There is growing science and policy interest in multi-sectoral action, but bridging the gap between family planning and urban development is challenging. This paper analyses the experience of integrating these sectors in sub-Saharan Africa via building research capacity. Family-planning researchers were supported to link with urban-development actors, one goal being to generate lessons on the process of getting their research into the policy domain. The urban governance sector’s dynamic and complex nature was a particular challenge for family-planning researchers; in future, structured familiarisation with a sector might facilitate multi-sectoral action and better enable researchers to link with the policy world.

While the canon of so-bad-it’s-good cinema has predominantly centred upon American films, it is notable that a significant number of recent entries–including Miami Connection, Troll 2, Samurai Cop, The Room and Birdemic: Shock and Terror–were directed by non-American filmmakers working in America. Building on Hamid Naficy’s use of the concept ‘accented cinema’ to describe exilic and diasporic filmmakers working in the West, this article explores the cultural politics of accented cult cinema and investigates to what extent the celebration of these low-budget exploitation films as so-bad-it’s-good relies upon a (largely disguised) perception of foreignness.

This article examines what the process of founding and chairing the SCMS (Society for Cinema and Media Studies) ‘Transnational Cinemas’ scholarly interest group revealed to the authors about the evolution of the field. Charting a progression in the group’s activities from workshops around disciplinary definition to more practical sessions addressing teaching and research methodologies, the article maps out key shifts that took place within the period 2013–2017. It also appraises the authors’ efforts to create lasting, tangible resources for future researchers and teachers. The limitations of such a group’s influence are balanced against its\ud capacity to bring scholars from diverse disciplines into dialogue with each other, thereby offering insight into the breadth and depth of the ‘transnational cinemas’ field.

For unrecognised states in the international system recognition of sovereign statehood is the ultimate goal. Not being ‘a state’ means being excluded from global networks. However, even in the most basic definitions and criteria for unrecognised states there is a period of relative autonomy accorded due to non-recognition. This is a period when political actors can use isolation to establish the state’s narrative, identity and structure. It is this period that provides the foundations for external interaction. It is in this period that the state is born. This article examines another side to the politics of recognition: the politics of non-recognition. Drawing on the contemporary examples of Somaliland and Kurdistan, the article assesses the benefits as well as the costs of non-recognition.

The rise of game development and game studies on university campuses prompts academic libraries to consider how to support teaching and research in this area. This article examines current issues and challenges in the development of game collections at academic libraries. The gaming ecosystem has become more complex and libraries may need to move beyond collections largely based on console video games. This article will advance the discussion by considering emerging issues to support access to the full range of games. The article will use examples from Carleton University Library, Ottawa, which has been developing a game collection since 2008.

For police officers, much of the working day consists of telling stories about everyday policing and events. Although the study of narrative and storytelling in organizational contexts is an expanding area of research, the same cannot be said of the study of narrative and storytelling in a police context, which remains an under-researched, although not unexplored, subject of study. Using the work of management-narrative theorists such as David Boje and Yiannis Gabriel as a starting point, this article considers policing organizations and agencies as storytelling organizations. This is achieved through a literature review of the ‘storied’ nature of policing and the police use of storytelling in an organizational context. Thus, this reflective article contributes to the developing literature in the field by reviewing and mapping the literature, highlighting potential areas for future research.

Microbial activities are responsible for reducing the harmful effects of pollutants in different burial environments. Within wetlands in particular, microorganisms play an important role in the transformation of heavy metals and metalloids via direct or indirect oxidation/reduction. In turn, these microbial transformations can lead to the detoxification of pollutant elements such as copper, chromium and arsenic that comprise CCA-treated wood. CCA was the most commonly used wood preservative in the UK (up until its partial ban in 2004). CCA prolongs the service life of wood by making it resistant to microbiological attack. As such, it has been regularly used in the construction of platforms and boardwalks in wetlands. Targeted studies of waterlogged burial environments allow researchers to gain holistic insights into the physico-chemical and biological condition of wetlands that have the potential to contain organic remains of both anthropogenic and biogenic origin. Recent research has shown that microbial community diversity and functioning are intimately linked to physical and chemical parameters, such that environmental perturbations may have the potential to enhance the effectiveness of microbial communities in the degradation process. Our studies have shown that, as a consequence of the 2007 floods which impacted upon many British lowland rivers, a rapid microbial response to environmental perturbations can be demonstrated within the wetland deposits being monitored. As such, a quantification of the latent functionality of micro-organisms in a soil profile may be of fundamental importance for our understanding of potential in situ degradation processes; and, as a consequence, the likelihood for the biodegradation ...

This article addresses the interconnectedness between gay identity and spiritual development as well as explores the unique challenges that lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals face when trying to incorporate a sense of spirituality into their sexual identity. This article addresses what counselors and other mental health practitioners can do to help facilitate spiritual exploration with their sexual minority clients and reexamine the notion of “faith development” and what it means for lesbian, gay, and bisexual clients to find the spirit within. The article also presents traditional and nontraditional methods to find spiritual fulfillment by introducing a four-part counseling framework and how this can contribute to overall mental health.

