This letter presents two results for multiuser wireless systems employing dirty-paper coding strategies along with greedy scheduling over the broadcast multiple-input multiple-output channel. Specifically, an efficient and suboptimal downlink scheduler is proposed to approximate the maximum sum rate using equal power allocation, and it is shown to approach the maximum sum rate of optimal power allocation for a large number of users under optimal scheduling. This paper proposes an encoding/decoding framework for achieving the optimal channel capacities of the two-user broadcast channel where each user (receiver) has the message targeted for the other user (receiver) as side information. Since the link qualities of the channels from the base station to the two users are different, their respective single-user non-broadcast channel capacities are also different. A goal is to simultaneously achieve/approach the single-user non-broadcast channel capacities of the two users with a single broadcast transmission by applying network coding. This is referred to as the rate-diverse wireless network coding problem. For this problem, this paper presents a capacity-achieving framework based on linear-structured nested lattice codes. The significance of the proposed framework, besides its theoretical optimality, is that it suggests a general design principle for linear rate-diverse wireless network coding going beyond the use of lattice codes. We refer to this design principle as the principle of virtual single-user channels. Guided by this design principle, we propose two implementations of our encoding/decoding framework using practical linear codes amenable to decoding with affordable complexities: the first implementation is based on Low Density Lattice Codes (LDLC) and the second implementation is based on Bit-interleaved Coded Modulation (BICM). As a class of high-performance forward error correction codes, turbo codes, which can approach the channel capacity, could become a candidate of the coding methods in future terrestrial broadcasting (TB) systems. Among all the demands of future TB system, high throughput and low latency are two basic requirements that need to be met. Parallel turbo decoding is a very effective method to reduce the latency and improve the throughput in the decoding stage. In this paper, a parallel turbo decoder is designed and implemented in field-programmable gate array (FPGA). A reverse address generator is proposed to reduce the complexity of interleaver and also the iteration time. A practical method of modulo operation is realized in FPGA which can save computing resources compared with using division operation. The latency of parallel turbo decoder after implementation can be as low as 23.2 us at a clock rate of 250 MHz and the throughput can reach up to 6.92 Gbps. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard enhances Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services (MBMS) to provide highly efficient transmission of multicast/broadcast services. This paper aims at clarifying which is the best option for the Enhanced MBMS (E-MBMS) network configuration according to the operator needs. Besides, it describes the main technical features of the new E-MBMS LTE standard, for both streaming and file delivery, and derives optimum operation modes. Some relevant conclusions are drawn from a set of simulation results calibrated with International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication (ITU-R) guidelines. Regarding streaming delivery, results show that increasing the MBMS over a Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) area size allows employing a higher modulation and coding scheme level, which entails more streaming channels per MBSFN area. Concerning file delivery, results show that the reduction in the mean throughput of unicast users matches exactly the percentage of stolen subframes. This paper proposes an architecture for using multiple-input multiple-output techniques for a multimode fiber broadcast channel, allowing simultaneous transmission of unique streams to different users on the same fiber while using square-last detection. This paper describes a channel estimation algorithm for the advanced terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB) transmission system which is fully backward compatible with the conventional T-DMB standard. The advanced T-DMB has enhanced features which provide higher transmission data rate for increasing program channel capacity and better multimedia A/V service quality than the conventional T-DMB system by adopting a hierarchical modulation and scalable audio/video CODEC. To support the higher data rate transmission for the advanced T-DMB, high performance channel estimation and equalization techniques should be adopted into the advanced T-DMB receivers. The requirements for future DVB-TIH networks demand that broadcasters design and deploy networks that provide ubiquitous reception in challenging indoors and other obstructed situations. It is essential that such networks are designed cost-effectively and with minimized environmental impact. The EC funded project PLUTO has since its start in 2006 explored the use of diversity to improve coverage in these difficult situations. