Six contracts have been placed, calling for production of 1200 tons of superconducting cables (SC) for the main dipoles and quadrupoles of CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC). And two contracts have been placed for 470 tons of NbTi and 26 tons of Nb sheets.

Abstract

Research was conducted to examine strand coating for the superconducting cables of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) main magnets. The molten bath Sn(sub 95wt)Ag(sub 5wt) coating, which were oxidized thermally in air after the cabling was completed, were adopted for the cables of the LHC main magnets. The strand coating and cabling procedures, oxidation heat treatment and the magnet coil curing and handling determined the value of the contact resistance. Results on two electrolytic coatings leading to higher contact resistance are reported.

Abstract

Soldering strand stability in Rutherford cables may be enhanced without increasing coupling by soldering strands together or by using porous metals. Resistance between strands in the crossover direction are also increased by placing a resistive core in the center of the Rutherford cable. This will decrease coupling currents even when resistance to adjacent turns are minimal.

Abstract

The direct current electrical method was employed in analyzing the electrical contacts between superconducting cable strands for the Large Hadron Collider main magnets. An examination was then conducted on the resistance measurement approach, the cable's resistive barrier properties and sample preparation. The influence of cable treatment on contact resistance was also studied.
