The uncertain nature of renewable energy resources (RERs) and fast demand response lead to recurring voltage violations in the power systems, which causes frequent transformer tap shifting and capacitor switching. Therefore, this paper resorts to the static var compensators (SVCs) to manage the bus voltages based on the multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MA-DRL) algorithm. The proposed scheme includes several system agents and SVC agents to collaboratively adjust the injected reactive power to restrict the bus voltages within the normal range. All the agents are trained centrally and executed separately, which requires minimum communication cost. The IEEE 14-bus system, IEEE 300-bus system, and China 157-node urban power grid are used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In view of the uncertainty and intermittency of wind power, this paper proposes an optimal economical dispatch (ED) model and develops a method to estimate risk and manage hybrid power systems (traditional + wind~power~systems) for the short-term (24 h) operations. The model and the method have taken into account the large wind power penetration and the wind variability. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) refid="ref1"/ algorithm with constraints is applied to solve the ED problem. Value at risk (VaR) refid="ref2"/ and integrated risk management (IRM) refid="ref3"/ are used separately to assess the risk, so that an optimal tradeoff between the profit and risk is made for the system operations. Due to the geographic features and fruitful water resources, the distributed generation of Small Hydropower Generator Stack (SHGS) are vigorously developed in southwest China. As the more concerns about security and stability of power grids with the large amount of SHGS feed into the grid, the accurate models are critical to analyze those potential impacts. With the development of online monitoring technologies in smart grid, PMU based dynamic equivalent modeling for SHGS drawn many attentions. However, field applications reveal that traditional SHGS equivalent model may not be robustness enough to adapt the different disturbances. To overcome this deficiency, method to improve the robustness of SHGS dynamic equivalent modeling is proposed. In the paper, a coherency identification based multi-machine modeling method is introduced to enhance the accuracy of equivalent model. Sensitivity and correlation analysis based key parameters selection scheme is implemented to select the critical parameters, meanwhile avoiding the multiple solutions problem. Moreover, multi-objective optimization algorithm is designed for key parameters identification of the equivalent model. Additionally, hybrid dynamic simulation has adopted into the equivalent process to improve the computational efficiency. With the advantage of quick response and flexible ramp, energy storage system (ESS) offers a promising capability of fast frequency control for power systems, especially under a severe disturbance. This paper proposes an ESS control strategy using local measurement in order to provide fast frequency support right after a sufficiently severe disturbance is observed. The proposed strategy includes online frequency characteristic estimator and online optimization controller. Distinguished from existing approaches, no prior knowledge of power system model is required in this work, including generator configuration, operation condition, and frequency response of each component. Instead, the overall system frequency characteristic is approximated online by the proposed estimator. Then, the power setpoint of ESS is determined adaptively to participate in frequency control by the proposed model predictive controller. With the increasing demand of electricity, the development of the urban power grid has drawn a lot of attention in China. In order to focus on the analysis of an urban power grid, the remaining part of the large-scale power grid used is to be reduced. The accuracy of the equivalence is key to urban power grid research. In this paper, a multistep dynamic equivalent method based on district dividing is proposed. Based on the electrical distance, voltage level, and geographic location, the external system is divided into outer layer, inner layer, and buffer subsystem. To make better use of local generators' dynamic var reserve to improve short-term voltage stability (STVS), this paper proposes an integrated high side var-voltage control (IHSV^2C) for power plants in receiving-end power systems. The IHSV^2C consists of a plant-level multi-machine var coordinator (MMVC) and several unit-level high side voltage controllers (HSVCs). MMVC coordinates the reactive power output among generators and provides control parameters for HSVCs, while HSVCs can maintain the voltage of a pre-defined voltage control point (VCP) by regulating the voltage reference of the excitation control of each generator. Therefore, when the system suffers a serious fault, IHSV^2C can drive the generators to provide stronger var support. Consequently, the voltage stability can be improved. A conceptual model of the receiving-end power system in China Southern Power Grid (CSG) is established, and the IHSV^2C has been validated through a simulation analysis on the system. Both time-domain simulation results and the voltage sag severity index (VSSI) have fully demonstrated its performance. Due to the uneven geographical distribution between load and wind power, currently it is difficult to integrate the large-scale wind power into the State Grid in China. There are significant wind curtailments for wind farms due to system restrictions. This paper proposes a new way of utilizing wind power, i.e., in-situ consumption, as an alternative to the costly development of long-distance transmission of large-scale wind power. Electrolytic aluminum load, which is one of the most typical high energy consuming loads, is employed to absorb the excess wind power in western China. An actual isolated industrial power system for aluminum production driven by wind power and coal-fired power is described. The penetration level of wind power in the isolated power system is up to 48.8%. The power imbalance between generation and load demand caused by wind power fluctuation or the tripping of coal-fired generators can dramatically impact the frequency stability of the isolated power system, which is of small inertia. An online identification method of power imbalance based on Wide Area Measurement System (WAMS) is presented. According to the characteristics of the electrolytic aluminum load, a system frequency control method by regulating the bus voltages of aluminum loads to eliminate the power imbalance is introduced. Recently, sustained power oscillation at subsynchronous frequency was captured in direct-drive permanent magnetic synchronous generator (PMSG) based