation of I/Q imbalance, one of the most prominent impairments found in wideband zero-intermediate frequency transceivers (TRxs). The I/Q imbalance encountered in this kind of TRx comprises not only frequency-selective gain and phase imbalance but also delay imbalance. Unless appropriate compensation is applied, the I/Q imbalance significantly degrades the performance of a communication system. This paper presents a novel compensation technique for transmitter I/Q imbalance based on built-in-self-calibration, a low cost and robust compensation technique that enables manufacturing as well as in-field calibration with low computational complexity. The method’s performance is evaluated in a TRx with 64-quadratic-amplitude modulation and 2 GHz of bandwidth implemented with real hardware. Unavoidably, the controlsystem of any permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is subjected to perturbations, e.g., motor nonidealities and inverter nonlinearities. To reject these perturbations, a new super-twisting (ST) control variant, called speed adaptive super-twisting (S-AST) control, is proposed in this paper. In the S-AST control, a proportional-integral (PI) and a ST controllers are merged using an adaptive law that is based on the motor speed measurement. This is done to reduce the chattering problems that the standard ST control presents. In addition, a mathematical design for the S-AST control is proposed, where the relationship between the chattering amplitude, the switching frequency and the system perturbations is shown. The main contribution in this paper is the application of the S-AST controller to reduce the total harmonic distortion (THDi) of the PMSM currents. By comparing the S-AST control against PI control, the THDi is reduced from 9.9% to 1.27%, in simulation, and the THDi is reduced from 22.79% to 1.56%, experimentally. As an algorithmic framework, message passing is extremely powerful and has wide applications in the context of different disciplines including communications, coding theory, statistics, signal processing, artificial intelligence and combinatorial optimization. In this paper, we investigate the performance of a message-passing algorithm called min-sum belief propagation (BP) for the vertex-disjoint shortest $k$ -path problem ($k$ -VDSP) on weighted directed graphs, and derive the iterative message-passing update rules. As the main result of this paper, we prove that for a weighted directed graph $G$ of order $n$ , BP algorithm converges to the unique optimal solution of $k$ -VDSP on $G$ within $O(n^{2}w_{max})$ iterations, provided that the weight $w_{e}$ is nonnegative integral for each arc $e\in E(G)$ , where $w_{max}=\max \{w_{e}: e\in E(G)\}$. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first instance where BP algorithm is proved correct for NP-hard problems. Non-uniform constellation (NUC) is an advanced technology in digital terrestrial television broadcasting (DTTB) systems to reduce the shapping gap of BICM capacity to Shannon theoretical limit and provide performance gain. Two-dimensional NUC (2D-NUC) is a kind of NUC providing more gain but bringing higher demapping complexity at the receiver, which hinders its application prospects, especially in power limited systems. This paper proposes three novel demapping algorithms with reduced complexity for low to medium code rate 2D-NUCs in Advanced Television Systems Committee 3rd Generation (ATSC 3.0) standard. The proposed algorithms are based on the introduction of virtual points, the strategy of condensed symbols reduction and some reasonable approximations. There is a trade-off between the demapping complexity and performance. These three algorithms have different degrees of reduction in complexity and performance degradation, so they accommodate for different practical requirements. In this paper, we consider the development of algorithms for the automatic detection of buried threats using ground penetrating radar (GPR) measurements. GPR is one of the most studied and successful modalities for automatic buried threat detection (BTD), and a large variety of BTD algorithms have been proposed for it. Despite this, large-scale comparisons of GPR-based BTD algorithms are rare in the literature. In this paper, we report the results of a multi-institutional effort to develop advanced BTD algorithms for a real-world GPR BTD system. The effort involved five institutions with substantial experience with the development of GPR-based BTD algorithms. In this paper, we report the technical details of the advanced algorithms submitted by each institution, representing their latest technical advances, and many state-of-the-art GPR-based BTD algorithms. We also report the results of evaluating the algorithms from each institution on the large experimental data set used for development. The experimental data set comprised 120 000 m2 of GPR data using surface area, from 13 different lanes across two U.S. test sites. The data were collected using a vehicle-mounted GPR system, the variants of which have supplied data for numerous publications. Using these results, we identify the most successful and common processing strategies among the submitted algorithms, and make recommendations for GPR-based BTD algorithm design. This paper examines the problem of predictive gear scheduling for fuel consumption minimization in connected/automated heavy trucks. The literature highlights the fuel economy benefits of such predictive scheduling, but there is a need to optimize such scheduling online, in real time. To address this need, we begin by using dynamic programming (DP) to schedule gear shifting offline, in a manner that achieves a globally optimal Pareto tradeoff between the conflicting objectives of minimizing fuel consumption and shift frequency. The computational cost of DP is unfavorable for online implementation, but we present two algorithms addressing this challenge. Both algorithms