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the performance of Transmit Delay Diversity (DD) with two antennas to improve the reception of DVB-TIH systems operating in different realistic propagation conditions through a series of tests using a SPIRENT SR5500 dual channel emulator. The relationship between correlation coefficient between channels, receiver velocity and diversity gain is investigated. It is shown that transmit delay diversity significantly improves the quality of reception particularly in simulated fast fading mobile broadcasting applications. In this paper, an efficient design of dual mode deinterleaver for both IEEE 802.16 and digital video broadcasting (DVB) standards is presented. The paper first proposes a systematic data allocation method for the design of matrix transposer which can be used to realize the block deinterleaver adopted by IEEE 802.16 based on the multi- bank memory architecture. In addition, multiple input/output data can be grouped together in order to further reduce the memory access frequency such that the required number of banks and ports for the memory can be both reduced. Similarly, the multi-bank memory design approach can also be applied for the byte-level convolutional deinterleaver adopted in DVB system by realizing the multiple delay branches as the circular buffer. Finally, these two different deinterleaving standards can be further integrated . into a single design suitable for those dual-mode communication systems. Our implementation results show that the dual mode deinterleaver can run up to 150 Mhz, and consume about 38.5k gates. The same design methodology can also be applied for the design of interleavers. The objective of this work is to research and analyse the performance of Cyclic Delay Diversity (CDD) with two transmit antenna on DVB-H systems operating in spatially correlated channel. It is shown in this paper that CDD can achieve desirable transmit diversity gain over uncorrelated channel with or without receiver diversity. However, in reality, the respective signal paths between spatially separated antennas and the mobile receiver is likely to be correlated because of insufficient antenna separation at the transmitter and the lack of scattering effect of the channel. Under this spatially correlated channel, it is apparent that CDD cannot achieve the same diversity gain as obtained under the uncorrelated channel. In this paper, a new upper bound on the pairwise error probability (PEP) of the CDD with spatial correlation of two transmit antennas is derived. The upper bound is used to study the CDD theoretical error performance and diversity gain losses over a generalized spatially correlated Rayleigh channel. This theoretical analysis is validated by the simulation of DVB-H systems with two transmit antennas and the CDD scheme. This paper considers the potential for an HDTV delivery format with 1920 x 1080 pixels progressive scanning and 50 frames per second in broadcast applications. The paper discusses the difficulties in characterizing the display to be assumed for reception. It elaborates on the required bit rate of the 1080p/50 format when critical content is coded in MPEG-4 H.264 AVC Part 10 and subjectively viewed on a large, flat panel display with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution. The paper describes the initial subjective quality evaluations that have been made in these conditions. The results of these initial tests suggest that the required bit-rate for a 1080p/50 HDTV signal in emission could be kept equal or lower than that of 2nd generation HDTV formats, to achieve equal or better image quality. This paper proposes a DSM-CC carousel caching and management architecture that can support both priority-based scheduling of monitoring threads and caching of carousel objects for a quick launch and download of Xlet. The carousel objects are broadcast cyclically by the transmission policy. Lack of carousel object reception may cause performance deterioration. The data broadcasting middleware should guarantee real-time characteristics such as the processing time in periodic monitoring threads to detect a change in information without a long latency time. Therefore this proposed architecture can improve the predictability of periodic monitoring section filter threads by using the managing the thread pool and scheduling periodic threads. To guarantee fast launch of the data broadcasting application, this paper also proposes the cache control mechanism of DSM-CC data/object carousel. Broadcasting is a prospective approach to support near video-on-demand services with light communication overhead. By letting clients share channels, such approaches involve partitioning a video into segments and repeatedly broadcasting these segments in multiple channels. An early paper proposed a broadcasting scheme called RFS (recursive frequency splitting), which can significantly reduce clients' waiting time. While efficient, RFS suffers from a high computational complexity of O(n log n), where n is the number of segments of the video, which is typically very large. This paper proposes an efficient segmentation scheme, which can significantly reduce the computational overhead by slightly sacrificing the number of segments that can be arranged as compared to RFS. This paper presents a new design and implementation method of distributed translator (DTxR), termed the equalization DTxR (EDTxR), for distributed translator network in ATSC systems. EDTxR has a simple structure and does not require any devices to be added to studio or transmitter facilities already deployed. EDTxRs which retransmit the same transmitter signal can have identical output symbol streams among them without additional synchronization information by utilizing the structure of the equalization digital on-channel repeater (EDOCR). Moreover, they can synchronize output frequency among them without global positioning system (GPS) clock receivers by adopting a crystal oscillator for each translator and compensating the frequency offset of the each crystal oscillator through the carrier and timing recovery. To verify the proposed method, multiple EDTxRs are implemented and tested in the laboratory and in the field. Through the tests, it is confirmed that EDTxR is a simple and economic distributed translator for distributed transmission system which does not need additional synchronization devices. This paper aims to improve the throughput of a broadcasting system that supports the transmission of multiple services with differentiated minimum signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) required for successful receptions simultaneously. We propose a novel multiplexing method