In recent years, business on the Internet has exponentially increased. Consequently, the deployment and management of business applications on the Internet is becoming more and more complex, which requires the development of new Internet architectures suitable to efficiently run these business applications. The authors present a novel, revolutionary ASP (Application Service Provider) approach implemented by CyLex Systems in deploying document management systems.

We present a performance analysis of two architectures for Internet host mobility management, namely, mobile IP and session layer mobility management (SLM). The mobile IP architecture is designed with the principle that the fixed Internet hosts should remain unmodified while only the underlying IP routing infrastructure should change. By contrast, SLM requires no changes to the existing IP infrastructure as well as the transport protocols but only modifications to the session layer protocols and the applications at the end hosts. We compare the performance advantages of the end-to-end mobility scheme with the network-layer mobility, scheme, and prove by experiments that the end-to-end scheme, i.e. SLM, is a better solution for host mobility in many situations.

As discussed elsewhere in these proceedings, the Internet addressing architecture is facing a number of challenges. In this note, we briefly describe how the host identity protocol could counter some of those challenges.

In this paper we investigate the performance of Internet group management protocol version 3 (IGMPv3) and real time transport protocol (RTP) for various scenarios. For this purpose, a network simulator is developed using C++. As it is important to evaluate protocol performances under realistic conditions, the simulation models and network traffic models that are used in the simulations are developed to reflect real life behavior. The simulation models are verified and the performance results obtained are compared with the past studies.

As the Internet becomes pervasive, the vulnerability of some fundamental design aspects of the Internet has also become significant. Among which, denial-of-service (DoS) and distributed DoS (DDoS) pose significant problems, as they are disruptive to the useful traffics and are hard to prevent. One solution consists in instituting accountability, which hold the attackers accountable for the attack. The key issue is to identify the real sources of the attacks and attackers use spoofed IP address to hide their actual network location. However, the Internet architecture does not provide intrinsic support for identifying the real sources of IP packets. Numerous mechanisms have been proposed to traceback the real sources. Most of such networks have been addressing the IP version 4. In this paper, we address the issues of IP traceback in the context of IPv6 and mobile IPv6. This paper provides a detailed analysis of these issues and problems. The main problem lies with the transformations that are introduced by IPv6 and mobile IPv6 protocols, namely tunneling and addresses manipulation. We then propose a solution, including new ICMPv6 messages for traceback co-ordination, to facilitate the traceback mechanism.

TetherNet is a system for dynamically relocating Internet subnets. It provides real Internet service consisting of real IP addresses, and forward and reverse DNS, even behind NAT boxes. TetherNet has been used to support demos at numerous DARPA PI meetings, and provides on-demand infrastructure for real network experiments.

The Internet has grown rapidly in China since 1995. The number of Internet users in China has doubled nearly every six months since, reaching 46 million up to now. Consequently, a huge volume of IP addresses is needed and imperative. On the other hand, mobile communication has been popularized in China with remarkable high speed. There are about 200 million mobile users, who would be mobile IP users potentially. Therefore, IPv6 would be a key technology and an important chance for China with a big population to obtain more needed IP addresses, and to develop applications based on mobile IP. In this paper the significance of IPv6 for China and the reason for a huge potential IT market are explained. Several IPv6 projects from 1998 to the present are introduced. The achievements of IPv6 development including test-beds, services and research are described.

With the rapid growth of Internet applications, IA, and 3G wireless communications, the requirement of IP addresses is beyond our imagination. Ipv4, the most common Internet protocol we are using today, is unable to satisfy the explosive requirements in the future. It has been predicted that the IPv4 addresses will totally be exhausted around 2005-2015. This eager starvation points out the strong requirement of next generation Internet protocol - IPv6. Besides, the support of mobility, security, and multimedia QoS are the other reasons for the deployment of the IPv6 protocol. This paper describes the IPv6 deployment and testbed as well as many ongoing IPv6 related projects in Taiwan, such as network-processor based IPv6 gigabit switches, building up a native IPv6 backbone for applications, all IPv6 networks, and mobile IPv6 network environment.

The adoption of the IPv4 protocol in wireless technologies has considerably increased the number of hosts that can potentially access the global Internet. The pressure for more IP addresses and the almost exhaustion of the IPv4 address space has raised again the interest in the IPv6 protocol. This paper describes an approach for implementing wireless networks with global Internet connectivity using private IPv4 addresses and transition mechanisms published by IETF. The approach described in this paper is called Transparent IPv6. It consists of virtually assigning IPv6 addresses to private IPv4 hosts without modifying end-user devices. The mobile hosts with virtual IPv6 addresses are fully addressable through the global IPv4 Internet by using IPv6 addresses or fully qualified domain names (FQDN). As shown in the paper, it permits the deployment of mobile networks with global Internet connectivity without requiring public IPv4 addresses.

The mobile Internet protocol has been proposed by the IETF to support portable IP addresses for mobile devices that often change their network access points to the Internet. In the basic Mobile IP protocol, datagrams sent from wired or wireless hosts and destined for the mobile host that is away from home have to be routed through the home agent. Nevertheless, datagrams sent from mobile hosts to wired hosts can be routed directly. This asymmetric routing, called "triangle routing", is often far from optimal and "route optimization" has been proposed to address this problem. In this paper, we present the implementation of a "route optimization" extension to Mobile IP in the ns-2 simulator. We illustrate simulations of the Mobile IP with route optimization with simulation scenarios, parameters, and simulation results.