rely on the fact that in the Pareto limit where fuel consumption minimization is the sole objective, DP furnishes a simple static shift map. Our first algorithm trains a recurrent neural network to prune the shift schedule generated by this map. The second algorithm performs this pruning in a direct manner tailored to reduce the schedule's rain flow count. We simulate these algorithms for different drive cycles. Both algorithms achieve a reasonable tradeoff between fuel consumption and gear shift frequency. However, the rain flow count algorithm is both more effective in approaching the DP-based Pareto front and more computationally efficient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents two main contributions toward efficient very large scale integration circuits mapped with simple cells: 1) a complete synthesis flow to provide good-quality circuits mapped only with simple cells; and 2) an area-oriented, level-aware buffering algorithm based on inverter trees to fix cell fanout violations. An effective pattern-based algorithm to identify XORs/XNORs on and-inverter graphs is also presented. We show that efficient implementations in terms of inverter count, transistor count, area, power, and delay can be generated from circuits with a reduced number of both simple cells and inverters, combined with XOR/XNOR-based optimizations. The proposed buffering algorithm can handle all unfeasible fanout occurrences, while: 1) optimizing the number of added inverters and 2) assigning cells to the inverter tree based on their level criticality. When comparing with academic and commercial approaches, we are able to simultaneously reduce the average number of inverters, transistors, area, power dissipation, and delay up to 48%, 4%, 8%, 14%, and 16%, respectively. Linear spectral unmixing is the practice of decomposing the mixed pixel into a linear combination of the constituent endmembers and the estimated abundances. This paper focuses on unsupervised spectral unmixing where the endmembers are unknown a priori. Conventional approaches use either geometrical- or statistical-based approaches. In this paper, we address the challenges of spectral unmixing with unsupervised deep learning models, in specific, the autoencoder models, where the decoder serves as the endmembers and the hidden layer output serves as the abundances. In several recent attempts, part-based autoencoders have been designed to solve the unsupervised spectral unmixing problem. However, the performance has not been satisfactory. In this paper, we first discuss some important findings we make on issues with part-based autoencoders. By proof of counterexample, we show that all existing part-based autoencoder networks with nonnegative and tied encoder and decoder are inherently defective by making these inappropriate assumptions on the network structure. As a result, they are not suitable for solving the spectral unmixing problem. We propose a so-called untied denoising autoencoder with sparsity, in which the encoder and decoder of the network are independent, and only the decoder of the network is enforced to be nonnegative. Furthermore, we make two critical additions to the network design. First, since denoising is an essential step for spectral unmixing, we propose to incorporate the denoising capacity into the network optimization in the format of a denoising constraint rather than cascading another denoising preprocessor in order to avoid the introduction of additional reconstruction error. Second, to be more robust to the inaccurate estimation of a number of endmembers, we adopt an $l_{21}$ -norm on the encoder of the network to reduce the redundant endmembers while decreasing the reconstruction error simultaneously. To advance the utility of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar observations for extracting biophysical information about vegetation canopies, it is important to develop good understanding of the scattering mechanisms that give rise to the polarimetric scattering response and to apply it toward the development of effective decomposition models of the polarimetric covariance matrices. In this paper, we introduce a more rigorous approach to characterizing the volume scattering component of the three-component scattering model developed by Freeman and Durden. The improved rigor has two aspects: 1) the use of a T-matrix model for computing the polarimetric scattering by an inclined dielectric cylinder and 2) the incorporation of the change in local incidence angle as a function of the orientation of the vegetation cylinders. The improvements address some of the current limitations of the Freeman–Durden model. This paper also provides a sensitivity analysis of the various components of the covariance matrix as a function of several physical parameters including cylinder size, its dielectric constant, and the orientation distribution of cylinders. This paper investigates the dynamic access point (AP) clustering and precoding problem in the downlink of user-centric virtual cell networks. The goal is to maximize the weighted sum spectral efficiency (SE) while satisfying the power constraints and AP clustering constraints in adjacent time slots (TSs). By adopting the random walk mobility to model the mobile user equipments’ movement behaviors, we consider dynamic and time-varying channel conditions. Therefore, the weighted sum SE maximization programming takes the form of discrete-time sequence of mixed-integer non-convex optimization problems. In this paper, we propose to solve this sequential problem in two stages. In the first stage, a dynamic AP clustering approach based on discrete particle swarm optimization is developed. This approach takes the advantage of the channel correlation by exploiting the relationship between AP clustering solutions in adjacent TSs to improve the SE performance and reduce complexity. In the second stage, given the AP clustering solution obtained in the