called bit division multiplexing (BDM), which outperforms the conventional time division multiplexing (TDM) counterpart by extending the multiplexing from symbol level to bit level. Benefiting from multiple error protection levels of bits within each high-order constellation symbol, BDM can provide so-called nonlinear allocation of the channel resources. Both average mutual information (AMI) analysis and simulation results demonstrate that, compared with TDM, BDM can significantly improve the overall transmission rate of multiple services subject to the differentiated minimum SNRs required for successful receptions, or decrease the minimum SNRs required for successful receptions subject to the transmission rate requirements of multiple services. This paper proposes a generalized sequential slotted amplify and forward (GSSAF) strategy for single-antenna wireless cooperative networks. The diversity and multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) is analyzed. Applications to cooperative multiple relay channels, cooperative broadcast channels (CBC) and cooperative multiple access channels are considered and the DMT upper bound is proven to be achievable for each case. Other than proposing the best known near-optimal strategy for CBC, another important contribution is to show that GSSAF can be used as a unified strategy to achieve DMT optimality in wireless cooperative networks with unit multiplexing gains. In time-domain synchronous (TDS) block transmission systems, known symbols are padded in the guard interval between data blocks using some specific patterns. The complexity of channel estimation is relatively high for the time domain synchronous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TDS-OFDM) system. As a result, original TDS-OFDM is only used for downlink broadcasting. This paper proposes a new frame structure based on TDS block transmission. The proposed frame structure can simplify the channel estimation and support the multiuser scenarios, due to the proposed padding sequence and its specific time and frequency allocation pattern. It supports the variable number of frames in one superframe, which provides the flexibility to combat various channel conditions and maintains the system efficiency. Because of these characters, it can be used in wireless uplink channel as an alternative orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) structure. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed frame structure is almost the same as the conventional OFDMA scheme, but has better spectrum efficiency. Broadcast is a fundamental operation of wireless ad hoc networks (WANETs) and has widely been studied over the past few decades. However, most existing broadcasting strategies assume nonsleeping wireless nodes and thus are not suitable for uncoordinated duty-cycled WANETs, in which each node periodically switches on and off to save energy. In this paper, we study the minimum-transmission broadcast problem in uncoordinated duty-cycled WANETs (MTB-UD problem) and prove its NP-hardness. We show that modifications of existing broadcast approaches can only provide a linear approximation ratio of O(n) (where n is the number of nodes in the network). We propose a novel set-cover-based approximation (SCA) scheme with both centralized and distributed approximation algorithms. The centralized SCA (CSCA) algorithm has a logarithmic approximation ratio of 3(ln Δ + 1) and time complexity of O(n3) (Δ is the maximum degree of the network). The distributed SCA (DSCA) algorithm has a constant approximation ratio of at most 20 while keeping both linear time and message complexities. We have conducted both theoretical analysis and simulations to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms. This paper studies capacity bounds for discrete memoryless broadcast channels with confidential messages. Two private messages as well as a common message are transmitted; the common message is to be decoded by both receivers, while each private message is only for its intended receiver. In addition, each private message is to be kept secret from the unintended receiver where secrecy is measured by equivocation. Both inner and outer bounds are proposed to the rate equivocation region for broadcast channels with confidential messages. The proposed inner bound generalizes Csiszár and Körner's rate equivocation region for broadcast channels with a single confidential message, Liu et al.'s achievable rate region for broadcast channels with perfect secrecy Marton's and Gel'fand-Pinsker's achievable rate region for general broadcast channels. The proposed outer bounds, together with the inner bound, help establish the rate equivocation region of several classes of discrete memoryless broadcast channels with confidential messages, including the less noisy, deterministic, and semideterministic broadcast channels. Furthermore, specializing to the general broadcast channel by removing the confidentiality constraint, the proposed outer bounds reduce to new capacity outer bounds for the discrete memory broadcast channel. Data broadcasting is an efficient way of delivering information over asymmetric wireless environments, and push systems can provide high scalability and client hardware simplicity. Many environments, however, are characterized by a priori unknown client demands and groups of clients that are located at the same region and have similar demands. The main disadvantage of the approaches in such cases is the lack of fairness, because groups with few members have much lower performance than groups with many clients, because the performance per group (directly) depends on the group size. In this paper, we propose a fair push system where the performance of each client is independent of the total number of clients that are located in the same region. This condition is achieved without the overall performance of the system being significantly affected. Moreover, the proposed fair system is extended to a