wind farms in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. This new type of subsynchronous interaction (SSI) detected in practical systems has never been reported and analyzed before. Therefore, its mechanism and characteristics are not yet clearly clarified. In this paper, a simplified but representative system model with multiple PMSGs interfaced with AC networks is established first based on the actual system and the PMSG model provided by the manufacturer. Then, small-signal eigenanalysis, time-domain simulation, and impedance model analysis are carried out to investigate the interactive dynamics between them. The results show that such interaction between direct-drive PMSG wind farms and weak ac grids characterized by low short-circuit ratio would cause negative-resistance effect for the SSI mode, leading to unstable oscillation. In such cases, the controller of PMSG would saturate soon, resulting in sustained power oscillation in the system. If unfortunately the oscillation frequency matches the torsional mode of any nearby turbogenerator, severe torsional vibration would be excited on the shaft of the latter. The analysis results are finally validated with field measurements of an actual SSI event. To address the problem, a supplementary subsynchronous damping control loop is attached to the controllers of PMSGs to reshape the impedance and thus to stabilize the SSI. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

In this study, a locally weighted linear regression (LWLR) method is proposed to predict damping ratio of a dominant mode online. The LWLR method, which is nonparametric and data-oriented, is essentially proposed for nonlinear data fitting; therefore, it can track the nonlinear power system operations and help damping ratio prediction in real power systems, which is hardly achieved by the conventional linear regression. To successfully implement this method, the measurement of weighting value and the choice of weighting function as well as its parameter setting, related to prediction accuracy and numerical conditions, are extensively discussed. The power industry in China has grown significantly over the past decade, spurring the adoption of system-wide automatic voltage control (AVC) technology to meet stricter requirements for security and economical power system operation. To cope with the rapidly developing and frequently changing Chinese power grid, an AVC scheme based on adaptive zone division is introduced in this paper. Logically, this type of system has a three-level hierarchical structure, but, here, both secondary voltage control (SVC) and tertiary voltage control (TVC) are implemented via software at the same control center. The control zones are no longer fixed but are reconfigured online and updated in accordance with variations in the grid structure. The technical details of these procedures are presented here. The implementation of TVC (which is based on an online reactive optimal power flow) and SVC are also discussed, together with some technical details on improvements to their reliability and robustness. Some results obtained from field-site applications based on similar-days testing rather than simulations are employed to evaluate the performance and improvements of the AVC system. The Shangdu power plant has four 600-MW turbine-generators connected to the North-China Grid through two 500-kV transmissions, which are compensated with 45% fixed series capacitors. Extensive studies conducted on the system model indicate that the system suffers from multimodal subsynchronous resonance (SSR). To solve the problem, a countermeasure is developed by combining the supplementary excitation damping control (SEDC) and the torsional stress relay (TSR). In this paper, the characteristics of the SSR problem are investigated. Then the developed SEDC is presented. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed SEDC as well as the results of model studies, field tests were conducted under various operating conditions. The tests fully exposed the realistic threat of SSR in the system. Meanwhile, it is demonstrated that the developed SEDC can improve torsional damping significantly, and thus solve the multimodal SSR problem effectively. This is the first time in China that practical SEDCs have been developed and their ability to mitigate multimodal SSR has been verified in a real series-compensated system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to the maturity of wide area measurement technology, phasor measurement unit (PMU)-based dynamic equivalent modeling method (PDM) has been wildly used in large-scale power system modeling. However, traditional “event-based” PDM equivalent model may face serious robustness issues, such as although derived equivalent models show the good ability on reproduction of the system behaviors under recorded events where they derived from, they may not work well for other possible disturbances. In this article, to improve the robustness of equivalent model, a novel method on dynamic equivalent modeling of power system is proposed. Based on the result of coherency identification, generators inside the equivalent system can be aggregated into different coherent subgroups and represented by multimachine equivalent model. Key parameter selection, which can shrink the scale of identified parameters, is designed to avoid multiple solutions of the equivalent model. Moreover, a multiobjective parameter identification algorithm is developed to fully consider the PMU measurements in different system events. In addition, hybrid dynamic simulation is performed so that each equivalent submodel can be identified separately. GIS (gas-insulated metal-enclosed switchgear) is one of the important components in modern electrical power systems. Compared with traditional open switching devices, GIS has many advantages such as compact structure, smaller occupied area, little influence from environment as well as safe and reliable operation [1–3]. Statistical data show that equipment failure rate of GIS is only 20%–40% of traditional open switching devices. However, as GIS is designed as a fully enclosed structure, once something goes wrong, the diagnosis process is much more complex and the time necessary for fault repair becomes much longer [4–5]. For instance, a severe short circuit fault occurred in Jiangsu Power Grid, China in 2014 due to the development of cracks on a disc insulator. In the same year, abnormal discharges occurred in GIS substations because of a disconnector fault that led to large economic loss and undesired social impacts. This letter proposes a novel method to solve the environmental/economic dispatch (EED) problem with DC power flow constraints. A parameterized KKT condition is introduced to characterize the Pareto front. Then Nash's bargain criterion is employed to determine a compromise solution on the Pareto front.