first stage, a distributed precoding algorithm is devised via applying the weighted minimum mean square error method. By combining these two stages, we propose a novel dynamic AP clustering and precoding algorithm (DAPC-Pre). The effectiveness of the proposed DAPC-Pre algorithm is verified by the simulation results. An improved and extended version of a quaternion-based lossless encryption technique for digital image and communication on medicine (DICOM) images is proposed. We highlight and address several security flaws present in the previous version of the algorithm originally proposed by Dzwonkowski et al. (2015). The newly proposed secure quaternion Feistel cipher (S-QFC) algorithm retains the concept of a modified Feistel network with modular arithmetic and the use of special properties of quaternions to perform rotations of data sequences in 3D space for each of the cipher rounds. A new and more secure key generation scheme based on quaternion Julia sets is utilized. We also introduce both-sided modular matrix multiplications for the encryption and decryption processes. The proposed S-QFC algorithm eliminates the major security flaws of its predecessor while maintaining high computation speed in comparison to other algorithms originally embedded in DICOM (i.e., advanced encryption standard and triple data encryption standard). In many different applications, it is important to determine the Hilbert transform of a given function. However, it is generally impossible to calculate it in closed form. Therefore Hilbert transform approximations are used. This paper studies the convergence and divergence behavior of general classes of such approximation methods. These classes are characterized by two very natural axioms and they include basically all known traditional numerical algorithms. The convergence of these methods is investigated on a family of signal spaces of continuous functions with finite energy. These spaces are parametrized by a number which measures the energy concentration in the low frequency components of the signal. It is shown that stable methods only exist on signal spaces with a sufficient energy concentration and this paper gives some explicit examples of convergent methods. On all other spaces in the family of signal spaces, every sampling-based Hilbert transform approximation shows a blowup behavior of its peak value, i.e., on these spaces, every sampling-based Hilbert transform approximation diverges. Bar-plate configuration has a vital function in the intensive study of corona discharge mechanism. To study the discharge characteristics of the steady current stage in this configuration, this paper proposes a hybrid numerical algorithm composed by the finite-element method and the finite-volume method. The former solves Poisson’s equation and calculates the value of onset field intensity. The latter solves the current continuity equation, in which a time-varying charge item is added. This charge item can increase the stability of the hybrid algorithm. This paper also proposes a new selection strategy for the initial charge and inception voltage on the bar electrode surface. Based on this algorithm, corona current under different electrode radii, gap distances, and applied voltages was calculated. In this way, the distribution characteristics of an electric field intensity and space charge density along the whole gap in the model can be obtained through the experiment. To verify the validity of the algorithm, the related experiment is carried out in the laboratory. The aim of this paper is to investigate the sensorless voltage control schemes for the promising wound-rotor brushless doubly-fed induction generator (BDFIG) in both the stand-alone and grid-connected systems. For sensorless target, a new rotor position observer using the space vector flux relations of BDFIG is suggested. The proposed sensorless algorithm does not require any additional observers for obtaining the generator speed by directly detecting the rotor position, which may reduce the cost of the overall control system. For the voltage control purpose, a direct voltage control (DVC) scheme is applied for the stand-alone systems. However, this control strategy did not handle the control of the generated-voltage phase angle and also did not consider the phase sequence issue which are very essential provisions for the smooth connection target in grid-connected applications. Hence, DVC strategy cannot guarantee all the intended provisions for a soft and smooth connection process with the grid side and therefore, an effective grid-synchronization algorithm is proposed. A comprehensive analysis to confirm the functionality of the proposed control strategies is discussed through both simulation and experimental results. The presented study in this paper verifies the efficacy of the proposed schemes for sensorless voltage control target of BDFIG in both the stand-alone and grid-connected applications with a good transient behavior. The analysis of subtle deviations between different versions of historical prints has been a long-standing challenge in art history research. So far, this challenge has required extensive domain knowledge, fine-tuned expert perception, and time-consuming manual labor. In this paper we introduce an explorative visual approach to facilitate fast and accurate support for the task of comparing differences between prints such as engravings and woodcuts. To this end, we have developed a customized algorithm that detects similar stroke-patterns in prints and matches them in order to allow visual alignment and automated deviation highlighting. Our visual analytics system enables art history researchers to quickly detect, document, and categorize qualitative and quantitative discrepancies, and to analyze these discrepancies using comprehensive interactions. To evaluate our approach, we conducted a user study involving both experts on historical prints and laypeople. Using