Defects, such as debonding and foreign matters in transformer insulation paperboard, lead to local field strength concentration, thereby seriously affecting the safe operation of equipment. At present, industrial X-ray computed tomography scanning technology is mostly used to detect such defects. However, the equipment is expensive, the operation is complicated, and radiation hazard exists. In this study, terahertz time domain spectroscopy is introduced to explore the nondestructive testing method of oil-paper insulation defects. Three typical insulation paperboard defects of interface debonding, metal foreign matter mixing, and local carbonization traces were taken as the research objects. An artificial defect model is prepared. The time and frequency domain waveform characteristics of terahertz pulse wave propagating in the defect model are tested and analyzed. The results show that when the thickness of insulation paperboard covering is less than 5 mm, based on the amplitude and delay characteristics of terahertz time-domain signal, the location and size of typical internal defects can be accurately obtained, and time spectrum imaging can be realized. This study proves theoretically and experimentally the feasibility of noncontact and nondestructive testing for the internal defects of insulation paperboard by using terahertz technology. This report describes The University of Texas Student Cluster Competition team’s effort to reproduce the results of “MemXCT: memory-centric X-ray CT reconstruction with massive parallelization” (Hidayetoğlu et al., 2019). The article details a new memory-centric approach that reconstructs X-ray computed tomography (XCT) from noisy raw data. In our reproduction experiments, we utilized Microsoft Azure’s CycleCloud tool to provision, orchestrate, and manage our computing cluster in the cloud. In particular, we scheduled and benchmarked reconstruction workloads using Azure’s CPU-based HC44rs and GPU-based NC12s v2 virtual machine (VM) types to evaluate the scalability properties of the reconstruction approach and the performance differences between architectures. The HC44rs VMs contained 44 Intel Xeon Platinum cores, while the NC12s v2 VM was equipped with two NVIDIA P100 GPUs. We used a recent version of Intel’s compiler stack with the MKL library for our CPU code along with CUDA 11.1 on GPUs. Overall, our results confirm the findings of the original article, demonstrating similar acceleration on GPUs and scalability properties on CPUs. In this technical report, we focus on reproducing the results reported in the paper “MemXCT: Memory-Centric X-ray CT Reconstruction with Massive Parallelization” [1]. MemXCT is a scalable approach to X-ray Computed Tomography reconstruction which removes redundant computation. We reproduced the single CPU/GPU performance as well as strong scaling experiments. We set up our configurations on Microsoft Azure CycleCloud and have two clusters. One cluster has 4 nodes with 60 CPUs on each node and the other cluster has 4 nodes with 4 NVIDIA V100 GPUs on each node. Both clusters come with InfiniBand. The original author conducted his experiments on Theta and Blue Waters supercomputers. We were able to reproduce part of the results in the original paper, however, failed to produce similar performance on other experiments. This report analyzes the reproducibility of the paper “MemXCT: Memory-Centric X-ray CT Reconstruction with Massive Parallelization” by Hidayetoğlu et al. in the cloud as part of the SC20 Virtual Student Cluster Competition (VSCC). To reproduce the results from the original work, the ETH Zürich SC20 VSCC team performed a series of CT reconstructions and performed a scaling study using three provided sinograms. All experimental runs were performed during the SC20 VSCC on an HPC cluster hosted in the Microsoft Azure CycleCloud. In this paper, we describe discrepancies in results as a factor of the differences in experiment environments and insufficient parameter tuning. Hidayetoğlu et al. propose a novel memory-centric algorithm to reconstruct X-ray CT images in the SC19 article entitled “MemXCT: Memory-Centric X-ray CT Reconstruction with Massive Parallelization”. They formulate the reconstruction with several SpMVs, and propose two memory-centric optimizations to improve cache locality for better memory bandwidth utilization, i.e., a two-level pseudo-Hilbert ordering and a multi-stage input buffering. In this article, we present our results on reproducing that article to show its effectiveness and generality, as part of the SC20 Student Cluster Competition Reproducibility Challenge. We reproduce the execution time and memory bandwidth tests in that article on various architectures, including Intel CPUs, AMD CPUs, and NVIDIA GPUs. We further analyze the bottleneck on different architectures by comparing the achieved memory bandwidth with the peak bandwidth on those architectures. We then reproduce the strong scaling test on CPU and GPU clusters with different scales, and use the proposed algorithm to reconstruct three new X-ray computed tomograms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a pandemic disease has caused 4 million deaths and more than 200 million infections worldwide (as of August 4, 2021). Rapid and accurate diagnosis of COVID-19 infection is critical to controlling the spread of the epidemic. In order to quickly and efficiently detect COVID-19 and reduce the threat of COVID-19 to human survival, we have firstly proposed a detection framework based on reinforcement learning for COVID-19 diagnosis, which constructs a mixed loss function that can integrate the advantages of multiple loss functions. This paper uses the accuracy of the validation set as the reward value, and obtains the initial model for the next epoch by searching the model corresponding to the maximum reward value in each epoch. We also have proposed a prediction framework that integrates multiple detection frameworks using parameter sharing to predict the progression of patients' disease without additional training. This paper also constructed a higher-quality version of the CT image dataset containing 247 cases screened by professional physicians, and obtained more excellent results on this dataset. Meanwhile, we used the other two COVID-19 datasets as external verifications, and still achieved a high accuracy rate without additional training. Finally, the experimental results show that our classification accuracy can reach 98.31%, and the precision, sensitivity, specificity, and AUC (Area Under Curve) are 98.82%, 97.99%, 98.67%, and 0.989, respectively. The accuracy of external verification can reach 93.34% and 91.05%. What's more, the accuracy of our prediction framework is 91.54%. This article reproduces the results of the Supercomputing 2019 article, MemXCT: Memory-Centric X-ray CT Reconstruction with Massive Parallelization by Hidayetoğlu et al. as part of the Supercomputing 2020 Student Cluster Competition Reproducibility Challenge. We reproduce the single CPU-GPU performance experiments and the strong scaling experiments and compare the results to the original article. Although we are not able to use the exact HPC system from the original article, we use similar hardware and configurations to recreate the original environment in Microsoft Azure Cloud services. We were not able to demonstrate exact performance characteristics from the original article due to hardware limitations in our environment, but we are able to reproduce similar performance trends for both single-node and scaling experiments. