Rhododendron delavayi is a natural shrub with importance in preventing rocky desertification in the karst regions of Bijie city of China. The structure of fungal communities in bulk soil, rhizosphere and roots of R. delavayi at three elevations was analyzed by ITS2 amplicon sequencing. The results showed that the soil pH was highest at 1448 m, while the content of available phosphorus, total nitrogen and total phosphorus was lowest at 1821 m. The Shannon of fungal communities in bulk soil was higher than roots at 1448 m. Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the most dominant phyla present in bulk soil, rhizosphere and root endophyte. The pH was positively related to Chytridiomycota and Glomeromycota in bulk soil at 1643 m. Ammonium-nitrogen significantly influenced the fungal communities in bulk soil, while the elevations impacted the diversity of fungal communities by affecting available phosphorus content in bulk soil and roots. In summary, elevation significantly affected the diversity and structure of fungal communities by affecting soil pH and nutrient levels, and the fungal communities helped R. delavayi in adaptating to different elevations.

Heat transfer characteristics of confined submerged jet impingement boiling of air-dissolved FC-72 on heated micro-pin-finned surfaces are presented. The dimension of the silicon chips is 10 × 10 × 0.5 mm3 (length × width × thickness) on micro-pin-fins with the four dimensions of 30 × 30 × 60 μm3, 50 × 50 × 60 μm3, 30 × 30 × 120 μm3, and 50 × 50 × 120 μm3 fabricated by using the dry etching technique. For comparison, experiments of jet impinging on a smooth surface were also conducted. The results have shown that submerged jet impingement boiling gives a large heat transfer enhancement compared with pool boiling, and all micro-pin-fins showed better heat transfer performance than a smooth surface. This article examines the development of China's automotive industry. The evidence shows that integration in global production networks has stimulated upgrading of technological capabilities among automotive firms. However, the competitiveness and intra-industry analyses show mixed results. Although intra-industry trade in automotive products has improved since 2000, the trade competitiveness of completely built-up vehicles has largely remained in low value-added activities. Nevertheless, firm-level evidence shows that the industry has undergone considerable upgrading, albeit in low value-added activities. Trade integration and host-country institutional support have been the prime driving forces of technological upgrading in the automotive industry in China.

This article examines the transformation of clothing manufacturing in China with a focus on institutional support, technological upgrading and global production chains. Evidence shows that reforms and integration into global production chains have rapidly expanded China's exports but these have also driven the relocation abroad of Chinese clothing firms. Global integration has motivated clothing firms to upgrade through learning, adoption and innovation. Hence, despite improvements in technological capabilities the share of clothing value-added in manufacturing has gradually declined. Also, China has increasingly faced industrial structural change from clothing to the capital goods, real estate and high-tech sectors.

This study traces the transformation of Qiaotou city from a button distribution centre to a composite and advanced button manufacturing cluster accounting for 65% of world button production in 2006. It argues that button sales originated in entrepreneurial initiative that expanded through market-based armslength transactions as hundreds of stalls mushroomed in Qiaotou. The transformation of Qiaotou from the late 1990s into a composite cluster including designing, new material and product development took place when the local government took advantage of the rapid manufacturing growth to stimulate collaborative links between government, the firms and universities to support the appropriation of research synergies.

Using the evolutionary framework of inductive screening, this paper seeks to examine the drivers of technological catch-up in the integrated circuits (ICs) industry in Taiwan and China. The paper shows that IC manufacturing began with multinationals relocating export-oriented assembly operations in the 1960s in Taiwan and in the 1980s in China, but serious technological catch-up took place when, with the assistance of the government, local firms began to participate in wafer fabrication and designing activities. While foreign ownership and export markets were critical in initiating connections in the global IC value chain, the paper argues that the role of the government through funding, research and development laboratories and development of human capital were critical in local firms’ technological catch-up process in both the countries.
