Post-arc breakdowns of vacuum circuit breakers during capacitive operation can be possibly caused by particles. In this work, we experimentally observe the generation and dynamics of particles in capacitive interruptions and their resultant effects on post-arc breakdowns. We further constructed a synthetic test circuit for the capacitive current switching and adopted the laser-shadow technique to observe the dynamics behaviors of particles, formed by different electrode materials and inrush currents. CuCr10 electrodes tend to generate particles with high probability and quantity, owing to their weak refractoriness and lower mechanical strength. Furthermore, we find that the higher inrush current facilitates the formation of particles. Additionally, under the influence of recovery voltages and variable charges, particles show complex and diverse dynamic behavior, such as bouncing, oscillating, levitating, lifting, and rotating. Essentially, all particles relevant to breakdowns moved at a low speed (below 0.5 m/s), besides, almost all non-sustained disruptive discharges and restrikes are concerned with the particles closed to electrodes under near-peak recovery voltage. Therefore, we think neither energy accumulation nor high-speed bombardment of particles can explain post-arc breakdowns, conversely, the joint effect of particle-induced field enhancement and resulting field electron emission is responsible for breakdowns. It is well-known that when high currents flow through a vacuum gap, anode spots are formed on the anode surface. However, anode flare phenomena are also observed in low-current vacuum discharges. The objective of this article is to experimentally observe the spatial distribution of excited Cu atoms and ions generated from a single cathode spot (CS) and to interpret the mechanism of the anode flare at low currents (40–80 A). Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) techniques have been used for investigating low-current vacuum arc discharge confined to axial magnetic fields (AMFs). The effects of AMFs and arc currents on the axial distribution of the radiation intensity were investigated for different copper ionization states (Cu I and Cu II). The highest luminance was found near the electrodes for both excited neutral copper atoms and ions, and only weak spectral lines of excited Ni atoms were detected in the near-anode region. With increasing the external AMF, a bright “spot” appeared near the anode surface. In the visible light range, excited atoms were the main contributor to anode flare in low-current vacuum discharge. As measured by LIF, the density of copper atoms near the anode increased from 10 $\times 10^{17}$ to 14 $\times 10^{17}\,\,\text{m}^{-3}$ when the applied magnetic fields increased from 31 to 74 mT. The anode flare contains far more excited atoms from the cathode material than the anode material. They are the results of cathodic plasma expansion to reach the anode after charge neutralization and reflection on the anode surface. For the single CS, the observed fact that a tiny number of atoms leave the anode surface and participate in the anode flare is more likely the result of a sputtering effect rather than thermal evaporation by cathode electron stream. The evolution processes of vacuum breakdowns in single- and double-break vacuum interrupters are reported in this paper, in order to reveal the formation mechanisms for the conductive channels in vacuum arcs. Breakdown experiments in two vacuum interrupters containing 10–30 mm gaps with single-break and double-break are studied. The light emission during breakdowns is observed by an intensified charge coupled device camera, with the current and voltage waveforms being recorded simultaneously. According to the results, there is no difference between the evolution processes of breakdowns in small gaps and large gaps. The establishment of the conductive channel and sustaining of the vacuum arc can be achieved by the effect of the cathode without any contribution from the anodic glow. The distribution and dissipation of neutral atoms are crucial for understanding the dielectric recovery process after interrupting direct current (DC) vacuum arcs. This article aims to investigate the dissipation of copper atoms after a forced extinction of the vacuum arc experimentally, adopting the plane laser-induced fluorescence method. The change in the 2-D distribution of copper atoms with time is presented. The results show that the magnetic fields, the axial magnetic field (AMF), and the transverse magnetic field (TMF) have a limited effect on the initial density of copper atoms. For both the AMF and the TMF, the copper atom densities at current zero (CZ) vary in the range (6– $8) \times 10^{17}\,\,\text{m}^{-3}$ when 3-kA vacuum arcs are forced to 0 in 0.2 ms. Contrary to the TMF case, in the AMF case, the evaporation on the anode after the CZ results in long-existing atoms near it. Consequently, the atom density of the TMF decays faster than that of the AMF, which indicates that a vacuum interrupter with the TMF contacts has a better performance when interrupting a DC load. The difference between the two magnetic fields originates from the arc control patterns. Namely, the AMF tends to keep vacuum arcs in a stable mode, which is unfavorable for a DC interruption; on the contrary, the TMF drives the vacuum arcs to move at high velocities resulting in faster dissipation of copper atoms after the CZ. In addition, the composition proportion of CuCr contacts has a limited effect on the diffusion of copper atoms when a low-vacuum arc is interrupted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anode surface temperature after current zero has a great impact on the interruption capacity of a vacuum interrupter. The objective of this paper is to theoretically investigate the relation between breakdown voltages and anode surface temperature after current zero. A heat conduction model was adopted to describe the temperature development of the anode, taking account of phase transition and