De Martino died in 1965, leaving a legacy of extensive fieldwork research in Southern Italy, original works, an incomplete manuscript (entitled La Fine del Mondo), and an impressive set of suggestions regarding theory and research methodologies that deserve further exploration. In this paper, using the well known De Martinian “principle of critical ethnocentrism”, I focus on finding relationships between the theoretical and ethnographical activity of De Martino and so‐called “post‐colonial” thought. This article, written as a foreword to the hundredth volume of the Law Reports of the Commonwealth (LRC), celebrates the growing success of these law reports published since 1985. The summer of 2009 marks the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Fred Perry, one of Britain's greatest sportsmen of the twentieth century. Perry is famous as the last British man to win Wimbledon, the first of his three successive victories coming 75 years ago in 1934. He also played a pivotal role in Britain's domination of the Davis Cup between 1933 and 1936. This article explores the paradox of Perry's career. While he became internationally renowned in the wake of his successes, during the 1930s and for many years afterwards he was largely unheralded in his homeland. Both his social background and his ruthless desire to win were at odds with the gentlemanly amateur ethos that dominated tennis before the Second World War, and it was only much later that his reputation was restored and enhanced as the years passed with no British player to emulate his achievements.

In the nineteenth century Alexander von Humboldt was acclaimed as "the sec- ond Columbus" and "the scientific discoverer of America." His prestige and fame were such that on 14 September 1869, the hundredth anniversary of his birth, a grand celebration was held with parades, speeches, concerts, and the unveiling of memorials in cities across the country. Humboldt's popularity in the United States endured for the remainder of the nine- teenth century, but he dropped from public consciousness in the twentieth century. To ac- count for the eclipse of Humboldt's fame in the United States three hypotheses are discussed: a shift in the character of scientific endeavor; the quality of Humboldt's written work; and the rise of anti-German sentiment with a concurrent rush to "de-Germanize" the United States in the early twentieth century. The last surviving descendant of the 17th century minister of the Dutch church in Norwich reached his hundredth birthday at the end of 2003 and amended a lecture which resulted in this paper. The ancestral background is that the minister, Johannes Elison, and his wife, Maria Bockenolle, were painted by Rembrandt in 1634 and the paintings were kept in Yarmouth by the family during the 18th and 19th centuries. They are now in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, whilst memorials to the family remain in the old Dutch church in Norwich.

It is indeed a joy to speak about Edgar Kant on this occasion which celebrates the hundredth anniversary of his birth. His lifepath traversed only two-thirds of this eventful century, yet he did experience directly many of its dreams and realities, the passion and pain of war and peace, of economic boom and bust, of national liberation, scientific revolutions, exile and the traumas of geopolitical transformations. The twentieth century also witnessed profound changes in practices of geography and the name of Edgar Kant deserves an honoured place as pioneer of many influential turns in the discipline. The hundredth anniversary of the United States’ bursting into the Asia‐Pacific as an imperial power provides an opportunity to look more deeply at an imperialism that continues to be extremely dynamic. When the U.S. erupted into Asia, grabbing the Philippines from Spain in 1898, it was clear that this was not an old‐style imperial power. The U.S. had itself emerged from an anti‐colonial war against Great Britain a little over a century earlier, and this fact of its birth would greatly determine its ideology and practice of imperialism. Ideology would play an important role in the U.S. imperial enterprise, far greater than it did with the European colonial powers where mission civilatrice, as in the case of France, was an afterthought, an obvious fig leaf for economic interests. Imperialism had to be legitimized to the American people. The commemorations of the hundredth year of the arrival of cinema in India staged by the Government of Maharashtra were a combination of public and semi‐public rituals inscribing the history of cinema in India onto the urban landscape of Bombay. This article examines those commemorations to show how the history of cinema becomes an arena for the state to proclaim its distinct cultural identity. The centenary commemorations are an example of how a world‐historical moment like the Lumiere screenings is appropriated by the state government to assert a particular cultural claim over the city of Bombay.

In 1963 the ORTF (French Radio) commissioned the composer Luciano Berio and the poet Edoardo Sanguineti to write a work celebrating the seven hundredth anniversary of Dante's birth. Summary In this article the author investigates the meaning of Heidegger's expression ‘final God’. These words are especially used in the so called second Magnum Opus of Heidegger, namely: Gesamtausgabe, Band 65, Beitrage zur Philosophie (Vom Ereignis), Vittorio Klostermann, Frankfurt am Main, 1989. This work, published in 1989 in commemoration of his hundredth birthday, was written between 1936 and 1938. It is a mystifying study in which Heidegger uses the word ‘Ereignis’ for the first time. This book does not present a systematic and clearly developed theme. The text is a compilation of fragments in which are a lot of repetitions. Because of these mystifying aspects it is not always clear what Heidegger means with ‘the final God’. The author understands these words as a metaphor for the ultimate moment in which a decision about Being and the coming of God takes place. What new insights remain to be gleaned from Marshall's work now that his magnum opus, The Principles of Economics, has reached its one hundredth anniversary? Beauty is surely in the eye of the beholder, and to this beholder a reexamination of Marshall's work with special reference to the power of his analytical tools for addressing the problem of poverty seems an appropriate hundredth anniversary undertaking. The postindustrial economies of the United States and England are showing themselves to be no less subject to the problem that attracted Marshall to study economics than was the early industrial economy of one hundred or more years ago. From an analytical perspective, the poverty problem is inseparable from the larger question of explaining the distribution of income. More specifically, it is an aspect of the question of explaining the adverse circumstances of those whom Mrashall identified as "the working class," i.e. persons who did not own property and who earned their income as wages. Since this remains the context of the poverty problem to this day, Marshall's insights into the analytical and practical difficulties of addressing it have ongoing relevance for contemporary economists. These Marshallian insights are the product of an intellectual lifetime that spans even more years than those which he devoted to writing the Principles. There is, of course, no dispute that the problem of poverty ranked high among his concerns from the beginning to the end of his long professional life.
