Abstract

International audience; Bilebullephlebia legendrei n. gen., n. sp. is described, illustrated, and placed into the small epiproctophoran family Burmaphlebiidae. This family was previously known from the mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber by two monotypic genera, but the new fossil shows that its diversity is underestimated. At least one additional genus with an enigmatic wing venation remains to be described from the same deposit. Nothing is known about the genitalia configuration of the Burmaphlebiidae but new fossils are expected to clarify the position of the family which is currently only discussed in light of wing venation characters.

Abstract

International audience; 12 The Early Cretaceous topographic evolution of Transbaikalia was largely governed by the 13 tectonic evolution of the Mongol-Okhotsk orogenic belt. The collapse of the Mongol-Okhotsk 14 orogen triggered the formation of metamorphic core complexes and associated extensional basins, 15 widespread throughout Transbaikalia, North Mongolia, and North China. Numerous lithofacies proximal sediment sources. Distal provinces also made a contribution to sedimentation indicating 29 the rise of a positive topography characterizing the exhumation of the metamorphic core 30 complexes. Overlying fine-grained formations indicate a significant smoothing of the topography, 31 suggesting that from middle Aptian, Western Transbaikalia developed in a relatively calm tectonic 32 regime. We also show that the basins of Transbaikalia were formed both in conjunction with the 33 exhumation of metamorphic cores complexes and reactivated structural sutures. Revised data on 34 dinosaur fauna and palynology, together with the dating of host deposits, provide insights on the 35 Early Cretaceous paleoenvironmental evolution.

Abstract

International audience; A new genus and species of Odonatoptera is described and figured from the Amisan Formation as Koreaphlebia iussradiae gen. et sp. nov. This new genus and species is placed in the Zygophlebiidae and differs from all other zygophlebid, inter alia, owing to the forewing with a distinct bridge IR2-RP2-IR1 perfectly straight, crossvein between MP and Cu+AA below apex of MAb vertical and rather long, base of CuP separating from that of CuA opposite point of junction between MAa and MP, at the crossing point of ‘pillar’ and Cu+AA, and RP3/4 with at most short distal branches covering a small area. This new specimen is the first Zygophlebiidae from the Amisan Formation. The temporal range of the Triadophlebiomorpha is used to discuss the dating of the Amisan Formation.

International audience; A new species of Hypaeus Simon 1900 is described from French Guiana based on both sexes, Hypaeus olympeae sp. nov. We employed morphological evidence, field observation, as well as the mitochondrial COI rapidly evolving loci to confirm that both males and females belong to the same species. Finally, nine species are newly recorded for the salticid fauna of French Guiana, Cyllodania fasciata (Caporicaco, 1954) syn. nov. is considered junior synonym of Gypogyna forceps Simon, 1900 and 12 COI sequences corresponding to four previously unsequenced Hypaeus species are added to GenBank.

Abstract

International audience; In southern and south-eastern Arabia, the Neolithic developed between 6500 and 3100 BCE. In the Sultanate of Oman, occupation occurred along wadi banks, around paleolakes, and at large shell-middens accumulated on the shores of the Arabian Sea. Nevertheless, the origins and development of human occupation on the Arabian Sea islands are poorly known, if not totally undocumented. After exploring the archaeological potential of the large island of Masirah, we focused our research on the small Al-Hallaniyat archipelago (formerly known as the Kuria Muria islands). A preliminary archaeological survey led us to test several sites belonging to different occupational phases on the island, and we explored the largest shell-midden at the HLY-4 site in 2014 and 2019. Radiocarbon dating results, along with lithic analysis, demonstrate that at around 4200-4000 BCE, a Neolithic community settled the largest island (Al-Hallaniyah). While goats and dogs had been introduced as livestock, fish and dolphins were regularly fished and captured as a main food resource together with marine turtles and nesting birds. At HLY-4, not only lithic and bone artifacts characterize the assemblage, as standardized discoid marine-shell beads were also manufactured. The Neolithic conquest of Masirah Island occurred early in the Neolithic (at the beginning of the sixth millennium BCE), while the settlements on the Farasan islands (in the Red Sea) are dated to around 4500 BCE, and thus the ones on the Al-Hallaniyat archipelago to the end of the fifth millennium BCE. In Arabia, their chronological assessment marks the final conquest of the insular areas.

Abstract

International audience; ObjectiveThis study aimed to assess the effect of normal aging on the processing of taxonomic and thematic semantic relations.MethodWe used the Visual-World-Paradigm coupled with eye-movement recording. We compared performance of healthy younger and older adults on a word-to-picture matching task in which participants had to identify each target among semantically related (taxonomic or thematic) and unrelated distractors.ResultsYounger and older participants exhibited similar patterns of gaze fixations in the two semantic conditions. The effect of aging took the form of an overall reduction in sensitivity to semantic competitors, with no difference between the taxonomic and thematic conditions. Moreover, comparison of the proportions of fixations between the younger and older participants indicated that targets were identified equally quickly in both age groups. This was not the case when mouse-click reaction times were analyzed.ConclusionsFindings argue in favor of nonspecific effects of normal aging on semantic processing that similarly affect taxonomic and thematic processing. There are important clinical implications, as pathological aging has been repeatedly shown to selectively affect either taxonomic or thematic relations. Measuring eye-movements in a semantic task is also an interesting approach in the elderly, as these seem to be less impacted by aging than other motor responses.

