The present study was carried out to check whether there is a decline in mangrove cover of Andhra Pradesh state, India, as cited by a few studies. The research analysed mangrove dynamics of Krishna Wildlife Sanctuary of Andhra Pradesh state, using temporal satellite data of six periods. Analysis of these data showed major changes in the mangrove areas of the sanctuary. In 1972, the mangrove cover was 82.76 km2, which then decreased to 80.47 km2 in 1981, and then further dropped to 69.52 km2 in 1990. Comparatively an area of 13.22 km2 was lost from 1972 to 1990. The area recorded in 2000 was 101.98 km2 and the positive trend of increase in mangrove areas was observed in both 2009 (138.36 km2) and in 2014 (158.16 km2). Overall, an increase of 88.64 km2 mangrove area was observed from 1990 to 2014. The study confirms the increase in mangrove cover in the state, disagreeing with the observations of decrease in mangrove cover made by other studies previously.

This article looks at the organizational culture of the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC), a research institute in Thailand. The purpose is to find out to what extent the culture affects how well the institute realizes its stated objectives, which include becoming an engine for the knowledge-driven economy of Thailand and developing the country’s infrastructure in biotechnological research. The main methodology used is a close reading analysis of the texts published by BIOTEC itself and a series of interviews of researchers and analysts who have a close working relationship with the institute. It is found that the organizational culture of BIOTEC is rather typical of a Thai bureaucratic organization, in that the emphasis seems to be more on maintaining the general status quo rather than relentlessly pursuing its vision. The article suggests that BIOTEC should instead act more as a catalyst for equality and justice through its alignment with villagers in rural areas, helping them to realize their own goals.

This article introduces a collection of methodological reflections on mobilities research, and additionally discusses the general status of methodology in the scholarship. Fast advancements on empirical and conceptual levels of mobilities studies have not been equivalently matched by efforts on the methodological front. While microsociological and phenomenological approaches are predominant in the scholarship, large‐scale studies on mobility tend not to systematically analyse research frameworks used in the process of knowledge production. The articles featured in this special section examine some of the methodological challenges and innovations arising within several topical strains of mobilities studies. This introductory article argues that multi‐scalar and critical methodologies are necessary for further expanding the analytical and interventional possibilities of a mobilities research agenda.

Malignant bowel obstruction (MBO) is a frequent complication in advanced cancer patients, especially in those with abdominal tumors. Clinical management of MBO requires a specific and individualized approach that is based on disease prognosis and the objectives of care. The global prevalence of MBO is estimated to be 3% to 15% of cancer patients. Surgery should always be considered for patients in the initial stages of the disease with a preserved general status and a single level of occlusion. Less invasive approaches such as duodenal or colonic stenting should be considered when surgery is contraindicated in obstructions at the single level. The priority of care for inoperable and consolidated MBO is to control symptoms and promote the maximum level of comfort possible. The spontaneous resolution of an inoperable obstructive process is observed in more than one third of patients. The mean survival is of no longer than 4–5 weeks in patients with consolidated MBO. Polymodal medical treatment based on a combination of glucocorticoids, strong opioids, antiemetics, and antisecretory drugs achieves very high symptomatic control. This review focuses on the epidemiological aspects, diagnosis, surgical criteria, medical management, and factors influencing the spontaneous resolution of MBO in advanced cancer patients.
