Ultrasonic aspirators are commonly used to resect brain tumours because they allow safe, rapid and accurate removal of diseased tissue. Since ultrasonic aspirators generate a spray of aerosolized irrigating fluid around the instrument tip, we questioned whether this spray might contain viable tumours cells that could contribute to intraoperative spread of tumour fragments. To test this hypothesis, we collected the spray produced during the resection of nine brain tumours with an ultrasonic aspirator and semi-quantitatively analysed it for tumour presence. The aerosolized irrigation fluid was found to contain intact tumour cells or clumps of tumour cells in all nine instances, and there was a trend of increasing tumour cell dispersion with increasing ultrasonic aspiration times. Further examination is required to determine if this intraoperative dispersion of apparently viable tumour fragments contributes to local neoplasm recurrence.

We consider a deterministic situation in which identical batches of n jobs are to be scheduled on an m -machine flow line in each of k successive arrival perods of duration T . We derive the transient and steady-state properties of this periodic a flow line under the assumption that a common (but arbitrary) job sequence is employed for each batch of jobs. In particular, we derive the condition for steadystate; show that under this condition steady-state is achieved in a finite number of arrival periods; and demonstrate the relationships between job sequencing and steady-state throughput and work in process. We further derive the conditions under which finite delays on any machine lead to a permanent degradation of regular performance measures.

A construct consisting of eight dispositional sexual motives was proposed to expand upon and integrate earlier theory and research. The eight motives are desire for (a) feeling valued by one's partner, (b) showing value for one's partner, (c) obtaining relief from stress, (d) providing nurturance to one's partner, (e) enhancing feelings of personal power, (f) experiencing the power of one's partner, (g) experiencing pleasure, and (h) procreating. Based on this formulation, a self‐report questionnaire was developed to measure stable interest in the eight incentives hypothesized to influence sexual motivation and behavior. Initial factor analyses supported the proposed model in that items clustered predominantly into the theoretically proposed dimensions. Integrated manufacturing operations typically are organized along hierarchical lines. Characterized by product aggregation and time horizon, hierarchical decompositions aim at easing problems associated with the complexity and scale of the manufacturing function taken as a whole. Static models have been developed and employed which facilitate the analysis and functioning of these organizations. Existing models are valuable aids in assisting goal-planning functions, but provide little guidance for directing the pursuit of goals. This paper presents a new hierarchical model of integrated manufacturing operations based on concepts of management control. The model is congruent with commonly used static planning models, while at the same lime depicting real-time, goal-achievement efforts within a dynamic operating environment. SUMMARY The deterministic job-shop scheduling problem exhibits the fundamental computational difficulty implicit in determining an optimal timetable for sharing production resources among competing production activities. While adaptation of the formal model to industrial practice is fraught with difficulties, we show that the underlying binary-disjunctive formulation itself is more robust than might be immediately apparent. Straightforward extensions of the underlying model are sufficient to capture such practical problem features as assembly and disassembly sequences, due-dates and out-processing operations, scheduled maintenance, nonzero release times and dispatch operations, certain sequence-dependent set-ups and materials handling delays, and a great range of operational side-constraints.