priority-based system that multiplies the performance of a specific group, depending exclusively on its priority level in relevance to the rest of the groups. Digital Video Broadcasting via Satellite-Second Generation (DVB-S2) was originally designed for fixed terminals, but it has recently been adopted by the DVB Return Channel via Satellite for Mobile scenario (DVB-RCS+M) under the singlecarrier-per-channel (SCPC) mode. For the purpose of adapting DVB-S2 for mobile reception, it has been agreed that, among others, forward error correction (FEC) at the link layer (LL) is a suitable means of achieving reliable reception in mobile environments. Prime candidates for LL-FEC had already been available schemes in the DVB family of standards: multiple-protocol encapsulation-FEC (MPE-FEC) and MPE interburst FEC (MPE-IFEC). Furthermore, different FEC codes may be applied within these schemes, i.e., Reed-Solomon (RS) or Raptor FEC codes. This paper introduces the integration of such schemes and codes on top of DVB-S2. In addition, we analyze the performance that can be achieved when applying these schemes with particular focus on two typical railway scenarios: 1) line of sight, together with the effect of railway power arches (LOS+PA), and 2) nonline of sight (nLOS). Both theoretical and simulation analyses reveal that LL-FEC can overcome typical fading effects in the railway scenario by selecting appropriate FEC codes and optimizing the coding parameters. We show that MPE-IFEC and extended MPE-FEC with Raptor codes - as finally specified in DVB-RCS+M-consistently show superior results over those of other LL-FEC for railway scenarios. We also indicate signaling updates to allow achievable performance. As for practical implementation, we propose two possible novel cross-layer architectures for unicast DVB-52 to provide quality of service (QoS). The architectures allow the migration from traditional packet encapsulation based on Moving Picture Experts Group 2-Transport Streams (MPEG2-TS) to new schemes, such as generic stream encapsulation (GSE). Due to the recent popularization of digital broadcasting systems, selective contents, i.e., watching contents selected by users themselves, have attracted great attention. For example, in a news program, after a user selects an interesting content, he/she watches it. In selective contents broadcasting, since the server needs to deliver many contents, the necessary bandwidth for continuously playing the data increases. Conventional schemes reduce the necessary bandwidth by producing an effective broadcast schedule. However, they do not consider the upper limit in the bandwidth. When an upper limit exists in the bandwidth, users may wait to play the data. In this paper, we propose a broadcasting scheme that reduces waiting time by considering available bandwidth. LDPC codes are state-of-art error correcting codes, included in several standards for broadcast transmissions. Iterative soft-decision decoding algorithms for LDPC codes reach excellent error correction capability; their performance, however, is strongly affected by finite-precision issues in the representation of inner variables. Great attention has been paid, in recent literature, to the topic of quantization for LDPC decoders, but mostly focusing on binary modulations and analysing finite precision effects in a disaggregrated manner, i.e., considering separately each block of the receiver. Modern telecommunication standards, instead, often adopt high order modulation schemes, e.g. M-QAM, with the aim to achieve large spectral efficiency. This puts additional quantization problems, that have been poorly debated in previous literature. This paper discusses the choice of suitable quantization characteristics for both the decoder messages and the received samples in LDPC-coded systems using M-QAM schemes. The analysis involves also the demapper block, that provides initial likelihood values for the decoder, by relating its quantization strategy with that of the decoder. A new demapper version, based on approximate expressions, is also presented, that introduces a slight deviation from the ideal case but yields a low complexity hardware implementation. The problem of optimizing access and bandwidth sharing among Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) connections in the mobile digital video broadcasting return channel via satellite (DVB-RCS) is tackled in this paper. After sketching the general system architecture, we explicitly deal with the dynamic assignment of bandwidth to TCP connections on the return link, which is accomplished by a network control center (NCC) placed onboard the satellite. Mobile users access the satellite in multifrequency time-division multiple access (MF-TDMA), whereas they receive data from the NCC in time-division multiplexing (TDM). Two different techniques, based on deterministic and random access, are compared in terms of bandwidth usage and average completion time per connection, when the mobile user acts as both server and client. In the server case, to increase the TCP throughput, both packet-level forward error correction (FEC) on data sent by mobile users and a duplicated and delayed acknowledgment technique for TCP acknowledgment traffic from the NCC to the mobile users are applied. An analysis of the packet losses and a simulation campaign of file transfers by employing a realistic channel model has been carried out. The results of the analysis show the convenience of adopting a technique, in addition to the optimal data redundancy in different cases, such as the server or client role of users, their willingness to pay, the file size, and the environment type. In this paper we analyze the performance of a low complexity superimposed channel estimation technique for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). In particular, an analytical model of interference due to channel estimation errors and imperfect superimposed sequence cancellation at receiver is proposed, whose