evaporation. The breakdown voltages in certain metal vapor densities were obtained by the Particle-in-Cell/Monte Carlo collision (PIC-MCC) method. Finally, the Paschen curve for copper vapor was obtained using the PIC–MCC method and verified by the theoretical model. Moreover, the minimum breakdown voltage, 30 V, was obtained at a density of 1.3\times 10^22/\textm^3 with a gap of 10 mm, which corresponded to a surface temperature of 1983 K. In order to ensure a successful interruption, anode surface temperature should not be higher than 1983 K at current zero, and the melting time should be kept as short as possible. Anode surface temperature has a significant impact on the interruption capacity of a vacuum circuit breaker. The objective of this paper is to experimentally understand the decay process of anode surface temperature after extinguishing a high-vacuum arc with a large contact gap. The anode surface temperature after current zero was measured by a two-color pyrometer and arc modes observation was recorded by a highspeed charge-coupled device. A pair of asymmetric butt type contacts (contact materials: CuCr25 and CuCr50) was subjected to an axial magnetic field in a demountable vacuum chamber. The experimental result shows that there are two modes in decay processes of anode surface temperature: Mode I and Mode II. Mode I describes the anode surface decay process after diffuse low-current extinction and Mode II corresponds to high current extinction. Permanent magnetic actuators (PMAs) have been widely used in medium-voltage vacuum circuit breakers (VCBs) due to their high reliability and controllability. However, a conventional bistable PMA cannot be adopted in power equipment for the transmission voltage level such as 126 kV VCBs directly because of its low-velocity characteristics. The objective of this paper is to propose a multimagnetic circuit PMA to satisfy the high-velocity requirements for 126 kV VCBs. The novel PMA is a bistable and axisymmetric structure, including holding and driving components whose magnetic circuits are separated. Air gaps are specifically designed in the magnetic circuits to improve the velocity performance of the novel PMA. Both static and dynamic characteristics of the novel PMA model have been calculated through finite-element software coupled with multi-body dynamics software. Furthermore, a prototype of the PMA has been developed according to the calculation results. The experimental results on the prototype have shown that the velocity characteristics of the PMA are able to meet the requirements of a 126 kV VCB and agree well with the simulation results. In this article, piezoelectric ceramic is a core device of an ultrasonic wireless power transmission (UWPT) system. The most commonly used piezoelectric ceramic in research and applications of UWPT has a ring-like shape. The piezoelectric ceramic rings usually work in the presence of significant radial and axial vibrations as long as they are not extremely thin. However, in most studies related to the UWPT, only the axial vibration mode is considered. The Mason equivalent circuit model of axial vibration is widely used and the effect of radial vibration on the whole system is ignored. In this article, first, a method to analyze the piezoelectric ceramic ring considering the radial-axial coupled vibration is proposed. Second, the analytical expressions of the constitutive equations of the piezoelectric ceramic ring are derived. Third, a new form of analytical equations is constructed, and a novel two-dimensional equivalent circuit of the UWPT system considering the radial-axial coupled vibration of the piezoelectric ceramic ring is proposed. Fourth, the input and output characteristics of the proposed model and the conventional Mason equivalent circuit model are simulated using MATLAB. Last, the simulation results are compared and verified by experiments. The results demonstrate that the proposed model can describe the system resonance more accurately and comprehensively than the conventional Mason model. As a whole, this study increases the accuracy of the equivalent circuit model of the UWPT system and has important theoretical significance for UWPT research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this paper is to gain insight into free recovery processes in vacuum interrupters after diffused vacuum arcs extinction. A sub-microsecond voltage impulse, which peaked at 90 kV with a rising time of 150 ns) (rate of rise 480 kV/?s), were electronically controlled to apply upon a switching gap of a vacuum interrupter at a predetermined interval after a power frequency current zero. Based on the breakdown voltages at different intervals after arc extinction, we can obtain the free recovery behavior of the vacuum interrupter. The contact materials under study included Cu, CuCr25 and CuCr50. The contacts were butttype, and the contact diameters were 12 and 25 mm, respectively. The arc current peaked at 2.1 kA with a frequency of 50 Hz and the arcing time was ~9 ms. The results show the free recovery behavior stepped from ~28 kV to ~70 kV at ~4 ?s after arc extinction for the three kinds of contact materials with the two contact diameters given. By calculation of the dissipation of metal vapor density and ion density, we conclude that the decay of ions, rather than metal vapor, may be the main reason for the stepwise behavior of the free recovery process after diffused vacuum arcs extinction. This article presents a fully integrated radio frequency (RF) rectifier on a flexible polyimide (PI) substrate. This circuit is designed and implemented using a chemical-vapor-deposition (CVD) graphene monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) process, where a metal–insulator–graphene (MIG) diode is employed to obtain the necessary nonlinearity for the rectifier. The smooth surface enables good titanium dioxide (Tio2) barrier interface formation and a higher carrier transport performance of the graphene. Passive components are also developed on the same substrate. To carry out the circuit design, a large-signal diode model is created based on measured results on a test key. A rectifier is deliberately designed for eliminating the input matching network by properly sizing the MIG diode and the load impedance. Removing the matching network results in a compact size and reduces the loss of the input of the rectifier. Nevertheless, the measured input reflection coefficient at 2.4 GHz is −17.5 dB, and measured, peak output dc voltage is 93 mV at an input power of 15.7 dBm. