In this paper the authors present how the ecosystem for innovation and ICT for logistics within Europe was shaped and played out in the recent one and a half decades. Better and more intelligent use of logistics' tangible and intangible resources, ranging from trucks to ICT back-office systems, will become necessary in the upcoming years. Various large-scale projects, programmes, and initiatives have been active and key trends in ICT – from IoT over smart services and the FI-PPP to ITS — were incorporated into the innovation ecosystem. Nevertheless, the final widespread integration and harvesting of its benefits is outstanding. Therefore, we present a single European Logistics Innovation Ecosystem which build upon a bottom-up, decentralised approach rather than the usual legacy system based top-down integration approach. The end of the paper presents possible options for innovation system benefits, deployment approaches, and application scenarios.
