This paper proposes a model that relates public funding, company size, technological intensity, permanent R&D, business group membership and corporate strategy to the likelihood that firms will cooperate in R&D. To test the validity of the model, we built a database of Spanish manufacturing firms with innovation activities based on the ‘Survey on Technological Innovation of Enterprises 2000’, conducted by the National Statistics Institute (INE) of Spain. The test showed that all variables have a positive effect on the likelihood of R&D cooperation, but medium-sized enterprises and enterprise groups that belong to the EU and outside of the EU showed no significant influence on the probability of cooperation.

Based on the data of the ‘survey on technological innovation 1998–2000’, a database with the Spanish manufacturing companies that make innovation activities was constructed. Later, we formulated a model, in which the corporative strategy, the differentiation strategy, the costs leadership strategy, the organisational structure and the absorption capacity of ID in addition, its corresponding relation with the probability of cooperation is not significant.