The storytelling in textual and visual re‐constructions of Bill Gates and Richard Branson by their organizations produces entrepreneurial identities bound into particular social power–knowledge relations. Our purpose is to examine how these organizations, and their critics, mobilize storytelling in acts of re‐storying (enlivening) or re‐narrating (branding a monologic) practices using Internet technologies to invite viewers to frame the world of entrepreneurship. We use visual discourse and storytelling methods to analyze how Microsoft and Virgin Group use various kinds of entrepreneurial images and textual narratives to re‐narrate and produce particular brands of capitalism. These organizations’ scoptic regimes of representation are contested in counter‐visualizing and counterstory practices of external stakeholders. By 2008, ownership transfers of former council housing had been proceeding for 20 years. Since 1997, the process has encompassed many larger urban local authorities, with housing departments which could have been fairly characterised as monolithic, producer-oriented bureaucracies. Drawing on new research evidence from England, Scotland and Wales, this paper considers the extent to which these ‘second generation’ transfers have delivered against policy objectives to reform the governance and organisational culture of social housing. The empirical evidence suggests that second generation transfers have provided a substantial stimulus to tenant involvement and to the development of more consumer-focused, inclusive and commercially minded organisations. However, ministerial aspirations for transfer as a vehicle for community empowerment have not always been realised. And, to the extent that they have triggered beneficial change in governance and organisational culture, questions remain about the durability of such gains.

There has been an upsurge in academic studies relating to the underclass as a marginalized group. Notwithstanding this, the literature seldom represents the underclass as an economically active grouping. Thisstudy counters this stance by considering street prostitutes and pimps as economically active members of anentrepreneurial underclass. The contemporary Black faith community today is facing issues and challenges that are forcing it to consider crucial questions that relate to the legacy, future and place of the Black church and Black theology in contemporary culture. If the Black faith community is to address these issues and challenges compellingly, it is crucial that it locate suitable resources to aid in this task. In this article, I will argue that Black phronesis, or Black practical wisdom, is such a resource. Black phronesis, the means to create and maintain relevant and constructive modes of praxis for the Black faith community can be discovered. Such modes of informed praxis are compelling responses to the contemporary cultural challenges and demands which face the Black faith community today.

Identification of novel antifungals is needed, and plant-derived compounds offer important leads in this respect. This article initiates a compendium of secondary assays for testing hypotheses on mode of action of plant-derived compounds. Three assays were developed to evaluate compounds that are hypothesized to effect cell wall function, transcription, and oxidative stress. A hypothesized perturbation on cell wall integrity by chimaphilin and Echinacea. root extracts was supported using sonication and heat shock assays. Heat shock treatments reduced the number of viable cells recovered when yeast was grown in the presence of subinhibitory concentrations of chimaphilin. A reduction in cell numbers was also observed with both sonication-based and heat shock–based assays when yeast was grown in the presence of Echinacea purpurea. (L.) Moench (Asteraceae) extracts. This paper explores the morality associated with entrepreneurship. It has been argued that there is no moral space in entrepreneurship, but such instrumental views may miss out much of the nature of enterprise and how it is understood. Consequently we propose that a socially-constructed perspective, based upon the meanings of entrepreneurship, may help to understand the morality of entrepreneurship. By applying such a lens, we find that the narratives and discourses of the meanings of entrepreneurship are ideological and clearly present a moral space. This space lies between the individual and society and is normatively articulated in entrepreneurial discourses. We develop a tentative framework which links values and outcomes that shows how ‘authenticated’ entrepreneurship, that is to say that which resonates with a socially approved moral dimension, is legitimized by comparisons with the socially constructed view. Accounting standards state that the purpose of presenting earnings per share (EPS) is to provide financial statement users with information on the performance of a single entity. Yet, several textbook authors go further to state that EPS can be used to make comparisons among firms. In this article, the authors show that although EPS comparisons among large publicly traded companies may be appropriate, such comparisons should not be made among small publicly traded firms because the number of common shares outstanding represents a poor scaling measure for entity size. As such, accounting professors should refrain from teaching EPS as a tool for making intercompany performance comparisons or at the very least should warn students of the pitfalls of making such comparisons.

This paper sets out the argument that housing renewal has a major role to play in economic and social regeneration in areas of council owned housing. It considers the role that housing stock transfer, with the shift of ownership from local authorities to Registered Social Landlords (RSLs), might have, not only in generating the investment needed to improve the quality of housing and environments, but also in terms of creating wider regeneration benefits. Using the Welsh policy context, it examines how the first large-scale housing transfer is being used to secure broader regeneration objectives.

