On February 26, 2008, when several printed copies of the first issue of the International Journal of Digital Earth (IJDE) from Taylor & Francis arrived on my desk, my colleagues and I were very excited with the inaugural issue. IJDE the official journal of the International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE) was born both online and in printed hardcopy by the publisher, the Taylor & Francis Group, the oldest commercial journals publisher in the world and one of the leading global academic publishers founded in London in 1798.

Abstract

A novel three-step method to reduce speckle in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images is presented. First, an edge detector is used to detect the edge orientations in SAR images. Second, using a data processing method named empirical mode decomposition, the SAR image is smoothed along four directions: horizontal, vertical, left diagonal and right diagonal, respectively. Third, the SAR image is reconstructed such that if the edge direction is horizontal, the pixel smoothed along the horizontal direction is used to reconstruct the image, and so on; if an edge is not detected, the mean of the four directionally smoothed images is used to reconstruct the image. Application of this method to SAR images has shown that it is well balanced in the quality of visual appearance, mean preservation, edge preservation, and reduction of the standard deviation.

Abstract

C/X band and HH, HV, VH, VV polarization SAR data of Zhaoqing test site in southern China have been acquired in November, 1993, as part of the GlobeSAR program. These data have been processed using the PCI software (PCI Inc.) and analyzed with the support of the field investigation. This paper presents some scientific results of the SAR applications in the fields of geology, forestry, agriculture, and hydrology. Geologic experiments were conducted to study rock type dielectrics and gold mineralization zones. A forestry exploration experiment aims to investigate the forest type discrimination. The agriculture experiment is conducted to study land cover and crop type classification. The hydrology experiment is mainly for studying the river channel processes and determining the submerged area due to flooding by comparing the GlobeSAR data with CASSAR data. Abstract

The objective of this study is using the multipolarization and multifrequence airborne SAR data collected through the GlobeSAR Mission on November 20 and 21, 1993 to study the relationship between the radar backscatter intensities and the vegetation structure. The radar backscatter intensity visualization model (RBIVM) was applied to demonstrate the diversity of the radar signals from the agricultural crops and other economic plants. The effects of polarization and frequency on the radar return of agricultural features are also studied. Results show that the polarization is an important factor, as only VV polarization can distinguish euryale ferox from fish ponds, and radar backscatter of rice fields changed dramatically with the polarization. The RBIVM of vegetation shows that the radar backscatter of the vegetation changes over a wide range.