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has commonly been used to detect and diagnose brain disease and monitor treatment as non-invasive imaging technology. MRI produces three-dimensional images that help neurologists to identify anomalies from brain images precisely. However, this is a time-consuming and labor-intensive process. The improvement in machine learning and efficient computation provides a computer-aid solution to analyze MRI images and identify the abnormality quickly and accurately. Image segmentation has become a hot and research-oriented area in the medical image analysis community. The computer-aid system for brain abnormalities identification provides the possibility for quickly classifying the disease for early treatment. This article presents a review of the research papers (from 1998 to 2020) on brain tumors segmentation from MRI images. We examined the core segmentation algorithms of each research paper in detail. This article provides readers with a complete overview of the topic and new dimensions of how numerous machine learning and image segmentation approaches are applied to identify brain tumors. This paper aims to achieve computationally efficient and high-accuracy subpixel image registration with large displacements under the rotation–scale–translation model. This paper employs the classical phase correlation algorithm and the Lucas–Kanade (LK) algorithm in a two-stage coarse-to-fine framework, for which the motivation is from the observation that the two algorithms exhibit strong complementary property between convergence range and subpixel accuracy. In this framework, the LK algorithm will also become computationally efficient owing to the small residual displacement. On the other hand, this paper takes into account the residual model with respect to the compensation scheme explicitly, and deduces formulas for the final results combination, which is expected to be closer to the true displacement vector and thus further improve the estimation accuracy. Since the compensation can be applied to either the target image or the reference image, two algorithms are presented accordingly, and analysis as well as comparison are also performed. Atlas-based segmentation is used in radiotherapy planning to accelerate the delineation of organs at risk (OARs). Atlas selection has been proposed to improve the performance of segmentation, assuming that the more similar the atlas is to the patient, the better the result. It follows that the larger the database of atlases from which to select, the better the results should be. This paper seeks to estimate a clinically achievable expected performance under this assumption. Assuming a perfect atlas selection, an extreme value theory has been applied to estimate the accuracy of single-atlas and multi-atlas segmentation given a large database of atlases. For this purpose, clinical contours of most common OARs on computed tomography of the head and neck (${N}=\textsf {316}$) and thoracic (${N}=\textsf {280}$) cases were used. This paper found that while for most organs, perfect segmentation cannot be reasonably expected, auto-contouring performance of a level corresponding to clinical quality could be consistently expected given a database of 5000 atlases under the assumption of perfect atlas selection. This paper describes the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) type A (ac only) ground-fault detection circuit and its limitations in accurately detecting electrical ground-fault currents in today's modern electrical installations. Discussed are the effects of waveform modifying power sources and the effect of the dc component on the efficacy of type A safety devices. Limitations of the UL1053 standard for ground-fault sensing and relaying equipment are discussed. This paper describes a new image reconstruction method for digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT). The new method incorporates detector blur into the forward model. The detector blur in DBT causes correlation in the measurement noise. By making a few approximations that are reasonable for breast imaging, we formulated a regularized quadratic optimization problem with a data-fit term that incorporates models for detector blur and correlated noise (DBCN). We derived a computationally efficient separable quadratic surrogate (SQS) algorithm to solve the optimization problem that has a non-diagonal noise covariance matrix. We evaluated the SQS-DBCN method by reconstructing DBT scans of breast phantoms and human subjects. The contrast-to-noise ratio and sharpness of microcalcifications were analyzed and compared with those by the simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique. The quality of soft tissue lesions and parenchymal patterns was examined. The results demonstrate the potential to improve the image quality of reconstructed DBT images by incorporating the system physics model. Deep neural networks have been tremendously successful at segmenting objects in images. However, it has been shown they still have limitations on challenging problems such as the segmentation of medical images. The main reason behind this lower success resides in the reduced size of the object in the image. In this paper we overcome this limitation through a cyclic collaborative framework, CyCoSeg. The proposed framework is based on a deep active shape model (D-ASM), which provides prior information about the shape of the object, and a semantic segmentation network (SSN). These two models collaborate to reach the desired segmentation by influencing each other: SSN helps D-ASM identify relevant keypoints in the image through an Expectation Maximization formulation, while D-ASM provides a segmentation proposal that guides the SSN. This cycle is repeated until both models converge. Extensive experimental evaluation shows CyCoSeg boosts the performance of the baseline models, including several popular SSNs, while avoiding major architectural modifications. The effectiveness of our method is demonstrated on the left ventricle segmentation on two benchmark datasets, where our approach achieves one of the most competitive results in segmentation accuracy. Macrovascular invasion (MaVI) is a major threat to survival in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which should be treated as early as possible to ensure safety and efficacy. In this aspect, MaVI prediction can be helpful. However, MaVI prediction is difficult because of the inter-class similarity and intra-class variation of HCC in computed tomography (CT) images. Moreover, existing methods fail to include clinical priori knowledge associated with HCC, leading to incomprehensive information extraction. In this paper, we proposed a prior knowledge-aware fusion network (PKAFnet) to accurately achieve MaVI prediction in CT images. First, a perception module was presented to extract features related to tumor marginal heterogeneity in the graph domain, which contributed to rotation invariance and captured intensity variations of tumor margin. Second, a tumor segmentation network was built to obtain global information of a 3D tumor image and information associated with tumor internal heterogeneity in the image domain. Finally, multi-domain features associated with the tumor margin and tumor region were combined by using a multi-domain attentional feature fusion module. Thus, by incorporating MaVI-related prior knowledge, our PKAFnet can alleviate overfitting, which can improve the discriminative ability. The proposed PKAFnet was validated on a multi-center