effectiveness is validated by simulations. Indeed, the significative length of OFDM symbols used in new wide area broadcasting applications makes the superimposed technique a viable alternative to the classical pilot aided technique. For the same computational complexity, the comparison between the two techniques is based on the achievable system throughput both for the current terrestrial digital video broadcasting (DVB-T) standard and for the proposed next generation DVB-T (DVB-T2). In order to reduce the bit-rate of video signals, cur- rent coding standards apply hybrid coding with motion-compensated prediction and transform coding of the prediction error. In former publications, it has been shown that aliasing components contained in an image signal, as well as motion blur are limiting the prediction efficiency obtained by motion compensation. In this paper, we show that the analytical calculation of an optimal inter- polation filter at particular constraints is possible, resulting in total coding improvements of 20% at broadcast quality compared to the H.264/AVC High Profile. Furthermore, the spatial adaptation to local image characteristics enables further improvements of 0.15 dB for CIF sequences compared to globally adaptive filter or up to 0.6 dB, compared to the standard H.264/AVC. In providing video-on-demand (VoD) services to a number of clients through networks, the bandwidth requirements of video transmission restrict VoD services. For this reason, many significant broadcasting-based VoD schemes have been proposed to efficiently support services. However, the broadcasting-based VoD schemes approach needs frequency channel hopping, using many channels at the same time and managing many segments of a video. These make it difficult to implement. In this paper, we propose a harmonic staggered broadcasting scheme which has a simple structure and substantially improved VoD efficiency. The proposed scheme substantially reduces the number of segments required and the frequency for switching channels. Also this new scheme performs significantly better than the existing VoD schemes in viewer's waiting time and buffer requirements with simplicity. The numerical results demonstrate that the viewer's waiting time of the harmonic staggered broadcasting scheme is close to the harmonic broadcasting scheme and the buffer requirements of this can be adjusted by a video dividing coefficient h. Histogram equalization is a simple and effective method for contrast enhancement as it can automatically define the intensity transformation function based on statistical characteristics of the image. However, it tends to alter the brightness of the entire image, which it is not suitable for consumer electronic products, where preservation of the original brightness is essential to avoid annoying artifacts. This paper presents a new contrast enhancement method for generalization of the existing bihistogram equalization (BHE) and recursive mean-separate histogram equalization (RMSHE) methods. The proposed method is referred to gain-controllable clipped histogram equalization (GC-CHE) to provide both histogram equalization and brightness preservation. More specifically adaptive contrast enhancement is realized by using clipped histogram equalization with controllable gain. The clipping rate is determined based on the mean brightness, and the clipping threshold is determined based on the clipping rate. The clipping rate is adaptively controlled to enhance the contrast with preserving the mean brightness. It is mathematically proven that the mean brightness of the output image converges to that of the input image with adaptive controlled. Simulation results show that the proposed GC-CHE method outperforms existing histogram-based methods, such as HE, BHE, and RMSHE, in various situations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DVB-H networks allow high data rate broadcast access for hand-held terminals. A method to analyze the performance is developed. The influence of different MPE-FEC rates and modulation schemes on the performance of a DVB-H network is analyzed in this paper for 9 different reception conditions. Portable (indoor and outdoor) and mobile reception (car, train, tram, bus) are investigated. This analysis enables better estimations of the performance of DYB-H systems and an optimized DVB-H performance model. The percentage of valid reception, MPE-FEC gains, carrier to interference-plus-noise ratios, and minimal signal strengths for the different reception conditions and modulation schemes are presented. In this paper, we consider a peer-to-peer (P2P) network, where multimedia streams are broadcast by matched peers based on their resource reciprocation profiles. We propose a new framework where each peer creates a coalition of matched peers with which it can exchange resources in order to improve its utility. The utility is determined based on explicit consideration of the peer's multimedia attributes and the quality derived by the peers' reciprocation behavior. We adopt the proportional bargaining solution to negotiate the upload bandwidth among the matched peers. Proportional bargaining allows to determine each peer's optimal (in a Pareto optimal sense) upload rates in a coalition in terms of its utility impact. The impact of an incoming peer on the coalition value, which represents the collective utility achieved by the peers in a coalition, is assessed by explicitly investigating the coalition value improvement. In a multiple-antenna system with two transmitters and two receivers, a scenario of data communication, known as the X channel, is studied in which each receiver receives data from both transmitters. In this scenario, it is assumed that each transmitter is unaware of the other transmitter's data (noncooperative scenario). This system can be considered as a combination of two broadcast channels (from the transmitters' points of view) and two multiple-access channels (from the receivers' points