Abstract

Heart failure (HF) is the most rapidly growing cardiovascular condition with an estimated prevalence of >37.7 million individuals globally. HF is associated with increased mortality and morbidity and confers a substantial burden, in terms of cost and quality of life, for the individuals and the healthcare systems, highlighting thus the need for early and accurate diagnosis of HF. The accuracy of HF diagnosis, severity estimation, and prediction of adverse events has improved by the utilization of blood tests measuring biomarkers. The contribution of biomarkers for HF management is intensified by the fact that they can be measured in short time at the point-of-care. This is allowed by the development of portable analytical devices, commonly known as point-of-care testing (POCT) devices, which exploit the advancements in the area of microfluidics and nanotechnology. The aim of this review paper is to present a review of POCT devices used for the measurement of biomarkers facilitating decision making when managing HF patients. The devices are either commercially available or in the form of prototypes under development. Both blood and saliva samples are considered. The challenges concerning the implementation of POCT devices and the barriers for their adoption in clinical practice are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

18. A Highly Sensitive Miniaturized Impedimetric Perchlorate Chemical Sensor.

Abstract

In this paper, we have developed a miniaturized a chemical sensor based on a new nanostructured Co-phthalocyanine (Co(II)Pc-PAA) derivative functionalized Au microelectrodes for perchlorate ClO−4 detection. The morphological properties of the sensitive layer have been characterized by contact angle measurement. The response of the obtained sensor-based CoPc/Au microelectrodes has been investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. The experimental impedance data of the sensor device were analyzed by an equivalent electrical circuit using a modified Randles model for better understanding the phenomena present at the sensing membrane/electrolyte interface. Therefore, under optimized working conditions in terms of polarization and frequency, best performances have been achieved when compared with those obtained in the literature for Au electrodes-based devices functionalized with the same molecule. The present chemical sensor has provided a lower detection limit (17.3 pM), the lowest achieved until now to our knowledge, with a larger linear range from 1.73 10−11 to 10−1 M. The selectivity of the sensor has been also studied by evaluating the response towards ClO−4 with other interfering anions. The measurement were stable after ten days of the chemical sensor storage at room temperature. This is very promising for environmental application using rapid analyses and low-cost chemical sensors. Abstract

Nowadays, handling of biological objects at the single-cell level is one of the most active and important research fields. To achieve this goal dimensions of the required tools must roughly match those of the bioparticles at issue, usually ranging from 1 to 100 /spl mu/m. The objective of this paper consists of presenting a microsystem designed for particle microhandling. Some results with polystyrene microspheres are also presented. The operating principle of the aforementioned microsystem hinges upon dielectrophoresis (DEP), which is defined as the lateral motion of electrically neutral matter under the influence of non-uniform electric fields. In practice, the device was fabricated on a silicon substrate onto which interdigitated castellated microelectrodes made of platinum were patterned by lift-off. Moreover, the substrate was micromachined utilising TMAH to anisotropically etch the silicon wafer. Microchamber walls were patterned by PDMS, a photocurable resin which allows a constant sample volume when performing the experiments.
