Recent reviews of the emapthy literature have revealed that nearly half of the published studies on empathy employed an empathy measure that did not align precisely with the theoretical definition the author provided. This may occur because researchers might not know what each published empathy scale actually measures. The present research begins to address this problem by reporting a large set of correlates for five different empathy scales to enable researchers to review the interpersonal traits and abilities each scale predicted. Participants (N = 182) completed the Davis IRI and the empirically derived Hogan Empathy Scale (HES). Each empathy scale produced its own unique pattern of correlates with empathy related traits that more or less supported each scale's description. However, none of the five scales reliably predicted empathy related abilities. We discuss the importance of examining a scale's predictive validity over its reliability, face-validity, popularity, or name.

The war enabled the regime to return poorly informed citizens to political life while serving as an excuse to repress regime opponents.

Describing that many people perform a certain behavior has been known to increase people's behavioral intentions. However, the underlying premise is that the behavior must be high in prevalence. The present study examined whether describing low-prevalence behaviors (static norm) and framing low-prevalence behaviors as increasing in popularity across time (dynamic norm) may increase behavioral intentions in the context of getting the flu shot and eating less red meat. In addition, the study aimed to examine whether other behavioral antecedents could moderate the effect of viewing these normative messages. An experiment that randomly assigned participants to view either dynamic norm messages, static norm messages, and no messages (control) was conducted. Results indicated that for the behavior of eating less red meat, viewing a static norm message backfired while viewing a dynamic norm message did not. Moreover, the effect of viewing low-prevalence norm messages was moderated by other behavioral antecedents such as, current and future injunctive norm perceptions and attitude. These findings contribute to the theoretical and practical understanding of utilizing low-prevalence norms for persuasion.

Sit-stand workstations are growing in popularity, however limited guidelines exist regarding optimal schedules of sitting and standing. This was the first known study to observe sit-stand workstation schedules when postural change is based on maintaining musculoskeletal discomfort within 'acceptable' levels. Fourteen healthy adults new to sit-stand workstations completed computer-based work at a sit-stand desk for half a workday. Participants changed between standing and sitting postures each time discomfort reached the maximum acceptable threshold. On average, the amount of standing and sitting was greatest in the first standing (median 40 minutes, interquartile range 40 minutes) and sitting (median 30 minutes, interquartile range 115 minutes) bouts. Average durations spent standing and sitting were lower in all consecutive bouts. Stand-sit ratios indicated an equal amount of standing to sitting or somewhat less standing. The schedules had substantial inter-participant variability. Future studies should consider that optimal schedules may vary with regard to time and be individual-specific.Refined guidelines are needed regarding effective use of sit-stand workstations. This study proposed a novel method of investigating potentially optimal schedules, in which postural change was based on reaching a threshold of musculoskeletal discomfort. The findings suggest that an optimal schedule may vary with time and be individual-specific.

Basketball is known for the vast amount of data collected for each player, team, game, and season. In this study, we continued our previous study published in 2020 Computational Collective Intelligence (12th International Conference, ICCCI 2020, Da Nang, Vietnam, November 30 – December 3, 2020, Proceedings) reviewing some important factors to predict players’ future performance and being selected in an All-Star game, one of the most prestigious events, of National Basket Association league. Besides traditional Machine Learning, Deep Learning is also applied in this study for prediction purpose. However, compared to traditional Machine Learning, Deep Learning’s performance is not as good for our dataset. It is understandable when our data are relatively small and structured with a few predictor variables which limited Deep Learning’s ability to deal with a vast amount of Big Data. Our final results, through both Regression and Classification Analysis, indicated that scoring is the most important factor from the primary players for any team and also basketball fan’s favourable style.

Travel vlogging is gaining popularity and studying the practice of travel vlogging can provide insights into tourist behaviour, communication, and management. The notion of practice was adopted as the theoretical base and the analytical framework. A qualitative approach was employed, including interviews with 12 strategically sampled vlogger tourists and analysis of their vlog productions. The findings suggested that travel vlogging is a practice bundle constructed by four sequential practices; designing, filming, editing, and posting. Through a collaborative relationship, the four practices achieve the shared meanings of self-concept expressions, a sense of documentation and ritual, and pleasures in vlogging. Moreover, travel vlogging affects tourist experiences; it creates a self-other divide, mediates the experiences of the 'self', and moderates the experiences of the 'others'. Such impacts vary across the dimensions of travel stages, materiality, and engagement. Theoretically, the study offers fresh insights into the practice of vlogging and the creation of travel vlog content; pragmatically, understandings and implications for quality experiences of vlogger tourists are addressed.

Background: Fitness testing is frequently conducted in school-based physical education. However, researchers dispute if fitness testing should be discontinued or, when appropriately implemented, has value. In Singapore, the National Physical Fitness Award test develops students' knowledge and skills to assess, maintain, and improve their fitness levels. Nonethless, physical activity levels have not improved, and the obesity rate has increased in schools. Improvements cannot be made judiciously due to limited research on fitness testing meaningfulness and young people's views. Purpose: This study examined Singapore students' fitness testing perceptions across three school stages, between gender groups, and their identified motivational profiles. Method: A survey package was administered to 549 Singapore students (328 females, 221 males) recruited from primary, secondary, and pre-university (age range 11-19 years) to comprehend their fitness testing perceptions (motivations, attitudes, and the popularity of fitness test items). Confirmatory factor analysis assessed the factorial validity of Singapore students' responses to the adapted questionnaires on fitness testing motivations and attitudes. Between-subjects MANOVAs then examined the differences in students' fitness testing motivations, attitudes, and test items' popularity separately. A two-step cluster analysis categorised the students using their identified motivational profiles. Subsequently, another set of between-subjects MANOVAs verified if the fitness testing perceptions were significantly different among the clusters. Results: Findings revealed that students' fitness testing perceptions were more positive at primary than secondary and pre-university levels; female students' fitness testing perceptions were more negative than male students, distinctly at secondary. Middle-distance running was the least popular test item, notably with secondary females. Conversely, PE teachers had positively influenced pre-university females' fitness testing perceptions compared to secondary females. Conclusions: Singapore students' fitness testing perceptions were generally positive. Students' experience of enjoyment in fitness testing was found to be a key factor for their positive perceptions of fitness testing. More pragmatic support from PE teachers would be required for the secondary female students to promote positive fitness testing perceptions.

