The article examines the role of big data in food safety and quality that is used for predictive analysis and make better buying decisions. Topics discussed include economic aspects of big data in context of healthcare cost in the U.S; sequencing of foodborne pathogen isolates by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration; and use of geographical information systems technology to predict pre-harvest food safety hazards.