7. A new Caloneurodea family (Insecta, Archaeorthoptera) increases the insect palaeodiversity of the middle Permian Salagou Formation (southern France)

Abstract

International audience; A new genus and species of the archaeorthopteran order Caloneurodea are described and illustrated from the Salagou Formation (France) as Lodevogramma pumilia gen. et sp. nov. The particular wing venation of this species precludes its placement within one of the already described families of Caloneurodea. Consequently, the family Lodevogrammatidae fam. nov. is created to accommodate this specimen. A detailed comparison of the new species with other Caloneurodea is provided. This new species differs from all other Caloneurodea because it has: petiolate wings; the area between C and R/RA is very narrow; vein RA ends near the wing apex; vein RP has two branches; the fork of CuP basad the base of M; and two very short anal veins are present. This new species increases the diversity of Caloneurodea in the Salagou Formation and provides additional information on the diversity of the order around the late Capitanian extinction. We compared the diversity of Caloneurodea with that of Megasecoptera, another order with a similar history between the Carboniferous and the Permian, and hypothesized that the decrease in the size of both groups could be an indicator of their declines, possibly related to floral changes, following a pattern similar to that of Permian tetrapods. The decline of Caloneurodea could also be related to the diversification of the Orthoptera during the middle–late Permian.

Abstract

International audience; OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine how different resistance training protocols affect gremlin 1, macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), cardiometabolic, and anthropometric measures in obese men. METHODS: Forty-four males with obesity (weight: 93.2 ± 2.2 kg, BMI: 32.9 ± 1.2 kg/m(2), age: 27.5 ± 9.4 years) were randomly assigned to traditional resistance training (TRT, n = 11), circuit resistance training (CRT, n = 11), interval resistance training (IRT, n = 11) or control (C, n = 11) groups. TRT group performed ten exercises at 50% of 1RM with 14 repetitions for three sets and 30 seconds rest interval between exercises and 1.5 min rest between sets, the CRT protocol included three circuits of 10 exercises, at an intensity of 50% of 1-RM, 14 repetitions with a minimum rest (< 15 s) between exercises and 3 min rest between sets, and the IRT group performed two sets of the same exercises with 50% of 1 RM, and 14 repetitions were followed with active rest of 25% of 1RM and 14 repetitions. All resistance training groups performed 60 min per session resistance exercises, 3 days per week, for 12 weeks. Measurements were taken at baseline and after 12 weeks of exercise training. Abstract

International audience; This study aimed to determine the key performance indicators of inshore sailing during the sailing Tour de France. Technical and physical parameters were investigated to determine the discriminating factors between successful and less successful international level sailors. Measurements from 21 sailors (mean ± SD; age = 23.81 ± 4.18 years) were conducted prior to the sailing Tour de France. Global Positioning System data of all participating teams (n = 23) was analysed. Sailors were divided into two groups (i.e. successful and less successful) according to qualifying performance percentage. The differences between successful and less successful sailors were explored by means of independent t-tests. Results indicate that successful boats displayed higher maximal speed, higher average speed and more efficient starting performance per race than less successful boats. Successful sailors have stronger handgrip strength, higher isometric maximal voluntary force relative to bodyweight (isometric mid-thigh pull) and more powerful submaximal pulling (bench pull) actions than their less successful counterparts. The results of this study suggest that multiple sailing, physical and physiological variables are related to sailing performance in inshore sailing. Therefore, we emphasize the importance of integrating specific testing protocols to evaluate the performance potential of inshore sailors participating in the sailing Tour de France.

Abstract

International audience; The biomechanical influence of brace treatment for scoliosis is not understood. This prospective pilot study analyzed reliability of a system based on 100% textile sensors for measurement of pressure exerted by brace on trunk. Evaluation of modifications during changes in the location of the support zones and variations in amplitude of the pressure was observed in four patients, when considering three main daily positions mimicking day and nighttime wear. A calibration step allowed the determination of a conversion law between sensor data and pressure unit using a second order polynomial function with a high r(2)of 0.99. This prototype is the first of a new generation. Experimental pressure distribution could be useful for the further brace development.

Abstract

Exposure of the general population to pesticides, especially in agricultural areas, is a major public health concern. This review analyses the role of Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) in Residential Exposure to Agricultural Pesticides (REAP) and how it is measured and modelled. Some epidemiological studies have shown that basic LULC variables, such as distance to a crop and field size, are relevant for explaining REAP. However, the potential of LULC mitigation elements, such as vegetation barriers, grassy strips and buffer zones, to mitigate REAP has been poorly studied. The availability of recent low-cost and high-quality geospatial data enables REAP models to include alternative and more precise LULC variables. This review also highlights the need for (i) generic environmental sampling protocols, (ii) exposure and spraying datasets and (iii) assessment of the mitigation capacity of LULC to improve REAP modelling significantly.

