Self-injection control was shown to be effective in producing efficient, narrow line, two-wavelength emission in a CW Ti3+ :Al2O3 laser. The two-wavelength selector is a combination of an interference wedge and a grazing incidence grating. To avoid insertion losses and optical damage problems, the device operates outside the main nonselective laser cavity. This produced two independently tunable two narrow laser lines of total output power of 1.5 watts, which can be emitted separately or as a single beam.

Measurements of the ratio of heat produced to energy absorbed provide an alternative to other heat load characterization of solid-state laser media. This method is convenient as only temperature and pump energy are recorded. This involves only energy defect and non-radiative quenching and provides the same results as spectroscopy and through calculations indicating strong consistency between heat characterization and laser characterization.