dataset, and remarkable performance was achieved in an independent testing set. Moreover, the interpretability of perception module and segmentation network were presented in our paper, which illustrated the effectiveness and credibility of PKAFnet. Spectral computed tomography (CT) reconstructs images from different spectral data through photon counting detectors (PCDs). However, due to the limited number of photons and the counting rate in the corresponding spectral segment, the reconstructed spectral images are usually affected by severe noise. In this paper, we propose a fourth-order nonlocal tensor decomposition model for spectral CT image reconstruction (FONT-SIR). To maintain the original spatial relationships among similar patches and improve the imaging quality, similar patches without vectorization are grouped in both spectral and spatial domains simultaneously to form the fourth-order processing tensor unit. The similarity of different patches is measured with the cosine similarity of latent features extracted using principal component analysis (PCA). By imposing the constraints of the weighted nuclear and total variation (TV) norms, each fourth-order tensor unit is decomposed into a low-rank component and a sparse component, which can efficiently remove noise and artifacts while preserving the structural details. Moreover, the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is employed to solve the decomposition model. Extensive experimental results on both simulated and real data sets demonstrate that the proposed FONT-SIR achieves superior qualitative and quantitative performance compared with several state-of-the-art methods. Encoding-decoding (ED) CNNs have demonstrated state-of-the-art performance for noise reduction over the past years. This has triggered the pursuit of better understanding the inner workings of such architectures, which has led to the theory of deep convolutional framelets (TDCF), revealing important links between signal processing and CNNs. Specifically, the TDCF demonstrates that ReLU CNNs induce low-rankness, since these models often do not satisfy the necessary redundancy to achieve perfect reconstruction (PR). In contrast, this paper explores CNNs that do meet the PR conditions. We demonstrate that in these type of CNNs soft shrinkage and PR can be assumed. Furthermore, based on our explorations we propose the learned wavelet-frame shrinkage network, or LWFSN and its residual counterpart, the rLWFSN. The ED path of the (r)LWFSN complies with the PR conditions, while the shrinkage stage is based on the linear expansion of thresholds proposed Blu and Luisier. In addition, the LWFSN has only a fraction of the training parameters (<1%) of conventional CNNs, very small inference times, low memory footprint, while still achieving performance close to state-of-the-art alternatives, such as the tight frame (TF) U-Net and FBPConvNet, in low-dose CT denoising. Virtual engineering is being widely adopted in diverse technical fields and has the potential to accelerate the realization of tokamak fusion energy. In this paper, we demonstrate, for the first time, the use of virtual engineering techniques to enhance the development cycle of a water-cooled divertor plasma facing component. The divertor concept under development is the thermal break, which aims to increase heat flux limits and DEMO-relevance by alleviating the high thermal mismatch stress between a tungsten monoblock and a copper alloy cooling pipe. Response surface-based design search and optimization is used to explore the potential of the concept and to inform the design of a high-heat-flux (HHF) mock-up. In developing a brazing manufacturing procedure, computed tomography scanning and subsequent image-based finite-element modeling revealed a defective joining process which would result in unacceptable divertor performance. The same techniques were used to develop an improved brazing procedure that was used to manufacture the mock-ups. A production defect was discovered by ultrasonic qualification testing, but a “virtual twin” model confirmed the acceptable performance of the mock-up under HHF. Indeed, all mock-ups were then subjected to at least 100 cycles of 20 MW/ $\text{m}^{2}$ HHF testing, with no signs of damage. The development of these virtual engineering and modeling techniques will facilitate criteria for design and component rejection, and in future enable predictive maintenance of components in service. We present here the Arkansas AI-Campus solution method for the 2019 Kidney Tumor Segmentation Challenge (KiTS19). Our Arkansas AI-Campus team participated the KiTS19 Challenge for four months, from March to July of 2019. This paper provides a summary of our methods, training, testing and validation results for this grand challenge in biomedical imaging analysis. Our deep learning model is an ensemble of U-Net models developed after testing many model variations. Our model has consistent performance on the local test dataset and the final competition independent test dataset. The model achieved local test Dice scores of 0.949 for kidney and tumor segmentation, and 0.601 for tumor segmentation, and the final competition test earned Dice scores 0.9470 and 0.6099 respectively. The Arkansas AI-Campus team solution with a composite DICE score of 0.7784 has achieved a final ranking of top fifty worldwide, and top five among the United States teams in the KiTS19 Competition. Segmentation of hepatic vessels from 3D CT images is necessary for accurate diagnosis and preoperative planning for liver cancer. However, due to the low contrast and high noises of CT images, automatic hepatic vessel segmentation is a challenging task. Hepatic vessels are connected branches containing thick and thin blood vessels, showing an important structural characteristic or a prior: the connectivity of blood vessels. However, this is rarely applied in existing methods. In this paper, we segment hepatic vessels from 3D CT images by utilizing the connectivity prior. To this end, a graph neural network (GNN) used to describe the connectivity prior of hepatic vessels is integrated into a general convolutional neural network (CNN). Specifically, a graph attention network (GAT) is first used to model the graphical connectivity information of hepatic vessels, which can be trained with the vascular connectivity graph constructed directly from the ground truths. Second, the GAT is integrated with a lightweight 3D U-Net by an efficient mechanism called the plug-in mode, in which the GAT is incorporated into the U-Net as a multi-task branch and is only used to supervise the training procedure of the U-Net with the connectivity prior. The GAT will not be used in the inference stage, and thus will not increase the hardware and time costs of the inference stage compared with the U-Net. Therefore, hepatic vessel segmentation can be well improved in an efficient mode. Lymphoma is cancer originated in the lymphatic system. Clinically, automatic and accurate lymphoma segmentation is critical yet challenging. Recently, UNet-like architectures are widely used for medical image segmentation. The pure UNet-like architectures can model the spatial correlation between the feature maps very well, whereas they discard the critical temporal correlation. Some prior works combine UNet with recurrent neural networks (RNNs) to utilize the spatial and temporal correlation simultaneously. However, it is inconvenient to incorporate some advanced techniques proposed for UNet to RNNs, which hampers their further improvements. In