A ladder-type π-conjugated molecule containing both thiaborin and carbazole units exhibited strong light absorption and emission like other ladder-type π-conjugated molecules based on heteraborins.

1-Alkyl- and 1-aryl-5-carbaphosphatranes were prepared by the reaction of 1-hydro-5-carbaphosphatrane with nucleophiles and subsequent intramolecular oxidative cyclization. X-ray crystallographic investigation of the t-butyl derivative revealed that it has a perfectly “anti-apicophilic” arrangement. The apical 1 J PC coupling constants of the 5-carbaphosphatranes were extraordinarily large.

Dibenzo-1,4-phosphaborins were synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The phosphaborins exhibited UV/vis absorption derived from intramolecular charge transfer from the phosphorus atom to the boron atom. The phosphaborins showed different fluorescent properties depending on the substituents on the phosphorus atom. The phosphaborin was easily derivatized to P-sulfide, P-selenide and phosphonium salt. The phosphaborin and its P-derivatives formed complexes with fluoride ion. The complex formation constants were shown to increase in accordance with the decrease in their LUMO energy levels.

1-Hydro-5-carbaphosphatrane 4, the first 5-carbon analog of a phosphatrane, was synthesized. X-ray crystallographic analysis showed that it has a typical TBP structure and that it is a 10-P-5 phosphorane in a perfectly “anti-apicophilic” arrangement.

Oxidation, sulfurization, and selenation of a 1-hydro-5-carbaphosphatrane afforded the corresponding cyclic phosphonate, cyclic phosphonothioate, and cyclic phosphonoselenoate, respectively. These results indicate the existence of the tautomerization between the five-coordinate 5-carbaphosphatrane and the three-coordinate cyclic phosphonite.

LDL-apheresis is introduced in many cases all over Japan. Among them, evaluation of long-term effect on ischemic heart disease (IHD) has made on 10 cases with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) and 49 cases with heterozygous FH.As to homozygous FH, 3 patients had angina pectoris. Mean duration of treatment was 26 months (52 treatments). The changes in total cholesterol (TC) in each treatment was from 426 mg/dl to 151 mg/dl. Improvement in IHD was observed in 5 out of 10 cases.As to heterozygous FH, 17 cases had history of myocardial infarction and 12 had angina pectoris. Mean duration of treatment was 13 months (19 treatments). Mean TC was decreased from 271 mg/dl to 126 mg/dl by each treatment. Regression in Achilles tendon thickenting or skin and palpebral xanthomas was observed. Frequency of anginal attacks decreased in 8 out of 17 cases.
