The current business landscape has created the impetus to develop management graduates with capabilities that foster responsible leadership and sustainability. Through the lens of Gitsham's 3C Model (Complexity, Context and Connection) of graduate capabilities, this paper discusses the experience of implementing the United Nations Principles for Responsible Management Education (UNPRME) at the Graduate School of Management, La Trobe University Australia. The case highlights that universities should use both a top-down and bottom-up approach, engaging students in the implementation process. The analysis also shows that educational institutions face similar challenges to business organizations in terms of resource limitations, inertia and resistance to change. Corporate reporting is a key tool in managing stakeholder relationships. It is useful for developing corporate legitimacy especially as large listed companies are increasingly asked to report on different dimensions of their performance (economic, social and environmental). Our paper thus investigates corporate reporting regarding employees in large listed Australian companies by questioning how they take into account their national and industrial contexts to develop legitimacy. We analyse corporate reporting of employees in 60 Australian companies listed on the Australian Stock Exchange top 100 companies in 2009. First we found that companies report to develop their pragmatic legitimacy by providing information on the benefits valued by employees such as health and safety or career development. They also attempt to improve their moral legitimacy by communicating on anti-discrimination policies or business ethics. This paper reports the findings of case study research exploring the strength of the HR system in three Australian public hospitals from the perspective of senior, middle and line managers, and HR practitioners. The study explored how HRM is understood, interpreted, and operationalized across the management hierarchy. The findings suggest that the role of the CEO is crucial in providing HR legitimacy, leadership and resources that create a distinctive HR system, and in nurturing within group agreement and consensus among the senior executive team on the role of HR. In turn, senior managers need to translate consistent HR messages throughout the management hierarchy and provide lower level managers with the formal and informal direction, support and empowerment to operationalize HR strategy.

Source water protection is receiving considerable attention due to contamination concerns related to drinking water. While this important issue has intensified over the past decade, several municipalities in Canada and the United Stated have considerable experience with practicing groundwater protection. This research investigates wellhead protection programs in the Region of Waterloo (Ontario) and the City of Dayton (Ohio). The context and process of developing these exemplary municipal groundwater protection programs are described. Cross-case analysis compares the cases in terms of the development process, employment of regulatory and non-regulatory tools, points of innovation, and challenges confronted. Experiences from these cases confirms the need for an appropriate mix of tools for groundwater protection, the importance of organizational capacity and the need for supportive and flexible institutional arrangements. Suggestions are offered for municipalities undertaking groundwater protection programs.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a specialized addiction support group model might enhance treatment adherence among diabetic women. Charlotte Kasl's Sixteen Step Empowerment Model was chosen for the study. The 17 volunteers in the study were primarily Caucasian women living in a university town located in a frontier Rocky Mountain state. Their ages ranged from 19 to 81 years. Both Type I and Type II diabetic women were included in the study. The Diabetic Self-Efficacy Scale (DSES) was the instrument used in the study. The results of this study indicate that ten weekly sessions of attendance in an addictions-specific support group focused on diabetes mellitus yielded a significant increase in DSES scores (t = 1.85, p = .05, alpha = .1). Eighty-eight percent of the intervention group participants reported that they had improved their treatment adherence behaviors.

In the context of an increasingly de-regulated industrial relations' environment, enterprise bargaining has been viewed by unions as an opportunity for organising and increasing membership at the grass roots level. This paper uses a case study approach detailing the process at one university where the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) utilised organising tactics of the type currently promoted by the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU). The campaign is described and assessed relative to outcomes at other NTEU sites during the same round of bargaining. It is concluded, that, firstly, the tactics used at this site succeeded in producing greater membership growth and mobilisation than at comparable sites. Secondly, the tactics used are applicable to a university workforce including academic and general staff. Thirdly, industrial campaigning in enterprise bargaining does not by itself result in membership growth.

In recent years the use of outsourcing in Australia has increased in both the public and private sectors. This article examines the reasons, effects and implications associated with the outsourcing decision. The literature explores the reasons for outsourcing that range from those based on costs to those based on competitive advantage, labour market flexibility and self-interest of decision makers. The relevant literature also highlights the controversy surrounding the effects of outsourcing. The discussion also examines outsourcing's effect on industrial relations and human resource areas, such as labour market flexibility, morale, turnover, absenteeism and safety, as well as the measurement of contract performance, management control and accountability issues.