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this design achieves the highest output voltage of all graphene-based rectifiers on a flexible substrate at 2.4 GHz. Thanks to the CVD graphene MMIC process, a rectifier array could be realized and thus, low-energy devices such as wireless-sensor-network (WSN) and medical implants are potential applications. Fully kinetic simulations of arc discharge in vacuum interrupters (VIs) often suffer from prohibitive computational costs. In this article, a hybrid kinetic–magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) transient simulation of vacuum arc using a field-circuit coupling method is proposed for a vacuum circuit breaker. Compared with the fully kinetic simulation method, the advance of the proposed method originates from the so-called hybrid modeling of ion kinetics and electron MHD, where ions and electrons in a VI are separately treated as macroparticles and massless fluids. The simulation results of the arc are consistent with the arc morphology in the discharge plasma experiment. Furthermore, the proposed field-circuit coupling transient model is used to study the number and the decay time of plasma between the electrodes during the interruption process. We report on the fabrication and characterization of field-effect transistors (FETs) based on chemical vapor deposited (CVD) graphene encapsulated between few layer CVD boron nitride (BN) sheets with complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) compatible nickel edge contacts. Noncontact terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) of large-area BN/graphene/ BN (BN/G/BN) stacks reveals average sheet conductivity >1 mS/sq. and average mobility of 2500 cm2/V $\cdot $ s. Improved output conductance is observed in dc measurements under ambient conditions, indicating the potential for radio frequency (RF) applications. Moreover, we report a maximum voltage gain of 6 dB from a low-frequency signal amplifier circuit. RF characterization of the GFETs yields an ${f}_{T}\times {L}_{g}$ product of 2.64 GHz $\cdot ~\mu \text{m}$ and an ${f}_{{\textsf {Max}}}\times {L}_{g}$ product of 5.88 GHz $\cdot ~\mu \text{m}$. This paper presents for the first time THz-TDS usage in combination with other characterization methods for device performance assessment on BN/G/BN stacks. We report our measurements of anode current density distributions for different modes in vacuum arc discharge using a split-anode and a cup-shaped axial magnetic field cathode configuration system. The modes investigated included the diffuse arc and anode spot. The anode surface was divided into four regions: one central region and three symmetrical-disposed peripheral annular-arc regions. Three different-sized central regions were selected with diameters of 12, 18, and 20 mm. The contact material was CuCr25 (25% Cr). The arc current in the tests ranged from 6 to 14 kA (rms) at 50 Hz. The opening velocities were 1.8 and 2.4 m/s, respectively. The currents of the four areas on the anode contact were measured by four Rogowski coils situated outside the vacuum chamber. The experimental results show the current density distribution in different arc modes. For the diffuse arc mode with arc currents of 6 and 8 kA (rms), the average current density in the central region at current peak ranged from 8.5 to 15.9 A/mm ^2 . The anode spot current density ranged from 31.9 to 37.7 A/mm ^2 , estimated from the current density in the eroded region caused by the anode spots covering the entire central region of diameters 12 and 18 mm, at currents of 12 and 14 kA, respectively, regarded as the lower limit current density of the anode spot. Moreover, the dependence of the current density distribution on opening velocity in diffuse arcs was slight. The objective of this paper is to investigate the anode erosion pattern caused by the blowing effect in constricted vacuum arcs under an axial magnetic field (AMF). The blowing effect was reflected from the microstructure of the melt layer on the anode. A pair of 42-mm-diameter AMF contacts were installed inside a detachable vacuum chamber. The contact material was CuCr25 (25% Cr). The arc modes were observed with a high-speed charge-coupled device video camera. The anode surface temperature after current zero was measured with a two-color pyrometer. The microstructure of the cross section of the anode surface melt layer was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The experimental arc currents increased from 10.5 to 17.8 kA (rms) with an interval of 2 kA. The results show that the anode erosion pattern in constricted arcs is caused by an interactive process of thermal and mechanical effects. The constricted arc columns melted the anode surface material and blew the molten material from the center to the peripheral region. The redistribution of the anode molten layer caused by this blowing effect formed two erosion regions on the anode surface. The depth of the melt layer in the central region was less than 100 \mu \textm , but in the peripheral region it was in the range of 100–400 \mu \textm . In these different erosion regions of the anode melt layer, there was considerable variation in both size and shape of the Cr sphere. Moreover, the thermal and mechanical effects of the constricted arc redistributed the Cr content of the molten layer on the anode surface. The Cr content in the central region (Erosion Region I) increased to 31% and in the periphery region (Erosion Region II) it decreased to 18%, respectively, from 25% before the experiments.
