Information visualization appears to be a promising technique for improving the business practices in today's electric power industry. The legacy power system visualization tools, however, restrict the visualization process to follow a limited number of pre-defined patterns created by human designers, thus hindering users' ability to discover. This paper proposes a data-driven approach to interactive visualization of power systems. The proposed approach relies on developing powerful data manipulation algorithms to create visualizations based on the characteristics of empirically or mathematically derived data. Based on this approach, a data-driven model exploratory tool has been developed to enable users to visualize the power system's physical/electrical configurations at various levels and from different perspectives. The conducted case studies have demonstrated that the data-driven approach could result in an interactive and user-driven power system visualization tool that fosters scientific understanding and insight, therefore unleashing the power of visualization. Adversarial attacks have been extensively studied in recent years since they can identify the vulnerability of deep learning models before deployed. In this paper, we consider the black-box adversarial setting, where the adversary needs to craft adversarial examples without access to the gradients of a target model. Previous methods attempted to approximate the true gradient either by using the transfer gradient of a surrogate white-box model or based on the feedback of model queries. However, the existing methods inevitably suffer from low attack success rates or poor query efficiency since it is difficult to estimate the gradient in a high-dimensional input space with limited information. To address these problems and improve black-box attacks, we propose two prior-guided random gradient-free (PRGF) algorithms based on biased sampling and gradient averaging, respectively. Our methods can take the advantage of a transfer-based prior given by the gradient of a surrogate model and the query information simultaneously. Through theoretical analyses, the transfer-based prior is appropriately integrated with model queries by an optimal coefficient in each method. Extensive experiments demonstrate that, in comparison with the alternative state-of-the-arts, both of our methods require much fewer queries to attack black-box models with higher success rates. Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) is a popular tool for analyzing discrete count data such as text and images, which are required to model datasets and a large number of topics, e.g., tens of thousands of topics for industry scale applications. Although distributed CPU systems have been used to address this problem, they are slow and resource inefficient. GPU-based systems have emerged as a promising alternative because of their high computational power and memory bandwidth. However, existing GPU-based LDA systems can only learn thousands of topics, because they use dense data structures, and have linear time complexity to the number of topics. In this article, we propose SaberLDA, a GPU-based LDA system that implements a sparsity-aware algorithm to achieve sublinear time complexity to learn a large number of topics. To address the challenges introduced by sparsity, we propose a novel data layout, a warp-based sampling kernel, an efficient sparse matrix counting method, and a fine-grained load balancing strategy. SaberLDA achieves linear speedup on 4 GPUs and is 6–10 times faster than existing GPU systems in thousands of topics. The affinity propagation (AP) clustering algorithm has received much attention in the past few years. AP is appealing because it is efficient, insensitive to initialization, and it produces clusters at a lower error rate than other exemplar-based methods. However, its single-exemplar model becomes inadequate when applied to model multisubclasses in some situations such as scene analysis and character recognition. To remedy this deficiency, we have extended the single-exemplar model to a multi-exemplar one to create a new multi-exemplar affinity propagation (MEAP) algorithm. This new model automatically determines the number of exemplars in each cluster associated with a super exemplar to approximate the subclasses in the category. Solving the model is NP--hard and we tackle it with the max-sum belief propagation to produce neighborhood maximum clusters, with no need to specify beforehand the number of clusters, multi-exemplars, and superexemplars. Also, utilizing the sparsity in the data, we are able to reduce substantially the computational time and storage. Experimental studies have shown MEAP's significant improvements over other algorithms on unsupervised image categorization and the clustering of handwritten digits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