Abstract

11th International Conference on Parametric Optimization and Related; International audience; We propose a new family of relaxation schemes for mathematical programs with vanishing constraints that extend the relaxation of Hoheisel, Kanzow & Schwartz from 2012. We discuss the properties of the sequence of relaxed non-linear programs as well as stationary properties of limiting points. Our relaxation schemes have the desired property of converging to an M-stationary point. We obtain the new MPVC-wGCQ and prove that it is the weakest constraint qualification for MPVC. We also introduce a new constraint qualification, MPVC-CRSC, that is sufficient to guarantee the convergence of the new method. Under this weak condition, we also provide an error bound and an exact penalty result for the MPVC.

Abstract

International audience; This article analyses the factors that motivate local energy production and transition and opposing lock-ins, within the context of urban municipal energy managment, in France. A new conceptual framework, local and domestic geopolitics, is mobilized to shed light on the conflictuality of this process, the political resources activated by local authorities in front of national operators, the links between energy control and power at the local level, ultimately refocusing questions of energy justice. We present an in-depth case study of the border city of Metz, which inherited a municipal energy company founded during the German annexation. It revealed the reasons and the means by which, since the beginning of the twentieth century, energy became a local resource and its production was expanded, in spite of a centralized energy system. Local energy was found to be a political construction, serving to reinforce local authority. In the context of energy transition, it is becoming a new energy resource, local actors intending it to progressively take the place of centralized energies, a focal point of a new geopolitics of energy. Within this geopolitical landscape, the power and benefits conferred by the control of energy production is found to be a central dimension of energy justice. In Metz, this power and benefits has not been better shared than at the national level, whether in procedural, distributive, or recognition terms, serving the career of a mayor and the local finances, rather than democratization of energy choices.

Abstract

International audience; Annexed by Germans in 1870, the region Alsace became French again, in 1918. After a triumphal welcom for the French troops, the Alsatians, influenced by 47 years of German presence, showcase very timidly their new nationality. In a France that cultivates anti-Germanism, the political and professional scenes do not, however, allow to claim the German heritage. It is different in the field of sport, which cultivates contradictions by playing its neutral and apolitical image. The local associations of sport maintains a special relationship with the borders and with those who live over the border. At the same time, the relationships are made of porosities and exchanges with Germany and of looking at the French territory or even at the Alsatian aera. This ambiguous positioning leads them to hesitate in two ways : on the one hand, They adopt a public posture advocating their attachment to the Republic; on the other hand, they undertake an "infrapolytic" posture of fiddling with the new borders. We will illustrate this phenomenon through the monograph of a rowing club, the “Cercle Nautique de Strasbourg”.

16. The MusIC method: a fast and quasi-optimal solution to the muscle forces estimation problem

Abstract

International audience; The present paper aims at presenting a fast and quasi-optimal method of muscle forces estimation: the MusIC method. It consists in interpolating a first estimation in a database generated offline thanks to a classical optimization problem, and then correcting it to respect the motion dynamics. Three different cost functions – two polynomial criteria and a min/max criterion – were tested on a planar musculoskeletal model. The MusIC method provides a computation frequency approximately ten times higher compared to a classical optimization problem with a relative mean error of 4% on cost function evaluation.

Abstract

International audience; Geosynphytosociology deals with the study of combinations of vegetation series – or geosigmeta – within landscape. Its main advantage is to assess conservation status based on vegetation dynamics. However, this field-based approach has not been widely applied, because local surveys are not representative of spatio-temporal landscape complexity, which leads to uncertainties and errors for geosigmeta structural and functional mapping. In this context, satellite time series appear as relevant data for monitoring vegetation dynamics. This article aims to assess the contribution of an annual satellite time series for geosigmeta structural and functional mapping. The study area, which focuses on the French Atlantic coast (4630 km²), includes salt, brackish, sub-brackish and fresh marshes. A structural vegetation map was derived from the classification of an annual time series of 38 MODIS images validated with field surveys. The functional vegetation map was derived from the annual Integral of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI-I), as an indicator of above-ground net primary production. Results show that geosigmeta were successfully mapped at a scale of 1:250,000 with an overall accuracy of 82.9%. The geosigmeta functional map highlights a strong gradient from the lowest NDVI-I values in salt marshes to the highest values in fresh marshes.

Abstract

International audience; The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of rotation axes during a tennis serve. A motion capture system was used to evaluate the contribution of the potential axes of rotation (minimum inertia axis, shoulder-centre of mass axis and the shoulder-elbow axis) during the four discrete tennis serve phases (loading, cocking, acceleration and follow through). Ten ranked athletes (International Tennis Number 1-3) repeatedly performed a flat service aiming at a target on the other side of the net. The four serve phases are distinct and thus, each movement phase seems to be organised around specific rotation axes. The results showed that the limbs' rotational axis does not necessarily coincide with the minimum inertia axis across the cocking phase of the tennis serve. Even though individual serving strategies were exposed, all participants showed an effect due to the cocking phase and changed the rotation axis during the task. Taken together, the results showed that despite inter-individual differences, nine out of 10 participants changed the rotation axis towards the minimum inertia and/or the mass axis in an endeavour to maximise external rotation of the shoulder to optimally prepare for the acceleration phase.

