A simple and rapid efficient method was developed for the determination of phthalate esters using dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction followed by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection. A mixture of isopropanol (0.75 mL, dispersant) and carbon tetrachloride (30 µL, extractant) with sodium chloride (1%, w/v) was used for extraction. Under optimum conditions, the method provided linear calibration curves between 0.5 and 200 µg L−1 for dibutyl phthalate, and 1.0 and 200 µg L−1 for butyl benzyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, and diisooctyl phthalate. The relative standard deviations for intra-day and inter-day analyses were less than 5.8% and 6.9%, respectively, with enrichment factors between 229 and 424. Two wine samples were analyzed with recoveries between 70.1% and 119.3%.

SummaryAutumn olive (Elaeagnus umbellata Thunb.) fruit are a rich source of many health-related nutrients. Sweetness is one of the key indicators of quality in this edible fruit. A full-length cDNA for UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase, an enzyme involved in sugar metabolism, designated EutUGP, was cloned from autumn olive fruit. The open reading frame of EutUGP was 1,431 bp in length, and was interrupted by 18 introns. It encoded a putative polypeptide of 476 amino acids which shared high homology (85 – 87%) with other plant UGPs. The EutUGP gene was highly expressed in fruit and in young stems, but had low levels of expression in roots and leaves. Transcription of EutUGP was up-regulated and reached its maximum in Stage C (dark-yellow) fruit, then decreased slightly in Stage D (full-ripe) fruit. Membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology has been extensively employed for various industrial wastewater treatments due to its distinct advantages over conventional technologies. To provide present state and development trends of MBR technology used for industrial wastewater treatments, the authors reviewed and analyzed more than 300 scientific publications. They present an overview of the most recent development of MBR technology for treatment of industrial wastewaters (e.g., food processing, pulp and paper, textile, tannery, landfill leachate, pharmaceutical, oily and petrochemical wastewaters). Moreover, they discuss the operational characteristics, fouling characteristics, fouling control strategies, and costs of MBRs in industrial wastewater treatments. Based on the present information on MBR technology, the authors discuss further research aspects of MBRs in industrial wastewater treatments.

A quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) biosensor was developed for the detection of endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide, LPS). Polymyxin B (PMB), which binds to endotoxins of gram-negative bacteria, was immobilized on the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) modified 10 MHz AT-cut quartz crystal resonator. The SAM's were activated with 1-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]-3-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) prior to PMB immobilization. The resulting frequency change due to the adsorption of endotoxin was measured. The linear correlation could be obtained from 2.5 to 20 pg/mL.

A very sensitive and selective method for the determination of trace amounts of iron(II) and iron(III) by SPS has been developed. It is based on the fixation of iron(II) as 1-(5-bromo-2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol-6-sulphonic acid (5-Br-PAN-S) complex on a styrene-divinylbenzene anion-exchange resins. The absorbances of resin sorbed iron(II) complex is measured directly at 765 and 850 nm. Iron(III) was determined by difference measurements after reduction of iron(III) to iron(II) with hydroxylamine. The linear range of the determination is 0–25 μg for iron(II) or total iron. The detection limit for a sample volume of 100 ml using 0.5 g of anion-exchange, corresponds to 2.1 μgl−1. The method has been successfully applied to the determination of iron(II) and iron(III) in drinking water and natural waters.
