Low-income older adults living in public housing are at heightened risk for substance misuse. This study identified the prevalence of alcohol misuse among older public housing residents (n = 187) and explored predictors of problem drinking. Including weekly drinking levels and binge drinking, 23% of the sample engaged in problem drinking behaviors. Logistic regression analysis revealed that race, gender, employment status, years smoking, and illegal drug use were significant predictors of problem drinking. No residents were receiving substance abuse treatment. As the number of older adults increase, training social workers to assess and treat alcohol misuse in older adults is critical.

The Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction is known for its multidisciplinary approach to the study of human sexuality. Founded by Dr. Alfred C. Kinsey (1894–1956) in 1947, the Institute has long held a research collection consisting of books, journals, magazines, films, fine art, artifacts, and photographs. These materials were used by Kinsey and his research team for their groundbreaking study of sexual behavior, which led to the publication of two books, Sexual Behavior in the Human Male and Sexual Behavior in the Human Female. Photographs were initially collected to provide visual data for scientific examination of sexual activity. In recent decades, the primary collecting focus has shifted from commercial and amateur erotic images to fine art photography. Today the photograph collection is used mostly by the Institute’s curators for public exhibitions and publications, and by scholars.

In the era of TVIII, characterized by deregulation, multimedia conglomeration, expansion and increased competition, branding has emerged as a central industrial practice. Focusing on the case of HBO, a particularly successful brand in TVIII, this article argues that branding can be understood not simply as a feature of television networks, but also as a characteristic of television programmes. It begins by examining how the network as brand is constructed and conveyed to the consumer through the use of logos, slogans and programmes. The role of programmes in the construction of brand identity is then complicated by examining the sale of programmes abroad, where programmes can be seen to contribute to the brand identity of more than one network. The article then goes on to examine programme merchandising, an increasingly central strategy in TVIII. Through an analysis of different merchandising strategies the article argues that programmes have come to act as brands in their own right, and demonstrates that the academic study of branding not only reveals the development of new industrial practices, but also offers a way of understanding the television programme and its consumption by viewers in a period when the texts of television are increasingly extended across a range of media platforms.

DNAZ (3,3-dinitroazetidine), 1, readily undergoes nucleophilic addition reactions with electron deficient haloaromatics, cyanogen bromide, S-methyl-N-nitroisothiourea and dichloroglyoxime to afford novel, energetic 1-substituted-3,3-dinitroazetidines. N-Nitrosation of DNAZ readily occurs, and Mannich condensations of DNAZ with poly-nitroalcohols are also described. The synthesis and properties of the energetic materials derived from these reactions will be discussed.

This article discusses the development and presentation of a high school death education unit within an elective psychology class. The death unit curriculum is examined, unit strengths are analyzed, and sample evaluations of students, presenters, school board members, parents, and other members of the community are presented. The conclusion reached is that this unit, although not inclusive of all death-related topics, serves as a valuable tool for students as they experience any type of loss that causes grief.