International audience; Generalized endpoint-inflated binomial regression was recently proposed to model count data with large frequencies of both zeros and right-endpoints. Maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) was developed for this model and simulations suggest that the resulting estimates behave well. However, large-sample properties of the MLE have not yet been rigorously established. Such results are however essential for ensuring reliable statistical inference and decision-making. This paper addresses this issue. Identifiability of the generalized endpoint-inflated binomial regression model is first proved. Then, consistency and asymptotic normality of the MLE are established. A simulation study is conducted to assess finite-sample behaviour of the estimator.

Abstract

International audience; We present a 1:100,000 scale soil texture map of the Paragominas county (Pará, Brazil), covering 19,330 km². The method allows rapid production of a soil texture map of a large area where the strength of a duricrust controls the relief. It is based on an easily accessible explanatory variable, topography, which is represented by a Digital Elevation Model. The method makes it possible to map the spatial distribution of the texture of the topsoil layer. Modelling was complemented by field observations to identify the laws governing the spatial organisation of soil textures. The spatial variability of the elevation above sea level of the duricrust was obtained by Kriging. The error rate of the resulting map is 26%, and the observations of the four soil texture units were respectively 78%, 90%, 41% and 60% accurately located.

Abstract

International audience; During the twentieth century, outdoor physical education (OPE) gradually integrated with the French education system. Culturally speaking, OPE had to overcome several hurdles because it promoted values such as freedom, initiative and responsibility that were deemed incompatible with the existing educational model. Beyond being a pedagogical tool, the health and welfare implications justified the existence of OPE within the school system, thus changing the meaning of those values. The question of human relations with nature truly facilitated the incorporation of OPE into French educational programmes even if the scope of its development is rather limited today. Some might regret the predominance of a kind of physical activity that conveyed values and was proven to be especially productive in terms of issues related to education, security and respect for the environment. Nevertheless, OPE physical activities found their rightful place within the school system because of the sports facet of the activities.

Abstract

Let k be a field of characteristic 0. Let f∈k[X0,Y0] be a non-constant reduced polynomial. In this article we study the differential ideal {f}:=[f] of the differential ring k{X0,Y0}. We introduce the S-algorithm which allows, for every differential polynomial P∈k{X0,Y0}, to test if it belongs or not to the differential ideal {f}:=[f]. Another consequence of this study is to establish a precise characterization of the reducedness of the arc scheme associated with a plane curve X, defined over k, in terms of the geometry of X.

Abstract

International audience; The zero-inflated binomial (ZIB) regression model was proposed to account for excess zeros in binomial regression. Since then, the model has been applied in various fields, such as ecology and epidemiology. In these applications, maximum-likelihood estimation (MLE) is used to derive parameter estimates. However, theoretical properties of the MLE in ZIB regression have not yet been rigorously established. The current paper fills this gap and thus provides a rigorous basis for applying the model. Consistency and asymptotic normality of the MLE in ZIB regression are proved. A consistent estimator of the asymptotic variance-covariance matrix of the MLE is also provided. Finite-sample behavior of the estimator is assessed via simulations. Finally, an analysis of a data set in the field of health economics illustrates the paper.

Abstract

International audience; OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine whether non-lethal sepsis induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) modulates oxidative damage and enzymatic antioxidant defenses in diaphragm and hindlimb skeletal muscles (soleus and Extensor Digitorus Longus (EDL)). METHODS: Female Wistar rats were divided into four experimental groups: (1) control animals, (2) animals sacrificed 2 hours or (3) 7 days after CLP, and (4) sham-operated animals. At the end of the experimental procedure, EDL, soleus, and diaphragm muscles were harvested and 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE)-protein adducts and protein carbonyl contents were examined in relation to superoxide dismutase and catalase expression and activities. RESULTS: We observed that both non-respiratory oxidative (i.e. soleus) and glycolytic skeletal muscles (i.e. EDL) are more susceptible to sepsis-induced oxidative stress than diaphragm, as attested by an increase in 4-HNE protein adducts and carbonylated proteins after 2 hours of CLP only in soleus and EDL. DISCUSSION: These differences could be explained by higher basal enzymatic antioxidant activities in diaphragm compared to hindlimb skeletal muscles. Together, these results demonstrate that diaphragm is better protected from oxidative stress than hindlimb skeletal muscles during CLP-induced sepsis.