this paper, we propose a recurrent dense siamese decoder architecture, which simulates RNNs and can densely utilize the spatial temporal correlation between the decoder feature maps following a “UNet” approach. We combine it with a modified hyper dense encoder. Therefore, the proposed model is a UNet with a hyper dense encoder and a recurrent dense siamese decoder (HD-RDS-UNet). To stabilize the training process, we propose a weighted Dice loss with stable gradient and self-adaptive parameters. We perform patient-independent five-fold cross-validation on 3D volumes collected from whole-body PET/CT scans of patients with lymphomas. The experimental results show that the volume-wise average Dice score and sensitivity are 85.58% and 94.63%, respectively. The patient-wise average Dice score and sensitivity are 85.85% and 95.01%, respectively. The different configurations of HD-RDS-UNet consistently show superiority in the performance comparison. Besides, a trained HD-RDS-UNet can be easily pruned, resulting in significantly reduced inference time and memory usage, while keeping very good segmentation performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accompanied with the rapid increase of the demand for routine examination of leucorrhea, efficiency and accuracy become the primary task. However, in super depth of field (SDoF) system, the problem of automatic detection and localization of cells in leucorrhea micro-images is still a big challenge. The changing of the relative position between the cell center and focus plane of microscope lead to variable cell morphological structure in the two-dimensional image, which is an important reason for the low accuracy of current deep learning target detection algorithms. In this paper, an object detection method based on Retinanet in state of super depth of field is proposed, which can achieve high precision detecting of leucorrhea components by the SDoF feature aggregation module. Compared with the current mainstream algorithms, the mean average accuracy (mAP) index has been improved significantly, the mAP index is 82.7% for SDoF module and 83.0% for SDoF+ module, with an average increase of more than 10%. These improved features can significantly improve the efficiency and accuracy of the algorithm. The algorithm proposed in this paper can be integrated into the leucorrhea automatic detection system. The current three-dimensional reconstruction algorithm of medical CT images still has certain drawbacks, and it is difficult to apply it effectively to clinical practice. In view of this, based on the parallel contour line, this paper studies the three-dimensional reconstruction algorithm of medical CT image, and realizes the three-dimensional reconstruction of the aortic dissection by surface drawing and volume rendering. At the same time, through the three modules of image preprocessing, aortic segmentation, dissection segmentation and three-dimensional reconstruction, the three-dimensional reconstruction of the patient’s aortic dissection is realized. The reconstructed three-dimensional aortic dissection model can observe the shape of the internal sandwich model directly through the aortic wall, and the display of the three-dimensional structure of the interlayer is more intuitive and clearer. Finally, this paper designs experiments to analyze the performance of the algorithm. The research indicates that the three-dimensional reconstruction algorithm of medical CT images proposed in this paper has certain clinical effects and can provide theoretical reference for subsequent related research. Previous work has shown that total variation superiorization (TVS) improves reconstructed image quality in proton computed tomography (pCT). The structure of the TVS algorithm has evolved since then and this paper investigated if this new algorithmic structure provides additional benefits to pCT image quality. Structural and parametric changes introduced to the original TVS algorithm included: (1) inclusion or exclusion of TV reduction requirement, (2) a variable number, $N$ , of TV perturbation steps per feasibility-seeking iteration, and (3) introduction of a perturbation kernel $0< \alpha < 1$. The structural change of excluding the TV reduction requirement check tended to have a beneficial effect for $3\le N\le 6$ and allows full parallelization of the TVS algorithm. Repeated perturbations per feasibility-seeking iterations reduced total variation (TV) and material dependent standard deviations for $3\le N\le 6$. The perturbation kernel $\alpha $ , effectively equal to $\alpha =0.5$ in the original TVS algorithm, reduced TV and standard deviations as $\alpha $ was increased beyond $\alpha =0.5$ , but negatively impacted reconstructed relative stopping power (RSP) values for $\alpha >0.75$. The reductions in TV and standard deviations allowed feasibility-seeking with a larger relaxation parameter $\lambda $ than previously used, without the corresponding increases in standard deviations experienced with the original TVS algorithm. This paper demonstrates that the modifications related to the evolution of the original TVS algorithm provide benefits in terms of both pCT image quality and computational efficiency for appropriately chosen parameter values. The ML-EM (maximum likelihood expectation maximization) algorithm is the most popular image reconstruction method when the measurement noise is Poisson distributed. This short paper considers the problem that for a given noisy projection data set, whether the ML-EM algorithm is able to provide an approximate solution that is close to the true solution. It is well-known that the ML-EM algorithm at early iterations converges towards the true solution and then in later iterations diverges away from the true solution. Therefore a potential good approximate solution can only be obtained by early termination. This short paper argues that the ML-EM algorithm is not optimal in providing such an approximate solution. In order to show that the ML-EM algorithm is not optimal, it is only necessary to provide a different algorithm that performs better. In this paper, we develop a new weakly supervised learning algorithm to learn to segment cancerous regions in histopathology images. This paper is under a multiple instance learning (MIL) framework with a new formulation, deep weak supervision (DWS); we also propose an effective way to introduce constraints to our neural networks to assist the learning process. The contributions of our algorithm are threefold: 1) we build an end-to-end learning system that segments cancerous regions with fully convolutional networks (FCNs) in which image-to-image weakly-supervised learning is performed; 2) we develop a DWS formulation to exploit multi-scale learning under weak supervision within FCNs; and 3) constraints about positive instances are introduced in our approach to effectively explore additional weakly supervised information that is easy to obtain and enjoy a significant boost to the learning process. Multimodal medical image fusion can combine salient information from different source images of the same part and reduce the redundancy of information. In this paper, an efficient hybrid image decomposition (HID) method is proposed. It combines the advantages of spatial domain and transform domain methods and breaks through the limitations of the algorithms based on single category features. The accurate separation of base layer and texture details is conducive to the better effect of the fusion rules. First, the source anatomical images are decomposed