In this paper, we bridge the gap between visualization and musicology by focusing on rhythm analysis tasks, which are tedious due to the complex visual encoding of the well-established Common Music Notation (CMN). Instead of replacing the CMN, we augment sheet music with rhythmic fingerprints to mitigate the complexity originating from the simultaneous encoding of musical features. The proposed visual design exploits music theory concepts such as the rhythm tree to facilitate the understanding of rhythmic information. Juxtaposing sheet music and the rhythmic fingerprints maintains the connection to the familiar representation. To investigate the usefulness of the rhythmic fingerprint design for identifying and comparing rhythmic patterns, we conducted a controlled user study with four experts and four novices. This paper presents a visualization technique for cross-linguistic error analysis in large learner corpora. H-Matrix combines a matrix, which is commonly used by linguists to investigate cross-linguistic patterns, with a tree diagram to aggregate and interactively re-weight the importance of matrix rows to create custom investigative views. Our technique can help experts to perform data operations, such as, feature aggregation, filtering, ordering and language comparison interactively without having to reprocess the data. H-Matrix dynamically links the high-level multi-language overview to the extracted textual examples, and a reading view where linguists can see the detected features in context, confirm and generate hypotheses.

We present LTMA, a Layered Topic Matching approach for the unsupervised comparative analysis of topic modeling results. Due to the vast number of available modeling algorithms, an efficient and effective comparison of their results is detrimental to a data- and task-driven selection of a model. LTMA automates this comparative analysis by providing topic matching based on two layers (document-overlap and keywordsimilarity), creating a novel topic-match data structure. This data structure builds a basis for model exploration and optimization, thus, allowing for an efficient evaluation of their performance in the context of a given type of text data and task. This is especially important for text types where an annotated gold standard dataset is not readily available and, therefore, quantitative evaluation methods are not applicable. We confirm the usefulness of our technique based on three use cases, namely: (1) the automatic comparative evaluation of topic models, (2) the visual exploration of topic modeling differences, and (3) the optimization of topic modeling results through combining matches. published
