This article builds on prior research demonstrating that intensive faculty training in alcohol and other drug (AOD) identification and treatment methods can result in increases in AOD knowledge and teaching efficacy. We provide examples of how faculty participants in the Alcohol and Other Drugs Education Program have adapted their teaching in clinical practice, research methods, and addiction specialty courses as a result of participation in our immersion-based training program. Examples from 3 schools provide ideas for teaching innovations and serve as templates for faculty interested in advancing their teaching and the integration of AOD-related content into the social work curriculum.

The Newlyn Tidal Observatory is the most important sea level station in the United Kingdom. It commenced operations in 1915 as part of the Second Geodetic Levelling of England and Wales, and the mean sea level determined from the tide gauge during the first six years (May 1915–April 1921) defined Ordnance Datum Newlyn (ODN) which became the national height datum for the whole of Great Britain. The 100 years of sea level data now available have contributed significantly to many studies in oceanography, geology, and climate change. This paper marks the centenary of this important station by reviewing the sea level (and, more recently, detailed land level) measurements and Newlyn's contributions to UK cartography, geodesy and sea-level science in general. Recommendations are made on how sea and land level measurements at Newlyn might be enhanced.

A research team of Black and White, male and female, student and faculty members applied rhetorical analysis to interviews conducted with low‐income African American young men. The team identified and examined major themes that emerged as young African American men attending an inner city parochial high school discuss school life. Several patterns emerged that distinguished more academically successful students from the less. Surprisingly, some tendencies that might have been expected as distinguishing characteristics do not emerge as defining qualities.

Pulsed laser induced surface damage experiments were made on the cleaved (001) face of (—)2-(α-methylbenzylamino)-5-nitropyridine (MBANP) crystals using a pulse length of 25 ns FWHM. The highest single pulse damage threshold value was 24·2 J cm−2 at a wavelength of 1064 nm for light polarized along the crystallographic a axis, whereas the lowest was 1·8 J cm−2 at 532 nm for light polarized along the crystallographic b axis. The extent of the mechanical distortion of the (001) crystal plane consequent upon the absorption of a 25 ns FWHM, 10 J cm−2 pulse from a Nd:YAG laser operating at the wavelength 1064 nm has been measured by a non-destructive and non-invasive technique.

Observations of second harmonic generation and ferroelectric behaviour in in vitro biological structures are reported. The scales of the Indian freshwater fish (Catla catla, Cytrinidae) have been found to have nonlinear optical properties, exhibiting frequency doubling (second harmonic generation, SHG). In contrast to this behaviour it has not proved possible to obtain SHG signals from the scales of British freshwater fish (Roach, Rutilus rutilus L). Experiments were also conducted on scales treated with various organic solvents and on dry collagen. Optical transmission and infra-red spectra have also been measured and the latter indicate that the scales obtained from both species have nearly the same composition and are collagen rich. The dry collagen itself gives rise to an SHG signal which is about eight times as intense as that from the Indian fish scales. The fish scales and collagen are found to be ferroelectric at room temperature.

The linear optical properties of the organic molecular crystal (+)2-(δ-methylbenzylamino)-5-nitropyridine (MBA-NP) are investigated. The specific rotation associated with this chiral molecule has been determined as + 239.11°. The effective transparency range for nonlinear optical applications was found to be 465–1500 nm, with a 10 nm dichroism in the high frequency absorption edge position. MBA-NP displays angular dispersion to a larger extent than any other known organic nonlinear material, a 200 nm change in the wavelength of the incident light causing a 40° rotation of the dielectric axes. The linear refractive indices of MBA-NP have been determined using the minimum deviation technique, Maker fringe spacings and phase-matching directions. The principal refractive index dispersion curves are fitted with a Sellmeier equation and the coefficients of this equation are presented for the first time.

Ultrasonic, piezoelectric and dielectric measurements on single crystals of (–)-2-a-α-methylbenzylamino-5-nitropyridine (MBANP) are reported. Longitudinal and transverse velocity measurements in six crystal directions were used to calculate the 13 elastic constants. Dielectric measurements were carried out in four directions and compared with refractive index measurements carried out at optical frequencies. MBANP exhibited piezoelectric coefficients of similar magnitude to those found in lithium niobate. These data are discussed in terms of the intermolecular interactions occurring in the crystal structure.

An assessment has been made of the linear electro‐optic effect in single crystals of NMBA. Half‐wave voltages of 1.1–2.8 kV have been determined in the spectral range 488–632.8 nm. Such low values are appropriate in a material which shows well aligned molecular dipoles in the crystalline state and define its potential for use as a modulator material.

A general theory for the calculation of the elastic constants of molecular crystals has been developed within the pair-potential rigid-molecule approximation. Interatomic rather than intermolecular interactions are considered explicitly, thus taking more angular dependence into account. Model calculations for CO2 have been carried out, the results being in good agreement with those obtained using the crystal packing programme PCK83, with the same set of potentials. Both methods yield lower values than the corresponding intermolecular potential calculations for the c 11, c 12 and c 44 tensor components of CO2.

Large (5 × 3 × 3 cm3) crystals of the organic nonlinear optical material MBA-NP have been prepared by growth from solution, in an optically and structurally highly perfect state. Oriented cut and polished specimens were examined by the Maker fringe technique at a wavelength of 1·064 µm. Analysis of the data yielded d 22 as 69 × d11 quartz with a corresponding coherence length of 2 µm. A large rotation of the X and Z dielectric axes with wavelength (30° over 200 nm) was observed. Type I phase-matched second-harmonic generation (SHG) was recorded. For the 1·064 µm dielectric axis set and a (010) faced crystal, phase matched SHG was observed for rotation about X to an angle of incidence of 45°. This angle is very sensitive to the correct alignment of dielectric axes and the effect of its misalignment was investigated.

Large single crystals (5 × 4 × 1 cm3) of the noncentrosymmetric, monoclinic form of the organic crystal (NMBA) have been prepared by seeded growth from supersaturated solutions. Optically clear volumes permitted the preparation of polished specimens with faces parallel to the (100) and (010) directions. These were examined by the Maker fringe technique. The sections showed no dispersion of the dielectric axes with wavelength in the range 440–630 nm. The χ2 elements d11 and d23 were found to be 4 and 143 respectively relative to quartz d11. Type II phase matching was observed using 1064 nm light at and near to normal incidence to the (100) plane with an efficiency of ≈10% of that for a 2-(N,N-dimethylamino)-5-nitroacetanilide (DAN) crystal of the same thickness tested under identical conditions. Since the half angle between the molecular dipoles in the monoclinic NMBA crystal is 12°; a far from optimal angle for efficient phase matching, this lower efficiency was expected.