into a series of high frequencies and a low frequency via nonsubsampled shearlet transform (NSST). Second, the low frequency is further decomposed using the designed optimization model based on structural similarity and structure tensor to get an energy texture layer and a base layer. Then, the modified choosing maximum (MCM) is designed to fuse base layers. The sum of modified Laplacian (SML) is used to fuse high frequencies and energy texture layers. Finally, the fused low frequency can be obtained by adding fused energy texture layer and base layer. And the fused image is reconstructed by the inverse NSST. The superiority of the proposed method is verified by amounts of experiments on 50 pairs of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images and computed tomography (CT) images and others, and compared with 12 state-of-the-art medical image fusion methods. The goal of this paper is to calculate a complex internal respiratory and tumoral movements by measuring respiratory air flows and thorax movements. In this context, we present a new lung tumor tracking approach based on a patient-specific biomechanical model of the respiratory system, which takes into account the physiology of respiratory motion to simulate the real non-reproducible motion. The behavior of the lungs, is directly driven by the simulated actions of the breathing muscles, i.e. the diaphragm and the intercostal muscles (the rib cage). In this paper, the lung model is monitored and controlled by a personalized lung pressure/volume relationship during a whole respiratory cycle. The lung pressure and rib kinematics are patient specific and obtained by surrogate measurement. The rib displacement corresponding to the transformation which was computed by finite helical axis method from the end of exhalation (EE) to the end of inhalation (EI). The lung pressure is calculated by an optimization framework based on inverse finite element analysis, by minimizing the lung volume errors, between the respiratory volume (respiratory airflow exchange) and the simulated volume (calculated by biomechanical simulation). We have evaluated the model accuracy on five public datasets. We have also evaluated the lung tumor motion identified in 4D CT scan images and compared it with the trajectory that was obtained by finite element simulation. The effects of rib kinematics on lung tumor trajectory were investigated. Over all phases of respiration, our developed model is able to predict the lung tumor motion with an average landmark error of $2.0\pm \text{1.3 mm}$. This paper reports the fabrication of a broadband near-infrared response (vis-NIR) photodetector (PD) using Cu2SnS3 (CTS) quantum dots (QDs) as photoactive semiconductor material and graphene as a carrier transport medium. The QDs of earth abundant, nontoxic, and inexpensive CTS have been synthesized by solvothermal method, and the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique is used to synthesize few layers and monolayers of graphene. The fabricated CTS QDs/graphene/SiO2/Si PD demonstrated high values of responsivity (~110.089 A/W), detectivity ($\sim 1.25 \times 10^{{12}}\,\,\text {cm} \cdot \text {Hz}^{\text {1/2}} \cdot \text {W}^{-{1}}$), and quantum efficiency (~160.9) for broadband (vis-NIR) region due to high absorption coefficient of CTS QDs and very high mobility (~200 000 cm2/V–s) of graphene. Available super-resolution techniques for 3-D images are either computationally inefficient prior-knowledge-based iterative techniques or deep learning methods which require a large database of known low-resolution and high-resolution image pairs. A recently introduced tensor-factorization-based approach offers a fast solution without the use of known image pairs or strict prior assumptions. In this paper, this factorization framework is investigated for single image resolution enhancement with an offline estimate of the system point spread function. The technique is applied to 3-D cone beam computed tomography for dental image resolution enhancement. To demonstrate the efficiency of our method, it is compared to a recent state-of-the-art iterative technique using low-rank and total variation regularizations. In contrast to this comparative technique, the proposed reconstruction technique gives a 2-order-of-magnitude improvement in running time—2 min compared to 2 h for a dental volume of $282\times 266\times392$ voxels. Furthermore, it also offers slightly improved quantitative results (peak signal-to-noise ratio and segmentation quality). Another advantage of the presented technique is the low number of hyperparameters. Underground hydrocarbon reservoir rocks comprise numerous multiscale irregular pores that significantly affect the mechanical and fluid transport properties of the rock. It is considerably challenging for in situ geological monitoring and laboratory tests to accurately characterize the changes in the interior structure and the corresponding mechanical properties of the rock mass during dynamic excavation processes. The 3-D numerical reconstruction models that are based on the statistical information extracted from X-ray computed tomography (XCT) images provide a feasible method to obtain and characterize the interior pore structures and their effects on the physical responses of reservoir rocks. However, obtaining sufficient high-resolution 2-D XCT images is economically expensive by the traditional fan beam CT scan system. Reconstructing 3-D porous structures by computational methods using statistical information extracted from XCT images usually has low efficiency. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce a novel method to numerically reconstruct natural sandstone rock using a small number of 2-D XCT images. The Bayesian information criterion was used to determine the minimum number of 2-D XCT images required to ensure the expected reconstruction accuracy. A multithread parallel reconstruction scheme was employed to improve the efficiency. The accuracy of the proposed method was verified by comparing the statistical correlation functions, geometrical and topological characteristics, and mechanical properties of pore structures between the reconstructed model and a sandstone prototype. Machine learning algorithms can have difficulties adapting to data from different sources, for example from different imaging modalities. We present and analyze three techniques for unsupervised cross-modality feature learning, using a shared autoencoder-like convolutional network that learns a common representation from multi-modal data. We investigate a form of feature normalization, a learning objective that minimizes cross-modality differences, and modality dropout, in which the network is trained with varying subsets of modalities. We measure the same-modality and cross-modality classification accuracies and explore whether the models learn modality-specific or shared features. This paper presents experiments on two public data sets, with knee images from two MRI modalities, provided by the Osteoarthritis Initiative, and brain tumor segmentation on four MRI modalities from the BRATS challenge. All three approaches improved the cross-modality classification accuracy, with modality dropout and per-feature normalization giving the largest improvement. We observed that the networks tend to learn a combination of cross-modality and modality-specific features. Overall, a combination of all three methods produced the most cross-modality features and the highest cross-modality classification accuracy, while maintaining most of the