Abstract

Andreaea rothii has been recorded for the first time in Croatia. It is a boreo-temperate suboceanic species (Hill et al., 2007) relatively rare in SE Europe, since it is known only from Romania (Ellis et al., 2014d), Slovenia and Serbia (Sabovljevic´ et al., 2008 ; Hodgetts, 2015). The species was found in the Papuk Mountains, situated in the mainly lowland area of NE Croatia. In this region Papuk is the largest and highest mountain range, with peaks between 800 and 900 m a.s.l. They are characterized by high geological diversity dominated by metamorphic rocks, such as different types of schists, as well as granites. The climate is temperate, moderately warm without an explicit dry period. About 60% of the almost totally forested area is covered by different communities of beech forests. The well-developed black patches of A. rothii cover an area ca 2 m× 0.5 m on a steep north-facing cliff on the edge of an acidothermophilic sessile oak (Quercus petraea agg.) forest. The specimens of A. rothii grew on the bare rock with the following bryophyte species: Cynodontium polycarpon (Hedw.) Schimp., Dicranella heteromalla (Hedw.) Schimp., Dicranum scoparium Hedw., Polytrichum piliferum Schreb. ex Hedw. and Rhabdoweisia (cf.) fugax (Hedw.) Bruch & Schimp. The population is very small with an extremely high risk of extinction, therefore we propose CR as Red List status for the taxon in Croatia. According to the last checklist of the moss flora of Croatia (Sabovljevic´, 2006), only Andreaea rupestris Hedw., collected from just one locality in 1927 (Horvat, 1932 and ZA), was reported for the genus. The locality is very interesting from the point of view of the vegetation of Croatia, because it is within 100 m of the second stand of Fagus sylvatica L.-Sphagnum quinquefarium (Braithw.) Warnst. forest (Alegro et al., 2015). The second occurrence of Dicranum spurium Hedw. (Ellis et al., 2014d) and Rhabdoweisia fugax (Papp et al., 2013) in Croatia are also found here. Another interesting moss is S. capillifolium (Ehrh.) Hedw., that forms small red patches within the thick carpets of S. quinquefarium under the open oulder scree forest in the neighbourhood.

Abstract

In the 2006 French housing survey, information is collected on many aspects of housing to describe the housing stock in France and the housing conditions of French households. The basic national sample results from a multistage sampling design. Complementary samples were selected to perform accurate estimations for socio-demographic domains. Some French regions proceeded to a regional and local extension of the national sample. The variance is estimated for a region with a regional and local extension of the basic national sample.

Abstract

International audience; The primary aim of this study was to differentiate immersed wood samples from dry wood samples based on chemical analysis. The method has been developed to be applied to wood found in archaeological sites to distinguish between driftwood and wood that was cut in the forest tundra and then transported to the sites. The results of our research show that Na concentrations in the immersed samples were much higher than in the dry samples for coniferous and deciduous wood samples. Principal components analysis (PCA) based on the element concentrations normalized to the total cation concentrations show that the data from the immersed wood samples and the dry wood samples clustered into two separate groups.

Abstract

International audience; New field and petrographic data from the Birimian of the Kolia-Boboti Basin in the Kédougou-Kéniéba inlier indicate two phases of gold mineralization related to Eburnean tectono-magmatic events. Syn- to late-tectonic (D2/D3) mineralization, controlled by stockwork sulphide-bearing quartz-chlorite and quartz-carbonate veins, is associated with fluid circulation related to magmatic intrusions. V2 veins and disseminated assemblages are mainly composed of quartz + chlorite + pyrite and ± gold. Haematite and arsenopyrite are added in the sediments (pelite, greywake, sandstone, quartzite, and marble) and albite in the felsic rocks (andesite, rhyolite, granodirite, and diorite). V3 veins assemblage is composed of quartz + carbonate + pyrite + chalcopyrite and ± gold. Pyrrhotite appears in the sediments (greywacke, quartzite, marble). Sericite, tourmaline, haematite, and magnetite are common in both V2 and V3 assemblages. The first sulphide-bearing quartz-chlorite assemblage is related to the hydrothermal activity of the Eburnean D2 deformation, which was focused mostly along NW- to NNE-trending tectonic structures. The second sulphide-bearing quartz-carbonate assemblage is associated with hydrothermal activity during late Eburnean D3 deformation, mainly located in NE- to E–W-trending tectonic structures. Gold is correlated with the abundance of sulphides (pyrite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite), and sulphide stockworks are more abundant in the veins sub-parallel (V2b) or oblique (V2c) to the N–S- to NNE-oriented S2 foliation, as well as in the N45°–N90°-oriented V3 veins. V1 veins, which are related to D1 Eburnean tectonics, are highly deformed (folded and boudinaged) and are poor in sulphides. The host structures of mineralization (V2 and V3 veins) represent the low- and medium-stress domains resulting from the Eburnean D2 and D3 tectonic phases, respectively. The intra-crystalline deformation of the quartz grains associated with these three vein types indicates relatively low temperatures. These different features suggest that most of the mineralization was associated with sulphides formed during the D2 and D3 Eburnean tectono-magmatic events dated around 2080 ± 0.9 and 2061 ± 15 Ma, respectively.

Abstract

The decline of bees is a major concern due to their vital role inpollinating many crops and wild plants. Some regions in SouthAmerica, and especially the Pampas, are amongst those parts ofthe world where stressors of bee populations have been littlestudied. The Pampas has been intensively transformed for agriculture,being presently one of the most productive areas of agriculturalcommodities in the world. Here, we aim to provide firstinsights on the taxonomic and functional composition of beeassemblages in the Rolling Pampa, the most intensively managedpart of the Pampas. Soybean (herbicide-tolerant genetically modifiedvarieties) is the predominant crop in this region. Bees weresampled with coloured pan traps. Sampling points were locatedon field margins in either the cropped or the semi-natural grasslandarea of a farmland site devoted to annual cropping. A total of2384 individuals were caught, representing 33 taxa [mainly (morpho)species]. The subgenus Lasioglossum (Dialictus) largely dominatedcaptures (78% of the total abundance) and was relativelyabundant in the entire study area, suggesting that some speciesare likely to reach their ecological requirements in cropped areas.No-till fields and field margins may provide large areas for thesebelow-ground nesting species, while their polylectic food preferencesallow them to collect pollen on a wide range of plantspecies, among them possibly soybean. On the contrary, the richnessand the abundance of other taxa were higher in the seminaturalarea than in the cropped area. Among them, abovegroundnesting or oil-collecting species, which have more specialisednesting and floral requirements, were highly associated withthe semi-natural area. Our findings highlight the large dominanceof L. (Dialictus) species in this highly intensively managed landscape,and the urgent need of preserving semi-natural habitats tomaintain species-rich and functionally diverse bee communities inthe Pampas. Abstract

