In this paper, we suggest a phase difference algorithm inspired by weakly electric fish. Weakly electric fish is a fish which generates electric field though its electric organ in the tail. The weakly electric fish search for prey and detect an object by using electrolocation. The weakly electric fish have Jamming Avoidance Response (JAR) to avoid jamming signal. One of pulse-type weakly electric fish Gymnotus carapo also have JAR to reduce the probability of coincidence of pulses. We analyze this response signal and design the phase difference algorithm. We expect that simple algorithm inspired by weakly electric fish can be used in many engineering fields.

Hand gesture recognition based on vision is a challenging task in human-robot interaction. The sign language of finger spelling alphabets has been tested as a kind of hand gesture. In this paper, we test hand gesture recognition by detecting the contour shape and orientation of hand with visual image. The method has three stages, the first stage of finding hand component separated from the background image, the second stage of extracting the contour feature over the hand component and the last stage of comparing the feature with the reference features in the database. Sand scorpions are nocturnal animals to mostly use tactile senses to detect their prey. It has been reported that sand scorpions have high vibration sensitivity for their prey-localizing behavior. We tested vibration experiments in the sand with microphone sensors to model the sand scorpion’s behavior and a time-difference model was applied to find the direction of a vibration source. Using the information of the arrival time of the vibration signal to reach each leg position, we can find the location of the vibration source. It is known that big brown bats can distinguish echo of a prey at various angles. In this paper, we suggest a new object localization strategy using ultrasonic echolocation. We calculate the relative energy ratio between a high frequency component of ultrasound signal and a low frequency component of ultrasound signal for a target object. We found the measure depends on bearing angle of the object in space. We also tested energy ratio of echoed FM ultrasound signals depending on frequency, based on cross-correlation. It can determine the relative angular position of objects even though the reflected signals are congested form each object.

There have been many homing navigation algorithms for robotic system. In this paper, we suggest a bio-inspired navigation model. It builds path integration based on optical flow. We consider two factors on robot movements, translational movement and rotational movement. For each movement, we found distinguishable optical flows. Based on optical flow, we estimate ego-centric robot movement and integrate the path optimally. We can determine the homing direction and distance. We test this algorithm and evaluate the performance of homing navigation for robotic system.

Autonomous navigating algorithms for mobile robots have been proved to be a difficult task. Based on the excellent homing performance shown by many insects, bio-inspired navigation algorithms for robotic experiments have been widely researched and applied to the design of navigational strategies for mobile robots. In this paper, among them, we analyze two simple landmark navigation methods their strengths and limits. We investigate the effect of the occlusion problem mainly, which is an important yet tough problem in many landmark navigation algorithms. In the point of view of the error of homing vector and the performance of the homing paths in the environment with artificial occlusions, we investigate the effect of occlusion problem in both methods in order to further study on solutions.

In this paper, we suggest a method for discretized frequency modulations of ultrasonic signals. A continuous sweep of frequency modulation signals can be modelled with fine levels of discretization. If the ultrasound signals are modulated with monotonically decreasing frequencies, then the cross-correlation between an emitted signal and received signal can be used to identify the distance of multiple target objects. For the discretized frequency synthesis, CF ultrasounds with different frequencies are serially ordered. The auto-correlation test with the signal shows effective results for distance estimation. The discretized frequency syntheses have better distance resolution than CF ultrasound signals and the resolution depends on the number of the combined ultrasound frequencies.

It is known that many insects and animals can return to their nest after exploration, with their own specific homing mechanisms. Their homing navigation methods have been applied to the robotic navigation. In this paper, we test the sector-based image matching method motivated by the honeybee`s landmark navigation behaviour. Here, our robotic approach uses the reference compass to identify the current head direction and the relative angular position of landmarks for the navigation. The robot shows desirable homing behaviors if the robot is surrounded by landmarks. The result of robot experiment is in good agreement with that of simulation.

Researches on air-ground robot cooperating system has been made recently. The cooperation among homogeneous robots focused on the architecture of the system, quality and influence of the communication. In contrast, the cooperation among heterogeneous robots such as aerial vehicle and ground vehicle robots has not been much handled. There are a couple of main points for those air-ground cooperating robots. One is using UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) as an extra sensor of UGV (Unmanned Ground Vehicle). This kind of application is usually used in situations such as guiding UGV to an appropriate path which could be better determined from the eye in the sky as UAV. The other main application of air-ground cooperating robot system is the localization. By combining sensor information from both UAV and UGV, the robot system as a whole can localize a target object or find features in the environment with better performance than UGV or UAV alone. Although these applications are recently studied in many different ways and devices, there are still a lot of possibilities in the field of air-ground cooperating robot systems. We introduce those research fields in this paper.