same-modality accuracy. Reducing the exposure to X-ray radiation while maintaining a clinically acceptable image quality is desirable in various CT applications. To realize low-dose CT (LdCT) imaging, model-based iterative reconstruction (MBIR) algorithms are widely adopted, but they require proper prior knowledge assumptions in the sinogram and/or image domains and involve tedious manual optimization of multiple parameters. In this paper, we propose a deep learning (DL)-based strategy for MBIR to simultaneously address prior knowledge design and MBIR parameter selection in one optimization framework. Specifically, a parameterized plug-and-play alternating direction method of multipliers (3pADMM) is proposed for the general penalized weighted least-squares model, and then, by adopting the basic idea of DL, the parameterized plug-and-play (3p) prior and the related parameters are optimized simultaneously in a single framework using a large number of training data. The main contribution of this paper is that the 3p prior and the related parameters in the proposed 3pADMM framework can be supervised and optimized simultaneously to achieve robust LdCT reconstruction performance. Experimental results obtained on clinical patient datasets demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve promising gains over existing algorithms for LdCT image reconstruction in terms of noise-induced artifact suppression and edge detail preservation. Anomaly detection refers to the identification of cases that do not conform to the expected pattern, which takes a key role in diverse research areas and application domains. Most of existing methods can be summarized as anomaly object detection-based and reconstruction error-based techniques. However, due to the bottleneck of defining encompasses of real-world high-diversity outliers and inaccessible inference process, individually, most of them have not derived groundbreaking progress. To deal with those imperfectness, and motivated by memory-based decision-making and visual attention mechanism as a filter to select environmental information in human vision perceptual system, in this paper, we propose a Multi-scale Attention Memory with hash addressing Autoencoder network (MAMA Net) for anomaly detection. First, to overcome a battery of problems result from the restricted stationary receptive field of convolution operator, we coin the multi-scale global spatial attention block which can be straightforwardly plugged into any networks as sampling, upsampling and downsampling function. On account of its efficient features representation ability, networks can achieve competitive results with only several level blocks. Second, it’s observed that traditional autoencoder can only learn an ambiguous model that also reconstructs anomalies “well” due to lack of constraints in training and inference process. To mitigate this challenge, we design a hash addressing memory module that proves abnormalities to produce higher reconstruction error for classification. In addition, we couple the mean square error (MSE) with Wasserstein loss to improve the encoding data distribution. Experiments on various datasets, including two different COVID-19 datasets and one brain MRI (RIDER) dataset prove the robustness and excellent generalization of the proposed MAMA Net. Timely and accurate diagnosis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is crucial in curbing its spread. Slow testing results of reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and a shortage of test kits have led to consider chest computed tomography (CT) as an alternative screening and diagnostic tool. Many deep learning methods, especially convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have been developed to detect COVID-19 cases from chest CT scans. Most of these models demand a vast number of parameters which often suffer from overfitting in the presence of limited training data. Moreover, the linearly stacked single-branched architecture based models hamper the extraction of multi-scale features, reducing the detection performance. In this paper, to handle these issues, we propose an extremely lightweight CNN with multi-scale feature learning blocks called as MFL-Net. The MFL-Net comprises a sequence of MFL blocks that combines multiple convolutional layers with $3 \times 3$ filters and residual connections effectively, thereby extracting multi-scale features at different levels and preserving them throughout the block. The model has only 0.78M parameters and requires low computational cost and memory space compared to many ImageNet pretrained CNN architectures. Comprehensive experiments are carried out using two publicly available COVID-19 CT imaging datasets. The results demonstrate that the proposed model achieves higher performance than pretrained CNN models and state-of-the-art methods on both datasets with limited training data despite having an extremely lightweight architecture. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) continues to have a negative impact on healthcare systems around the world, though the vaccines have been developed and national vaccination coverage rate is steadily increasing. At the current stage, automatically segmenting the lung infection area from CT images is essential for the diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19. Thanks to the development of deep learning technology, some deep learning solutions for lung infection segmentation have been proposed. However, due to the scattered distribution, complex background interference and blurred boundaries, the accuracy and completeness of the existing models are still unsatisfactory. To this end, we propose a boundary guided semantic learning network (BSNet) in this paper. On the one hand, the dual-branch semantic enhancement module that combines the top-level semantic preservation and progressive semantic integration is designed to model the complementary relationship between different high-level features, thereby promoting the generation of more complete segmentation results. On the other hand, the mirror-symmetric boundary guidance module is proposed to accurately detect the boundaries of the lesion regions in a mirror-symmetric way. Experiments on the publicly available dataset demonstrate that our BSNet outperforms the existing state-of-the-art competitors and achieves a real-time inference speed of 44 FPS. Limited angle reconstruction is a typical ill-posed problem in computed tomography (CT). Given incomplete projection data, images reconstructed by conventional analytical algorithms and iterative methods suffer from severe structural distortions and artifacts. In this paper, we proposed a self-augmented multi-stage deep-learning network (Sam’s Net) for end-to-end reconstruction of limited angle CT. With the merit of the alternating minimization technique, Sam’s Net integrates multi-stage self-constraints into cross-domain optimization to provide additional constraints on the manifold of neural networks. In practice, a sinogram completion network (SCNet) and artifact suppression network (ASNet), together with domain transformation layers constitute the backbone for cross-domain optimization. An online self-augmentation module was designed following the manner defined by alternating minimization, which enables a self-augmented learning procedure and multi-stage inference manner. Besides, a substitution operation was applied as a hard constraint for the solution space based on the data fidelity and a learnable weighting layer was constructed for data