The article presents an international update on the information technology industry as of March 2004. IGroup, a distributor of databases, e-journals, and library automation systems, has contracted CAVAL Collaborative Solutions, a consortium of Australian universities to prepare a report on the feasibility of developing a new international certificate and diploma course for Asian librarians and information professionals. The feasibility study will seek to establish which skills employers are looking for and how knowledge management techniques and new library technologies and standards can be incorporated into a new curriculum. The National Library of Malaysia has launched a new Web site to help improve knowledge of Islam and Muslim communities. The International Islamic Digital Library is a Web-based collection of digital books, manuscripts, theses, journal articles and working papers. Also, in Australia, a new search engine has been launched that claims to offer more precise and personalized searching. Meanwhile, in Taiwan, Creative Commons, a non-profit organization dedicated to building a body of creative works that are free to be copied and reused, has announced that it's information discussions to expand its International Commons project to China and Taiwan.

This article presents some highlights of the 11th Australasian World Wide Web Conference (AusWeb05) held in Australia in July 2005. AusWeb is a forum for librarians, technologists, social scientists, and entrepreneurs to discuss broad issues shaping the Web's evolution. AusWeb05 featured four tracks: Technical and Standards; Education and Training; e-Commerce/e-Business/Online Marketing; and Society, Information and the Web. Although presenters were predominantly from Australia, there was a cross-section of delegates from Asia and North America. Web evolution was the starting point for the tracks, but topics quickly moved onto a more granular analysis of Web trends, four of which emerged as central themes for the conference: high-quality content, Google Scholar, e-learning, and business models.

This article discusses the efforts of the students and faculty at the University of Maryland to teach U.S. soldiers stationed in Asia how to search online databases as of 1986. The university has a prime contract with the Department of Defense to teach their soldiers. Database searching is an important skill for the military, allowing its soldiers to use a multitude of computer tools for work and play. Soldiers have said that tools, such as electronic mail or video games, was a good form of recreation.
