The numerous benefits of creating, collecting, and using information from electrical incident case histories to aid in the prevention of future incidents and improve electrical safety programs are covered in this article. Methods for preparing and presenting case history information is outlined to serve as a reference for others in creating value for this type of information within various companies and organizations. The Petroleum and Chemical Industry Committee (PCIC) has evolved into a leadership role in the IAS and the IEEE for industrial electrical safety measures. PCIC has accelerated progress in standards, regulations, product designs, work practices, and perhaps, more importantly, how to eliminate electrical injuries. In developing this article, the authors conducted surveys, reviewed historical documents, and interviewed long-time PCIC members in an attempt to document the evolution and impact, the organization has had on electrical safety. One of the goal of this article is to provide comprehensive bibliography and appendices that may be useful in developing further improvements and contributions to electrical safety. The IAS Electrical Safety Workshop has three components in its mission: accelerate the application of breakthrough improvements in human factors, technology, and managing systems that reduce the risk of electrical injuries; stimulate innovation in overcoming barriers; and change and advance the electrical safety culture to enable sustainable improvements in the prevention of electrical accidents and injuries. Using a corporate case study with data analysis, this article provides an example of how one company recognized the limitations of available electrical accident data and implemented a process for collecting information to support the improvement of the organizational culture and management systems around electrical safety. The business, manufacturing, engineering, behavioral safety, and regulatory compliance implications of the findings are discussed.