consistency refinement. Sam’s Net forms a new framework for ill-posed reconstruction problems. In the training phase, the self-augmented procedure guides the optimization into a tightened solution space with enriched diverse data distribution and enhanced data consistency. In the inference phase, multi-stage prediction can improve performance progressively. Extensive experiments with both simulated and practical projections under 90-degree and 120-degree fan-beam configurations validate that Sam’s Net can significantly improve the reconstruction quality with high stability and robustness. With the unprecedented developments in deep learning, automatic segmentation of main abdominal organs seems to be a solved problem as state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods have achieved comparable results with inter-rater variability on many benchmark datasets. However, most of the existing abdominal datasets only contain single-center, single-phase, single-vendor, or single-disease cases, and it is unclear whether the excellent performance can generalize on diverse datasets. This paper presents a large and diverse abdominal CT organ segmentation dataset, termed AbdomenCT-1K, with more than 1000 (1K) CT scans from 12 medical centers, including multi-phase, multi-vendor, and multi-disease cases. Furthermore, we conduct a large-scale study for liver, kidney, spleen, and pancreas segmentation and reveal the unsolved segmentation problems of the SOTA methods, such as the limited generalization ability on distinct medical centers, phases, and unseen diseases. To advance the unsolved problems, we further build four organ segmentation benchmarks for fully supervised, semi-supervised, weakly supervised, and continual learning, which are currently challenging and active research topics. Accordingly, we develop a simple and effective method for each benchmark, which can be used as out-of-the-box methods and strong baselines. Accurate and automatic segmentation of three-dimensional (3D) individual teeth from cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) images is a challenging problem because of the difficulty in separating an individual tooth from adjacent teeth and its surrounding alveolar bone. Thus, this paper proposes a fully automated method of identifying and segmenting 3D individual teeth from dental CBCT images. The proposed method addresses the aforementioned difficulty by developing a deep learning-based hierarchical multi-step model. First, it automatically generates upper and lower jaws panoramic images to overcome the computational complexity caused by high-dimensional data and the curse of dimensionality associated with limited training dataset. The obtained 2D panoramic images are then used to identify 2D individual teeth and capture loose- and tight- regions of interest (ROIs) of 3D individual teeth. Finally, accurate 3D individual tooth segmentation is achieved using both loose and tight ROIs. Experimental results showed that the proposed method achieved an F1-score of 93.35 percent for tooth identification and a Dice similarity coefficient of 94.79 percent for individual 3D tooth segmentation. Automatic liver tumor segmentation could offer assistance to radiologists in liver tumor diagnosis, and its performance has been significantly improved by recent deep learning based methods. These methods rely on large-scale well-annotated training datasets, but collecting such datasets is time-consuming and labor-intensive, which could hinder their performance in practical situations. Learning from synthetic data is an encouraging solution to address this problem. In our task, synthetic tumors can be injected to healthy images to form training pairs. However, directly applying the model trained using the synthetic tumor images on real test images performs poorly due to the domain shift problem. In this paper, we propose a novel approach, namely Synthetic-to-Real Test-Time Training (SR-TTT), to reduce the domain gap between synthetic training images and real test images. Specifically, we add a self-supervised auxiliary task, i.e., two-step reconstruction, which takes the output of the main segmentation task as its input to build an explicit connection between these two tasks. Moreover, we design a scheduled mixture strategy to avoid error accumulation and bias explosion in the training process. During test time, we adapt the segmentation model to each test image with self-supervision from the auxiliary task so as to improve the inference performance. The proposed method is extensively evaluated on two public datasets for liver tumor segmentation. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed SR-TTT can effectively mitigate the synthetic-to-real domain shift problem in the liver tumor segmentation task, and is superior to existing state-of-the-art approaches. The deep learning-based automatic recognition of the scanning or exposing region in medical imaging automation is a promising new technique, which can decrease the heavy workload of the radiographers, optimize imaging workflow and improve image quality. However, there is little related research and practice in X-ray imaging. In this paper, we focus on two key problems in X-ray imaging automation: automatic recognition of the exposure moment and the exposure region. Consequently, we propose an automatic video analysis framework based on the hybrid model, approaching real-time performance. The framework consists of three interdependent components: Body Structure Detection, Motion State Tracing, and Body Modeling. Body Structure Detection disassembles the patient to obtain the corresponding body keypoints and body Bboxes. Combining and analyzing the two different types of body structure representations is to obtain rich spatial location information about the patient body structure. Motion State Tracing focuses on the motion state analysis of the exposure region to recognize the appropriate exposure moment. The exposure region is calculated by Body Modeling when the exposure moment appears. A large-scale dataset for X-ray examination scene is built to validate the performance of the proposed method. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method in automatically recognizing the exposure moment and exposure region. In this paper, a new computer-assisted ultrasound probe placement system is introduced to guide paramedics and first responders to conduct abdominal ultrasound imaging for diagnosing trauma patients in emergency situations where specialists are not present. Recently, telesonography has been employed to supervise paramedics by remote experts to perform ultrasound scan for triaging, although its utility is limited by unavailability of fast internet connectivity in remote regions. In the proposed solution of this paper, a paramedic is first instructed to place the ultrasound probe on an initial placement for imaging an organ of interest. Then, a three-dimensional (3-D) ultrasound image is acquired and processed to determine the organ's shape misalignment with respect to a reference alignment. Afterward, the organ's shape misalignment is used to estimate the probe misalignment, and then, a probe placement command is generated to guide the paramedic. This process iterates until a correct organ's view of interest is obtained. As the advantage of the proposed solution over the existing technique, the proposed solution does not require a fast Internet connectivity and a dedicated remote specialist to conduct ultrasound imaging by a paramedic. The utility of the proposed solution is