International audience; Spirulina species are photosynthetic and filamentous bacteria, commonly called 'blue-green microalgae'. Spirulina has a high nutrient content. It contains 60-70% protein with all essential amino acids present, and is rich in several vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds. Spirulina is also rich in essential fatty acids, and antioxidants. This rich nutritional content provides to Spirulina several health benefits including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulation, and insulin-sensitizing properties as well as positive effects in various diseases which could be also interesting for athletes. This paper mainly aims to review the interest and effects of Spirulina supplementation in athletes at rest, and in relation to exercise/training. Spirulina's biochemical composition, health properties/effects in humans, and effects in athletes including nutritional status, body composition, physical performance and intense exercise-related disorders were discussed in this review. Literature data showed that Spirulina seems to have positive effects on body composition especially in overweight and obese subjects which could not be the case in other pathologies and athletes. Spirulina appears to be also effective in improving aerobic fitness especially in untrained and moderately trained subjects. Results reported in the literature suggest that Spirulina may improve strength and power performance despite the minor or no significant effects in highly trained subjects. Most studies have shown that Spirulina improves antioxidant status, prevents and accelerates the recovery of exercise-induced lipid peroxidation, muscle damage and inflammation in trained and untrained subjects. Taken together, the results from these studies are encouraging and may demonstrate the potential benefits of Spirulina supplementation in athletes despite methodological differences.

Abstract

International audience; Spatial proximity is credited with numerous virtues in the economic literature. In particular, for a company to be located near other companies is seen as conducive to the development of business relations. Spatial proximity is also considered to contribute to the quality and efficiency of these relations by facilitating face-to-face meetings that foster the exchange of complex knowledge and, in particular, the emergence of innovation. This article explores the notion of spatial proximity in intercompany relations, its capacity to facilitate exchange, as well as the link with the methods of communication employed (information and communication technologies and face-to-face). It is based on a distinction between real proximity (the spatial distance between firms), perceived proximity (the spatial distance as evaluated by the firm itself) and active proximity (spatial proximity that facilitates the exchanges). The data come from a survey conducted in 2008 with more than 2000 firms located in the Brittany region (France). The findings emphasize the relative nature of the notion of spatial proximity and the distinction in some cases between real and active proximities, and show that the positive perception of the role of spatial proximity is sustained by the increased face-to-face contact it entails

Abstract

The modelization of mass transfer through biconnected fractured porous media is studied by homogenizing the coupling between the Darcyan percolation and the viscous Stokes flow on their interface governed by the Beavers-Joseph law. The case of high transmission coefficients is considered. The asymptotic behaviour is completely described with the help of the solutions of some specific local problems and of a non homogeneous Neumann problem defined by the effective permeability tensor.

International audience; In his triangular model, Moscovici (1970, 1984) maintained that subjects do not have direct relations with the Object; rather, they have repertoires consisting of others’ responses, and these responses mediate the subject's relation with the Object. The present study examines response repertoires. We asked 114 participants to cite significant others and describe these others’ opinions about electromagnetic radiation, to indicate their own response on this issue, and to situate this response vis-à-vis the responses of the significant others described. Abstract

Wrestling is a worldwide activity, defined by some universal logics and taking various forms. There are many geographically or culturally based wrestling styles that are generally considered traditional. Wrestling itself is the signifier of different dimensions, being altogether a challenge, a cultural element and a liminal interaction between the imaginary and the body. It is an example of body culture considered as a collective symbolic wealth, diffused by the reputation of some techniques and the association with some cultural or social groups. The notion of tradition is associated with the sports and rooted in a customary and cross-generational mode of transmission. This paper examines the cases of kurash (Uzbekistan), gouren (Brittany, France) and kokh (Armenia), three wrestling styles that recently experienced or are still experiencing an institutionalisation process. Abstract

International audience; In this article, we state the Bohr-Sommerfeld conditions around a global minimum of the principal symbol of a self-adjoint semiclassical Toeplitz operator on a compact connected Kähler surface, using an argument of normal form which is obtained thanks to Fourier integral operators. These conditions give an asymptotic expansion of the eigenvalues of the operator in a neighbourhood of fixed size of the singularity. We also recover the usual Bohr-Sommerfeld conditions away from the critical point. We end by investigating an example on the two-dimensional torus.