of view). Taking advantage of both perspectives, two signaling schemes for such a scenario are developed. In these schemes, some linear filters are employed at the transmitters and at the receivers which decompose the system into either two noninterfering multiple-antenna broadcast subchannels or two noninterfering multiple-antenna multiple. access subchannels. The main objective in the design of the filters is to exploit the structure of the channel matrices to achieve the highest multiplexing gain (MG). It is shown that the proposed noncooperative signaling schemes outperform other known noncooperative schemes in terms of the achievable MG. In particular, it is shown that in some specific cases, the achieved MG is the same as the MG of the system if full cooperation is provided either between the transmitters or between the receivers. In the second part of the paper, it is shown that by using mixed design schemes, rather than decomposition schemes, and taking the statistical properties of the interference terms into account, the power offset of the system can be improved. In this paper, a low-complexity cooperative protocol that significantly increases the average throughput of multihop upstream transmissions for wireless tree networks is developed and analyzed. A system in which transmissions are assigned to nodes in a collision free, spatial time division fashion is considered. The suggested protocol exploits the broadcast nature of wireless networks where the communication channel is shared between multiple adjacent nodes within interference range. For any upstream end-to-end flow in the tree, each intermediate node receives information from both one-hop and two-hop neighbors and transmits only sufficient information such that the next upstream one-hop neighbor will he able to decode the packet. This approach can be viewed as the generalization of the classical three node relay channel for end-to-end flows in which each intermediate node becomes successively source, relay and destination. The achievable rate for any regular tree network is derived and an optional schedule that realizes this rate in most cases is proposed. Our protocol is shown to dramatically outperform the conventional scheme where intermediate nodes simply forward the packets hop by hop. In recent years, data broadcasting has become a promising technique to design a mobile information system with power conservation, high scalability, and high bandwidth utilization. In many applications, the query issued by a mobile client corresponds to multiple items that should be accessed in a sequential order. In this paper, we study the scheduling approach in such a sequential data broadcasting environment. Explicitly, we propose a general framework referred to as MULS (standing for MUltiLevel Service) for an information system. There are two primary stages in MULS: online scheduling (OLS) and optimization procedure. In the first stage, we propose an OLS algorithm to allocate the data items into multiple channels. As for the second stage, we devise an optimization procedure, called Sampling with Controlled Iteration (SCI), to enhance the quality of broadcast programs generated by algorithm OLS. Procedure SCI is able to strike a compromise between effectiveness and efficiency by tuning the control parameters. According to the experimental results, we show that algorithm OLS with procedure SCI outperforms the approaches in prior works prominently in both effectiveness (that is, the average access time of mobile users) and efficiency (that is, the complexity of the scheduling algorithm). Therefore, by cooperating algorithm OLS with procedure Sd, the proposed MULS framework is able to generate broadcast programs with the flexibility of providing different service qualities under different requirements of effectiveness and efficiency: in the dynamic environment in which the access patterns and information contents change rapidly, the parameters used in SCI will perform OLS with satisfactory service quality. As for the static environment in which the query profile and the database are updated infrequently, larger values of parameters are helpful to generate an optimized broadcast program, indicating the advantageous feature of MULS. In this paper, we develop optimization techniques for linear zero-forcing (ZF) multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast (BC) precoders. A computationally efficient technique based on QR-update algorithms for implementing this optimization is then proposed. The application of the proposed ZF precoders and decoders to systems with both large and small numbers of users is considered. The proposed optimization technique is also shown to perform very well in conjunction with nonlinear Tomlinson- Harashima precoding. Both coded and uncoded performances are considered. Technical details of the recently announced Chinese Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting Standard which defines the physical layer transmission protocol including the frame structure, channel coding and modulation schemes are discussed in this paper. The major differences between Chinese DTV standard in multi-carrier working mode and DVB-T standard, all occupying the same 8 MHz baseband bandwidth, are addressed. Among all the data broadcasting schemes, the harmonic scheme has been reported to provide the best performance for user latency; however, it does not always deliver the video data to the users in time. To provide the video data reliably, its two main variants, i.e., cautious and quasi-harmonic schemes have been proposed. These variants require a video to be divided into large number of subsegments that leads to a problem of management complexity. Besides the manageability problem, these variants require more bandwidth than the original harmonic scheme. The cautious and the quasi-harmonic schemes need, respectively, 0.50*b and 0.1771*b more bandwidth than the original harmonic scheme in limiting case. In this paper, we