The “Divertor Tokamak Test” (DTT) facility is an experimental fusion reactor being built in Frascati (IT) in the framework of the European Fusion Roadmap. The DTT Central Solenoid comprises six independently energized modules, wound from Nb3Sn Cable-In-Conduit Conductors (CICC). The future addition of a High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) insert would enhance the CS performance, in terms of magnetic flux density and magnetic field produced in the machine and would represent a fundamental technology demonstration toward high-field fusion. Along with the LTS cables, the Central Solenoid complex aims to reach 18 Wb at the pre-magnetization phase, being 16.54 Wb with the LTS CS only. Each LTS module is internally divided into three sub-modules: High Field (HF), Medium Field (MF) and Low Field (LF), each with a dedicated CICC cable optimized for the intense electromagnetic loads during the plasma scenarios. The LTS cables adopt a 316LN steel jacket and a fiberglass-reinforced resin insulation layer. The conceptual design presented here concerns an HTS insert, to be possibly placed inside the CS bore in the machine, employing a Round-In-Square (RIS) configuration of the conductor with either aluminum alloy or steel jackets. The study carried out for the design of the HTS insert and its pre-compression structure, the main electromagnetic and structural analyses and the design solution are presented in this work. The DTT Central Solenoid operates in a pulsed regime to generate the magnetic flux needed to induce the plasma current and is therefore subjected to burdensome load conditions. In DTT, this magnet will consist of a stack of six layer-wound independently energized modules, wound with Nb3Sn Cable-in-Conduit Conductors. Different layout solutions have been studied to improve the performance of the CS in terms of magnetic flux density and structural integrity. The design presented is the result of the “Design Explorer” algorithm that has been specifically developed for this purpose. This code investigates all possible configurations to find the optimum conductor geometry and winding solution by considering measurable physical quantities to maximize the magnetic flux density while maintaining mechanical stresses at an acceptable level. This manuscript includes the electromagnetic calculation related to the heterogeneous plasma scenarios of the machine, the static structural and the fatigue life assessment and the full set of in-depth analyses performed for the qualification of the main components of the CS structure. For the planned luminosity upgrade of the CERN LHC to the sLHC new radiation hard technologies for the tracking detectors are investigated. Corresponding to the luminosity increase, the radiation dose will be approximately a factor of ten higher than for the detectors currently installed in the LHC experiments. One option for radiation tolerant detectors are 3D silicon detectors with columnar electrodes penetrating into the silicon bulk. This article reports results of beam test measurements performed with 3D-DDTC (Double-Sided, Double Type Column) silicon strip detectors, where the columns do not pass through the detector completely. The devices were produced by IMB-CNM (Barcelona, Spain) and by FBK-irst (Trento, Italy). Important properties like space-resolved charge collection and efficiency are investigated. The planned upgrade to the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the Super-LHC (sLHC) will increase its luminosity by a factor of ten. This necessitates the development of silicon tracking detectors that are significantly more radiation resistant than the ones employed at the LHC. Currently, new detector technologies are being developed to cope with the increased levels of radiation damage at the sLHC. A possible radiation hard option for silicon short strip devices (SSD) in the inner layers of sLHC trackers are 3-D detectors with rows of columnar electrodes processed into the bulk material. These are joined together to form strips. While the excellent radiation hardness of this design has been proven before in lab experiments, a 3-D SSD prototype has now been investigated for the first time in a beam test with pions of a nominal energy of 180 GeV. The use of analog LHC-speed electronics, a beam telescope and time-resolved measurements allowed for detailed studies of the signal behavior on the hit strip and its neighboring strips. Charge collection and efficiency were as well measured with respect to time and point of incidence of the beam particles on the detector. The luminosity upgrade of the large hadron collider (LHC), the sLHC, will constitute an extremely challenging radiation environment for tracking detectors. With respect to the LHC, large improvements in radiation hardness are required. In this paper, we investigated the expected radiation hardness of the 3-D-design, where rows of 3-D-columns are etched in substrate material and joined together to form strips. To investigate the feasibility of 3-D silicon strip detectors (SSD) for the sLHC, we have built prototype modules using 3-D single type column (3-D-STC) strip detectors with short strips and front-end electronics from the present ATLAS SemiConductor Tracker (SCT). The modules were tested with a beta source setup before and after irradiation to sLHC fluences with 26 MeV protons. We report on the performance of these 3-D-modules, compare it to the results prior to irradiation, and draw conclusions about options for using 3-D SSD detectors for tracking at the sLHC. We report on the latest results from the development of 3-D silicon radiation detectors at Fondazione Bruno Kessler of Trento (FBK), Italy (formerly ITC-IRST). Building on the results obtained from previous devices (3-D Single-Type-Column), a new detector concept has been defined, namely 3-D-DDTC (Double- sided Double-Type Column), which involves columnar electrodes of both doping types, etched from alternate wafer sides, stopping a short distance (d) from the opposite surface. Simulations prove that, if d is kept small with respect to the wafer thickness, this approach can yield charge collection properties comparable to those of standard 3-D detectors, with the advantage of a simpler fabrication process. Two wafer layouts have been designed with reference to this technology, and two fabrication runs have been performed. Technological and design aspects are reported in this paper, along with simulation results and initial results from the characterization of detectors and test structures belonging to the first 3-D-DDTC batch. A numerical model for the analysis and design of S-band erbium-doped fiber amplifiers has been developed. The model is able to accurately predict the amplifier performances by taking into account the amplified spontaneous emission suppression due to the bending, as well as leakage losses of the fiber used as active medium. The model has been validated by comparing numerical and experimental data of bending loss, amplifier gain, and noise figure of an S-band optical amplifier based on a depressed-cladding erbium-doped fiber. A good agreement has been verified by varying fiber bending radius, input signal power, and wavelength. The model has been then applied to the optimization of the amplifier performances for wavelength-division multiplexer applications. The numerical results show that 20-25 dB gain can be achieved over a 25-30 nm range centered in a different part of the S-band from 1460 to 1525 nm, just by changing the bending radius and the length of a depressed-cladding fiber. The amplification properties of different photonic crystal fibers have been studied by means of a full vector finite-element modal formulation combined with a population and propagation rate equation solver. A honeycomb as well as a cobweb photonic crystal fiber have been considered. The consequences of the defect dimension and the dopant radius on the field intensity distribution as well as the overlap integrals have been analyzed. Results demonstrate that a proper photonic crystal fiber design can be usefully exploited in order to obtain active fibers with superior characteristics compared to standard step index ones. In particular, photonic crystal fibers open up the possibility of a gain medium with highly flexible geometric, dispersion, and amplifying characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Perturbations to the ideal cross section of photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) are introduced in order to investigate their performance as a function of the structural fluctuations which may occur during fabrication. The effects of the cross-section geometry perturbations on dispersion characteristics like dispersion parameter and differential group delay are presented and discussed. A holey fiber (HF), having very complex hole geometry, is studied by means of a numerical simulator for modal analysis based on the finite-element method (FEM). Polarization and dispersion properties as well as the full vector field distribution of the fundamental mode are investigated.