Abstract

International audience; This examination of recent landscape architecture interventions along two rivers in southern France—the River Lez in Montpellier and the River Têt in Perpignan—questions the popular notion of ‘intervening in space’. Observing the features of the interventions and their consequences, the author investigates whether a change of paradigm occurs with regard to the approach employed. The results of this analysis demonstrate an evolution in the role of the landscape professional, who now seeks to translate or interpret a space rather than to act upon it materially. Pertinent tasks comprise not only installation in the sense of designing or bringing order to space, but also producing communications about the site. The landscape architect aims, at at a local scale, to persuade the community to accept the existing space (notably using a discourse on the values of natural and cultural heritage); and at a territorial scale, to use the riverbanks, and more generally the idea of the river, to restructure or give coherence to the city. Finally, this river intervention approach produces either conceptual pieces (such as reports, maps, films, animation) or minimal changes for ambitious infrastructural projects.

Abstract

International audience; It is shown that the concept of concentration is of potential interest in the sensitivity study of some parameters and related estimators. Basic ideas are introduced for a real parameter >0 together with graphical representations using Lorenz curves of concentration. Examples based on the mean, standard deviation and variance are provided for some classical distributions. This concentration approach is also discussed in relation with influence functions. Special emphasis is given to the average concentration of an estimator which provides a sensitivity measure allowing one to compare several estimators of the same parameter. Properties of this measure are investigated through simulation studies and its practical interest is illustrated by examples based on the trimmed mean and the Winsorized variance.

International audience; The present article analyses the process of the creation of a second Centre Pompidououtside Paris, based on the hypothesis that the success of the project depends on its socialembeddedness. It is argued that a strong indicator of this embeddedness is the emergence of anew strategic action field—crystallizing the meeting and linking of different actors with divergentinterests, but shared understandings about the common stakes. The process starts from acoincidence of cultural, political and economic motives that have their origins in related fields.These different interests are promoted by a few key protagonists who negotiate a preliminary, butstill fragile social order, mixing idealistic ideas and values with political and economic issues.The analysis reveals that social institutions of French culture exert a strong influence, whileinternal governance units in Paris retain significant powers of control. Although new networkconnections seem to form smoothly around the Centre Pompidou-Metz globally in the region, inboth the cultural and the economic domain they have developed quite unevenly.

Abstract

International audience; UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND/STUDY CONTEXT: According to both the associative deficit hypothesis (ADH; Naveh-Benjamin, 2000 , Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 26, 1170-1187) and the environmental support hypothesis (ESH; Craik, 1983 , Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London Series B, 302, 354-359), memory decline with aging can be seen as an impairment of the self-initiated associative memory processes such that supportive encoding and/or retrieval can reduce age-related differences. A formalization of relationships between the ADH and ESH was investigated using the distributed memory model "CHARM" (Composite Holographic Associative Recall-Recognition Model; Metcalfe, 1982 , Psychological Review, 89, 627-661; Metcalfe, 1991 , Psychological Review, 98, 529-543). METHODS: Empirical data were collected in young and elderly participants on cued recall and recognition tests according to both the level of processing (LOP: phonetic vs. semantic tasks) and the self-generated cueing (elaboration effect: provided vs. self-generated cue) manipulation. These data were compared with those from CHARM simulations that were designed to evaluate the impact of deteriorated associative processes (i.e., ADH) and the role of LOP and elaboration effects (i.e., ESH) in memory performance. RESULTS: The simulated data were largely consistent with the empirical data, showing that the impairment of associative processes in the CHARM model was accompanied by an increased need for environmental support at encoding (interaction between age, LOP, and elaboration) to reduce memory decline in cued recall tasks, which is somewhat observed in the recognition scores. CONCLUSION: The overall results from CHARM simulations are in accordance with both the ADH and ESH hypotheses and provide discussion on the formal connections between these two main aging explanations.

Abstract

International audience; Field studies in the Palaeoproterozoïc Daléma basin, Kédougou-Kéniéba Inlier, reveal that the main tectonic feature comprises alternating large shear zones relatively well-separated by weakly deformed surrounding rock domains. Analysis of the various structures in relation to this major D2 phase of Eburnean deformation indicates partitioning of sinistral transpressive deformation between domains of dominant transcurrent and dominant compressive deformation. Foliation is mostly oblique to subvertical and trending 0-30◦ N, but locally is subhorizontal in some thrust-motion shear zones. Foliation planes of shear zones contain a superimposed subhorizontal stretching lineation which in places cross-cuts a steeply plunging stretching lineation which is clearly expressed in the metasedimentary rocks of weakly deformed surrounding domains. In the weakly deformed domains, the subhorizontal lineation is absent, whereas the oblique to subvertical lineation is more fully developed. Finite strain analyses of samples from surrounding both weakly deformed and shearing domains, using finite strain ratio and the Fry method, indicate flattened ellipsoid fabrics. However, the orientation of the long axis (X) of the finite strain ellipsoid is horizontal in the shear zones and oblique within the weakly deformed domains. Exceptionally, samples from some thrust zones indicate a finite strain ellipsoid in triaxial constriction fabrics with a subhorizontal long axis (X). In addition, the analysis of the strain orientation starting from semi-ductile and brittle structures indicates that a WNE-ESE (130◦ N to 110◦ N) orientation of strain shortening axis occurred during the Eburnean D2 deformation.

