We propose a new object descriptor for three dimensional data named the Global Structure Histogram (GSH). The GSH encodes the structure of a local feature response on a coarse global scale, providing a beneficial trade-off between generalization and discrimination. Encoding the structural characteristics of an object allows us to retain low local variations while keeping the benefit of global representativeness. In an extensive experimental evaluation, we applied the framework to category-based object classification in realistic scenarios. LiDAR is a kind of remote sensing technology with a big development in recent years. It attracts much attention because of the rapid access of the three dimensional coordinates. But the model built from the LiDAR data includes noise inevitably. How to remove the noise to improve the quality of three dimensional models becomes a problem which can not be ignored. This paper does a research on the principles of Mean Shift method. The experimental thresholds were calculated after three dimensional data smoothing, and then denoise. Finally there are results of different data.

The enlarging volumes of data resources produced in real world makes classification of very large scale data a challenging task. Therefore, parallel process of very large high dimensional data is very important. Hyper-Surface Classification (HSC) is approved to be an effective and efficient classification algorithm to handle two and three dimensional data. Though HSC can be extended to deal with high dimensional data with dimension reduction or ensemble techniques, it is not trivial to tackle high dimensional data directly. Inspired by the decision tree idea, an improvement of HSC is proposed to deal with high dimensional data directly in this work. Furthermore, we parallelize the improved HSC algorithm (PHSC) to handle large scale high dimensional data based on MapReduce framework, which is a current and powerful parallel programming technique used in many fields. Experimental results show that the parallel improved HSC algorithm not only can directly deal with high dimensional data, but also can handle large scale data set. Furthermore, the evaluation criterions of scaleup, speedup and sizeup validate its efficiency.

Acoustic tags have been used to monitor the swimming patterns of downstream migrating salmon smolts approaching various dams on the Columbia River, USA. Downstream migrating yearling chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), steelhead (O. mykiss), sockeye (O. nerka), and sub-yearling chinook smolts were surgically implanted with acoustic tags. Fish were tracked in three-dimensions as they approached and passed into the turbine intakes, spillways, and surface bypass channel entrances at the dams during the spring and summer outmigrations of 2005–2009. A number of advances in the analysis methods, techniques and software have been made over the past several years. Some of these improvements include the development of fish density algorithms, stream trace modeling analysis, and advances in three-dimensional animation programs. Three-dimensional tracks of fish approaching the turbine intakes, spillways, and surface bypass channel entrances will be presented. Concentrations of fish passage will be presented as three-dimensional fish densities superimposed over dam structures.

We propose a novel numerical approach for solving the free-form deformable registration problem. The central idea is to utilize the well understood techniques from variational deformable registration problems. We demonstrate that it is possible to formulate the free-form deformable registration problem as the optimization of an energy functional as in the dense deformation case. This energy functional possesses image distance and regularization terms, which are both functions of the free-form deformation control points. We then setup a semi-backward (implicit) partial differential equation that optimizes the established energy functional. In addition to being mathematically justified, this approach provides both accuracy and speed. Our evaluation on synthetic, real, two dimensional, and three dimensional data demonstrates accuracy and computational effectiveness.

In anticipation of the arrival of a digital radiology department, a dedicated image processing laboratory has been established within the Department of Radiological Sciences, UCLA. This laboratory consists of a multiple user computer an image processor, a communiction system, and an image mass storage device. Three major areas of activities in the laboratory are the development of a radiological image archiving and communication system, installation of a multiple digital viewing station, and research on picture processing techniques to enhance the image diagnostic value. This paper describes the system configuration of the laboratory and some of its capabilities in manipulating three-dimensional medical images.

A three-dimensional computer memory architecture based on the optical properties of the integral membrane protein bacteriorhodopsin has been previously proposed. However, confirmation of the very important branched photocycle property of this protein has not been shown. Data confirming the existence of a branched photocycle by writing a long term stable bit of information within the center of a cube of protein is presented. The stable photoproduct is formed by pulsing a 635 nm laser followed by an intersecting 690 nm laser pulse. At the point of intersection a stable branched photo-product appears. We found that at elevated temperatures the rate of production of the stable photoproduct is greatly increased and therefore the experiments are performed at 40/spl deg/C. Data representing absorbance changes at 690 nm due to the bacteriorhodopsin photocycle at 40/spl deg/C is presented. This information is required to set the timing of the light pulses required to write a bit. Then the pulse-pulse experiment is performed with a corresponding increase in transmission observed during the 690 nm light pulse. This confirms the production of the stable photoproduct. The experiment is then repeated with both lasers pulsing simultaneously. If the photoproduct is formed from a branch off of the photocycle, the simultaneous pulses should form much less photoproduct, despite an equivalent number of photons. Data showing this result is presented confirming the branched production of the stable photoproduct, thus proving the three dimensional computer memory architecture.
