The use of mechanically representative phantoms is important for experimental validation in ultrasound (US) imaging, elastography, and image registration. This article proposes a model to predict the elastic modulus of a soft tissue-mimicking phantom based on two very easily controllable parameters: gelatin concentration and refrigeration duration. The model has been validated on small- and large-scale phantoms; it provides a good prediction of the elastic modulus in both cases (error < 16.2%). The tissue-mimicking phantom is made following a low-cost and simple fabrication procedure using commercial household gelatin with psyllium hydrophilic mucilloid fiber to obtain echogenicity. A large range of elastic properties was obtained (15–100kPa) by adjusting the gelatin concentration between 5% and 20% (g/mL) and the refrigeration time of the sample between 2 and 168 h, allowing to mimic normal and pathological human soft tissues. To date, developing geometrically personalized and detailed solid finite-element models (FEMs) of the spine remains a challenge, notably due to multiple articulations and complex geometries. To answer this problem, a methodology based on a free-form deformation technique (kriging) was developed to deform a detailed reference finite-element mesh of the spine (including discs and ligaments) to the patient-specific geometry of 10- and 82-year-old asymptomatic spines. Different kriging configurations were tested: with or without smoothing, and control points on or surrounding the entire mesh. Based on the results, it is recommended to use surrounding control points and smoothing. The mean node to surface distance between the deformed and target geometries was 0.3 ± 1.1 mm. Most elements met the mesh quality criteria (95%) after deformation, without interference at the articular facets. The method's novelty lies in the deformation of the entire spine at once, as opposed to deforming each vertebra separately, with surrounding control points and smoothing. This enables the transformation of reference vertebrae and soft tissues to obtain complete and personalized FEMs of the spine with minimal postprocessing to optimize the mesh. The lateral bending test is routinely used by clinicians for the preoperative assessment of spinal mobility. The evaluation of bending motion is usually based on the qualitative analysis of a two-dimensional (2-D) antero-posterior X-ray image. The aim of this paper is to introduce a novel three-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction technique that is a prerequisite for the quantitative 3-D analysis of lateral bending motion. An algorithm was developed for the 3-D reconstruction of the spine from a single X-ray image. The X-ray is calibrate using a small calibration object and an explicit calibration algorithm. The information contained in the single X-ray is completed by registering a priori 3LD geometric models of individual vertebrae. Part of the error yielded by the 3-D12-D registration is corrected by a vertebral alignment constraint that aims to minimize intervertebral dislocations. Three-di- mensional models of 15 different scoliosis patients, obtained from a standard stereo-radiographic 3-D reconstruction, were used in simulation and validation experiments. Experimental results show that the new method is robust and accurate. With pessimistic levels of simulated noise, the average root mean square reconstruction error is 2.89 mm, which is appropriate for common clinical applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