Today's Internet services are commonly built over TCP, the standard Internet connection-oriented reliable transport protocol. The endpoint naming scheme of TCP, based on network layer (IP) addresses, creates an implicit binding between a service and the IP address of a server providing it, throughout the lifetime of a client connection. This makes a TCP client prone to all adverse conditions that may affect the server endpoint or the internetwork in between, after the connection is established: congestion or failure in the network, server overloaded, failed or under DoS attack. Studies that quantify the effects of network stability and route availability demonstrate that connectivity failures can significantly impact Internet services. As a result, although highly available servers can be deployed, sustaining continuous service remains a problem. We propose cooperative service model, in which a pool of similar servers, possibly geographically distributed across the Internet, cooperate in sustaining a service by migration of client connections within the pool. The control traffic between servers, needed to support migrated connections, can be carried either over the Internet or over a private network. From client's viewpoint, at any point during the lifetime of its service session, the remote endpoint of its connection may transparently migrate between servers.

In this paper, we describe an experimental study of Internet topological stability and the origins of failure in Internet protocol backbones. The stability of end-to-end Internet paths is dependent both on the underlying telecommunication switching system, as well as the higher level software and hardware components specific to the Internet's packet-switched forwarding and routing architecture. Although a number of earlier studies have examined failures in the public telecommunication system, little attention has been given to the characterization of Internet stability. We provide analysis of the stability of major paths between Internet Service Providers based on the experimental instrumentation of key portions of the Internet infrastructure. We describe unexpectedly high levels of path fluctuation and an aggregate low mean time between failures for individual Internet paths. We also provide a case study of the network failures observed in a large regional Internet backbone. We characterize the type, origin, frequency and duration of these failures.

Many networking applications become feasible and required with the popular use of Internet. We present an Interactive Digital Radio Station, which is called IDRS, over Internet. Several architecture and synchronization methods are proposed to solve the communication problems that only occur during the digital radio multicasting. In order to perform the communication between DJ and audience, two operation modes, which are called the DJ mode and the Call-in mode, are defined. Related technique issues and the corresponding system development are presented in detail.

The system Progress facilitates the easy provision and usage of computational services via the Internet. Moreover it offers powerful value added services in this area. The concept of plans can be used to combine computational services located at different hosts to more powerful services. In this article, we demonstrate how this concept can be coupled with other Internet technologies like Java to achieve a visual programming environment for large-scale Internet programming.

Current mobile IP solutions like IETF Mobile IP involve efficiency problem especially when the mobile hosts usually move within a specific area and communicate with each other. The overhead of registration and packet transmission would congest the Internet. This can cause the delay, especially during the periods of congestion on the Internet. However the optimization proposal has to replace the software on every components of the Internet. The paper proposes a compromise scheme to eliminate the overhead to the Internet by making the border router aware of the mobility, which improves the efficiency within a local area network.

The Mobile IP protocol allows transparent routing of IP datagrams on the Internet. Each mobile node is identified by its home address disregarding its current location in the Internet. While away from home, a mobile node is associated with a care-of address which gives information about its current location. Mobile IP specifies how a mobile node registers with its home agent and how the home agent routes datagrams to the mobile node through a tunnel. The authors first outline the Mobile IP protocol and its extension mechanism defined for carrying information. They then present the architecture of their working implementation which is based on objected-oriented methodology. Finally some implementation considerations and challenges for Mobile IP are investigated.

IP multicast has proven to be very good for many-to-many multimedia communications like audio and video conferencing. However there are only a few Internet service providers offering it as a true Internet service to their customers. The reason is that nowadays, IP multicast has many issues like billing, authentication, security protection against malicious people and so on. In fact, DoS attacks can be easily caused in IP multicast-enabled networks. We describe how to solve some of these problems.

The service scenario which integrates traditional telecommunications and the Internet is one of the most promising in near/medium term. In order to be able to provide services within this scenario, the service providers must provide themselves with a platform, which effectively supports all the service aspects from creation to deployment, to efficient execution, to the areas of management. The objective of this paper is threefold. Firstly, we give the important features of Internet telephony compared to the traditional PSTN. Secondly, we use the Internet to construct several telephony services. Thirdly, we overview the Internet multimedia conferencing architecture.

A common requirement to improve the end-to-end performance on the Internet is critical because the Internet becomes an infrastructure of our daily life. There have been many research studies to understand characteristics of the inside of the Internet and to try to improve the end-to-end performance with caching technologies in application programs. This paper proposes a new framework to improve the end-to-end performance on the Internet. The approach taken in this paper is to establish an alternative path between end-to-end hosts by the installation of rely hosts at the intermediate. The major advantage for previous caching studies can be easily applicable to all applications on a network path. The paper also describes the results of the experiment which measured a path quality of the intermediate link to select the better alternative path than the original path. This framework can be easily extended to construct a virtual network for the better performance on the Internet. The network provides the better performance for all Internet users.

Since is development a couple of years ago, the Internet has grown immensely. Nowadays the Internet is no longer a communication tool dedicated to universities and governments for research purposes and low cost communication. In a period of more or less 5 years, the Internet has become a very familiar and popular tool. However, the growth in the number of Internet users, the number of hosts connected to the World Wide Web, and the number of companies establishing a Web presence has brought to light a weakness in the Internet protocol (IPv4): the network address space is not adequate to sustain its continued growth into the next millennium. This paper explores an emerging architecture of the Internet based on network address translation (NAT) and the alternatives thereof. To this end, it presents and compares various mechanisms for alleviating the network address shortage by separating public and private address spaces. The benefits and shortcomings of NAT are described, as well as a new network address reuse mechanism known as Realm specific IP (RSIP). Furthermore, this paper extensively describes improvements to the latter mechanism which is becoming very popular. Finally, the paper explains how network address reuse technologies are about to break into the adoption of the newly designed Internet protocol, IP version 6.
