Unexpected ring closure of 2-(1-(4-fluorophenyl)-5-methyl-1H-1,2,3-triazole-4-carbonyl)-N-phenylhydrazine-1-carbothioamide (3) on exposure to sulfuric acid at room temperature for an extended duration (12 h) gave 4-((5-(1-(4-fluorophenyl)-5-methyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)amino)benzenesulfonic acid (4) in 75% yield. The use of sulfuric acid led to sulfonation at the para-position of the benzene ring in phenyl isothiocyanate. The crystal structure comprises two independent types of molecules of 4 and two disordered ether solvent molecules. The synthesized benzenesulfonic acid inhibits the growth of both Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli and its activity was comparable to those obtained for ampicillin and vancomycin.

Methods for the synthesis of 2-amino-4-thiazolidinones and their chemical properties are reviewed for the first time. 2-Amino-4-thiazolidinones are synthetically versatile substrates, as they can be used for the synthesis of a large variety of biologically active compounds, such as thiazolodihydropyrazoles, thiazolotriazines, and thiazolotetrahydropyrimidones, and as a raw material for drug synthesis. The high reactivity of amino and active methylene groups next to the carbonyl of the thiazolidin ring represents useful targets for many organic reactions.

1-Phenyl-3-(2-thienyl)-1H-pyrazole-5-carbohydrazide 4 was prepared from 2-acetylthio- phene by reaction with diethyl oxalate and phenylhydrazine followed by hydrazine hydrate. The reaction of the hydrazide 4 with phthalic anhydride, aromatic aldehydes, and alkene derivatives gave imide 5, hydrazones 6a–d, and bis-pyrazoles 7 and 8, respectively, while its reaction with phenyl isothiocyanate led to thiosemicarbazide 9. The reaction of the latter with ethyl bromoacetate and phenacylbromide afforded 4-thiazolidinone 10 and 1,3-thiazole 11 derivatives, respectively. Reaction of 4 with carbon disulfide in the presence of potassium hydroxide gave potassium hydrazinecarbodithioate derivative 12, which was used as a starting material in the preparation of 2-thioxothiazol-3(2H)-yl)-5-(2-thienyl)-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxamide 14; 1,3,4-thiadiazol-2(3H)-ylidene)-1-phenyl-5-(2-thienyl)-1H-pyrazole-3-carbohydrazides 16a–c; 4-amino-5-thioxo-4,5-dihydro-1H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)pyrazole derivative 13; Schiff bases 17a,b; and 1...
