6. Effect of Temperature on RCS Measure and Calibration of Standard Metal Ball up to 800°C

Abstract

Metal balls are often used as standard bodies in the target RCS measure based on precise theoretical calculations, and the accuracy of RCS measure data is directly related to the experiment measure. This paper mainly studies the calibration of metal balls at high temperatures in target RCS measure. Firstly, the high temperature field of targets is analyzed, and it is found that the changes of amplitude and phase distributions of the electromagnetic field surrounding the heated target. Then the echo of the standard metal ball at the ambient temperature is obtained through experiments, and the data is used as the calibration. Several temperature points of the target ranging from 30° to 800°C are selected for RCS measure to obtain the standard body RCS data, and get the experiment error less than 0.5 dB based on the temperature dependence of RCS data of 200 mm diameter metal ball. Therefore, RCS data are not sensitive to the temperature below 800°C, so the high temperature performance measure of the stealth targets can be calibrated at ambient temperature, which can obviously improve the efficiency at the high temperature.

Abstract

This communication presents the complete design of a circularly polarized (CP) folded reflectarray (FRA) antenna with an integrated planar structure for the first time in the open literature. To achieve circularly polarized, a printed meander-line polarizer is designed and integrated with the linearly polarized (LP) FRA. To achieve a low-profile planar structure, an integrated $2 \times 2$ planar array is designed as the feed source instead of a horn. Thus, the whole antenna, including the feed source, LPFRA, and meander-line polarizer, can be fully integrated and fabricated using low-cost printed circuit board technology. To validate the concept, a right-handed CPFRA operating in C-band is designed, fabricated, and measured. The broadside axial ratio (AR) of the proposed CPFRA is lower than 1 dB over a bandwidth from 5.22 to 5.46 GHz. In addition, the maximum gain of 22.8 dBic is obtained at 5.38 GHz with the antenna efficiency of 27%. Abstract

The pseudoliquid (PSL) armature with air spring is a novel railgun armature which has been fired successfully many times in a simple railgun by a united research group led by Beijing Institute of Special Electromechanical Technology (BISET), and the results of these experiments show that this armature can prevent transition in some conditions. Multiple turns in a railgun can significantly increase the inductance gradient of the launcher and decrease the needed current. Therefore, BISET initiated a program to launch projectiles with PSL armatures by a two-turn railgun. This paper presents an overview of this program, including the pulsed-power supply, a two-turn rail launcher, projectiles, and some experimental results.
