This paper presents a novel topology for instantaneous reactive power compensation. The topology is derived from the Dynamic-Current or Dyna-C, which is a patented power converter capable of transferring energy for two or multiterminal dc, single- and/or multiphase ac systems. The proposed topology, named dynamic VAr compensator (DVC), has a current source power conversion stage and can provide instantaneous leading or lagging reactive power. The proposed DVC has three individual bridges coupled through a three-winding high-frequency transformer. It has a modular structure that allows it to be series stacked for medium-voltage applications. In addition, the high-frequency Galvanic isolation link provides interphase fault isolation among the three phases. The circuit eliminates the use of electrolytic capacitors for bulk energy storage, which usually lowers life and reliability. Operating principles, theoretical analysis, and design of the proposed topology are described. The converter functionality is validated through simulation as well as experimental results. This paper presents a topology for bidirectional solid-state transformers with a minimal device count. The topology, referenced as dynamic-current or Dyna-C, has two current-source inverter stages with a high-frequency galvanic isolation, requiring 12 switches for four-quadrant three-phase ac/ac power conversion. The topology has voltage step-up/down capability, and the input and output can have arbitrary power factors and frequencies. Further, the Dyna-C can be configured as isolated power converters for single- or multiterminal dc, and single- or multiphase ac systems. The modular nature of the Dyna-C lends itself to be connected in series and/or parallel for high-voltage high-power applications. The proposed converter topology can find a broad range of applications such as isolated battery chargers, uninterruptible power supplies, renewable energy integration, smart grid, and power conversion for space-critical applications including aviation, locomotives, and ships. This paper outlines various configurations of the Dyna-C, as well as the relative operation and controls. The Dynamic Current or Dyna-C is a minimal topology for implementing the bidirectional three-phase solid-state transformer (SST). While only two current-source power conversion stages are employed, the Dyna-C SST has features of voltage step up/down, arbitrary power factors, and frequencies between the input and output terminals. In this paper, a compact 50-kVA three-phase SST based on this minimal topology is designed. More specifically, design considerations and practical implementation techniques are presented. Industrial plants are faced with stringent requirements by the utility to maintain a near unity power factor. These plants have traditionally utilized switched capacitor banks as a cost-effective means for power factor correction (PFC). However, if there is a significant level of harmonics present in the current that is disturbing the neighboring loads, then a separate unit for harmonic filtering is required as well. By the time a realistic system is configured, significant cost and complexity are encountered. The concept of a dynamic capacitor (D-CAP) was previously introduced as a means by which to achieve dynamic VAR injection as well as active harmonic filtering in one single integrated unit. The topology consists of taking an existing asset like a PFC capacitor, adding a pair of ac switches and small LC components per phase, and thereby realizing an asset with augmented functionalities. Although the power stage is simple, the underlying control is very challenging. Industrial plants are faced with stringent requirements enforced by the utility to meet power factor and power quality requirements. These plants, in order to avoid very costly penalties, have traditionally utilized switchable shunt capacitor banks with detuning reactors for power factor correction, along with a separate active harmonic filter in cases where harmonic currents are an issue as well. Alternate solutions such as SVCs and STATCOMs have been considered to be too expensive for use in industrial power conditioning applications. This paper proposes a dynamic capacitor (D-CAP) based on the family of inverter-less active filters that is able to provide a dynamically controllable capacitance with active harmonic filtering integrated into the same unit. This new device is seen to be compact, and is likely to be cost competitive against simple switched shunt capacitors. It can maintain power factor close to unity, offering dynamic capabilities better than switched capacitors or SVCs, possibly lending itself for arc-furnace type of loads. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Voltage sags are the leading cause of unscheduled downtime in industrial plants with high levels of automation. Zero-energy sag correctors (ZESCs) that utilize energy from those phases that have sufficient remaining voltage on them promise levels of protection that are comparable with conventional energy storage based sag correctors, but in a more compact package. This paper presents a ZESC topology with reduced device count using readily available device packages that can realize similar performance as the original ZESC circuit. The proposed ZESC behaves like a "thin ac converter," and can be integrated with existing assets such as transformers and switchgears. Plants and processes with a high level of industrial automation are most severely affected by short-duration power disturbances. Such plants are frequently fed from highly reliable utility grids, with measured reliability levels that are consistently in excess of 3-5 nines, yet face hours of unscheduled downtime resulting from short-duration voltage sags. Extensive data confirm that such plants experience, on average, 30 power disturbances annually, of which over 95% are short-duration disturbances lasting for no more than six cycles on average. Data also confirm that over 90% of these disturbances are asymmetrical faults. This paper shows a new approach to protecting industrial plants from power disturbances by building on the fact that it is prohibitively expensive to protect against all possible power disturbances and that the cost-effective protection is based on a statistical assessment of disturbances recorded and equipment susceptibility. This paper also shows that it is possible to use a new family of zero-energy sag correctors to realize protection against over 96 of all power disturbances. Offshore wind farms using HVDC links can be positioned a large distance from shore, opening up new opportunities for wind generation. Conventional approaches using 60 Hz generators and transformers are not appropriate in such applications, as they are heavy and result in expensive and complex installation and maintenance issues. This paper proposes an alternative architecture for such wind farms, using permanent magnet generators, medium frequency transformers and simple power converters to realize a compact and light system.