propose a new broad-casting scheme that is named as the geometrico-harmonic scheme. This scheme provides the video data to the users in time unlike the original harmonic scheme, and also its bandwidth requirement is very much same as that of the original harmonic scheme. In comparison to the cautious and the quasi-harmonic schemes, it has better performance for the user latency and the buffer space. This paper presents propagation measurement results in the UHF Digital Television (DTV) band, using an ATSC DTV signal as a channel sounding signal to investigate the characteristics of a wideband single-input multiple-output (SIMO) under mobile reception conditions. A series of DTV dual channel signal measurements were conducted in the Ottawa region to characterize the transmission of ATSC 8-VSB signals under different propagation environments. A dual channel receiver was used to record SIMO signals: these were used to provide channel impulse response estimates. From the recorded time-varying impulse responses and their correlation functions, average power delay profiles, scattering functions were computed to analyse the joint spatial fluctuations of the received signals. Broadcasting in wireless mobile computing environments is an effective technique to disseminate information to a massive number of clients equipped with powerful, battery operated devices. To conserve the usage of energy, which is a scarce resource, the information to be broadcast must be organized so that the client can selectively tune in at the desired portion of the broadcast. In this paper, the efficient, energy conserving transaction processing in mobile broadcast environments is examined with widely accepted approaches to indexed data organizations suited for a single item retrieval. The basic idea is to share the index information on multiple data items based on the predeclaration technique. The analytical and simulation studies have been performed to evaluate the effectiveness of our methodology, showing that predeclaration-based transaction processing with selective tuning ability can provide a significant performance improvement of battery life, while retaining a low access time. In this paper, we propose a gradual noisy chaotic neural network (G-NCNN) to solve the NP-complete broadcast scheduling problem (BSP) in packet radio networks. The objective of the BSP is to design an optimal time-division multiple-access (TDMA) frame structure with minimal TDMA frame length and maximal channel utilization. A two-phase optimization is adopted to achieve the two objectives with two different energy functions, so that the G-NCNN not only finds the minimum TDMA frame length but also maximizes the total node transmissions. In the first phase, we propose a G-NCNN which combines the noisy chaotic neural network (NCNN) and the gradual expansion scheme to find a minimal TDMA frame length. In the second phase, the NCNN is used to find maximal node transmissions in the TOMA frame obtained in the first phase. The performance is evaluated through several benchmark examples and 600 randomly generated instances. The results show that the G-NCNN outperforms previous approaches, such as mean field annealing, a hybrid Hopfield network-genetic algorithm, the sequential vertex coloring algorithm, and the gradual neural network. It is well known that HPAs (High Power Amplifiers) are inherently nonlinear devices and many researches have focused on the predistortion for memoryless HPAs. However, memory effects of HPAs can no longer be ignored when communication systems have wider bandwidth. Memoryless predistortion techniques proposed previously seldom have satisfactory effectiveness for typical wideband applications such as OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) systems. In this paper, an improved adaptive predistortion method called 2D LUT (2-dimension look-up table) with different accuracy levels is presented to linearize HPAs with memory effects. Simulation and experimental results show that 2D LUT implements excellent performance in mitigating the signal deterioration caused by memory effects, both rectifies the signal constellation distortion and suppresses the spectrum emission. Nowadays, the progression of digital broadcasting has been toward establishing a user-friendly TV watching environment through personalized broadcasting services. In the consumer domain, video content filtering enables personalized broadcasting service in which a TV viewer obtains desired scenes even from live broadcasts which can not possess metadata. In this paper, therefore, we propose a new real-time content filtering system for live broadcasts which can be applied to TV terminals such as the set-top box and personal video recorder. Based on the proposed filtering, the TV viewer can watch not only favorite broadcasts of a main channel, but also get desired scenes from live broadcasts of other channels simultaneously. Smart antenna technology can greatly improve the coverage radius of wireless systems by focusing the transmitted signal (beam) toward desired users. However, beamforming has an important side effect as it creates a region, herein referred to as the complementary region, where some users in the network cannot sense the directional signals (beams). We have referred to this as the hidden beam problem in Tarokh et al.. From a physical layer perspective, beamforming reduces cochannel interference (CCI). However, in systems that use medium access-control techniques such as the carrier-sense multiple access (CSMA) protocol in wireless local area networks, during a busy period of the channel, the users in the complementary region may wrongly decide that the medium is idle and transmit packets. This may cause CCI, unnecessary retransmissions, subsequent backoff, and increased network latency. We introduced the concept of complementary beamforming (CBF) to address this issue in Throkh et al. In this paper, we propose two new methods, called "subspace complementary beamforming" (SCBF) and "complementary superposition beamforming" (CSBF). The SCBF uses dummy data to ensure a controlled level of received energy in all directions of eigenvectors unused by downlink beamforming. The technique works in multipath fading channels. The approach achieves similar results to those reported in Tarokh et al.. However, it enables the second technique (CSBF) which can also send data content in the complementary beam. This allows passive nodes in the network to receive "broadcast" information, while the active nodes are engaged in the exchange of user-specific data. It is shown that CBF effects can be achieved simply by increasing the transmit power of only one of antenna elements when space-division multiple access is not applied. Digital video broadcasting-terrestrial (DVB-T) is an important multimedia technology capable of high data-rate transmission. