38. Systematic Procedure for Mitigating DFIG-SSR Using Phase Imbalance Compensation.

Abstract

Replacing conventional generation by power electronics based generation changes the dynamic characteristics of the power system. This results among others in the increased susceptibility to sub synchronous oscillations (SSO). This paper proposes a systematic procedure for mitigating the interactions between a DFIG and a series compensated transmission line using the phase imbalance compensation (PIC) concept. The impact of the series and parallel PIC on the resonance behaviour of the grid is first thoroughly investigated. Then, the influence of the system strength on the capabilities of the PIC to mitigate DFIG-SSR is assessed. Based on the findings a design framework which enables the systematic assessment of the series and parallel PIC for mitigating DFIG-SSR is developed and successfully implemented in the modified IEEE 39 bus system. Comparison between both concepts reveals that the parallel PIC is better suited to mitigate DFIG-SSR. The impedance based stability analysis and detailed time domain electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations are used to respectively screen and validate the results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The paper presents an approach for online centralized control in active distribution networks. It combines a proportional integral (PI) control unit with a corrective control unit (CCU), based on the principle of Model Predictive Control (MPC). The proposed controller is designed to accommodate the increasing penetration of distributed generation in active distribution networks. It helps in continuously satisfying the reactive power requirements of the transmission system operators (TSOs), while maintaining an acceptable voltage profile in the active distribution network, and simultaneously minimizing the total active power losses. The controller also ensures compliance to operation requirements of distribution network operators (DNOs). By replacing the full load flow (LF) calculation with sensitivities, derived from a linearized model of the network, the controller can work in real-time applications. Moreover, the computational burden of the proposed controller is reduced since the CCU is activated only when a voltage violation or considerable change of operation condition occurs. The performance of the proposed controller is demonstrated on a 11-kV test network with 75 buses and 22 distributed generators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The reduction of embedded portable devices involves a magnetic field interference problem when it integrates near field communication (NFC) due to the presence of conductive surfaces, such as ground planes, batteries, or metallic enclosures. Flexible sintered ferrite sheets (FSFS) represent an interesting shielding solution to prevent electromagnetic interferences problems related to NFC, thanks to their ability to control the magnetic flux. The characterization of FSFS effectiveness is analyzed as a function of the sheet thickness in this contribution. This is performed with the aim of determining which is the optimum thickness value to retune an NFC antenna to its original operation frequency value (13.56 MHz) when it is affected by a near conductive surface. A finite element method simulation model is designed and corroborated with the experimental results to evaluate the performance of different FSFS thicknesses in terms of resonant frequency shift, magnetic field strength, and communication distance. An electromagnetic scanner is also used to determine the ability of the best FSFS thickness to shield an NFC transmitter antenna when a battery is set under it, emulating a usual problem. The results obtained show that the magnetic field strength is significantly attenuated and the communication distance is highly shorted. Therefore, besides selecting a material that provides high reflection and low losses at 13.56 MHz, thickness must be considered to ensure the greatest communication effectiveness. Consequently, the use of a wrong FSFS thickness could lead to shifting the resonance frequency to lower values than expected, detuning the communication. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