our new interactive technique, our subjects found about 20 percent more differences compared to regular image viewing software as well as “paper-based” comparison. Moreover, the laypeople found the same differences as the experts when they used our system, which was not the case for conventional methods. Network partition in complex power networks is essential for the var-voltage control. Traditional partition methods such as Ward method are applied in practical power networks, but they are unable to evaluate the quality of partition results. Moreover, they lack efficiency when dealing with large-scale networks. Since complex operation characteristics and topology have emerged in recent power systems, the power grid partition requires higher efficiency and quality. Therefore, this paper proposes a fast network partition method with a balanced-depth-based community detection algorithm. Its aim is to significantly improve the efficiency of partition while maintaining high quality of partition, with which the inter-zone coupling is minimized while the intra-zone coupling is maximized. In the meantime, a surrogate-optimization-based selection algorithm is proposed to select the zonal pilot bus, based on which the secondary voltage control method is used to evaluate the quality of partition. Results from four case studies conducted in various power networks with different sizes, as compared to other partition methods, validate the high efficiency and high quality of the proposed power grid partition approach. Many big data applications produce a massive amount of high-dimensional, real-time, and evolving streaming data. Clustering such data streams with both effectiveness and efficiency are critical for these applications. Although there are well-known data stream clustering algorithms that are based on the popular online-offline framework, these algorithms still face some major challenges. Several critical questions are still not answer satisfactorily: How to perform dimensionality reduction effectively and efficiently in the online dynamic environment? How to enable the clustering algorithm to achieve complete real-time online processing? How to make algorithm parameters learn in a self-supervised or self-adaptive manner to cope with high-speed evolving streams? In this paper, we focus on tackling these challenges by proposing a fully online data stream clustering algorithm (called ESA-Stream) that can learn parameters online dynamically in a self-adaptive manner, speedup dimensionality reduction, and cluster data streams effectively and efficiently in an online and dynamic environment. Experiments on a wide range of synthetic and real-world data streams show that ESA-Stream outperforms state-of-the-art baselines considerably in both effectiveness and efficiency. In this paper, the effects of motion blur on 2-D digital image correlation (DIC) measurements are discussed, with a particular focus on the description of displacement measurement uncertainty. The research started with the simulation of motion blur with a suitable literature-based algorithm. Then the state of the art of uncertainty analysis in the context of DIC was compared with simulation results, and it was found that the effects of motion blur on uncertainty are not predicted correctly by the literature models. This phenomenon is explained by the fact that the literature models do not consider motion blur. Consequently, a simple monodimensional case is analyzed. In this way, it has been possible to evaluate the sensitivity of DIC correlation function [evaluated as the sum of squared differences (SSD)] to motion blur. Using these results, it is possible to extend the analysis to the case of a generic image with the help of a power-law model. The operation of variable-speed ac drives with loss-minimizing flux strategies can produce important energy savings without the need of any investment. This paper proposes algorithms for the evaluation of loss motor components and the flux level that produces the minimum-loss operating condition, covering the whole constant-torque operating region. Both scalar and vector drives are considered, although it is found that the operation of scalar- and vector-controlled drives with optimum flux (or $d$ -axis current) gives very similar results for the same operating points. Evaluation is done using four induction motors of 4, 11, 55, and 110 kW. Results confirm that important savings can be achieved, especially in applications where motors operate with high speed and low to moderate load torque. In this paper, a means of generating residuals based on a fault isolation observer (FIO) and evaluating them using a support vector machine (SVM) is proposed. The proposed FIO generates the isolated residual signals and they shows robust performance regardless of unknown road surface conditions. This FIO is designed using a linear time-invariant quarter-car model. While quarter-car models have the form of a bilinear system, in this study the authors convert this bilinear model to a linear model with model uncertainty based on the assumption that the control input is limited. Therefore, the proposed FIO can be used regardless of the type of damper or controller. Furthermore, the SVM based residual evaluator without empirically set thresholds is used to evaluate the generated residuals. The proposed fault diagnosis algorithm is expected to reduce the effort required in the design procedure and it can also detect a small amount of sensor fault that cannot be detected by traditional limit-checking method. The proposed fault diagnosis algorithm is verified using low cost production accelerometers and a quarter-car test rig. Consequently, the fault diagnosis algorithm proposed in this paper can detect the faults of a sprung mass accelerometer and an unsprung mass accelerometer independently, and this algorithm can reduce the effort required in designing the diagnosis algorithm greatly.