Abstract

International audience; This study aims to observe post-Little Ice Age glacier retreat and the constitutive patterned ground development at two French Pyrenean glacier forelands (Taillon Glacier and Pays Baché Glacier). Periglacial feature observations are associated with periods of deglaciation using aerial photos and archive files. Four conclusions are drawn. (1) The two glaciers have lost respectively 68% and 92% of their surface since 1850, which corroborates observations on other Pyrenean glaciers. (2) Patterned ground can develop very rapidly, sometimes only 10 years after deglaciation. (3) Patterned ground size does not systematically increase as a function of the time elapsed since deglaciation. (4) All the forms, even those developing near the Little Ice Age moraines, are active. We propose that the location, activity and size of patterned ground are more probably linked to drift characteristics and local wetness conditions than to the time elapsed since deglaciation.

Abstract

Present climatic change and anthropogenic pressure increasingly affect the coastal zone. The Channel and Atlantic seaboards of France are no exception, with hundreds of archaeological sites currently threatened by the accelerated relative rise in sea level, erosion, and various anthropogenic modifications to the environment. In this article we propose a multidisciplinary approach to assess the vulnerability of archaeological heritage in the West of France. We also aim to establish an original methodology (and specific tools) for the observation of risks and the definition of impacts they may have on heritage sites. Abstract

Ageing causes a progressive decline in skeletal muscle mass that may lead to decreased strength and functionality. The term sarcopenia is especially used to characterise this geriatric syndrome. Numerous conditions and behaviours are considered to accelerate the progression of sarcopenia such as chronic diseases, malnutrition and physical inactivity. As people in modern countries are more and more sedentary, the impact of physical inactivity on the prevalence of sarcopenia might be more and more important in the future. In this review, we discuss how reactive oxygen species (ROS) could mediate the effects of lifelong inactivity in the onset and progression of age-related sarcopenia. Although the cellular mechanisms responsible for muscle ROS production are not necessarily the same, both inactivity and ageing are indeed known to increase basal ROS concentrations in skeletal muscle. New data and literature review are provided showing that chronic ROS overproduction induced by physical inactivity may exacerbate the activation of some redox-sensitive signalling pathways involved in age-related sarcopenia. We also address the scientific evidences implicating the role of ROS overproduction in the precocious failure of aged muscles to activate intracellular signalling responses to contractions.

Abstract

International audience; A new proof of existence of weak solutions to stochastic differential equations with continuous coefficients based on ideas from infinite-dimensional stochastic analysis is presented. The proof is fairly elementary, in particular, neither theorems on representation of martingales by stochastic integrals nor results on almost sure representation for tight sequences of random variables are needed.

Crop mapping is important in understanding the way this intensification is occurring and the impact it is having. Two successive classifications based on MODIS (MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer)-TERRA/EVI (Enhanced Vegetation Index) time series are applied (1) to map agricultural areas and (2) to identify five crop classes. These classes represent agricultural practices involving three commercial crops (soybean, maize and cotton) planted in single or double cropping systems. Both classifications are based on five steps: (1) analysis of theMODIS/EVI time series, (2) application of a smoothing algorithm, (3) application of a feature selection/extraction process to reduce the data set dimensionality, (4) application of a classifier and (5) application of a post-classification treatment. The first classification detected 95% of the agricultural areas (5 617 250 ha during the 2006-2007 harvest) and correlation coefficients with agricultural statistics exceeded 0.98 for the three crop classes at municipality level. The second classification (overall accuracy = 74% and kappa index = 0.675) allowed us to obtain the spatial variability mapping of agricultural practices in the state of Mato Grosso. A total of 30% of the total planted area was cultivated through double cropping systems, especially along the BR163 highway and in the Parecis plateau region.

Abstract

PurposeImpairment of postural control is a common extra-respiratory manifestation in people with COPD. However, the precise characteristics of this alteration are not clearly known. The “Systems Framework for Postural Control” which define postural control sub-components, is a relevant tool to explore this field. The main aim of this review was to identify which postural control sub-components are impaired in patients with COPD and to summarize characteristics for each sub-component. A secondary aim was to precise the relation between postural control and activities of daily living.Materials and methodsA scoping review was conducted, according to the JBI methodology. Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Scielo, Google Scholar, Open Grey and HAL were searched from inception to March 2021. The search was performed in English and French.ResultsSeventy-seven articles were included. There was evidence of a potential impairment for most of the postural control sub-components. Characteristics of every sub-component alteration were heterogeneous. Even if the relation was poorly studied, reduced postural control seemed to be associate with difficulties in activities of daily living.ConclusionPatients with COPD could experiment impairment among a wide range of postural control sub-components. Future research must clarify if a common pattern of modification exits for this alteration.Implications for rehabilitationImpairment of postural control is a common extra-respiratory manifestation in patients with COPD and so clinicians must include it in their clinical reasoningNumerous postural control sub-components could be altered in patients with COPD, suggesting that postural control assessment must be holistic.This scoping review shows that characteristics of postural control impairment are varied and that there may be no common pattern at the COPD population level.
