Abstract

The article discusses the origin of legal pluralism in personal status disputes in Egypt based on religion and nationality. Topics discussed include the role of the Ottoman millet system in institutionalizing legal pluralism based on religion, the Egyptian judicial system which is composed of several courts including the Consular courts, Sharia courts and national courts, and Egyptian choice of law rules for solving international and interpersonal conflicts of laws relating to personal status.
