24. Robust Power Sharing between Dual Active Bridges to Improve a DC Microgrid's Stability

Abstract

The dual active bridge (DAB) is one of the key elements in different DC microgrid clusters. DAB also has isolation features and bi-directional power transfer capabilities between two power buses of similar or different levels, i.e. low voltage and high voltage buses. Due to the galvanic isolation and modularity nature of DAB, the output can be easily interconnected for efficient and reliable power sharing. In this paper, this advantage of modularity is applied in microgrid applications. A robust bi-directional power sharing control strategy is developed between DABs from different high voltage buses to low voltage buses in order to improve the voltage stability of the microgrid. The designed controller considering the non-linearity and uncertainty ensures stable DC bus voltage and reliable power sharing among DABs under different operating conditions.

Abstract

The effect of thermal aging on Nomex-paper-based vacuum pressure impregnation (VPI) insulation is reported in this article. The frequency-dependent dielectric loss of Nomex-paper-based VPI dry insulation is affected after significant thermal aging. This variation in dielectric loss of the insulation maintains a good correlation with the duration of thermal aging. A new parameter sensitive to the severity of thermal aging is also introduced. To identify the parameter, the excitation voltage waveform and the corresponding insulation response at a given frequency are required. Determining the parameter does not require denoising of recorded waveforms, reducing the overall computational burden. Based on the newly introduced parameter, a cost-effective method is proposed to predict the dielectric loss and degree of polymerization (DP) in a thermally aged VPI-type dry insulation. The proposed method employs the intermediate frequency range and hence does not require time-consuming low-frequency measurements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

© 2019 IEEE. The power system is inherently a complex nonlinear system and experiences continuous changes in operating conditions due to sudden variations in load demand. The increasing integration of renewable power sources in current grids brings new dynamics and increases complexity in developing reliable control strategies. In addition, the variability of renewable generation introduce uncertainty and therefore, an advanced controller is required to ensure the systems stability. The wide area measurement systems (WAMS) has made the remote signal much readily available, thus improving the overall systems observability. With considering the changing systems dynamics, an output feedback model reference adaptive damping controller is designed and implemented in this paper. The results show the controllers effectiveness to handle the parametric and nonparametric uncertainties of the system while obtaining satisfactory damping action on inter-area oscillations.
