We investigate how to provide Quality-of-Service (QoS) for diversified video flows. We design a fine-grained video traffic control mechanism that integrates traffic classification with path selection for video flows within the framework of SDN. For the design, we present a category-theoretic ontology log (olog) diagram model, which provides a novel perspective on the interdependency among various system components. For the video traffic classification, we first evaluate various machine learning classifiers in terms of their performance and then chose the most effective one to be the first module. For the path selection, we devise a multi-constrained QoS routing strategy by restructuring a state-of-the-art graph algorithm, combine it with the ${k}$ -shortest path algorithm, and deploy this strategy as another video traffic control module. We implemented a prototype of the proposed mechanism on the SDN emulator Mininet, and we evaluate its effectiveness using the performance results obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Energy efficiency plays a vital role in device-to-device communications, which has been recognized as a key challenge. In this article, we study the implications of the peak power constraints and processing cost on the energy scheduling policy, and find that the peak power should be used around the time slots of each energy arrival, and the only time slot in which the intermittent communication may occur is the last time slot. A new optimal energy scheduling algorithm is devised based on these observations. Also, we propose a near-optimal energy scheduling algorithm that simultaneously takes into account the peak power constraints and the processing cost. While mode selection has been envisioned as the most cost-effective way to address the interference issue in Device-to-Device (D2D) communications, existing works have been largely conducted without consideration of the energy depletion of devices. In this paper we investigate simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) empowered mode selection based on stochastic geometry. As a mean of solving it, system energy efficiency is formulated by determining the closed-form ergodic energy-harvested and ergodic capacity of D2D and cellular users in reuse, dedicated, and cellular communication modes with the time switching and power splitting architectures of SWIPT. We then leverage the derived results, along with the energy efficiency to design an energy-efficient mode selection mechanism. Our simulation results show that the developed mechanism is able to select the best mode for D2D communication with better energy efficiency, especially in an ultra-dense cellular network as compared with a state-of-the-art mode selection approach. This paper addresses the energy efficiency issue for content sharing with collaborative mobile clouds (CMC). We start by maximizing the data rate of cellular transmissions under the maximum transmit power constraint of the cellular users, to obtain the optimal beamforming vectors. Using these vectors, we propose a water filling based data segmentation approach for content distribution. Furthermore, within the CMC, we design cost-effective resource allocation and power control mechanisms for device-to-device communications. Through performance comparisons, we disclose that our proposed scheme outperforms some previous study in terms of delay and energy consumption per mobile terminal, which further validates the effectiveness of our design. Fuel utilization efficiency and cost reduction are two major goals in designing in-vehicle networks. Aiming to address these two issues, we investigate in-vehicle networking protocols from both wired and wireless perspectives by first presenting representative solutions in each area, then identifying the challenges to current solutions, and finally advocating the use of the automotive Ethernet. Also, we propose a priority-based scheduler for the automotive Ethernet. Our preliminary experiments show that the proposed scheduler is effective and flexible, and thus is applicable to next-generation in-vehicle networks. Cloud computing has emerged as a new computing paradigm, with provisioning model generally consisting of cloud service providers (CSPs), network service providers (NSPs), and end users. The associated economics has opened up a new research area; and with the expansion of the cloud computing market, the relationship between CSPs and NSPs, is changing profoundly. In addition to providing the default network services, traditional NSPs, in attempt to compete with CSPs, have started offering cloud services to end users. Though much progress has been made toward addressing competitions among CSPs themselves or among NSPs themselves, few studies have focused on the competition between CSPs and NSPs. In this paper, we investigate the problem of insufficient studies on the competition between CSPs and NSPs by presenting a new economic model to characterize the competition between CSPs and NSPs, and by conducting thorough theoretical analysis as well as numeric experiments to validate the proposed model. We believe, based on results, that the proposed economic model is general and feasible, and thus is applicable to modeling the competition among service providers in cloud computing market. Resource allocation plays a critical role in mitigating interference for device-to-device (D2D) communications underlaying 5G networks. Although this issue has been explored by various game-theory-based approaches, most of the prior studies focus only on the single-cell scenario, and in the few existing multicell studies, they implicitly assume that each player has complete information on transmission parameters of other players. In this paper, we investigate the resource allocation problem, where the D2D links utilize common resources of multiple cells and each player's transmission parameter (information) is unknown to other players. To address the problem, a new game-theoretic mechanism is proposed. Specifically, we first present a static game model, and then extend it to a repeated one. Based on this repeated model, we propose a resource allocation protocol according to interactions among base stations and devices. We also thoroughly analyze the proposed mechanism by showing its optimality and by deriving a sufficient condition for its stability. Extensive simulation results demonstrate an interesting insight: The utility and sum rate of each player under the incomplete information condition are higher than the counterparts under the complete information condition, which implies that each player has an incentive to conceal its information to improve its profits. Energy efficiency will play a crucial role in future communication systems and has become a main design target for all 5G radio access networks. The high operational costs and impossibility of replacing or recharging wireless device batteries in multiple scenarios, such as wireless medical sensors inside the human body, call for a new technology by which wireless devices can harvest energy from the environment via capturing ambient RF signals. SWIPT has emerged as a powerful means to address this issue. In this article, we survey the current architectures and enabling technologies for SWIPT and identify technical challenges to implement SWIPT. Following an overview of enabling technologies for SWIPT and SWIPT-assisted wireless systems, we showcase a novel SWIPT-supported power allocation mechanism for D2D communications to illustrate the importance of the application of SWIPT. Device-to-device (D2D) communications has been realized as an effective means to improve network throughput, reduce transmission latency, and extend cellular coverage in 5G systems. Network coding is a well established technique known for its capability to reduce the number of retransmissions. In this article, we review stateof- the-art network coding in relay-based D2D communications, in terms of application scenarios and network coding techniques. We then apply two representative network coding techniques to dual-hop D2D communications and present an efficient relay node selecting mechanism as a case study. We also outline potential future research directions, according to the current research challenges. Our intention is to provide researchers and practitioners with a comprehensive overview of the current research status in this area and hope that this article may motivate more researchers to participate in developing network coding techniques for different relay-based D2D communications scenarios. The IoT is one of the most significant recent innovations in information technologies, which has attracted extensive attention from both industry and academia due to its potential impact on various networking-related fields. The rapid development in IoT technologies has resulted in widespread application of this emerging networking paradigm in various disciplines. On the other hand, IoT faces some challenges that must be fully dealt with, among which scalability and energy efficiency are two critical issues. Topology control offers a promising approach to designing a large-scale and energy-efficient IoT. In this article, we first present a taxonomy of currently available topology control algorithms, and then propose a systematic approach to topology construction in IoT to achieve scalability and energy efficiency. We intend to provide researchers and practitioners with a big picture of the current research status in this area, and hope that this article may motivate more researchers to participate in largescale IoT design, development, and deployment.
