1. Anaerobic biodegradation of three nitrophenols in river sediment

The potential of anaerobic degradation of three nitrophenols (NPs) including 2‐NP (2‐nitrophenol), 4‐NP (4‐nitrophenol), and 2,4‐DNP (2,4‐dinitrophenol) by river sediment was investigated. Observed degradation rates occurred in the order of 2,4‐DNP > 2‐NP > 4‐NP. Optimal temperature and pH values for NP degradation were 40°C and 8.0 to 9.0, respectively. We also found that 2‐NP degradation was delayed by the addition of 4‐NP and 2,4‐NP, but enhanced by the addition of pyruvate, acetate, or lactate. Following treatment with bromoethanesulfonic acid (BESA) and vancomycin, we found that eubacteria was the major microbial population involved in the degradation of NPs.
