The general industrial regulator problem has been formulated in mathematical terms. The regulator theory developed draws upon the dual property of controllability and observability of the system and uses pole assignment technique as mathematical tool for designing the regulator. The disturbance rejection property is in-built into the regulator. A combination of state feedback and integral control along with feed-forward from changing reference and/or disturbance signals achieve regulation and/or tracking. The total control law so obtained can be implemented by means of a microprocessor based programmable controller.
