This article presents a method for the computation of the incremental inductances in a 12/10 variable flux reluctance machine (VFRM) using the hybrid analytical modeling coupled with a fixed-point nonlinear solver. The variation of incremental and apparent inductance with respect to the dc-field excitation is investigated for both zero and non-zero ac-field excitations. The results show that the difference between both inductance values is not negligible after 25 A/mm2 dc-current density for the investigated benchmark without the ac field. Moreover, when a non-zero ac field is introduced in addition to the dc-field, the apparent inductance becomes misleading not only under magnetic saturation but also under low excitation in the linear region of the saturation curve. The results obtained with the proposed nonlinear hybrid model are compared with the finite element method in terms of magnetic flux density distribution and incremental inductance value. The root-mean-square discrepancy of magnetic flux density distribution is found to be 37.6 mT. Furthermore, the discrepancy between incremental inductance results of the proposed method and the finite element model is calculated as 1.43%, while the proposed approach requires less post-processing and necessitates ten times less number of degrees-of-freedom. Variable flux reluctance machines (VFRMs) are interesting candidates to substitute permanent-magnet synchronous machines in many applications. However, they suffer from large torque ripple. In this paper two methods, stepped rotor skewing and rotor teeth non-uniformity, are researched to reduce the torque ripple of 12/10 (stator/rotor-pole ratio) VFRMs. Based on semi-analytic results and finite-element simulations, the effectiveness of these two methods is validated in both non-saturated and saturated machines. The 3-D modeling technique presented in this paper, predicts, with high accuracy, electromagnetic fields and corresponding dynamic effects in conducting regions for rotating machines with slotless windings, e.g., self-supporting windings. The presented modeling approach can be applied to a wide variety of slotless winding configurations, including skewing and/or different winding shapes. It is capable to account for induced eddy currents in the conductive rotor parts, e.g., permanent-magnet (PM) eddy-current losses, albeit not iron, and winding ac losses. The specific focus of this paper is to provide the reader with the complete implementation and assumptions details of such a 3-D semianalytical approach, which allows model validations with relatively short calculation times. This model can be used to improve future design optimizations for machines with 3-D slotless windings. Helical windings (or zigzag windings) are used in a number of applications, however, in electrical machines, mainly employed in low-power, high-speed permanent magnet (PM) brushless dc machines due to the cost effectiveness of the winding type while maintaining reasonable performance. Typically, helical windings are used for low-voltage applications due to their spiral form, which makes them most suitable for a small number of turns. In high-speed electrical machines, such a low number of turns are applicable. It is apparent that high-speed PM machines suffer from rotor eddy-current losses, which in some cases may lead to PM demagnetization due to overheating. The performance of the machine is compromised by these losses; hence, they have to be considered during the design procedure. There are many papers analyzing the magnetic field of these machines employing helical windings; however, none of them present a simple and precise electromagnetic model of a machine with the helical winding. This paper presents an analytical approach to model the resulting 3-D magnetic field of the helical winding, considering eddy currents in the conducting media of the rotor. High-speed permanent magnet machines, supplied by pulsewidth modulation (PWM) voltage source inverters, operate with distorted stator currents. Harmonics present in these stator currents deteriorate the machine performance by generating losses. Mostly, these losses are following the machine design using a transient finite-element model. The precise measurement of these rotor eddy-current losses is extremely difficult, hence, only a few papers provide convincing comparisons between predictions and measurements. This paper presents a fast and precise analytical approach, verified with measurements, to consider rotor losses of machines, supplied by PWM voltages, already during the design procedure. A widely used method for the magnetic field calculation in permanent magnet (PM) machines is the harmonic modeling (HM) method. Despite its many advantages, the application of this method is limited to machines in which armature currents, as a source of the magnetic field, are known. Since most of the PM machines are supplied with three-phase voltages, any variation of parameters in the armature electric circuit could lead to the uncertainty in knowing the armature currents, and therefore, limit use of the HM method. In this paper, an approach for overcoming this limitation is presented, which enables the calculation of the magnetic field in the PM machines without a priori knowledge of the armature currents.
