This study presents an examination of partial discharge (PD) localization in oil based on acoustic emission technique utilizing fuzzy logic. First, the PD measurement and localization systems are developed. In total, 2 coordinates of needle-plane electrodes that represent the PD location and 336 acoustic emission sensor (AES) coordinates are examined. The electrical PD is measured through an impedance matching circuit (IMC). The acoustic PD is acquired through AES and its signal is boosted by a preamplifier gain unit. The acoustic and electrical PDs are collected once the voltage reaches 30 kV. The data are first preprocessed by discrete wavelet transform (DWT) whereby it will be further analyzed by time of arrival (TOA), fuzzy logic Mamdani (FLM), and fuzzy logic Takagi–Sugeno (FLTS) methods. The arrival of time and distance between PD and AES are calculated based on TOA to find the PD location. Next, TOA and distance to PD location are used to define the input and output membership functions for FLM and FLTS to determine the PD location. It is found that FLTS has a great potential to be used for localization of the PD in oil whereby it has the lowest errors between actual PD location and AES. The performance of FLM and TOA is inferior to FLTS whereby the errors between actual PD location and AES are quite high for both PD locations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Insulation systems of electrical apparatus (fluid and solid) include transformer oil, insulating paper, glass, ceramic, mica and rubber. Normally, they are designed well to be stable at high temperatures and provide excellent electrical insulating properties in different operating loads. There is an increasing demand to modify the effectiveness and capabilities of these insulation systems to overcome various issues (e.g., overheating, overloading and short circuits). Moreover, they should match the new high voltage insulation requirements, safety, ultra-high voltage, and being environmentally friendly are some of them. Nanoparticles (NPs) are promising compensator materials that can be used to develop insulation systems with good thermophysical and dielectric properties. The results of many studies show marvelous enhancements in electrical and thermal properties. In this paper, the authors present a review that focuses on different NPs that are used in several aspects of insulation systems to improve the dielectric as well as the heat transfer properties of high voltage insulation applications. The review covers NPs types, the preparation methods, analysis approaches, different properties, performances and results, challenges, and the limitation of the use of NPs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Blending of palm-based ester can effectively increase the flash point and thermal-oxidative stability of mineral transformer oil especially in the event of high loading and high temperature. Inversely, owing to the excellent dielectric properties of mineral oil, the dielectric properties of the esters can also be improved. Thus, high oleic palm-based trimethylolpropane (TMP) ester was blended and homogenized with 20 to 50 % of mineral oil, and the physico-chemical and electrical properties of each base fluid was compared with that of pure TMP ester and pure mineral oil. The samples were also subjected to oxidative stability test conducted at 95°C for 500 hours, with the presence of water, oxygen and copper/steel catalyst. During ester and mineral oil degradations, the oxidized oils take on dark brown color with the increase in oxidation products concentration and the sludge formation due to the reaction between the oil and the metal catalyst. XRF measurements performed on the samples showed an increase in iron and sulfur contents, which can be explained by the formation of superficial surface layer of iron (II) sulfide or ferrous sulfide. From the investigations, it was found that the 80/20 of ester/mineral oil blending sample have properties near to the standard values for transformer liquid insulation; thus, it can potentially replace traditional mineral oil as an alternate liquid insulation. Lightning-related outages are of great concern for power utility companies especially in the tropical regions. Tenaga Nasional Berhad as the system operator in Malaysia realized the importance of this issue. In this paper, statistical information on transmission line outages, together with lightning stroke data, are presented. Lightning data were obtained from TNB Lightning Detection Network which generates lightning density map and other information, such as peak current, polarity, and location of the detected strokes with 500-m location accuracy. A case study on the 500 kV A-to-B line represents statistical information of collected strokes where 18 kA and 14 kA were reported as median values of current peak for negative and positive strokes, respectively. Mean values are 22 kA for negative strokes and 17 kA for positive strokes. About 93% of 658 619 collected strokes from 2004 to 2015 are negative whereas the remaining are positive. A total of 582 (90%) negative strokes and 65 (10%) positive strokes were recorded along a selected case line where 83% of outages were reported to occur on the top phase. Lightning stroke density, terrain characteristics, tower footing resistance, and monsoon activities were highlighted as contributing factors on line performance due to lightning in this study. The potential of palm-based neopentyl glycol diester as dielectric insulating fluid was investigated. The details of the transesterification of high oleic palm oil methyl ester (POME) with neopentyl glycol (NPG) with the final product yield of more than 90 wt% of NPG diester were discussed. The thermal aging performance of NPG diester was compared with conventional mineral insulating oil at 90, 110 and 130 °C. This paper focused mainly in the effects of aging to chemical, physical and electrical properties of NPG diester. Apart from being fully biodegradable and non-toxic, the synthesized diesters exhibited high flashpoint and the breakdown voltage was comparable to mineral oil. The result indicated that throughout the aging period, NPG diester exhibited lower acid value than mineral oil and no significant change in viscosity was observed. The study on mechanical properties of insulating paper aged in NPG diester shows higher tensile strength than paper aged in mineral oil.