This paper considers access to social housing in England, Scotland and Wales. After putting Britain's social housing in context, it sets out the current legislative and policy context for access to social housing in the three countries, detailing key differences in approach and emphasis. It goes on to consider the establishment of choice-based lettings systems and the extent to which the various government departments are taking the lead in promoting their development. The paper concludes that the emphasis on choice, in particular on advertising-based methods of letting properties differs greatly across the UK, with a continuum, England, Wales, Scotland.

The development and verification of a sensor-based underwater navigation system are described. We form a basic vehicle model, which relies on few parameters. This model is fused with inclinometer, compass, triaxial gyroscope and sonar data to produce an estimate of the vehicle's orientation and position. A dedicated sonar unit has been developed, to track and produce continuous range information from a passive target. The unit uses the range differential between multiple sonar transducers to obtain target bearing information, and a pan-and-tilt unit to keep the transducers aligned with the target. In this paper, we compare sonar model predictions with experimental data. We also present sensor noise characteristics. We show the results of combining the localization system with a simple controller. The vehicle performs a 'stand-off' experiment and moves in a predetermined path relative to a sonar feature. Finally, we discuss the problem of missing sensor data, which arises when the sonar is changing between targets.

When selecting among competing applicants for rehousing in social rented property, the perceived wisdom in Britain since the 1940s has been to award priority to households in the greatest housing need. “Need” is often defined in highly complex ways. However, a shift has occurred in local authority and housing association rehousing policies away from allocations made solely on the basis of need. This shift comes in response to the changing context in which social rented housing has operated in the past 15 years and to perceived weaknesses in needs‐based systems. Present policies are designed to address wider objectives, including developing stable communities and minimizing housing management problems. This article examines these policy changes and the extent to which local housing allocations are used to address not only individual household needs, but also the concerns of local communities and wider housing management issues.

The following results were obtained in a long-term follow-up investigation including 37 patients who suffered from idiopathic membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis. The mean follow-up period was 51 months (median 32 months). 1) Renal survival was 35% at 5 years and 16% at 10 years. 2) Univariate analysis indicated significant (por = 0.10) association between poor prognosis and the two following parameters a) high age b) elevated blood pressure. 3) Using a Cox-analysis including a) gender b) age at kidney biopsy c) square of age (age age) at biopsy d) presence of nephrotic syndrome e) presence of elevated blood pressure, the following p-values were found: 0.56; 0.02; 0.04; 0.50; 0.09. Thus at the 10% level age, the square of age and elevated blood pressure were significant and independently associated with poor prognosis.

As a result of allied subsidy and the influence of sunk costs, the marginal cost of the Gulf War to the US was reduced to negligible size. This result is at variance with the Olson‐Zeckhauser thesis that in an alliance “the small exploit the large.” A game theoretic alternative explanation suggests that the relation between allies resembles the game of Chicken, successfully played by the US. The ability to shift the marginal costs of war in the short term raises questions about the possible underestimation of long term effects.

During a 12-year period 419 patients were admitted because of acute renal failure requiring dialysis. Fifty (12%) had septicemia verified by blood culture. In a retrospective study age, sex, focus of infection, blood culture results, kidney function, mode of dialysis treatment, numbers and durations of complicating organ failures, presence of gastrointestinal bleeding, and secondary complicating events of septicemia were recorded for the purpose of establishing a prognostic index based on clinical criteria. Respiratory failure was present in 34 patients, circulatory failure in 31 patients, failure of coagulation system in 25 patients, and hepatic failure in 10 patients. Overall mortality was 46%. Highest death-rates were found during the first days of dialysis. In patients with multiple organ failures, in elderly and in patients suffering from staphylococcus aureus septicemia, a non-significant trend towards higher mortality was found. The mode of dialysis treatment did not influence patient survival. Our intention of establishing a prognostic index based on bedside clinical criteria has not been fulfilled. Even though mortality-rate increases in patients with acute renal failure complicated by failure of one or more vital organs, survival-rate in patients with four or more organ failures was 30%.

After an episode of enteritis caused by C. jejuni a 15-year-old boy developed Schönlein-Henoch purpura. Because of continuous proteinuria a renal biopsy was performed. Light microscopy revealed focal proliferative glomerulonephritis. IgA was the dominant immunoglobulin. A causal relationship between enteritis caused by C. jejuni and Schönlein-Henoch purpura complicated with focal proliferative glomerulonephritis is suggested.

Hemodialysis may protect against disease activity in Wegener's granulomatosis. We report here a 41-year-old woman with Wegener's granulomatosis, in whom renal transplantation was performed after a 10-month period of hemodialysis during which no signs of disease activity were detected. Recurrence of disease did, however, take place 2 years after renal allograft transplantation despite immunosuppressive therapy with cyclosporine A and prednisone. Reinstitution of hemodialysis and graftectomy did not improve the patient's condition but plasmapheresis and treatment with cyclophosphamide and prednisone eliminated all signs of disease within a fortnight. A proposal for better maintenance of these patients is made.