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been the backbone technique in the current DVB-T systems adopted by Europe and Japan. However, since the OFDM system is very sensitive to the frequency synchronization and phase errors, which will induce the intercarrier interference (ICI), the ongoing research has been dedicated to this ICI problem in the presence of the Doppler frequency drift and the fading channels. A means to deal with the ICI problem is called the ICI self-cancellation or polynomial cancellation coding scheme. In this paper, we establish the complete simulation environment for the physical layer of the DVB-T system and then evaluate the effectiveness of the ICI self-cancellation coding scheme compared with the existing convolutional coding scheme for different fading channels and different Doppler frequencies. According to our simulation results, we conclude that the ICI self-cancellation scheme significantly outperforms the convolutional coding scheme which is adopted by the existing DVB-T standard for the AWGN and the frequency non-selective fading channels, but both schemes have the similar performance in the frequency-selective fading channels. Periodic broadcasting is known as an efficient technique to support near Video-on-Demand services for delivering popular videos, since it can reduce the bandwidth requirement for transmitting streaming video to simultaneous viewers. The channel transition problem is an issue to be concerned about the variability of popularity of video. In this paper, we present a novel channel transition scheme based on the fast broadcasting. Localization is one of the substantial issues in wireless sensor networks. Several approaches, including range-based and range-free, have been proposed to calculate positions for randomly deployed sensor nodes. With specific hardware, the range-based schemes typically achieve high accuracy based on either node-to- node distances or angles. On the other hand, the range-free mechanisms support coarse positioning accuracy with the less expense. This paper describes a range-free localization scheme using mobile anchor points. Each anchor point equipped with the GPS moves in the sensing field and broadcasts its current position periodically. The sensor nodes obtaining the information are able to compute their locations. With the scheme, no extra hardware or data communication is needed for the sensor nodes. Moreover, obstacles in the sensing fields can be tolerated. Data dissemination by the use of periodic broadcast is a viable sc bible mechanism due to the explosion of information services in wireless networks. Many research works have exploited the data broadcast methodologies, however, upon the premise that the broadcast traffic is static on a single broadcast channel. In practice, the broadcast traffic changes dynamically and multiple broadcast channels can be utilized for efficient data dissemination. Accordingly, in this paper we devise an adaptive multichannel data dissemination mechanism, including two components: the multichannel traffic-awareness and the deterministic balance search techniques. The multichannel traffic-awareness technique performs a cyclic estimation of dynamic access frequency distribution in response to traffic dynamics. With the measured estimation, he deterministic balance search technique adjusts channel allocation and item classification to further minimize and balance the push access and the pull response time. The experimental results show that the proposed mechanism is able to attain the result of channel partition and item classification very close to the optimum and, thus, minimize the mean access time in both push and pull channels simultaneously. Broadcast has often been used to disseminate frequently requested data efficiently to a large volume of mobile units over single or multiple channels. Since mobile units have limited battery power, the minimization of the access and tuning times for the broadcast data is an important problem. There have been many research efforts that focus on minimizing access and tuning times by providing indexes on the broadcast data. In this paper, we have studied an efficient index allocation method for broadcast data with skewed access frequencies over multiple physical channels which cannot be coalesced into a single high bandwidth channel. Previously proposed index allocation techniques have one of two problems. The first problem is that they require equal size for both index and data. The second problem is that their performance degrades when the number of given physical channels is not enough. These two problems will result in an increased average access time for the broadcast data. To cope with these problems, We propose a tree-structured index allocation method. Our method minimizes the average access time by broadcasting the hot data and their indices more frequently than the less hot data and their indexes over the dedicated index and data channels. We present an in-depth experimental and theoretical analysis of our method by comparing it with other similar techniques.
