Dr. Robert W. Lucky, IEEE Communications Society's fourth President, passed away at his home in Fair Haven, New Jersey on March 10, 2022. Bob does not need any introduction as most ComSoc members know Bob through his numerous keynote speeches and writings in his Reflections column in IEEE Spectrum. Computer industry pioneer and visionary cofounder (with his wife Adelle Tomash) of the Charles Babbage Foundation (CBF) and the Charles Babbage Institute (CBI), Erwin Tomash passed away on 10 December 2012. In the late 1940s, Tomash was an engineer at Engineering Research Associates (ERA), one of two firms that launched the US computer industry. He later founded and led Dataproducts Corporation, a Fortune 500 computer peripherals and core memory firm. Erwin and Adelle Tomash's insights and generosity in founding, supporting, and advising CBF and CBI have had a profound and continuing impact on the infrastructure for research and publication of scholarship on computer and software history. On July 31, 2012, Jack Salz, one of the iconic figures of the golden age of communication theory and of voiceband, optical and wireless communication, passed away in New Jersey at the age of 82. Jack was renowned and remains beloved among members of the communications engineering community for his colorful and dynamic character, his mentoring and encouragement of many of the most respected names in the communications field, his critical and brilliant contributions to some of the most important technical breakthroughs of recent decades, and his love of life in all its fullness and pleasures. His enthusiasm for classical music took him often to symphony concerts in New York and summer festivals such as the Marlboro Festival in southern Vermont. He was loyal and generous to his friends and prot?g?s, who experienced him as an exceptionally large and important influence on their lives. It is painful to many of us that Jack did not receive the major recognitions and awards that should have come his way for the great value of his contributions, imbedded in the communications infrastructure we enjoy today. Bob Barker, a strong proponent of high power microwave (HPM) research and education, passed away on December 15, 2013 at the age of 64. Dr. George Heilmeier, one of the most influential technology leaders of our era, passed away on April 21 in Plano, Texas at the age of 77. The cause of death was attributed to complications arising from Alzheimer's disease. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

David Samuel Notkin, whose technical, educational, and social contributions to computer science and software engineering research made him a major figure in the field, died on 22 April 2013, at his home in Seattle, Washington. He was 58 years old. The cause of his death was cancer. David is best known for his research, with his many graduate students, on software evolution. He asked why software is often so hard and expensive to change, and he worked to reduce the difficulty of software evolution to an essential minimum. This focus came from his belief that the ability to change software - its softness - is where its true but under-realized potential resides. He asked questions such as whether we can identify and close the gap between Brooks' notions of accidental and essential software complexity? How much should rather than does it cost to develop, test, and evolve software? Can we make the cost of change proportionate rather than disproportionate to the apparent complexity of changes to be made? Can we design software analysis methods that realize the best properties of both static and dynamic analysis techniques? Beyond technical contributions, David is widely recognized and admired for his exceptional skill as a research mentor for graduate students and as a powerful and unwavering advocate for improving gender diversity in computer science. As IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Vice-President of Publications Dick Volz played a fundamental role in the conception of the IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering. Dr. Richard Marshall died at his home in Austin, Texas, in August 2012. He was a pioneer in developing the science and technology of electromagnetic railguns. His seminal research at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra, Australia, set a world record in launching an intact projectile to almost 6 km/s. It was the first demonstration of achieving hypervelocities by any type of electromagnetic launcher and laid the groundwork for a broad range of research in pulsed electromagnetic power and hypervelocity physics. Dick had broad and eclectic scientific interests, but he was a focused, driven practical engineer who wanted more than anything else for his ideas to be understood and implemented for the benefit of mankind. Paul Baran was born in Grodno, Poland (which is now in Belarus) on April 29, 1926. He was the youngest of three children in a Jewish family, with the Polish given name Pesach. His family moved to the United States on May 11, 1928, settling in Boston and later in Philadelphia, where his father, Morris ?Moshe? Baran (1884?1979), opened a grocery store. Paul graduated from Drexel University in 1949 (then called Drexel Institute of Technology) with a degree in electrical engineering, and received an M.S. in engineering from the University of California in 1959, and honorary doctorates from Drexel University in 1997 and the RAND Graduate School in 2000. Watts Humphrey, one of the true pioneers of the software engineering discipline, passed away this past October. The IEEE Communications Society notes with deep regret the death of our respected col- league, W. David Sincoskie, who passed away on October 20, 2010 at age 55. An IEEE Fellow and a Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, Dave was a major contributor to computer communications, and in particular to packet transmission of data, voice and video media in local area networks and the Internet. He worked for many years at Bell Labs and Bellcore (later Telcordia) before becoming, in 2008, a full Professor and founding Director of the Center for Information and Communica- tions Sciences at the University of Delaware.
