However, the scientific literature surrounding transcreation does not offer a homogenous definition of the term. Given these disparities, the main objective of this work is to create a reliable source of reviewed scientific information about the topic. A sample of scientific works regarding the topic ‘transcreation’ has been compiled from databases and repositories of recognized reliability and has been analyzed with a qualitative data analysis software (NVivo). Findings show that research on transcreation expanded significantly between 2015 and 2019 and that most studies are of a qualitative nature. A critical analysis of the content connects transcreation with other fields of research: translation, communication, advertising and poetry. The practical orientation of undergraduate translation and interpreting degrees in Spain means that less importance is given to theoretical modules, and it is often thought that students doubt the usefulness of these modules and are therefore reluctant to take them. Previous empirical researchhas shown that students are not as averse to theory as is often assumed; in fact, according to these studies, students rate its contribution to their training quite positively. In order to take a further step in the study of students’ views on translation theory, the present study adds a qualitative perspective to (in)validate the results obtained in previous research and explore them in greater depth. Students’ answers to open questions are analysed using Atlas.ti qualitative analysis software to assess how translation theory contributes to their training and identify the strengths and weaknesses of the translation theory module at Jaume I University (Castellón, Spain). Our findings show that fitting translation theory into the training and education of translators is a complex task and they also reveal that cognitive restructuring is needed to help students overcome their tendency to associate theory with complex, dense, difficult-to-grasp and, ultimately, useless concepts.

The present paper can be located at the interface of translation studies, imagology and philological analysis of the sources of a literary text. We analyse a travel book by the German author Kathe Burchard entitled Unter kanarischem Himmel [Under the Canary Sky] (1909), with the aim of recovering and giving visibility to a text that has been ignored by the specialised bibliography on the history of the conquest of the Canary Islands. Furthermore, we aim to investigate the relationships that can be established between Burchard’s work and oral and written sources that were not mentioned by the German author. Through a contrastive study of these sources, we show how this relationship is not merely a case of intertextuality, but a more than probable covert translation. Finally, by analysing the work of a woman, Burchard, who writes about a female figure, the Canarian indigenous Iballa, often compared to the controversial figure of Hernan Cortes’s interpreter, La Malinche, we reflect on the role of translation as a discursive practice in the creation, consolidation and dissemination of certain images, identities (of women, of oppressed groups and hegemonic cultures) and gender discourses in given cultures.

Translation is an essential and extensively-used tool in cross-cultural research and development programmes, yet is frequently sidelined as being of little importance and only a minor component of the initial project design. This often leads to assumptions regarding translation tasks, not only by the translator but also the end-user or the commissioner. Addressing this lack of awareness and the resultant misunderstandings concerning the translation outcome, this article examines the translation processes that take place when translations are commissioned, in this case for an impact study of an NGO community radio development project in Africa’s Sahel region. The article draws on empirical data from the case, including semi-structured interviews with translators working from Fulfuldé, Tamashek, and Zarma-Songhai into French with responses clustered around four themes: identity, agency, source text knowledge and transcription/translation processes. The article expands translation studies by investigating language pairs and informal practices in regions yet to receive attention in the field. It also speaks to development studies by providing practical recommendations for implementing changes to overcome dismissive and neglectful attitudes towards translation and to promote its consideration as a core element of development projects.

Translation studies have shown that management ideas and practices change as they travel between contexts, and that there are regularities in how they are translated through editing. We, however, know less about what facilitates good translations, i.e. the translation of new ideas and practices into working practices or routines that contribute to the attainment of organizational goals. This study investigates how the concept of readiness for change can increase our understanding of translation processes and translation outcomes through following an intra-organizational translation of a new management idea and practice in a hospital. The aim is to identify how the use of editing rules in a strategic translation process impacts readiness for change. It is also to identify how readiness influences the use of editing rules and translation practices in an operative translation process and the resulting differences in the quality of translation outcomes. This study finds that strategic translations may foster readiness for change. Readiness furthermore enables inclusive operative translation processes in which editing practices and translation rules are used to thoroughly rework a new management idea and practice into a good translation.