Bagru printing is a traditional hand block printing method that is more than 300 years old. The printing is done using natural dyes. The colors are achieved through mixtures of flowers, tree barks, roots and clay. Online journal clubs (JCs) have increased during the COVID-19 pandemic with the resulting social distancing and popularity of online platforms. This systematic review aims to explore current evidence of their use/benefits for clinicians and compare their value to face-to-face (F2F) JCs.PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched systematically, adhering to PRISMA guidelines. Articles were included if they involved clinicians in medical/surgical populations, using an online JC assessing utility, experience and educational value. Quality assessment was undertaken using MERSQI.Fifteen studies were included with findings synthesised into five themes: critical appraisal skills, satisfaction/value, accessibility/environment, evidence-based practice, and preference of online JC. Studies revealed high satisfaction and equivocal or increased preference of online JCs compared to F2F due to ease of access, diverse participation, and less time/cost spent travelling. Online JCs were found to be educationally valuable, aiding development of critical appraisal skills, and promoting change in practice. Disadvantages included lack of discussion intensity, technical issues, and limited interaction on some platforms.Online JCs are educationally valuable with high satisfaction rates and distinct advantages/disadvantages to F2F JCs. More high-quality studies are required to elucidate the ideal format to further improve their educational value, utility, and adoption.

Factor strategies have gained growing popularity in industry with the fast development of machine learning. Usually, multi-factors are fed to an algorithm for some cross-sectional return predictions, which are further used to construct a long-short portfolio. In this study, we propose a new listwise learn-to-rank loss function which aims to emphasize both the top and the bottom of a rank list. Our loss function, motivated by the long-short strategy, is endogenously shift-invariant and can be viewed as a direct generalization of ListMLE. Under different transformation functions, our loss can lead to consistency with binary classification loss or permutation level 0-1 loss. A probabilistic explanation for our model is also given as a generalized Plackett-Luce model. Based on a dataset of 68 factors in China A-share market from 2006 to 2019, our empirical study has demonstrated the strength of our method which achieves an out-of-sample annual return of 38% with the Sharpe ratio being 2.

Social media users are not just potential consumers of political content they are also potential producers and distributors. In this paper, we test whether political predispositions or the popularity of posts best explains users’ engagement with political content on Facebook. Using a large-scale survey deployed in Denmark, we utilize a 2 × 2 × 3 survey experiment that manipulates the partisan sponsor of a political message, the number of likes attributed to that message, and the nature of the comments attached to that post. Our findings indicate that individuals are most likely to like, comment, and share political content that aligns with their political predispositions, as the choice to like, share and comment political content on Facebook is largely unaffected by likes and comments from other users. Though we recognize the dangers of obstinacy in democratic discourse, we are somewhat assured by these findings, as it shows that those who engage with political content do not follow a blind herd mentality.

The design of gastronomic experiences based on consumer opinion (co-creation) can contribute to improving the online gastronomic image and the overall image of destinations. By evaluating and sharing their experience on social media, the visitor expresses different levels of satisfaction and loyalty towards the destination. This user-generated content (UGC) represents useful information for analysing the perception of gastronomic experiences and the formation of online gastronomic images. The semiotic model used here considers three semantic aspects of the gastronomic image to analyse gastronomic experiences through big data analytics. The model was applied to two regions with different gastronomic cultures: Taiwan (Asia) and Catalonia (Europe) and four types of experiences. A total of 17,214 online travel reviews (OTRs) from 2008 to 2019 were selected from TripAdvisor's 'things to do' section, which includes various tours and gastronomic activities that are different from typical dining experiences in restaurants. The results highlight the growth of OTRs before the COVID-19 pandemic, the high satisfaction of the participants in the reviewed activities, and differences in popularity and attractiveness according to activity, category and region. The findings also showcase notable differences in destination branding and marketing strategies between the regions.

Since the memoir boom in the 1990s, non-fiction forms have continued to increase in popularity and market share, and hybrid forms such as autofiction and semi-autobiographical novels have established a pronounced place in literary culture. Yet many creative writing programmes remain focussed on fiction, reflecting students’ overwhelming interest in pursuing the novel as a form, and reluctance to see their own lived experiences as material for creative work. However, rather than seeing the novel and memoir as competing or dichotomous forms, we suggest that the trend in literary culture is to witness a collapsing of these distinctions in favour of hybrid works which sit on a spectrum of perceived truth claims. This article outlines a pedagogical response to a gap that exists between students’ understandings of the novel and memoir genres, and the increasing complication and hybridity emerging between those forms. We outline the pedagogical theory informing our approach, which emphasises complex and hybrid thinking, experimentation and reflective authorship practice. We argue that teaching novel and memoir in tandem encourages students to view life writing and fiction as existing on a spectrum of formal possibilities rather than fixed generic types, and cultivates students’ awareness of these developments in the field.