evaluated for a case study on the right upper quadrant (RUQ) view, which has a paramount importance in triaging trauma patients. Photon-counting spectral computed tomography (CT) is capable of material characterization and can improve diagnostic performance over traditional clinical CT. However, it suffers from photon count starving for each individual energy channel which may cause severe artifacts in the reconstructed images. Furthermore, since the images in different energy channels describe the same object, there are high correlations among different channels. To make full use of the inter-channel correlations and minimize the count starving effect while maintaining clinically meaningful texture information, this paper combines a region-specific texture model with a low-rank correlation descriptor as an a priori regularization to explore a superior texture preserving Bayesian reconstruction of spectral CT. Specifically, the inter-channel correlations are characterized by the low-rank representation, and the inner-channel regional textures are modeled by a texture preserving Markov random field. In other words, this paper integrates the spectral and spatial information into a unified Bayesian reconstruction framework. The widely-used Split-Bregman algorithm is employed to minimize the objective function because of the non-differentiable property of the low-rank representation. To evaluate the tissue texture preserving performance of the proposed method for each channel, three references are built for comparison: one is the traditional CT image from energy integration detection. The second one is spectral images from dual-energy CT. The third one is individual channels images from custom-made photon-counting spectral CT. As expected, the proposed method produced promising results in terms of not only preserving texture features but also suppressing image noise in each channel, comparing to existing methods of total variation (TV), low-rank TV and tensor dictionary learning, by both visual inspection and quantitative indexes of root mean square error, peak signal to noise ratio, structural similarity and feature similarity. X-ray computed tomography (CT) using sparse projection views is a recent approach to reduce the radiation dose. However, due to the insufficient projection views, an analytic reconstruction approach using the filtered back projection (FBP) produces severe streaking artifacts. Recently, deep learning approaches using large receptive field neural networks such as U-Net have demonstrated impressive performance for sparse-view CT reconstruction. However, theoretical justification is still lacking. Inspired by the recent theory of deep convolutional framelets, the main goal of this paper is, therefore, to reveal the limitation of U-Net and propose new multi-resolution deep learning schemes. In particular, we show that the alternative U-Net variants such as dual frame and tight frame U-Nets satisfy the so-called frame condition which makes them better for effective recovery of high frequency edges in sparse-view CT. Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) images are often highly degraded by amplified mottle noise and streak artifacts. Maintaining image quality under low-dose scan protocols is a well-known challenge. Recently, sparse representation-based techniques have been shown to be efficient in improving such CT images. In this paper, we propose a 3D feature constrained reconstruction (3D-FCR) algorithm for LDCT image reconstruction. The feature information used in the 3D-FCR algorithm relies on a 3D feature dictionary constructed from available high quality standard-dose CT sample. The CT voxels and the sparse coefficients are sequentially updated using an alternating minimization scheme. The performance of the 3D-FCR algorithm was assessed through experiments conducted on phantom simulation data and clinical data. A comparison with previously reported solutions was also performed. Digital tomosynthesis (DTS) is an X-ray imaging technique that produces cross-sectional images with a scanning motion in narrow angular ranges. This method is promising for the inspection of internal defects in thin slab objects, such as printed circuit boards. However, this limited angular scan approach can have limited resolution in the depth direction. In addition, it can cause ghosting artifacts that originate from other planes in the reconstructed plane. In this paper, we characterized the imaging performance of a DTS method that uses the filtered backprojection for reconstruction. Various imaging parameters were examined, such as the total scan angle and the number of projections used for the reconstruction. We analyzed the signal and noise characteristics of the reconstructed images obtained for a thin tungsten wire and a thin aluminum disc. We obtained in-plane and in-depth modulation transfer functions (MTFs) from the reconstructed wire response images. From the reconstructed disc response images, we calculated the signal difference between the disc region and the adjacent background region along the depth direction, which is called the artifact spread function (ASF). A narrow angular scan enhances the in-plane MTF performance compared to that obtained from the conventional computed tomography, but it degrades the in-depth MTF performance (i.e., it decreases the depth resolution). In addition, the narrow angular scan degrades the ASF performance and causes severe out-of-plane blur artifacts. The optimal scanning angular range is, therefore, required to obtain tomographic images with high spatial resolution and less blur artifacts. Recent advances in computational methods, materials science, and new manufacturing processes are resulting in an unprecedented design flexibility which is driving the geometrical complexity of the components found in modern structures and machines. For safety-critical components, the geometrical complexity poses a significant challenge to the sensitivity of the existing nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods available for the detection of manufacturing defects or damage that develops while a component is in service. Although X-ray computed tomography is the primary NDE method used to test these parts in current industrial practice, it is widely recognized that it has limited sensitivity to critical defects, such as cracks, especially in the presence of large size parts made of dense materials. The lack of sensitive NDE methods represents a major technology gap that could impede the acceptance of rapidly developing technologies, such as 3-D printing, for the production of safety-critical components. This paper attempts to bridge this gap by exploring the possibility of inspecting a complex-shaped part with ultrasonic waves after it has been encapsulated in ice, under the paradigm of what can be defined as cryo-ultrasonic NDE. The underpinning hypothesis is that through ice encapsulation a complex-shaped part can be transformed into a simple-shaped solid whose volume can be probed with ultrasonic waves, which are known to be highly sensitive to both pores and crack-like defects and over a wide range of material properties. Damage detection is then performed by analyzing cross-sectional images of the ice-encapsulated part obtained by applying migration methods to the ultrasonic signals measured by an array of transducers. This paper lays the foundation for cryo-ultrasonic NDE and presents the first experimental results demonstrating the possibility of imaging defects through multiple ice–metal interfaces.
