Abstract

The promise of good energy and spatial resolution coupled with high efficiency and room temperature operation has fuelled a large international effort to develop cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) for hard X-ray applications. We are involved on the development of a hard X-ray telescope based on multilayer optics and focal plane detector operative in the 10-80 keV energy range. This telescope requires a high efficiency focal plane providing both fine spatial resolution and spectroscopy with a compact and robust design. This paper reports preliminary results on the characterization both in spectroscopic and spatial response of two small pixellated CZT detectors (10times10times1 mm3 and 10times10times2 mm3 single crystals) with 0.45 mm pixel size. Abstract

We report on the development and of a complete X/γ rays detection system (10-1000 keV) based on CZT spectrometers with spatial resolution in three dimensions (3D) and a digital electronics acquisition chain. The prototype is made by packing four linear modules, each composed of one 3D CZT sensors. Each sensors is realized using a single spectroscopic graded CZT crystal of about 20×20×5 mm3. An electrode structure consisting of 12 collecting anodes with a pitch of 1.6 mm and 3 drift strips between each pair of anodes for 48 strips (0.15 mm wide) on the anodic side was adopted. The cathode is made of 10 strips with a pitch of 2 mm and orthogonal to anode side strips. Since the reading of the drift strips will carried out by putting in parallel all the strips that occupy the same place with respect to a collecting anode, the channels number for each sensors is only 25. The detector readout front-is based on custom designed low noise charge sensitive pre-amplifiers (CSP) implemented in hybrid 16 channels board. The CZT module and its CSP front-end provide the signals to a multichannel Digital Pulse Processing FPGA based system able to digitize and process continuously the signals. The digital system implement an innovative firmware that allow performing fine time-tagging, online pulse shape and height analysis with good energy resolution.

Abstract

The National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) is supporting the 3CaTS project with the aim of developing a new Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) system for real time 10 B therapeutic dose monitoring in the binary experimental hadron therapy called Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). BNCT is a highly selective tumour treatment based on the neutron capture reaction 10 B(n,α) 7 Li. The secondary particles have a high LET with ranges in tissues of the order of 10 μm (thus less than the mean cell diameter of few tens μm). Targeting the 10 B delivery towards cancer, the released energy lethally damages only the malignant cells sparing the normal tissues, thus enabling a cell-level selective treatment. To properly exploit this selectivity it is mandatory to know the 10 B spatial distribution inside patients body during neutron irradiation. This can be achieved by detecting the 478 keV γ ray emitted in the 94% of 10 B capture reactions by a SPECT system. A 3D CZT drift strip detector with a sensitive volume of 20x20x5 mm 3 was developed, able to perform high-resolution X-ray and γ ray spectroscopic imaging (10-1000 keV). Abstract

Today, the measurement of the polarization status of cosmic sources high-energy' emission, is recognized as a key observational parameter to understand the active production mechanism and its geometry. Therefore, a mandatory requirement for new instrumentations operating in this energ.-y range will be to provide high sensitivity for polarimetric measurements. In this framework, we have presented the concept of a small high-performance imaging spectrometer optimized for polarimetry between 100 and 600 keV suitable for a stratospheric balloon-borne payload and as a pathfinder for a future satellite mission. The detector with 3D spatial resolution is based on a CZT spectrometer in a highly segmented configuration designed to operate simultaneously as a high performance scattering polarimeter. Herein, we report results of a Monte Carlo study devoted to optimize the configuration of the detector for polarimetry with particular focus on event selection filter able to increase the polarimetric performance. This preliminary analysis shows that a procedure to optimize the polarization response of a 3D spectrometers should first of all determine the best tradeoff between the statistical significance and the quality of the modulation factor.

Abstract

In this work, we report on the characteristics of the Livio Scarsi X-ray facility at University of Palermo. The facility is able to produce low energy X rays, within the energy range of 0.1-60 keV, with fluence rates ranging from 105-108 photons/mm2 s. The laboratory is equipped with an innovative digital detection system, based on semiconductor detectors (Si and CdTe detectors), able to provide accurate and precise estimation of the fluence rate, the energy and the exposure of X rays, even at high counting rate conditions. Instrumentation for electrical characterization (DC-AC) of semiconductor devices, for both off-line and on-line (i.e. during the irradiation) measurements, is also available. Total ionizing dose (TID) tests on rad-hard power MOSFET transistors by using both X rays and 60Co gamma rays are presented. The aim of this work is to open up to potential users for low energy X-ray applications.

Abstract

In the last decades, great efforts are being devoted to the development of CdTe detectors for high resolution X-ray and gamma ray spectroscopy. Recently, new rectifying contacts based on aluminum (Al) are very appealing in the development of CdTe detectors with low leakage currents and anode pixellization. In this work, we report on preliminary results of electrical and spectroscopic investigations on Schottky CdTe diode detectors (4.1 × 4.1 × 0.75 and 4.1 × 4.1 × 2 mm3) with Au/Ti/Al/CdTe/Pt electrode configuration. The detectors are characterized by very low leakage currents even at room temperature (26 pA at 25 °C under a bias voltage of −100 V for the 2 mm thick detector). Polarization phenomena, typical of CdTe diode detectors, were investigated through electrical and spectroscopic approaches, pointing out the influence of the bias voltage, the temperature and the detector thickness. Good time stability, during a short-term operation of one hour, was observed for both detectors at temperatures below 10 °C and by using an electric field of 5000 V/cm. The detectors exhibited good energy resolution of 1.5 keV (FWHM) at 59.5 keV (T=−25 °C) by using a standard electronic chain. This work was carried out in the framework of the development of portable X-ray spectrometers for both laboratory research and medical applications.

Abstract

The scientific objectives of the future X-ray astronomy instruments require new type of focusing telescopes able to extend the observational range starting from 0.1 keV at least up to 100 keV to solve crucial question concerning the nature of the high energy emission. A challenging technology to extend the classical grazing incidence range to higher energy is today offered by the development of multilayer optics that are effective as X-ray concentrators between few keV up to 100 keV. A useful arrangement for this type of mission concept can foresee the soft (e.g. 0.1-10 keV) X-ray optics nested and coaxial with the hard-X mirrors. The focal plane of the telescope shall operate on a very wide band (from 0.1 to 100 keV) fulfilling at the best the different requirements of the two optics type in terms of detection efficiency, spatial resolution and spectroscopic performance. A solution for this kind of focal plane detector is given by a hybrid system with a soft X ray detector (e.g. CCD) in front and coaxial to a hard-X ray detector (e.g. Pixel CZT spectrometer). We have assembled a hybrid detector prototype using as soft X-ray detector a spare CMOS CDD22 of the EPIC/XMM instrument developed at Leicester University operating in the energy range of 0.2-10 keV and a CZT small pixel detector, capable of sensing X-rays or gamma rays in the energy range from 10 keV to 1.5 MeV. The MOS CCD22 is made of a p-type epitaxial silicon layer with a 40 μm square pixel, thickness of 80 μm and active area of 2.5x2.5 cm2. The substrate is 200 μm thick. The CZT sensor is a 4×4 multipixel paired with a 16 channel ASIC manufactured by eV Products. The thickness of the detector is 5 mm, while the lateral dimensions are 10.6×10.6 mm 2. The pixel size is 1.8 × 1.8 mm2 with a pitch of 2 mm. We report on the results of experimental measurements obtained with this hybrid detector prototype carried out at Leicester University.
